1 And the anger of the Lord was again kindled against Israel, and stirred up David among them, saying: Go, number Israel and Juda.	1 Se encendió otra vez la ira de Yahveh contra los israelitas e incitó a David contra ellos diciendo: «Anda, haz el censo de Israel y de Judá».
2 And the king said to Joab the general of his army: Go through all the tribes of Israel from Dan to Bersabee, and number ye the people that I may know the number of them.	2 El rey dijo a Joab y a los jefes del ejército que estaban con él: «Recorre todas las tribus de Israel desde Dan hasta Berseba y haz el censo para que yo sepa la cifra de la población».
3 And Joab said to the king: The Lord thy God increase thy people, and make them as many more as they are now, and again multiply them a hundredfold in the sight of my lord the king: but what meaneth my lord the king by this kind of thing?	3 Joab respondió al rey: «Que Yahveh tu Dios multiplique el pueblo cien veces más de lo que es y que los ojos de mi señor el rey lo vean. Mas ¿para qué quiere esto mi señor el rey?»
4 But the king's words prevailed over the words of Joab, and of the captains of the army: and Joab, and the captains of the soldiers went out from the presence of the king, to number the people of Israel.	4 Pero prevaleció la orden del rey sobre Joab y los jefes del ejército y salió Joab con los jefes del ejército de la presencia del rey para hacer el censo del pueblo de Israel.
5 And when they had passed the Jordan, they came to Aroer to the right side of the city, which is in the vale of Gad.	5 Pasaron el Jordán y comenzaron por Aroer, la ciudad que está en medio del valle, y por Gad hasta Yazer.
6 And by Jazer they passed into Galaad, and to the lower land of Hodsi, and they came into the woodlands of Dan. And going about by Sidon,	6 Fueron luego a Galaad y al país de los hititas, a Cadés. Llegaron hasta Dan y desde Dan doblaron hacia Sidón.
7 They passed near the walls of Tyre, and all the land of the Hevite, and the Chanaanite, and they came to the south of Juda into Bersabee:	7 Llegaron hasta la fortaleza de Tiro y todas las ciudades de los jivitas y cananeos, saliendo finlamente al Négueb de Judá, a Berseba.
8 And having gone through the whole land, after nine months and twenty days, they came to Jerusalem.	8 Recorrieron así todo el país y al cabo de nueve meses y veinte días volvieron a Jerusalén.
9 And Joab gave up the sum of the number of the people to the king, and there were found of Israel eight hundred thousand valiant men that drew the sword: and of Juda five hundred thousand fighting men.	9 Joab entregó al rey la cifra del censo del pueblo. Había en Israel 800.000 hombres de guerra capaces de manejar las armas; en Judá había 500.000 hombres.
10 But David's heart struck him, after the people were numbered: and David said to the Lord: I have sinned very much in what I have done: but I pray thee, O Lord, to take away the iniquity of thy servant, because I have done exceeding foolishly.	10 Después de haber hecho el censo del pueblo, le remordió a David el corazón y dijo David a Yahveh: «He cometido un gran pecado. Pero ahora, Yahveh, perdona, te ruego, la falta de tu siervo, pues he sido muy necio».
11 And David arose in the morning, and the word of the Lord came to Gad the prophet and the seer of David, saying:	11 Cuando David se levantó por la mañana, le había sido dirigida la palabra de Yahveh al profeta Gad, vidente de David, diciendo:
12 Go, and say to David: Thus saith the Lord: I give thee thy choice of three things, choose one of them which thou wilt, that I may do it to thee.	12 «Anda y di a David: Así dice Yahveh: Tres cosas te propongo; elije una de ellas y la llevaré a cabo».
13 And when Gad was come to David, he told him, saying: Either seven years of famine shall come to thee in thy land: or thou shalt flee three months before thy adversaries, and they shall pursue thee: or for three days there shall be a pestilence in thy land. Now therefore deliberate, and see what answer I shall return to him that sent me.	13 Llegó Gad donde David y le anunció: «¿Qué quieres que te venga, tres años de gran hambre en tu país, tres meses de derrotas ante tus enemigos y que te persigan, o tres días de peste en tu tierra? Ahora piensa y mira qué debo responder al que me envía».
