Proverbs 23

DOUAI-RHEIMS	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 When thou shalt sit to eat with a prince, consider diligently what is set before thy face.	1 Si te sientas a la mesa con un señor, fíjate bien en lo que tienes delante;
2 And put a knife to thy throat, if it be so that thou have thy soul in thy own power.	2 clava un cuchillo en tu garganta, si tienes mucho apetito.
3 Be not desirous of his meats, in which is the bread of deceit.	3 No ambiciones sus manjares, porque son un alimento engañoso.
4 Labour not to be rich: but set bounds to thy prudence.	4 No te afanes por enriquecerte, deja de pensar en eso.
5 Lift not up thy eyes to riches which thou canst not have: because they shall make themselves wings like those of an eagle, and shall fly towards heaven.	5 Tus ojos vuelan hacia la riqueza, y ya no hay nada, porque ella se pone alas y vuela hacia el cielo como un águila.
6 Eat not with an envious man, and desire not his meats:	6 No comas el pan del hombre malicioso ni codicies sus manjares,
7 Because like a soothsayer, and diviner, he thinketh that which he knoweth not. Eat and drink, will he say to thee: and his mind is not with thee.	7 porque él es en realidad como piensa dentro de sí: «Come y bebe», te dice, pero su corazón no está contigo.
8 The meats which thou hadst eaten, thou shalt vomit up: and shalt loose thy beautiful words.	8 El bocado que comiste, lo vomitarás, y habrás desperdiciado tus lindas palabras.
9 Speak not in the ears of fools: because they will despise the instruction of thy speech.	9 No hables a los oídos de un insensato, porque despreciará el buen sentido de tus palabras.
10 Touch not the bounds of little ones: and enter not into the field of the fatherless:	10 No desplaces los linderos antiguos, ni te metas en los campos de los huérfanos,
11 For their near kinsman is strong: and he will judge their cause against thee.	11 porque su Vengador es poderoso y defenderá su causa contra ti.
12 Let thy heart apply itself to instruction: and thy ears to words of knowledge.	12 Abre tu corazón a la instrucción y tus oídos a las palabras de la ciencia.
13 Withhold not correction from a child: for if thou strike him with the rod, he shall not die.	13 No mezquines la corrección a un niño: si lo golpeas con la vara, no morirá.
14 Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and deliver his soul from hell.	14 Tú lo golpearás con la vara, y librarás su vida del Abismo.
15 My son, if thy mind be wise, my heart shall rejoice with thee:	15 Hijo mío, si tu corazón es sabio, también se alegrará mi corazón:
16 And my reins shall rejoice, when thy lips shall speak what is right.	16 mis entrañas se regocijarán, cuando tus labios hablen con rectitud.
17 Let not thy heart envy sinners: but be thou in the fear of the Lord all the day long:	17 Que tu corazón no envidie a los pecadores, sino que siempre tema al Señor.
18 Because thou shalt have hope in the latter end, and thy expectation shall not be taken away.	18 Así, ciertamente, tendrás un porvenir y tu esperanza no quedará defraudada.
19 Hear thou, my son, and be wise: and guide thy mind in the way.	19 Escucha, hijo mío, y te harás sabio, y enderezarás tu corazón por el buen camino.
20 Be not in the feasts of great drinkers, nor in their revellings, who contribute flesh to eat:	20 No te juntes con los borrachos ni con los que se hartan de carne,
21 Because they that give themselves to drinking, and that club together shall be consumed; and drowsiness shall be clothed with rags.	21 porque el borracho y el glotón se empobrecen, y la modorra hace andar vestido con harapos.
22 Hearken to thy father, that beget thee: and despise not thy mother when she is old.	22 Escucha a tu padre, que te engendró, y no desprecies a tu madre cuando sea vieja.
23 Buy truth, and do not sell wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.	23 Adquiere la verdad y no la vendas, lo mismo que la sabiduría, la instrucción y la inteligencia.
24 The father of the just rejoiceth greatly: he that hath begotten a wise son, shall have joy in him.	24 El padre de un justo se llena de gozo, el que tiene un hijo sabio se alegra por él:
25 Let thy father, and thy mother be joyful, and let her rejoice that bore thee.	25 ¡que se alegren tu padre y tu madre y se llene de gozo la que te hizo nacer!
26 My son, give me thy heart: and let thy eyes keep my ways.	26 Hijo mío, préstame atención y acepta de buena gana mis caminos.
27 For a harlot is a deep ditch: and a strange woman is a narrow pit.	27 Porque la prostituta es una fosa profunda y la mujer extraña, un pozo estrecho:
28 She lieth in wait in the way as a robber, and him whom she shall see unwary, she will kill.	28 también ella está al acecho como un ladrón y multiplica las traiciones entre los hombres.
29 Who hath woe? whose father hath woe? who hath contentions? who falls into pits? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes?	29 ¿Para quién los lamentos? ¿Para quién los quejidos? ¿Para quién las querellas? ¿Para quién los suspiros? ¿Para quién las heridas sin motivo? ¿Para quién la mirada turbia?
30 Surely they that pass their time in wine, and study to drink of their cups.	30 Para los que se pasan bebiendo y van en busca de vino aromatizado.
31 Look not upon the wine when it is yellow, when the colour thereof shineth in the glass: it goeth in pleasantly,	31 No mires el vino: ¡qué rojo es! ¡Cómo centellea en la copa! ¡Cómo fluye suavemente!
32 But in the end, it will bite like a snake, and will spread abroad poison like a basilisk.	32 Pero al fin muerde como una serpiente y pica como una víbora.
33 Thy eyes shall behold strange women, and thy heart shall utter perverse things.	33 Tus ojos verán cosas extrañas, tu corazón hablará sin ton ni son;
34 And thou shalt be as one sleeping in the midst of the sea, and as a pilot fast asleep, when the stern is lost.	34 serás como un hombre acostado en alta mar, acostado en la punta de un mástil.
35 And thou shalt say: They have beaten me, but I was not sensible of pain: they drew me, and I felt not: when shall I awake, and find wine again?	35 «Me han golpeado, pero no me dolió; me han pegado, pero no me di cuenta. ¿Cuándo me despertaré? ¡Volveré a pedir más todavía!».
