Jeremías 38

EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Sefatías, hijo de Matán, Guedalías, hijo de Pasjur, Iucal, hijo de Selemías, y Pasjur, hijo de Malquías, oyeron las palabras que Jeremías decía a todo el pueblo:	1 But Shephatiah son of Mattan, Gedaliah son of Pashhur, Jucal son of Shelemiah and Pashhur son ofMalchiah heard the words which Jeremiah was saying to al the people,
2 «Así habla el Señor: El que permanezca en esta ciudad morirá por la espada, el hambre y la peste; el que se rinda a los caldeos vivirá y su vida será para él un botín: sí, él quedará con vida.	2 'Yahweh says this, "Anyone who stays in this city wil die by sword, famine or plague; but anyone wholeaves it and surrenders to the Chaldaeans wil live; he wil escape with his life.
3 Así habla el Señor: Esta ciudad será entregada al ejército del rey de Babilonia, y este la tomará».	3 Yahweh says this: This city will certainly be handed over to the army of the king of Babylon, and he willcapture it." '
4 Los jefes dijeron al rey: «Que este hombre sea condenado a muerte, porque con semejantes discursos desmoraliza a los hombres de guerra que aún quedan en esta ciudad, y a todo el pueblo. No, este hombre no busca el bien del pueblo, sino su desgracia».	4 The chief men then said to the king, 'You must have this man put to death: he is unquestionablydisheartening the remaining soldiers in the city, and al the people too, by talking like this. This man is seekingnot the welfare of the people but their ruin.'
5 El rey Sedecías respondió: «Ahí lo tienen en sus manos, porque el rey ya no puede nada contra ustedes».	5 King Zedekiah answered, 'He is in your hands as you know, for the king is powerless to oppose you.'
6 Entonces ellos tomaron a Jeremías y lo arrojaron al aljibe de Malquías, hijo del rey, que estaba en el patio de la guardia, descolgándolo con cuerdas. En el aljibe no había agua sino sólo barro, y Jeremías se hundió en el barro.	6 So they took Jeremiah and put him into the storage-wel of the king's son Malchiah in the Court of theGuard, letting him down with ropes. There was no water in the storage-well, only mud, and into the mudJeremiah sank.
7 Ebed Mélec, el cusita, un eunuco de la casa del rey, se enteró de que habían puesto a Jeremías en el aljibe. Mientras el rey estaba sentado a la puerta de Benjamín,	7 But Ebed-Melech the Cushite, a eunuch attached to the palace, heard that Jeremiah had been put intothe storage-wel . As the king was sitting in the Benjamin Gate,
8 Ebed Mélec salió de la casa del rey y le dijo:	8 Ebed-Melech came out from the palace and spoke to the king.
9 «Rey, mi señor, esos hombres han obrado mal tratando así a Jeremías; lo han arrojado al aljibe, y allí abajo morirá de hambre, porque ya no hay pan en la ciudad».	9 'My lord king,' he said, 'these men have done a wicked thing by treating the prophet Jeremiah like this:they have thrown him into the storage-well. He will starve to death there, since there is no more food in the city.'
10 El rey dio esta orden a Ebed Mélec, el cusita: «Toma de aquí a tres hombres contigo, y saca del aljibe a Jeremías, el profeta, antes de que muera».	10 At this the king gave Ebed-Melech the Cushite the fol owing order: 'Take thirty men with you from hereand pul the prophet Jeremiah out of the storage-wel before he dies.'
11 Ebed Mélec tomó consigo a tres hombres y entró en la casa del rey, en el vestuario; tomó de allí unos trapos y unos vestidos viejos, y se los hizo llegar a Jeremías con unas cuerdas, dentro del aljibe.	11 Ebed-Melech took the men with him and went into the palace to the Treasury wardrobe; out of it hetook some torn, worn-out rags which he lowered on ropes to Jeremiah in the storage-wel .
12 Ebed Mélec, el cusita, dijo a Jeremías: «Colócate estos trapos y estos vestidos viejos entre las axilas y las cuerdas». Jeremías lo hizo así.	12 Ebed-Melech the Cushite then said to Jeremiah, 'These torn, worn-out rags are for you to put underyour armpits to pad the ropes.' Jeremiah did this.
13 Ellos tiraron a Jeremías con las cuerdas y lo sacaron del aljibe. Y Jeremías permaneció en el patio de la guardia.	13 Then they hauled Jeremiah up with the ropes and pulled him out of the storage-wel . And Jeremiahstayed in the Court of the Guard.
14 El rey Sedecías mandó que le trajeran a Jeremías, el profeta, a la tercera entrada de la Casa del Señor. El rey dijo a Jeremías: «Tengo que preguntarte una cosa; no me ocultes nada».	14 King Zedekiah had the prophet Jeremiah summoned to him at the third entrance to the Temple ofYahweh. 'I want to ask you for a word,' the king said to Jeremiah, 'keep nothing back from me.'
