That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the word of life:1 Something which has existed since the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with ourown eyes, which we have watched and touched with our own hands, the Word of life -- this is our theme.
For the life was manifested; and we have seen and do bear witness, and declare unto you the life eternal, which was with the Father, and hath appeared to us:2 That life was made visible; we saw it and are giving our testimony, declaring to you the eternal life,which was present to the Father and has been revealed to us.
That which we have seen and have heard, we declare unto you, that you also may have fellowship with us, and our fellowship may be with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.3 We are declaring to you what we have seen and heard, so that you too may share our life. Our life isshared with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ.
And these things we write to you, that you may rejoice, and your joy may be full.4 We are writing this to you so that our joy may be complete.
And this is the declaration which we have heard from him, and declare unto you: That God is light, and in him there is no darkness.5 This is what we have heard from him and are declaring to you: God is light, and there is no darkness inhim at al .
If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth.6 If we say that we share in God's life while we are living in darkness, we are lying, because we are notliving the truth.
But if we walk in the light, as he also is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.7 But if we live in light, as he is in light, we have a share in another's life, and the blood of Jesus, his Son,cleanses us from all sin.
If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.8 If we say, 'We have no sin,' we are deceiving ourselves, and truth has no place in us;
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just, to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all iniquity.9 if we acknowledge our sins, he is trustworthy and upright, so that he will forgive our sins and wilcleanse us from all evil.
If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.10 If we say, 'We have never sinned,' we make him a liar, and his word has no place in us.
