1 Les Israélites avaient fait ce serment à Mispa: “Personne d’entre nous ne donnera sa fille comme femme à quelqu’un de Benjamin.”	1 Now the men of Israel had sworn at Mizpah that none of them would give his daughter in marriage to anyone from Benjamin.
2 Ils se réunirent à Béthel et restèrent devant Dieu jusqu’au soir avec des cris et de grandes lamentations. Ils disaient:	2 So the people went to Bethel and remained there before God until evening, raising their voices in bitter lament.
3 “Yahvé, notre Dieu, qu’est-il donc arrivé en Israël! Une tribu est manquante aujourd’hui!	3 They said, "LORD, God of Israel, why has it come to pass in Israel that today one tribe of Israel should be lacking?"
4 Le lendemain le peuple se leva de bon matin; ils construisirent un autel et offrirent des holocaustes et des sacrifices de communion.”	4 Early the next day the people built an altar there and offered holocausts and peace offerings.
5 Puis les Israélites dirent: “Parmi toutes les tribus d’Israël, y en a-t-il une qui ne soit pas venue à l’assemblée devant Yahvé?” Car on avait fait un serment solennel: Si quelqu’un ne monte pas à Mispa devant Yahvé, il sera mis à mort.	5 Then the Israelites asked, "Are there any among all the tribes of Israel who did not come up to the LORD for the assembly?" For they had taken a solemn oath that anyone who did not go up to the LORD at Mizpah should be put to death without fail.
6 Les Israélites étaient fort affligés pour Benjamin leur frère, ils se disaient: “Aujourd’hui une tribu a été retranchée d’Israël.	6 The Israelites were disconsolate over their brother Benjamin and said, "Today one of the tribes of Israel has been cut off.
7 Que pouvons-nous faire pour que ceux d’entre eux qui restent aient des femmes, puisque nous avons juré devant Yahvé de ne pas leur donner nos filles en mariage?”	7 What can we do about wives for the survivors, since we have sworn by the LORD not to give them any of our daughters in marriage?"
8 C’est alors qu’ils demandèrent: “Y en a-t-il une parmi toutes les tribus d’Israël, qui ne soit pas montée vers Yahvé à Mispa?” Ils virent que personne de Yabech en Galaad n’était venu à l’assemblée.	8 And when they asked whether anyone among the tribes of Israel had not come up to the LORD in Mizpah, they found that none of the men of Jabesh-gilead had come to the encampment for the assembly.
9 En effet, on avait recensé toute la population et il n’y avait là personne de Yabech en Galaad.	9 A roll call of the army established that none of the inhabitants of that city were present.
10 La communauté envoya là-bas 12 000 hommes, tous des gens solides, avec cet ordre: “Allez! Vous passerez au fil de l’épée les habitants de Yabech en Galaad ainsi que les femmes et les petits enfants:	10 The community, therefore, sent twelve thousand warriors with orders to go to Jabesh-gilead and put those who lived there to the sword, including the women and children.
11 tout mâle et toute femme qui a eu des relations avec un homme sera voué à l’anathème, mais vous laisserez en vie celles qui sont vierges.” Ils firent ainsi.	11 They were told to include under the ban all males and every woman who was not still a virgin.
12 Ils trouvèrent dans la population de Yabech en Galaad 400 filles qui n’avaient pas eu de relations avec un homme, et ils les ramenèrent au camp établi à Silo, au pays de Canaan.	12 Finding among the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead four hundred young virgins, who had had no relations with men, they brought them to the camp at Shiloh in the land of Canaan.
13 Alors la communauté envoya prévenir les gens de Benjamin qui étaient au Rocher-de-Rimon et l’on fit la paix.	13 Then the whole community sent a message to the Benjaminites at the rock Rimmon, offering them peace.
14 Les Benjaminites revinrent donc et on leur donna les femmes de Yabech de Galaad qu’on avait laissées en vie. Mais il n’y en avait pas assez pour eux.	14 When Benjamin returned at that time, they gave them as wives the women of Jabesh-gilead whom they had spared; but these proved to be not enough for them.
15 De nouveau le peuple fut pris de pitié pour Benjamin, car Yahvé avait fait une brèche parmi les tribus d’Israël.	15 The people were still disconsolate over Benjamin because the LORD had made a breach among the tribes of Israel.
16 Les anciens de la communauté dirent: “Que pouvons-nous faire pour ceux qui restent, pour qu’ils aient des femmes, puisque les femmes de Benjamin ont été massacrées?”	16 And the elders of the community said, "What shall we do for wives for the survivors? For every woman in Benjamin has been put to death."
17 Ils décidèrent ceci: “Les survivants garderont toute la terre qui appartient à Benjamin, de façon qu’aucune tribu ne soit retranchée d’Israël.	17 They said, "Those of Benjamin who survive must have heirs, else one of the Israelite tribes will be wiped out.
18 Cependant nous ne pouvons pas leur donner nos filles en mariage, puisque les Israélites ont fait ce serment: ‘Maudit soit celui qui donnera sa fille à Benjamin.’ ”	18 Yet we cannot give them any of our daughters in marriage, because the Israelites have sworn, 'Cursed be he who gives a woman to Benjamin!'"
19 Alors ils pensèrent: “C’est bientôt la fête de Yahvé, celle qui a lieu chaque année à Silo. (Silo est au nord de Béthel, à l’est de la route qui va de Béthel à Sichem et au sud de Lébona)”	19 Then they thought of the yearly feast of the LORD at Shiloh, north of Bethel, east of the highway that goes up from Bethel to Shechem, and south of Lebonah.
20 Et ils firent cette proposition aux Benjaminites: “Allez vous cacher dans les vignes.	20 And they instructed the Benjaminites, "Go and lie in wait in the vineyards.
21 Lorsque vous verrez les filles de Silo sortir pour danser en chœurs, vous sortirez des vignes, vous enlèverez chacun une des filles de Silo et vous regagnerez le pays de Benjamin.	21 When you see the girls of Shiloh come out to do their dancing, leave the vineyards and each of you seize one of the girls of Shiloh for a wife, and go to the land of Benjamin.
22 Si jamais leurs pères ou leurs frères viennent se plaindre à nous, nous leur dirons: “Laissez-les donc tranquilles, vous voyez bien que nous n’avons pu prendre une femme pour chacun d’eux au cours de la guerre. Ce n’est pas vous qui les leur avez données, donc vous n’avez pas été infidèles à votre serment.”	22 When their fathers or their brothers come to complain to us, we shall say to them, 'Release them to us as a kindness, since we did not take a woman apiece in the war. Had you yourselves given them these wives, you would now be guilty.'"
23 Les Benjaminites firent comme on leur disait pour prendre le nombre de femmes qui correspondait au leur. Ils les enlevèrent parmi celles qui étaient venues danser. Puis ils repartirent et retournèrent sur leurs terres. Là ils rebâtirent les villes et s’y installèrent.	23 The Benjaminites did this; they carried off a wife for each of them from their raid on the dancers, and went back to their own territory, where they rebuilt and occupied the cities.
24 À ce moment-là les Israélites quittèrent les lieux et s’en allèrent, chacun dans sa tribu et son propre clan, sur leurs propres terres.	24 Also at that time the Israelites dispersed; each of them left for his own heritage in his own clan and tribe.
25 En ce temps-là il n’y avait pas de roi en Israël et chacun faisait ce qui lui plaisait.	25 In those days there was no king in Israel; everyone did what he thought best.
