1 Now the children of Israel had also sworn in Maspha, saying: None of us shall give of his daughters to the children of Benjamin to wife.	1 Les enfants d'Israël firent aussi un serment à Maspha, et ils dirent : Nul d'entre nous ne donnera sa fille en mariage aux enfants de Benjamin.
2 And they all came to the house of God in Silo, and abiding before him till the evening, lifted up their voices, and began to lament and weep, saying:	2 Et ils vinrent tous à la maison de Dieu, à Silo, et, se tenant assis en sa présence jusqu'au soir, ils élevèrent la voix, et commencèrent à pleurer en jetant de grands cris et en disant :
3 O Lord God of Israel, why is so great an evil come to pass in thy people, that this day one tribe should be taken away from among us?	3 Seigneur Dieu d'Israël, pourquoi est-il arrivé un si grand malheur à votre peuple, qu'aujourd'hui une des tribus ait été retranchée d'entre nous ?
4 And rising early the next day, they built an altar: and offered there holocausts, and victims of peace, and they said:	4 (Mais) Le lendemain, ils se levèrent au point du jour, dressèrent un autel, et y offrirent des holocaustes et des victimes pacifiques, et dirent :
5 Who is there among all the tribes of Israel that came not up with the army of the Lord? for they had bound themselves with a great oath, when they were in Maspha, that whosoever were wanting should be slain.	5 Qui d'entre toutes les tribus d'Israël n'a point marché avec l'armée du Seigneur ? Car, étant à Maspha, ils s'étaient engagés par un grand serment à tuer tous ceux qui auraient manqué de s'y trouver.
6 And the children of Israel being moved with repentance for their brother Benjamin, began to say: One tribe is taken away from Israel.	6 Et les enfants d'Israël, touchés de repentir et de ce qui était arrivé à leurs frères de Benjamin, commencèrent à dire : Une des tribus a été retranchée d'Israël ;
7 Whence shall they take wives? For we have all in general sworn, not to give our daughters to them.	7 où prendront-ils des femmes ? Car nous avons juré tous ensemble que nous ne leur donnerions pas nos filles.
8 Therefore they said: Who is thereof all the tribes of Israel, that came not up to the Lord to Maspha. And behold the inhabitants of Jabes Galaad were found not to have been in that army.	8 Ils s'entredirent donc : Quels sont ceux de toutes les tribus d'Israël qui ne sont point venus en la présence du Seigneur à Maspha ? Et il se trouva que les habitants de Jabès-Galaad n'avaient point paru dans l'armée.
9 (At that time also when they were in Silo, no one of them was found there.)	9 Et en effet, au temps où les enfants d'Israël étaient à Silo, il ne se trouva parmi eux aucun homme de Jabès.
10 So they sent ten thousand of the most valiant men, and commanded them, saying: Go and put the inhabitants of Jabes Galaad to the sword, with their wives and their children.	10 Ils envoyèrent donc dix mille hommes très vaillants, avec cet ordre : Allez et faites passer au fil de l'épée tous les habitants de Jabès-Galaad, sans épargner ni les femmes ni les petits enfants.
11 And this is what you shall observe: Every male, and all women that have known men, you shall kill, but the virgins you shall save.	11 Et vous observerez ceci en même temps : Tuez tous les mâles et toutes les femmes mariées ; mais réservez les vierges.
12 And there were found of Jabes Galaad four hundred virgins, that had not known the bed of a man, and they brought them to the camp Silo, into the land of Chanaan.	12 Il se trouva dans Jabès-Galaad quatre cents vierges qui étaient demeurées toujours pures ; et ils les amenèrent au camp, à Silo, au pays de Chanaan.
13 And they sent messengers to the children of Benjamin, that were in the rock Remmon, and commanded them to receive them in peace.	13 Ils envoyèrent ensuite des messagers aux enfants de Benjamin qui étaient au rocher de Remmon, avec ordre de leur dire qu'on voulait vivre en paix avec eux.