15 Jeremías respondió a Sedecías: «Si te la digo, seguro que me harás morir; y si te doy un consejo, no me escucharás».	15 Jeremiah answered Zedekiah, 'If I do proclaim it to you, are you not sure to have me put to death?And if I give you advice, you wil not listen to me.'
16 Pero el rey Sedecías hizo este juramento a Jeremías, en secreto: «¡Por la vida del Señor que nos ha dado la vida, no te haré morir ni te pondré en manos de los hombres que atentan contra tu vida!».	16 King Zedekiah then secretly swore this oath to Jeremiah, 'As Yahweh lives, giver of this life of ours, Iwil have you neither put to death nor handed over to these men who are determined to kill you.'
17 Jeremías dijo a Sedecías: «Así habla el Señor, Dios de los ejércitos, el Dios de Israel: Si te rindes a los jefes del rey de Babilonia, tu vida estará a salvo, y esta ciudad no será incendiada: vivirás tú, y también tu familia.	17 Jeremiah then said to Zedekiah, 'Yahweh, God Sabaoth, God of Israel, says this, "If you go out andsurrender to the king of Babylon's generals, your life will be safe and this city will not be burnt down; you andyour family wil survive.
18 Pero si no te rindes a los jefes del rey de Babilonia, esta ciudad será entregada en manos de los caldeos e incendiada, y tú no escaparás de sus manos».	18 But if you do not go out and surrender to the king of Babylon's generals, this city wil be handed overto the Chaldaeans and they wil burn it down; nor wil you yourself escape their clutches." '
19 El rey Sedecías dijo a Jeremías: «Estoy preocupado por los judíos que se pasaron al enemigo; temo que los caldeos me entreguen en sus manos, y ellos me traten desconsideradamente».	19 King Zedekiah then said to Jeremiah, 'I am afraid of the Judaeans who have already gone over to theChaldaeans: I might be handed over to them and they would il -treat me.'
20 Jeremías respondió: «No te entregarán. Escucha entonces la voz del Señor en esto que yo te digo; así te irá bien y estará a salvo tu vida.	20 'You wil not be handed over to them,' Jeremiah replied. 'Please listen to Yahweh's voice as I haverelayed it to you, and then al wil go wel with you and your life wil be safe.
21 Pero si te niegas a rendirte, esto es lo que el Señor me hizo ver:	21 But if you refuse to surrender, this is what Yahweh has shown me:
22 todas las mujeres que aún quedan en la casa del rey de Judá serán llevadas a los jefes de los caldeos, y ellas dirán: ¡Te han seducido y han podido contra ti tus amigos más íntimos! Apenas tus pies se hundieron en el fango, ellos se echaron por atrás.	22 the sight of al the women left in the king of Judah's palace being led off to the king of Babylon'sgenerals and saying: "They have misled you, they have triumphed over you, those friends of yours! Your feethave sunk in the mud! They are up and away!"
23 A todas tus mujeres y a tus hijos se los llevarán a los caldeos; y tú mismo no escaparás de sus manos, sino que caerás en manos del rey de Babilonia. En cuanto a esta ciudad, será consumida por el fuego».	23 'Yes, al your wives and children wil be led off to the Chaldaeans, and you yourself wil not escapetheir clutches but wil be a prisoner in the clutches of the king of Babylon. And as for this city, it wil be burntdown.'
24 Sedecías dijo a Jeremías: «Que nadie se entere de estas palabras, y tú no morirás.	24 Zedekiah then said to Jeremiah, 'Do not let anyone else hear these words or you wil die.
25 Si los jefes se enteran de que yo hablé contigo, y vienen a decirte: «Infórmanos sobre lo que has dicho al rey y sobre lo que él te dijo; no nos ocultes nada y no te haremos morir»,	25 If the chief men hear that I have been talking to you, and come and say, "Tel us what you said to theking and what the king said to you; keep nothing back from us, or we shal put you to death,"
26 tú les dirás: «He pedido encarecidamente al rey que no me haga volver a la casa de Jonatán, a morir allí».	26 you must reply, "I presented this request to the king: that he would not have me sent back toJonathan's house to die." '
27 Todos los jefes, en efecto, fueron a ver a Jeremías y lo interrogaron. Pero él les informó ateniéndose a lo que le había ordenado el rey, y ellos lo dejaron tranquilo, porque nadie había oído la conversación.	27 And in fact al the chief men came to Jeremiah and questioned him. He told them exactly what theking had ordered him to say. They then left him in peace, since the conversation had not been overheard.
28 Jeremías permaneció en el patio de la guardia hasta el día en que Jerusalén fue tomada. Y él estaba allí cuando Jerusalén fue tomada.	28 And Jeremiah stayed in the Court of the Guard until the day Jerusalem was captured. And he wasthere when Jerusalem actual y was captured.
