1 When thou shalt sit to eat with a prince, consider diligently what is set before thy face.	1 Quando sarai assiso alla mensa del principe, pon mente, e fa attenzione a quelle cose, che ti son posta davanti:
2 And put a knife to thy throat, if it be so that thou have thy soul in thy own power.	2 E mettiti un coltello alla gola, sa pure sei padrone dell'anima tua.
3 Be not desirous of his meats, in which is the bread of deceit.	3 Non desiderare le sue vivande, perché elle son cibo che inganna.
4 Labour not to be rich: but set bounds to thy prudence.	4 Non ti affannare per diventare ricco; ma modera la tua sollecitudine.
5 Lift not up thy eyes to riches which thou canst not have: because they shall make themselves wings like those of an eagle, and shall fly towards heaven.	5 Non alzare gli occhi alle ricchezze, che aver non puoi: perocché elle prenderanno ale come di aquila, e voleranno per lo cielo.
6 Eat not with an envious man, and desire not his meats:	6 Non andar a mangiare coll'avaro, e non desiderare la sua tavola:
7 Because like a soothsayer, and diviner, he thinketh that which he knoweth not. Eat and drink, will he say to thee: and his mind is not with thee.	7 Perché egli a imitazione dell'indovino, e dell'astrologo congettura quello, che non sa. Egli ti dirà: Mangia, e bevi; ma il cuore di lui non è con te.
8 The meats which thou hadst eaten, thou shalt vomit up: and shalt loose thy beautiful words.	8 Tu vomiterai quello, che avrai mangiato, e farai getto di tue belle parole.
9 Speak not in the ears of fools: because they will despise the instruction of thy speech.	9 Non ti mettere a ragionare dinanzi agli stolti, perché sprezzeranno i tuoi sensati ragionamenti.
10 Touch not the bounds of little ones: and enter not into the field of the fatherless:	10 Non toccare i termini dei padroni di tenera età; e non metter piede nel podere de' pupilli:
11 For their near kinsman is strong: and he will judge their cause against thee.	11 Imperocché il loro curatore è forte, ed egli giudicherà la causa di quelli contro di te.
12 Let thy heart apply itself to instruction: and thy ears to words of knowledge.	12 Applica alla dottrina il tuo cuore, e le tue orecchie alle parole della scienza.
13 Withhold not correction from a child: for if thou strike him with the rod, he shall not die.	13 Non privare il fanciullo della correzione: perocché se tu lo percuoterai colla verga, egli non morrà.
14 Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and deliver his soul from hell.	14 Tu lo percuoterai colla verga, e libererai l'anima di lui dall'inferno.
15 My son, if thy mind be wise, my heart shall rejoice with thee:	15 Figliuol mio, se il cuor tuo sarà saggio, il mio cuore se ne congratulerà con teco:
16 And my reins shall rejoice, when thy lips shall speak what is right.	16 E le mie viscere esulteranno, allorché le tue labbra esporranno documenti di giustizia.
17 Let not thy heart envy sinners: but be thou in the fear of the Lord all the day long:	17 Non portar invidia in cuor tuo ai peccatori; ma sta fisso perpetuamente nel timor del Signore:
18 Because thou shalt have hope in the latter end, and thy expectation shall not be taken away.	18 Perocché averai alla fine quello che speri, e noli ti sarà tolta la tua espettazione.
19 Hear thou, my son, and be wise: and guide thy mind in the way.	19 Figliuol mio, ascolta, ed avrai saggezza: e indirizzerai nella via (il lei) il cuor tuo.
20 Be not in the feasts of great drinkers, nor in their revellings, who contribute flesh to eat:	20 Non frequentare i conviti de' buoni, né le gozzoviglie di quelli, che mettono insieme la lor porzione delle carni per banchettare:
21 Because they that give themselves to drinking, and that club together shall be consumed; and drowsiness shall be clothed with rags.	21 Perocché questi sbevazzando, e pagando lo scotto si rifiniscono, e dormiglioni come sono si riducono ai cenci.
22 Hearken to thy father, that beget thee: and despise not thy mother when she is old.	22 Ascolta il padre tuo, che ti ha generato, e non disprezzare la madre tua quando sia invecchiata.
23 Buy truth, and do not sell wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.	23 Compera la verità, e non alienare sapienza, la dottrina, e l'intelligenza.
24 The father of the just rejoiceth greatly: he that hath begotten a wise son, shall have joy in him.	24 Il padre del giusto nuota nel gaudio: colui che ha generato un uom saggio, avrà in lui la sua consolazione.
25 Let thy father, and thy mother be joyful, and let her rejoice that bore thee.	25 Abbia questo gaudio il padre tuo, e la madre tua: ed esulti colei, che ti ha generato.
26 My son, give me thy heart: and let thy eyes keep my ways.	26 Figliuol mio, dammi il tuo cuore: e gli occhi tuoi siano intenti alle mie vie.
27 For a harlot is a deep ditch: and a strange woman is a narrow pit.	27 Perocché fossa profonda è la donna impudica, e pozzo stretto l'adultera.
28 She lieth in wait in the way as a robber, and him whom she shall see unwary, she will kill.	28 Ella tende insidie sulla strada come un ladrone, e ucciderà quanti vedrà degli incauti.
29 Who hath woe? whose father hath woe? who hath contentions? who falls into pits? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes?	29 A chi i guai? al padre di chi i guai? a chi le risse? a chi i precipizi? a chi le ferite, senza che si sappia il perché? a chi gli occhi salariati?
30 Surely they that pass their time in wine, and study to drink of their cups.	30 Se non a quelli, che si stanno col vino, e si studiano di votar più bicchieri?
31 Look not upon the wine when it is yellow, when the colour thereof shineth in the glass: it goeth in pleasantly,	31 Non guardare il vino quando rosseggia, quando il suo bel colore risplende nel vetro: egli entra con grazia,
32 But in the end, it will bite like a snake, and will spread abroad poison like a basilisk.	32 Ma alla fine morde come serpente, e sparge veleno, come un basilisco.
33 Thy eyes shall behold strange women, and thy heart shall utter perverse things.	33 Gli occhi tuoi mireranno la donna altrui: e la tua bocca parlerà di cose perverse.
34 And thou shalt be as one sleeping in the midst of the sea, and as a pilot fast asleep, when the stern is lost.	34 E tu sarai come uno che dorme in mezzo al mare, e come un piloto abbandonato al sonno, che ha perduto il timone:
35 And thou shalt say: They have beaten me, but I was not sensible of pain: they drew me, and I felt not: when shall I awake, and find wine again?	35 E dirai: Mi hanno battuto; ma io non ne ho sentito dolore: mi hanno strascinato, ma io non me ne sono accorto; quando mi leverò, e tornerò, a bere di nuovo?