14 And the children of Benjamin came at that time, and wives were given them of the daughters of Jabes Galaad: but they found no others, whom they might give in like manner.	14 Alors les enfants de Benjamin revinrent chez eux, et on leur donna pour femmes ces jeunes filles de Jabès-Galaad ; mais on n'en trouva pas d'autres qu'on pût leur donner de la même manière.
15 And all Israel was very sorry, and repented for the destroying of one tribe out of Israel.	15 Tout Israël fut alors touché d'une grande douleur, et ils eurent un extrême regret qu'une (du meurtre) des tribus d'Israël eût péri de la sorte.
16 And the ancients said: What shall we do with the rest, that have not received wives? for all the women in Benjamin are dead.	16 Et les anciens du peuple dirent : Que ferons-nous aux autres à qui on n'a pas donné de femmes ? Car toutes les femmes de la tribu de Benjamin ont été tuées.
17 And we must use all care, and provide with great diligence, that one tribe be not destroyed out of Israel.	17 Et il n'est rien que nous ne devions faire pour empêcher, autant qu'il est en notre pouvoir, qu'une des tribus d'Israël ne périsse.
18 For as to our own daughters we cannot give them, being bound with an oath and a curse, whereby we said: Cursed be he that shall give Benjamin any of his daughters to wife.	18 Cependant nous ne pouvons leur donner nos filles, étant liés par notre serment et par les imprécations (la malédiction) que nous avons faites en disant : Maudit soit celui qui donnera sa fille en mariage aux enfants de Benjamin.
19 So they took counsel, and said: Behold there is a yearly solemnity of the Lord in Silo, which is situate on the north of the city of Bethel, and on the east side of the way, that goeth from Bethel to Sichem, and on the south of the town of Lebona.	19 Ils prirent donc la résolution suivante, et ils dirent : Voici la fête solennelle du Seigneur qui se célèbre tous les sept ans à Silo, localité située au nord de la ville de Béthel, et à l'est du chemin qui va de Béthel à Sichem, et au midi de la ville de Lébona.
20 And they commanded the children of Benjamin, and said: Go, and lie hid in the vineyards,	20 Puis ils donnèrent cet ordre aux enfants de Benjamin : Allez, leur dirent-ils, et cachez-vous dans les vignes.
21 And when you shall see the daughters of Silo come out, as the custom is, to dance, come ye on a sudden out of the vineyards, and catch you every man his wife among them, and go into the land of Benjamin.	21 Et lorsque vous verrez les jeunes filles de Silo s'avancer pour former des chœurs de danse selon la coutume, sortez tout à coup des vignes, et que chacun de vous en prenne une pour sa femme ; et retournez au pays de Benjamin.
22 And when their fathers and their brethren shall come, and shall begin to complain against you, and to chide, we will say to them: Have pity on them for they took them not away as by the right of war or conquest, but when they asked to have them, you gave them not, and the fault was committed on your part.	22 Et lorsque leur père et leurs frères viendront se plaindre de vous et vous accuser, nous leur dirons : Ayez compassion d'eux ; car ils ne les ont pas prises comme des vainqueurs par le droit de la guerre ; mais, après qu'ils vous ont suppliés de leur donner vos filles, vous les leur avez refusées, et ainsi la faute est venue de vous.
23 And the children of Benjamin did, as they had been commanded: and according to their number, they carried off for themselves every man his wife of them that were dancing: and they went into their possession and built up their cities, and dwelt in them.	23 Les enfants de Benjamin firent ce qui leur avait été commandé, et, selon leur nombre, chacun d'eux enleva pour en faire sa femme une des jeunes filles qui dansaient. Etant ensuite retournés chez eux, ils bâtirent des villes et y habitèrent.
24 The children of Israel also returned by their tribes, and families, to their dwellings. In those days there was no king in Israel: but every one did that which seemed right to himself.	24 Les enfants d'Israël retournèrent aussi dans leurs tentes (tabernacles), chacun dans sa tribu et dans sa famille. En ce temps-là il n'y avait point de roi dans Israël ; mais chacun faisait ce qu'il jugeait à propos (lui paraissait juste).
