DOUAI-RHEIMSLXX
And the word of the Lord came to me, saying:1 -
Go, and cry in the ears of Jerusalem, saying: Thus saith the Lord: I have remembered thee, pitying thy soul, pitying thy youth, and the love of thy espousals, when thou followedst me in the desert, in a land that is not sown.2 και ειπεν ταδε λεγει κυριος εμνησθην ελεους νεοτητος σου και αγαπης τελειωσεως σου του εξακολουθησαι σε τω αγιω ισραηλ λεγει κυριος
Israel is holy to the Lord, the first fruits of his increase: all they that devour him offend: evils shall come upon them, saith the Lord.3 αγιος ισραηλ τω κυριω αρχη γενηματων αυτου παντες οι εσθοντες αυτον πλημμελησουσιν κακα ηξει επ' αυτους φησιν κυριος
Hear ye the word of the Lord, O house of Jacob, and all ye families of the house of Israel.4 ακουσατε λογον κυριου οικος ιακωβ και πασα πατρια οικου ισραηλ
Thus saith the Lord: What iniquity have your fathers found in me, that they are gone far from me, and have walked after vanity, and are become vain?5 ταδε λεγει κυριος τι ευροσαν οι πατερες υμων εν εμοι πλημμελημα οτι απεστησαν μακραν απ' εμου και επορευθησαν οπισω των ματαιων και εματαιωθησαν
And they have not said: Where is the Lord, that made us come up out of the land of Egypt? that led us through the desert, through a land uninhabited and unpassable, through a land of drought, and the image of death, through a land wherein no man walked, nor any man dwelt?6 και ουκ ειπαν που εστιν κυριος ο αναγαγων ημας εκ γης αιγυπτου ο καθοδηγησας ημας εν τη ερημω εν γη απειρω και αβατω εν γη ανυδρω και ακαρπω εν γη εν η ου διωδευσεν εν αυτη ουθεν και ου κατωκησεν εκει υιος ανθρωπου
And I brought you into the land of Carmel, to eat the fruit thereof, and the best things thereof: ad when ye entered in, you defiled my land, and made my inheritance an abomination.7 και εισηγαγον υμας εις τον καρμηλον του φαγειν υμας τους καρπους αυτου και τα αγαθα αυτου και εισηλθατε και εμιανατε την γην μου και την κληρονομιαν μου εθεσθε εις βδελυγμα
The priests did not say: Where is the Lord? and they that held the law knew me not, and the pastors transgressed against me: and the prophets prophesied in Baal, and followed idols.8 οι ιερεις ουκ ειπαν που εστιν κυριος και οι αντεχομενοι του νομου ουκ ηπισταντο με και οι ποιμενες ησεβουν εις εμε και οι προφηται επροφητευον τη βααλ και οπισω ανωφελους επορευθησαν
Therefore will I yet contend in judgement with you, saith the Lord, and I will plead with your children.9 δια τουτο ετι κριθησομαι προς υμας λεγει κυριος και προς τους υιους των υιων υμων κριθησομαι
Pass over to the isles of Cethim, and see: and send into Cedar, and consider diligently: and see if there hath been done any thing like this.10 διοτι διελθετε εις νησους χεττιιμ και ιδετε και εις κηδαρ αποστειλατε και νοησατε σφοδρα και ιδετε ει γεγονεν τοιαυτα
If a nation hath changed their gods, and indeed they are not gods,: but my people have changed their glory into an idol.11 ει αλλαξονται εθνη θεους αυτων και ουτοι ουκ εισιν θεοι ο δε λαος μου ηλλαξατο την δοξαν αυτου εξ ης ουκ ωφεληθησονται
Be astonished, O ye heavens, at this, and ye gates thereof, be very desolate, saith the Lord.12 εξεστη ο ουρανος επι τουτω και εφριξεν επι πλειον σφοδρα λεγει κυριος
For my people have done two evils. They have forsaken me, the fountain of living water, and have digged to themselves cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.13 οτι δυο πονηρα εποιησεν ο λαος μου εμε εγκατελιπον πηγην υδατος ζωης και ωρυξαν εαυτοις λακκους συντετριμμενους οι ου δυνησονται υδωρ συνεχειν
