1 And the anger of the Lord was again kindled against Israel, and stirred up David among them, saying: Go, number Israel and Juda.	1 L'ira del Signore si accese ancora una volta contro Israele e incitò Davide contro di esso, così: "Va' a fare il censimento d'Israele e di Giuda".
2 And the king said to Joab the general of his army: Go through all the tribes of Israel from Dan to Bersabee, and number ye the people that I may know the number of them.	2 Il re disse a Ioab, capo dell'esercito che era con lui: "Su, fa' un giro in tutte le tribù d'Israele, da Dan fino a Bersabea, e fate la rassegna del popolo, perché io conosca il numero del popolo".
3 And Joab said to the king: The Lord thy God increase thy people, and make them as many more as they are now, and again multiply them a hundredfold in the sight of my lord the king: but what meaneth my lord the king by this kind of thing?	3 Ioab rispose al re: "Il Signore, tuo Dio, aggiunga al popolo cento volte altrettanto; e gli occhi del re, mio signore, lo possano vedere. Ma il re, mio signore, perché desidera questo?".
4 But the king's words prevailed over the words of Joab, and of the captains of the army: and Joab, and the captains of the soldiers went out from the presence of the king, to number the people of Israel.	4 Prevalse però l'ordine del re su Ioab e sui capi dell'esercito. Allora Ioab e i capi dell'esercito lasciarono il re per andare a recensire la popolazione d'Israele.
5 And when they had passed the Jordan, they came to Aroer to the right side of the city, which is in the vale of Gad.	5 Attraversarono il Giordano e, incominciando da Aroer e dalla città che è nel mezzo della valle di Gad, andarono verso Iazer.
6 And by Jazer they passed into Galaad, and to the lower land of Hodsi, and they came into the woodlands of Dan. And going about by Sidon,	6 Proseguirono in Gàlaad e verso la terra degli Hittiti, a Kades; poi passarono a Dan, e di lì verso Sidone.
7 They passed near the walls of Tyre, and all the land of the Hevite, and the Chanaanite, and they came to the south of Juda into Bersabee:	7 Giunsero alla fortezza di Tiro e in tutte le città degli Evei e dei Cananei, e finirono nel Negheb di Giuda a Bersabea.
8 And having gone through the whole land, after nine months and twenty days, they came to Jerusalem.	8 Percorso tutto il paese, rientrarono a Gerusalemme in capo a nove mesi e venti giorni.
9 And Joab gave up the sum of the number of the people to the king, and there were found of Israel eight hundred thousand valiant men that drew the sword: and of Juda five hundred thousand fighting men.	9 Ioab consegnò al re il numero totale del censimento del popolo: Israele contava ottocentomila uomini validi a maneggiare la spada; gli uomini di Giuda erano cinquecentomila.
10 But David's heart struck him, after the people were numbered: and David said to the Lord: I have sinned very much in what I have done: but I pray thee, O Lord, to take away the iniquity of thy servant, because I have done exceeding foolishly.	10 Ma dopo aver censito il popolo Davide ebbe un rimorso nel cuore. Allora Davide disse al Signore: "Ho peccato gravemente per quello che ho fatto! Ma ora, Signore, togli il peccato del tuo servo, perché ho agito molto stoltamente!".
11 And David arose in the morning, and the word of the Lord came to Gad the prophet and the seer of David, saying:	11 Quando al mattino Davide si alzò, la parola del Signore era stata rivolta al profeta Gad, veggente di Davide, in questi termini:
12 Go, and say to David: Thus saith the Lord: I give thee thy choice of three things, choose one of them which thou wilt, that I may do it to thee.	12 "Va' a parlare a Davide: Così dice il Signore: "Tre cose io ti propongo; scegliti una di esse e io te la farò".
13 And when Gad was come to David, he told him, saying: Either seven years of famine shall come to thee in thy land: or thou shalt flee three months before thy adversaries, and they shall pursue thee: or for three days there shall be a pestilence in thy land. Now therefore deliberate, and see what answer I shall return to him that sent me.	13 Gad entrò da Davide e l'informò dicendogli: "Vuoi che vengano per te sette anni di fame nel tuo paese, o tre mesi di fuga davanti al tuo avversario mentre lui t'inseguirà, o tre giorni di peste nel tuo paese? Ora rifletti e vedi quello che devo rispondere a colui che per me manda il messaggio".
