1 But thou, our God, art gracious and true, patient, and ordering all things in mercy.	1 Du aber, unser Gott, bist gütig und treu, langmütig und das All mit Erbarmen lenkend!
2 For if we sin, we are thine, knowing thy greatness: and if we sin not, we know that we are counted with thee.	2 Denn auch wenn wir sündigten, sind wir dein, da wir deine Macht kennen. Wir wollen aber nicht sündigen, im Bewußtsein, dir anzugehören.
3 For to know thee is perfect justice: and to know thy justice, and thy power, is the root of immortality.	3 Denn dich verstehen ist vollkommene Gerechtigkeit, und deine Macht erkennen ist Wurzel der Unsterblichkeit.
4 For the invention of mischievous men hath not deceived us, nor the shadow of a picture, a fruitless labour, a graven figure with divers colours,	4 Uns hat ja nicht verführt, was der Menschen schlechte Kunst sich ausdachte, noch der Maler nichtsnutzige Arbeit, eine Figur, mit bunten Farben bepinselt,
5 The sight whereof enticeth the fool to lust after it, and he loveth the lifeless figure of a dead image.	5 deren Anblick die Toren reizt, daß jemand Lust hat an eines toten Bildes lebloser Gestalt.
6 The lovers of evil things deserve to have no better things to trust in, both they that make them, and they that love them,and they that worship them.	6 Liebhaber des Bösen und solcher Hoffnungen würdig sind die Hersteller, die Anhänger und die Anbeter.
7 The potter also tempering soft earth, with labour fashioneth every vessel for our service, and of the same clay he maketh both vessels that are for clean uses, and likewise such as serve to the contrary: but what is the use of these vessels, the potter is the judge.	7 Da knetet etwa ein Töpfer mühsam weiche Erde und formt für unseren Gebrauch jedes einzelne Stück. Aber aus demselben Ton bildet er die sauberen Zwecken dienenden Gefäße wie auch die für das Gegenteil, alle in gleicher Weise. Für welche von diesen beiden Gebrauchsmöglichkeiten ein jedes verwendet werden soll, darüber entscheidet der Tonarbeiter.
8 And of the same clay by a vain labour he maketh a god: he who a little before was made of earth himself, and a little after returneth to the same out of which he was taken, when his life which was lent him shall be called for again.	8 Mit übel angewendeter Mühe formt er einen nichtigen Götzen aus demselben Ton, er, der vor kurzem aus Erde entstanden, alsbald wieder zu ihr zurückkehrt, von der er genommen ward, wenn das Darlehen der Seele von ihm zurückgefordert wird.
9 But his care is, not that he shall labour, nor that his life is short, but he striveth with the goldsmiths and silversmiths: and he endeavoureth to do like the workers in brass, and counteth it a glory to make vain things.	9 Aber es macht ihm keine Sorge, daß er dahinsinken wird und daß er ein kurzfristiges Leben hat, sondern er wetteifert mit Goldschmieden und Silbergießern, ahmt Erzbildner nach und hält es für einen Ruhm, Fälschungen herzustellen.
10 For his heart is ashes, and his hope vain earth, and his life more base than clay:	10 Asche ist sein Herz, minderwertiger als Erde seine Hoffnung und wertloser als Ton sein Leben;
11 Forasmuch as he knew not his maker and him that inspired into him the soul that worketh, and that breathed into him a living spirit.	11 denn er erkannte den nicht, der ihn geformt, ihm eine tätige Seele eingehaucht und den Lebensodem eingeblasen hat.
12 Yea and they have counted our life a pastime, and the business of life to be gain, and that we must be getting every way, even out of evil.	12 Vielmehr hielt er unser Leben für eine Spielerei und das Dasein für einen einträglichen Jahrmarkt; denn man müsse, sagt er, woher auch immer, selbst aus Schlechtem Gewinn ziehen.
13 For that man knoweth that he offendeth above all others, who of earthly matter maketh brittle vessels, and graven gods.	13 Er weiß nämlich besser als alle, daß er Sünde tut, wenn er aus Erdenstoff zerbrechliche Gefäße und zugleich Figuren fertigt.
14 But all the enemies of thy people that hold them in subjection, are foolish, and unhappy, and proud beyond measure:	14 Allesamt aber sind sie höchst unvernünftig und armseliger als eines Kleinkindes Seele, die Feinde deines Volkes, die es geknechtet haben.
15 For they have esteemed all the idols of the heathens for gods, which neither have the use of eyes to see, nor noses to draw breath, nor ears to hear, nor fingers of hands to handle, and as for their feet, they are slow to walk.	15 Denn sogar alle Götzen der Heidenvölker hielten sie für Götter, die weder die Augen brauchen können zum Sehen, noch die Nase, um Luft einzuziehen, noch die Ohren zum Hören, noch die Finger der Hände zum Tasten, und deren Füße untauglich sind zum Gehen.
16 For man made them: and he that borroweth his own breath, fashioned them. For no man can make a god like to himself.	16 Denn ein Mensch hat sie gemacht und einer, dem der Geist nur geliehen, sie gebildet; denn kein Mensch kann einen Gott auch nur sich selbst ähnlich machen.
17 For being mortal himself, he formeth a dead thing with his wicked hands. For he is better than they whom he worshippeth, because he indeed hath lived, though he were mortal, but they never.	17 Vielmehr als Sterblicher kann er nur Totes schaffen mit frevelnden Händen; denn vollkommener ist er als die von ihm verehrten Dinge; bekam doch er selber Leben, jene aber nicht.
18 Moreover they worship also the vilest creatures: but things without sense compared to these, are worse than they.	18 Sogar die häßlichsten Tiere verehren sie; denn verglichen nach der Dummheit, sind diese noch minderwertiger als die anderen Tiere.
19 Yea, neither by sight can any man see good of these beasts. But they have fled from the praise of God, and from his blessing.	19 Sie sind auch nicht schön, so daß man an ihnen, wie sonst etwa beim Anblick von Tieren, Gefallen haben könnte; sie sind vielmehr des Lobes Gottes und seines Segens bar.
