JERUSALEM	NEW AMERICAN BIBLE
1 Satan se dressa contre Israël et il incita David à dénombrer les Israélites.	1 A satan rose up against Israel, and he enticed David into taking a census of Israel.
2 David dit à Joab et aux chefs du peuple: "Allez compter Israël, de Bersabée à Dan, puisrevenez m'en faire connaître le chiffre."	2 David therefore said to Joab and to the other generals of the army, "Go, find out the number of the Israelites from Beer-sheba to Dan, and report back to me that I may know their number."
3 Joab répondit: "Que Yahvé accroisse son peuple de cent fois autant! Monseigneur le roi, nesont-ils pas tous les serviteurs de Monseigneur? Pourquoi Monseigneur fait-il cette enquête? Pourquoi Israëldeviendrait-il coupable?"	3 But Joab replied: "May the LORD increase his people a hundredfold! My lord king, are not all of them my lord's subjects? Why does my lord seek to do this thing? Why will he bring guilt upon Israel?"
4 Cependant l'ordre du roi s'imposa à Joab. Joab partit, il parcourut tout Israël, puis rentra àJérusalem.	4 However, the king's command prevailed over Joab, who departed and traversed all of Israel, and then returned to Jerusalem.
5 Joab fournit à David le chiffre obtenu pour le recensement du peuple; tout Israël comptait1.100.000 hommes tirant l'épée, et Juda 470.000 hommes tirant l'épée.	5 Joab reported the result of the census to David: of men capable of wielding a sword, there were in all Israel one million one hundred thousand, and in Judah four hundred and seventy thousand.
6 L'ordre du roi avait tant répugné à Joab qu'il n'avait recensé ni Lévi ni Benjamin.	6 Levi and Benjamin, however, he did not include in the census, for the king's command was repugnant to Joab.
7 Dieu vit avec déplaisir cette affaire et il frappa Israël.	7 This command displeased God, who began to punish Israel.
8 David dit alors à Dieu: "C'est un grand péché que j'ai commis en cette affaire! Maintenant,veuille pardonner cette faute à ton serviteur, car j'ai commis une grande folie."	8 Then David said to God, "I have sinned greatly in doing this thing. Take away your servant's guilt, for I have acted very foolishly."
9 Yahvé dit alors à Gad, le voyant de David:	9 Then the LORD spoke to Gad, David's seer, in these words:
10 "Va dire à David: Ainsi parle Yahvé. Je te propose trois choses: choisis-en une et jel'exécuterai pour toi."	10 "Go, tell David: Thus says the LORD: I offer you three alternatives; choose one of them, and I will inflict it on you."
11 Donc Gad se rendit chez David et lui dit: "Ainsi parle Yahvé. Il te faut accepter	11 Accordingly, Gad went to David and said to him; "Thus says the LORD: Decide now--
12 soit trois années de famine, soit un désastre de trois mois devant tes ennemis, l'épée de tesadversaires dans les reins, soit l'épée de Yahvé et trois jours de peste dans le pays, l'ange de Yahvé ravageanttout le territoire d'Israël! Vois maintenant ce que je dois répondre à celui qui m'envoie."	12 will it be three years of famine; or three months of fleeing your enemies, with the sword of your foes ever at your back; or three days of the LORD'S own sword, a pestilence in the land, with the LORD'S destroying angel in every part of Israel? Therefore choose: What answer am I to give him who sent me?"
13 David répondit à Gad: "Je suis dans une grande anxiété... Ah! que je tombe entre les mainsde Yahvé, car sa miséricorde est immense, mais que je ne tombe pas entre les mains des hommes!"	13 Then David said to Gad: "I am in dire straits. But I prefer to fall into the hand of the LORD, whose mercy is very great, than into the hands of men."
14 Yahvé envoya donc la peste en Israël et, parmi les Israélites, 70.000 hommes tombèrent.	14 Therefore the LORD sent pestilence upon Israel, and seventy thousand men of Israel died.
15 Puis Dieu envoya l'ange vers Jérusalem pour l'exterminer; mais au moment de l'exterminer,Yahvé regarda et se repentit de ce mal; et il dit à l'ange exterminateur: "Assez! Retire ta main." L'ange de Yahvése tenait alors près de l'aire d'Ornân le Jébuséen.	15 God also sent an angel to destroy Jerusalem; but as he was on the point of destroying it, the LORD saw and decided against the calamity, and said to the destroying angel, "Enough now! Stay your hand!"The angel of the LORD was then standing by the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.