Is Israel a bondman, or a homeborn slave? why then is he become prey?14 μη δουλος εστιν ισραηλ η οικογενης εστιν δια τι εις προνομην εγενετο
The lions have roared upon him, and have made a noise, they have made his land a wilderness: his cities are burnt down and there is none to dwell in them.15 επ' αυτον ωρυοντο λεοντες και εδωκαν την φωνην αυτων οι εταξαν την γην αυτου εις ερημον και αι πολεις αυτου κατεσκαφησαν παρα το μη κατοικεισθαι
The children also of Memphis, and of Taphnes have deflowered thee, even to the crown of the head.16 και υιοι μεμφεως και ταφνας εγνωσαν σε και κατεπαιζον σου
Hath not this been done to thee, because thou hast forsaken the Lord thy God at that time, when he led thee by the way?17 ουχι ταυτα εποιησεν σοι το καταλιπειν σε εμε λεγει κυριος ο θεος σου
And now what hast thou to do in the way of Egypt, to drink the troubled water? And what hast thou to do with the way of the Assyrians, to drink the water of the river?18 και νυν τι σοι και τη οδω αιγυπτου του πιειν υδωρ γηων και τι σοι και τη οδω ασσυριων του πιειν υδωρ ποταμων
Thy own wickedness shall reprove thee, and thy apostasy shall rebuke thee. Know thou, and see that it is an evil and a bitter thing for thee, to have left the Lord thy God, and that my fear is not with thee, saith the Lord the God of hosts.19 παιδευσει σε η αποστασια σου και η κακια σου ελεγξει σε και γνωθι και ιδε οτι πικρον σοι το καταλιπειν σε εμε λεγει κυριος ο θεος σου και ουκ ευδοκησα επι σοι λεγει κυριος ο θεος σου
Of old time thou hast broken my yoke, thou hast burst my bands, and thou saidst: I will not serve. For on every high hill, and under every green tree thou didst prostitute thyself.20 οτι απ' αιωνος συνετριψας τον ζυγον σου διεσπασας τους δεσμους σου και ειπας ου δουλευσω αλλα πορευσομαι επι παν βουνον υψηλον και υποκατω παντος ξυλου κατασκιου εκει διαχυθησομαι εν τη πορνεια μου
Yet I planted thee a chosen vineyard, all true seed: how then art thou turned unto me into that which is good for nothing, O strange vineyard?21 εγω δε εφυτευσα σε αμπελον καρποφορον πασαν αληθινην πως εστραφης εις πικριαν η αμπελος η αλλοτρια
Though thou wash thyself with nitre, and multiply to thyself the herb borith, thou art stained in thy iniquity before me, saith the Lord God.22 εαν αποπλυνη εν νιτρω και πληθυνης σεαυτη ποαν κεκηλιδωσαι εν ταις αδικιαις σου εναντιον εμου λεγει κυριος
How canst thou say: I am not polluted, and I have not walked after Baalim? see thy ways in the valley, know what thou hast done: as a swift runner pursuing his course.23 πως ερεις ουκ εμιανθην και οπισω της βααλ ουκ επορευθην ιδε τας οδους σου εν τω πολυανδριω και γνωθι τι εποιησας οψε φωνη αυτης ωλολυξεν τας οδους αυτης
A wild ass accustomed to the wilderness in the desire of his heart, snuffed up the wind of his love: none shall turn her away: all that seek her shall not fail: in her monthly filth they shall find her.24 επλατυνεν εφ' υδατα ερημου εν επιθυμιαις ψυχης αυτης επνευματοφορειτο παρεδοθη τις επιστρεψει αυτην παντες οι ζητουντες αυτην ου κοπιασουσιν εν τη ταπεινωσει αυτης ευρησουσιν αυτην
Keep thy foot from being bare, and thy throat from thirst. But thou saidst: I have lost all hope, I will not do it: for I have loved strangers, and I will walk after them.25 αποστρεψον τον ποδα σου απο οδου τραχειας και τον φαρυγγα σου απο διψους η δε ειπεν ανδριουμαι οτι ηγαπηκει αλλοτριους και οπισω αυτων επορευετο