14 And David said to Gad: I am in a great strait: but it is better that I should fall into the hands of the Lord (for his mercies are many) than into the hands of men.	14 David respondió a Gad: «Estoy en grande angustia. Pero caigamos en manos de Yahveh que es grande su misericordia. No caiga yo en manos de los hombres».
15 And the Lord sent a pestilence upon Israel, from the morning unto the time appointed, and there died of the people from Dan to Bersabee seventy thousand men.	15 Y David eligió la peste para sí. Eran los días de la recolección del trigo. Yahveh envió la peste a Israel desde la mañana hasta el tiempo señalado y murieron 70.000 hombres del pueblo, desde Dan hasta Berseba.
16 And when the angel of the Lord had stretched out his hand over Jerusalem to destroy it, the Lord had pity on the affliction, and said to the angel that slew the people: It is enough: now hold thy hand. And the angel of the Lord was by the thrashingfloor of Areuna the Jebusite.	16 El ángel extendió la mano hacia Jerusalén para destruirla, pero Yahveh se arrepintió del estrago y dijo al ángel que exterminaba el pueblo: «¡Basta ya! Retira tu mano». El ángel de Yahveh estaba entonces junto a la era de Arauná el jebuseo.
17 And David said to the Lord, when he saw the angel striking the people: It is I; I am he that have sinned, I have done wickedly: these that are the sheep, what have they done? let thy hand, I beseech thee, be turned against me, and against my father's house.	17 Cuando David vio al ángel que hería al pueblo, dijo a Yahveh: «Yo fui quien pequé, yo cometí el mal, pero estas ovejas ¿qué han hecho? Caiga, te suplico, tu mano sobre mí y sobre la casa de mi padre».
18 And Gad came to David that day, and said: Go up, and build an altar to the Lord in the thrashingfloor of Areuna the Jebusite.	18 Vino Gad aquel día donde David y le dijo: «Sube y levanta un altar a Yahveh en la era de Arauná el jebuseo».
19 And David went up according to the word of Gad which the Lord had commanded him.	19 David subió, según la palabra de Gad, como había ordenado Yahveh.
20 And Areuna looked, and saw the king and his servants coming towards him:	20 Miró Arauná y vio al rey y a sus servidores que venían hacia él. Entonces Arauná salió y se postró rostro en tierra ante el rey.
21 An going out he worshipped the king, bowing with his face to the earth, and said: Wherefore is my lord the king come to his servant? Arid David said to him: To buy the thrashingfloor of thee, and build an altar to the Lord, that the plague, which rageth among the people, may cease.	21 Y dijo Arauná: «¿Cómo mi señor el rey viene a su siervo?» David respondió: «Vengo a comprarte la era para levantar un altar a Yahveh y detener la plaga del pueblo».
22 And Areuna said to David: Let my lord the king take, and offer, as it seemeth good to him: thou hast here oxen for a holocaust, and the wain, and the yokes of the oxen for wood.	22 Arauná dijo a David: «Que el rey mi señor tome y ofrezca lo que bien le parezca. Mira los bueyes para el holocausto, los trillos y los yugos de los bueyes para leña.
23 All these things Areuna as a king gave to the king: and Areuna said to the king: The Lord thy God receive thy vow.	23 El siervo de mi señor el rey da todo esto al rey». Y Arauná dijo al rey: «Que Yahveh tu Dios te sea propicio».
24 And the king answered him, and said: Nay, but I will buy it of thee at a price, and I will not offer to the Lord my God holocausts free cost. So David bought the floor, and the oxen, for fifty sicles of silver:	24 Pero el rey dijo a Arauná: «No; quiero comprártelo por su precio, no quiero ofrecer a Yahveh mi Dios holocaustos de balde». Y David compró la era y los bueyes por cincuenta siclos de plata.
25 And David built there an altar to the Lord, and offered holocausts and peace offerings: and the Lord became merciful to the land, and the plague was stayed from Israel.	25 Levantó allí David un altar a Yahveh y ofreció holocaustos y sacrificios de comunión. Entonces Yahveh atendió a las súplicas en favor de la tierra y la peste se apartó de Israel.