16 Levant les yeux, David vit l'ange de Yahvé qui se tenait entre terre et ciel, l'épée dégainée àla main, tendue vers Jérusalem. Revêtus de sacs, David et les anciens tombèrent alors face contre terre,	16 When David raised his eyes, he saw the angel of the LORD standing between earth and heaven, with a naked sword in his hand stretched out against Jerusalem. David and the elders, clothed in sackcloth, prostrated themselves face to the ground,
17 et David dit à Dieu: "N'est-ce pas moi qui ai ordonné de recenser le peuple? N'est-ce pasmoi qui ai péché et qui ai commis le mal? Mais ceux-là, c'est le troupeau, qu'ont-ils fait? Yahvé, mon Dieu, queta main s'appesantisse donc sur moi et sur ma famille, mais que ton peuple échappe au fléau!"	17 and David prayed to God: "Was it not I who ordered the census of the people? I am the one who sinned, I did this wicked thing. But these sheep, what have they done? O LORD, my God, strike me and my father's family, but do not afflict your people with this plague!"
18 L'ange de Yahvé dit alors à Gad: "Que David monte et élève un autel à Yahvé sur l'aired'Ornân le Jébuséen."	18 Then the angel of the LORD commanded Gad to tell David to go up and erect an altar to the LORD on the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.
19 David monta donc selon la parole que Gad lui avait dite au nom de Yahvé.	19 David went up at Gad's command, given in the name of the LORD.
20 Or, en se retournant, Ornân avait vu l'ange et il se cachait avec ses quatre fils. Ornân était entrain de battre le froment	20 While Ornan was threshing wheat, he turned around and saw the king, and his four sons who were with him, without recognizing them.
21 lorsque David se rendit auprès de lui. Ornân regarda, vit David, sortit de l'aire, et seprosterna devant David, la face contre terre.	21 But as David came on toward him, he looked up and saw that it was David. Then he left the threshing floor and bowed down before David, his face to the ground.
22 David dit alors à Ornân: "Cède-moi l'emplacement de cette aire afin que j'y construise unautel pour Yahvé. Cède-le-moi pour sa pleine valeur en argent. Ainsi le fléau s'écartera du peuple."	22 David said to Ornan: "Sell me the ground of this threshing floor, that I may build on it an altar to the LORD. Sell it to me at its full price, that the plague may be stayed from the people."
23 Ornân dit alors à David: "Prends, et que Monseigneur le roi fasse ce qui lui semble bon!Vois: je donne les boeufs pour les holocaustes, le traîneau pour le bois et le grain pour l'oblation. Je donne letout."	23 But Ornan said to David: "Take it as your own, and let my lord the king do what seems best to him. See, I also give you the oxen for the holocausts, the threshing sledges for the wood, and the wheat for the cereal offering. I give it all to you."
24 Le roi David répondit à Ornân: "Non pas! je veux l'acheter pour sa pleine valeur en argent;car je ne veux pas prendre pour Yahvé ce qui t'appartient et offrir ainsi des holocaustes qui ne me coûtent rien."	24 But King David replied to Ornan: "No! I will buy it from you properly, at its full price. I will not take what is yours for the LORD, nor offer up holocausts that cost me nothing."
25 David donna à Ornân pour ce lieu le poids de 600 sicles d'or.	25 So David paid Ornan six hundred shekels of gold for the place.
26 David construisit là un autel pour Yahvé, et il offrit des holocaustes et des sacrifices decommunion. Il invoqua Yahvé; Yahvé lui répondit en faisant tomber du ciel le feu sur l'autel des holocaustes	26 David then built an altar there to the LORD, and offered up holocausts and peace offerings. When he called upon the LORD, he answered him by sending down fire from heaven upon the altar of holocausts.
27 et il ordonna à l'ange de remettre l'épée au fourreau.	27 Then the LORD gave orders to the angel to return his sword to its sheath.
28 A cette époque, voyant que Yahvé lui avait répondu sur l'aire d'Ornân le Jébuséen, David yfit un sacrifice.	28 Once David saw that the LORD had heard him on the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite, he continued to offer sacrifices there.
29 La Demeure que Moïse avait faite dans le désert et l'autel des holocaustes se trouvaient àcette époque sur le haut lieu de Gabaôn,	29 The Dwelling of the LORD, which Moses had built in the desert, and the altar of holocausts were at that time on the high place at Gibeon.
30 mais David n'avait pu y aller devant Dieu pour s'adresser à lui, tant l'épée de l'ange deYahvé lui avait fait peur.	30 But David could not go there to worship God, for he was fearful of the sword of the angel of the LORD.