As the thief is confounded when he is taken, so is the house of Israel confounded, they and their kings, their princes and their priests, and their prophets.26 ως αισχυνη κλεπτου οταν αλω ουτως αισχυνθησονται οι υιοι ισραηλ αυτοι και οι βασιλεις αυτων και οι αρχοντες αυτων και οι ιερεις αυτων και οι προφηται αυτων
Saying to a stock: Thou art my father: and to a stone: thou hast begotten me: they have turned their back to me, and not their face: and in the time of their affliction they will say: Arise, and deliver us.27 τω ξυλω ειπαν οτι πατηρ μου ει συ και τω λιθω συ εγεννησας με και εστρεψαν επ' εμε νωτα και ου προσωπα αυτων και εν τω καιρω των κακων αυτων ερουσιν αναστα και σωσον ημας
Where are the gods, whom thou hast made thee? let them arise and deliver thee in the time of thy affliction: for according to the number of thy cities were thy gods, O Juda.28 και που εισιν οι θεοι σου ους εποιησας σεαυτω ει αναστησονται και σωσουσιν σε εν καιρω της κακωσεως σου οτι κατ' αριθμον των πολεων σου ησαν θεοι σου ιουδα και κατ' αριθμον διοδων της ιερουσαλημ εθυον τη βααλ
Why will you contend with me in judgement? you have all forsaken me, saith the Lord.29 ινα τι λαλειτε προς με παντες υμεις ησεβησατε και παντες υμεις ηνομησατε εις εμε λεγει κυριος
In vain have I struck your children, they have not received correction: your sword hath devoured your prophets, your generation is like a ravaging lion.30 ματην επαταξα τα τεκνα υμων παιδειαν ουκ εδεξασθε μαχαιρα κατεφαγεν τους προφητας υμων ως λεων ολεθρευων και ουκ εφοβηθητε
See ye the word of the Lord: Am I become a wilderness to Israel, or a lateward springing land? why then have my people said: We are revolted, we will come to thee no more.31 ακουσατε λογον κυριου ταδε λεγει κυριος μη ερημος εγενομην τω ισραηλ η γη κεχερσωμενη δια τι ειπεν ο λαος μου ου κυριευθησομεθα και ουχ ηξομεν προς σε ετι
Will a virgin forget her ornament, or a bride her stomacher? but my people hath forgotten me days without number.32 μη επιλησεται νυμφη τον κοσμον αυτης και παρθενος την στηθοδεσμιδα αυτης ο δε λαος μου επελαθετο μου ημερας ων ουκ εστιν αριθμος
Why dost thou endeavor to shew thy way good to seek my love, thou who has also taught thy malices to be thy ways,33 τι ετι καλον επιτηδευσεις εν ταις οδοις σου του ζητησαι αγαπησιν ουχ ουτως αλλα και συ επονηρευσω του μιαναι τας οδους σου
And in thy skirts is found the blood of the souls of the poor and innocent? not in ditches have I found them, but in all places, which I mentioned before.34 και εν ταις χερσιν σου ευρεθησαν αιματα ψυχων αθωων ουκ εν διορυγμασιν ευρον αυτους αλλ' επι παση δρυι
And thou hast said: I am without sin and am innocent: and therefore let thy anger be turned away from me. Behold, I will contend with thee in judgement, because thou hast said: I have not sinned.35 και ειπας αθωος ειμι αλλα αποστραφητω ο θυμος αυτου απ' εμου ιδου εγω κρινομαι προς σε εν τω λεγειν σε ουχ ημαρτον
How exceeding base art thou become, going the same ways over again! and thou shalt be ashamed of Egypt, as thou wast ashamed of Assyria.36 τι κατεφρονησας σφοδρα του δευτερωσαι τας οδους σου και απο αιγυπτου καταισχυνθηση καθως κατησχυνθης απο ασσουρ
For from thence thou shalt go, and thy hand shall be upon thy head: for the Lord hath destroyed thy trust, and thou shalt have nothing prosperous therein.37 οτι και εντευθεν εξελευση και αι χειρες σου επι της κεφαλης σου οτι απωσατο κυριος την ελπιδα σου και ουκ ευοδωθηση εν αυτη
