DOUAI-RHEIMSEL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
And it came to pass when Samuel was old, that he appointed his sons to be judges over Israel.1 Cuando Samuel envejeció, puso a sus hijos como jueces de Israel.
Now the name of his firstborn son was Joel: and the name of the second was Abia, judges in Bersabee.2 Su hijo mayor se llamaba Joel, y el segundo, Abías: ambos eran jueces en Berseba.
And his sons walked not in his ways: but they turned aside after lucre, and took bribes, and perverted judgment.3 Pero ellos no siguieron sus pasos, sino que se dejaron llevar por el afán de lucro, aceptaron regalos y pervirtieron el derecho.
Then all the ancients of Israel being assembled, came to Samuel to Ramatha.4 Entonces se reunieron todos los ancianos de Israel y acudieron a Samuel en Ramá.
And they said to him: Behold thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: make us a king, to judge us, as all nations have.5 «Tú ya eres viejo, le dijeron, y tus hijos no siguen tus pasos. Ahora danos un rey para que nos gobierne, como lo tienen todas las naciones».
And the word was displeasing in the eyes of Samuel, that they should say: Give us a king, to judge us. And Samuel prayed to the Lord.6 A Samuel le disgustó que le dijeran: «Danos un rey para que nos gobierne», y oró al Señor.
And the Lord said to Samuel: Hearken to the voice of the people in all that they say to thee. For they have not rejected thee, but me, that I should not reign over them.7 El Señor dijo a Samuel: «Escucha al pueblo en todo lo que ellos digan, porque no es a ti a quien rechazan: me rechazan a mí, para que no reine más sobre ellos.
According to all their works, they have done from the day that I brought them out of Egypt until this day: as they have forsaken me, and served strange gods, so do they also unto thee.8 Como se comportaron conmigo desde el día en que los hice subir de Egipto hasta el día de hoy, abandonándome a mí para servir a otros dioses, así se comportan también contigo.
Now therefore hearken to their voice: but yet testify to them, and foretell them the right of the king, that shall reign over them.9 Por eso, escucha su reclamo. Pero les harás una solemne advertencia y les explicarás cuál es el derecho del rey que reinará sobre ellos».
Then Samuel told all the words of the Lord to the people that had desired a king of him,10 Samuel comunicó todas las palabras del Señor al pueblo que le pedía un rey,
And said: This will be the right of the king, that shall reign over you: He will take your sons, and put them in his chariots, and will make them his horsemen, and his running footmen to run before his chariots,11 diciendo: «Este será el derecho del rey que reinará sobre ustedes, los destinará a sus carros de guerra y a su caballería, y ellos correrán delante de su carro.
And he will appoint of them to be his tribunes, and centurions, and to plough his fields, and to reap his corn, and to make him arms and chariots.12 Los empleará como jefes de mil y de cincuenta hombres, y les hará cultivar sus campos, recoger sus cosechas, y fabricar sus armas de guerra y los arneses de sus carros.
Your daughters also he will take to make him ointments, and to be his cooks, and bakers.13 Tomará a las hijas de ustedes como perfumistas, cocineras y panaderas.
And he will take your fields, and your vineyards, and your best oliveyards, and give them to his servants.14 Les quitará a ustedes los mejores campos, viñedos y olivares, para dárselos a sus servidores.
Moreover he will take the tenth of your corn, and of the revenues of your vineyards, to give his eunuchs and servants.15 Exigirá el diezmo de los sembrados y las viñas, para entregarlo a sus eunucos y a sus servidores.
Your servants also and handmaids, and your goodliest young men, and your asses he will take away, and put them to his work.16 Les quitará sus mejores esclavos, sus bueyes y sus asnos, para emplearlos en sus propios trabajos.
Your flocks also he will tithe, and you shall be his servants.17 Exigirá el diezmo de los rebaños, y ustedes mismos serán sus esclavos.
And you shall cry out in that day from the face of the king, whom you have chosen to yourselves. and the Lord will not hear you in that day, because you desired unto yourselves a king.18 Entonces, ustedes clamarán a causa del rey que se han elegido, pero aquel día el Señor no les responderá».
But the people would not hear the voice of Samuel, and they said: Nay: but there shall be a king over us.19 El pueblo se negó a escuchar la voz de Samuel, e insistió: «¡No! Habrá un rey sobre nosotros,
And we also will be like all nations: and our king shall judge us, and go out before us, and tight our battles for us.20 y así seremos como todas las naciones. Nuestro rey nos juzgará, saldrá al frente de nosotros y combatirá en nuestros combates».
And Samuel heard all the words of the people, and rehearsed them in the ears of the Lord.21 Samuel escuchó todas las palabras del pueblo y las repitió en presencia del Señor.
And the Lord said to Samuel: Hearken to their voice, and make them a king. And Samuel said to the men of Israel: Let every man go to his city.22 El Señor dijo a Samuel: «Escúchalos y dales un rey». Entonces Samuel dijo a los hombres de Israel: «Vuelvan cada uno a su ciudad».