14 And David said to Gad: I am in a great strait: but it is better that I should fall into the hands of the Lord (for his mercies are many) than into the hands of men.	14 Davide rispose a Gad: "Mi trovo in grande angustia! Cadiamo pure in mano del Signore, perché la sua misericordia è grande, ma che io non cada nelle mani degli uomini".
15 And the Lord sent a pestilence upon Israel, from the morning unto the time appointed, and there died of the people from Dan to Bersabee seventy thousand men.	15 Davide scelse la peste. Era il tempo della mietitura dell'orzo. Il Signore mandò la peste in Israele, da quella mattina fino al tempo fissato. Morirono tra il popolo, da Dan fino a Bersabea, settantamila uomini.
16 And when the angel of the Lord had stretched out his hand over Jerusalem to destroy it, the Lord had pity on the affliction, and said to the angel that slew the people: It is enough: now hold thy hand. And the angel of the Lord was by the thrashingfloor of Areuna the Jebusite.	16 L'angelo stese la sua mano verso Gerusalemme per devastarla; ma il Signore si mosse a pietà per il male e disse all'angelo che faceva strage tra il popolo: "Basta! Ora ritira la tua mano!". L'angelo del Signore si trovava presso l'aia di Araunà, il gebuseo.
17 And David said to the Lord, when he saw the angel striking the people: It is I; I am he that have sinned, I have done wickedly: these that are the sheep, what have they done? let thy hand, I beseech thee, be turned against me, and against my father's house.	17 Quando Davide vide l'angelo che colpiva il popolo, disse al Signore: "Ecco, io ho peccato, io ho commesso il male, ma loro che sono il gregge, che cosa hanno fatto? La tua mano sia contro di me e contro la casa di mio padre!".
18 And Gad came to David that day, and said: Go up, and build an altar to the Lord in the thrashingfloor of Areuna the Jebusite.	18 Quel giorno Gad andò da Davide e gli disse: "Sali e innalza un altare al Signore nell'aia di Araunà, il gebuseo".
19 And David went up according to the word of Gad which the Lord had commanded him.	19 Davide vi salì secondo la parola di Gad, come aveva ordinato il Signore.
20 And Areuna looked, and saw the king and his servants coming towards him:	20 Araunà si affacciò e vide il re e i suoi cortigiani che si dirigevano da lui; allora Araunà uscì e si prostrò davanti al re con la faccia a terra.
21 An going out he worshipped the king, bowing with his face to the earth, and said: Wherefore is my lord the king come to his servant? Arid David said to him: To buy the thrashingfloor of thee, and build an altar to the Lord, that the plague, which rageth among the people, may cease.	21 Araunà disse: "Perché il re, mio signore, è venuto dal suo servo?". Davide rispose: "Per comperare da te l'aia per costruire un altare al Signore, così il flagello sarà allontanato dal popolo".
22 And Areuna said to David: Let my lord the king take, and offer, as it seemeth good to him: thou hast here oxen for a holocaust, and the wain, and the yokes of the oxen for wood.	22 Araunà rispose a Davide: "Il re, mio signore, prenda pure e offra quello che sembra bene ai suoi occhi: ecco i buoi per il sacrificio, le tregge e gli strumenti dei buoi per legna.
23 All these things Areuna as a king gave to the king: and Areuna said to the king: The Lord thy God receive thy vow.	23 O re, Araunà cede tutto quanto al re". Aggiunse Araunà al re: "Che il Signore, tuo Dio, ti sia propizio!".
24 And the king answered him, and said: Nay, but I will buy it of thee at a price, and I will not offer to the Lord my God holocausts free cost. So David bought the floor, and the oxen, for fifty sicles of silver:	24 Il re disse ad Araunà: "No; io voglio comperare tutto questo per il loro prezzo; non voglio offrire al Signore, mio Dio, olocausti che non mi costino nulla". Così Davide comperò l'aia e i buoi per cinquanta sicli d'argento.
25 And David built there an altar to the Lord, and offered holocausts and peace offerings: and the Lord became merciful to the land, and the plague was stayed from Israel.	25 Davide costruì in quel luogo un altare al Signore e offrì olocausti e sacrifici pacifici. Allora il Signore ebbe pietà del paese e il flagello fu stornato da Israele.
