1 Or Judas entendit parler des Romains. Ils étaient, disait-on, puissants, bienveillants aussienvers tous ceux qui s'attachaient à leur cause, accordant leur amitié à quiconque s'adressait à eux.	1 Now Judas had heard of the the Romans, that they were mighty and valiant men, and such as would lovingly accept all that joined themselves unto them, and make a league of amity with all that came unto them;
2 (Leur puissance en effet était fort grande.) On lui raconta leurs guerres et les exploits qu'ilsavaient accomplis chez les Gaulois, comment ils s'étaient rendus maîtres de ce peuple et l'avaient soumis autribut,	2 And that they were men of great valour. It was told him also of their wars and noble acts which they had done among the Galatians, and how they had conquered them, and brought them under tribute;
3 tout ce qu'ils avaient fait dans le pays d'Espagne pour s'emparer des mines d'argent et d'or quis'y trouvaient,	3 And what they had done in the country of Spain, for the winning of the mines of the silver and gold which is there;
4 comment ils avaient eu raison de tout ce pays grâce à leur esprit averti et à leur persévérance(car l'endroit était fort éloigné de chez eux); il en avait été de même des rois venus pour les attaquer desextrémités de la terre, ils les avaient écrasés, leur infligeant un grand désastre, tandis que les autres leurapportaient un tribut annuel;	4 And that by their policy and patience they had conquered all the place, though it were very far from them; and the kings also that came against them from the uttermost part of the earth, till they had discomfited them, and given them a great overthrow, so that the rest did give them tribute every year:
5 enfin ils avaient abattu par les armes Philippe, Persée, roi des Kitiens, et les autres quis'étaient levés contre eux, et ils les avaient soumis.	5 Beside this, how they had discomfited in battle Philip, and Perseus, king of the Citims, with others that lifted up themselves against them, and had overcome them:
6 Antiochus le Grand, roi de l'Asie, qui s'était avancé pour les combattre avec 120 éléphants, dela cavalerie, des chars et une armée considérable, avait été entièrement défait par eux	6 How also Antiochus the great king of Asia, that came against them in battle, having an hundred and twenty elephants, with horsemen, and chariots, and a very great army, was discomfited by them;
7 et capturé vivant. A lui et à ses successeurs sur le trône étaient imposés, à termes fixés, lepaiement d'un lourd tribut et la livraison d'otages.	7 And how they took him alive, and covenanted that he and such as reigned after him should pay a great tribute, and give hostages, and that which was agreed upon,
8 On lui enlevait le pays indien, la Médie, la Lydie et quelques-unes de ses plus bellesprovinces au profit du roi Eumène.	8 And the country of India, and Media and Lydia and of the goodliest countries, which they took of him, and gave to king Eumenes:
9 Ceux de la Grèce ayant formé le dessein d'aller les exterminer,	9 Moreover how the Grecians had determined to come and destroy them;
10 les Romains, l'ayant su, avaient envoyé contre eux un seul général; ils leur firent une guerreoù tombèrent un grand nombre de victimes, ils emmenèrent en captivité femmes et enfants, ils pillèrent leursbiens, assujettirent leurs pays, détruisirent leurs forteresses et réduisirent leurs personnes en servitude commeelles le sont encore aujourd'hui.	10 And that they, having knowledge thereof sent against them a certain captain, and fighting with them slew many of them, and carried away captives their wives and their children, and spoiled them, and took possession of their lands, and pulled down their strong holds, and brought them to be their servants unto this day:
11 Quant aux autres royaumes et aux îles qui leur avaient résisté, les Romains les avaientdétruits et asservis.	11 It was told him besides, how they destroyed and brought under their dominion all other kingdoms and isles that at any time resisted them;
12 Mais à leurs amis et à ceux qui se reposent sur eux, ils ont gardé leur amitié. Ils ont assujettiles rois voisins et les rois éloignés, tous ceux qui entendent leur nom les redoutent.	12 But with their friends and such as relied upon them they kept amity: and that they had conquered kingdoms both far and nigh, insomuch as all that heard of their name were afraid of them:
13 Tous ceux à qui ils veulent prêter secours et conférer la royauté, règnent; ils déposent aucontraire qui il leur plaît: ils ont atteint une puissance considérable.	13 Also that, whom they would help to a kingdom, those reign; and whom again they would, they displace: finally, that they were greatly exalted:
14 Malgré tout cela aucun d'entre eux n'a ceint le diadème ni revêtu la pourpre pour en tirergloire.	14 Yet for all this none of them wore a crown or was clothed in purple, to be magnified thereby:
15 Ils se sont créé un conseil où chaque jour délibèrent 320 membres continuellement occupésdu peuple pour le maintenir en bon ordre.	15 Moreover how they had made for themselves a senate house, wherein three hundred and twenty men sat in council daily, consulting alway for the people, to the end they might be well ordered:
16 Ils confient chaque année à un seul homme le pouvoir et la domination sur tout leur empire:tous obéissent à ce seul homme sans qu'il y ait d'envie ou de jalousie parmi eux.	16 And that they committed their government to one man every year, who ruled over all their country, and that all were obedient to that one, and that there was neither envy nor emmulation among them.
17 Ayant choisi Eupolème, fils de Jean, de la maison d'Akkôs, et Jason, fils d'Eléazar, Judas lesenvoya à Rome conclure avec les Romains amitié et alliance,	17 In consideration of these things, Judas chose Eupolemus the son of John, the son of Accos, and Jason the son of Eleazar, and sent them to Rome, to make a league of amity and confederacy with them,
18 et obtenir d'être délivrés du joug, car ils voyaient que la royauté des Grecs réduisait Israël enservitude.	18 And to intreat them that they would take the yoke from them; for they saw that the kingdom of the Grecians did oppress Israel with servitude.
19 Ils arrivèrent à Rome au bout d'un très long voyage et, entrés au Sénat, ils prirent la paroleen ces termes:	19 They went therefore to Rome, which was a very great journey, and came into the senate, where they spake and said.
20 "Judas, dit Maccabée, et ses frères avec le peuple juif nous ont envoyés vers vous pourconclure avec vous un traité d'alliance et de paix et pour être inscrits au nombre de vos alliés et de vos amis."	20 Judas Maccabeus with his brethren, and the people of the Jews, have sent us unto you, to make a confederacy and peace with you, and that we might be registered your confederates and friends.
21 La requête plut aux sénateurs.	21 So that matter pleased the Romans well.
22 Voici la copie de la lettre qu'ils gravèrent sur des tables de bronze et envoyèrent à Jérusalempour y être chez les Juifs un document de paix et d'alliance:	22 And this is the copy of the epistle which the senate wrote back again in tables of brass, and sent to Jerusalem, that there they might have by them a memorial of peace and confederacy:
23 "Prospérité aux Romains et à la nation des Juifs sur mer et sur terre à jamais! Loin d'eux leglaive et l'ennemi!	23 Good success be to the Romans, and to the people of the Jews, by sea and by land for ever: the sword also and enemy be far from them,
24 S'il arrive une guerre, à Rome d'abord, ou à quelqu'un de ses alliés sur toute l'étendue de sadomination,	24 If there come first any war upon the Romans or any of their confederates throughout all their dominion,
25 la nation des Juifs combattra avec elle, suivant ce que lui dicteront les circonstances, de toutcoeur;	25 The people of the Jews shall help them, as the time shall be appointed, with all their heart:
26 ils ne donneront aux adversaires et ne leur fourniront ni blé, ni armes, ni argent, nivaisseaux: ainsi en a décidé Rome, et ils garderont leurs engagements sans recevoir de garantie.	26 Neither shall they give any thing unto them that make war upon them, or aid them with victuals, weapons, money, or ships, as it hath seemed good unto the Romans; but they shall keep their covenants without taking any thing therefore.
27 De même, s'il arrive d'abord une guerre à la nation des Juifs, les Romains combattront avecelle de toute leur âme, suivant ce que leur dicteront les circonstances.	27 In the same manner also, if war come first upon the nation of the Jews, the Romans shall help them with all their heart, according as the time shall be appointed them:
28 Il ne sera donné aux assaillants ni blé, ni armes, ni argent, ni vaisseaux: ainsi en a décidéRome, et ils garderont leurs engagements sans dol.	28 Neither shall victuals be given to them that take part against them, or weapons, or money, or ships, as it hath seemed good to the Romans; but they shall keep their covenants, and that without deceit.
29 C'est en ces termes que les Romains ont conclu leur convention avec le peuple des Juifs.	29 According to these articles did the Romans make a covenant with the people of the Jews.
30 Que si, dans la suite, les uns et les autres décident d'y ajouter ou en retrancher quelquechose, ils le feront à leur gré et ce qu'ils auront ajouté ou retranché sera obligatoire.	30 Howbeit if hereafter the one party or the other shall think to meet to add or diminish any thing, they may do it at their pleasures, and whatsoever they shall add or take away shall be ratified.
31 Au sujet des maux que le roi Démétrius leur a causés, nous lui avons écrit en ces termes:Pourquoi fais-tu peser ton joug sur les Juifs, nos amis alliés?	31 And as touching the evils that Demetrius doeth to the Jews, we have written unto him, saying, Wherefore thou made thy yoke heavy upon our friends and confederates the Jews?
32 Si donc ils t'accusent encore, nous soutiendrons leurs droits et nous te combattrons sur meret sur terre."	32 If therefore they complain any more against thee, we will do them justice, and fight with thee by sea and by land.
