1 L’ange de Yahvé monta de Guilgal vers Bokim: “Je vous ai fait monter d’Égypte, dit-il, et je vous ai conduits dans ce pays que j’ai promis par serment à vos pères. J’avais dit: Je ne romprai jamais mon Alliance avec vous,	1 And an Angel of the Lord went up from Gilgal to the Place of Weeping, and he said: “I led you away from Egypt, and I led you into the land, about which I swore to your fathers. And I promised that I would not nullify my covenant with you, even forever:
2 et de votre côté vous ne ferez pas d’alliance avec les habitants de ce pays: vous renverserez leurs autels. Mais vous ne m’avez pas écouté. Qu’avez-vous fait là?	2 but only if you would not form a pact with the inhabitants of this land. Instead, you should overturn their altars. Yet you were not willing to listen to my voice. Why have you done this?
3 Voici donc ce que j’ai décidé: Je ne les chasserai pas de devant vous! Ils seront sans cesse à vos côtés et leurs dieux deviendront un piège pour vous.”	3 For this reason, I am not willing to destroy them before your face, so that you may have enemies, and so that their gods may be your ruin.”
4 Lorsque l’ange de Yahvé parla ainsi à tout Israël, le peuple poussa des cris et se mit à pleurer.	4 And when the Angel of the Lord spoke these words to all the sons of Israel, they lifted up their voice, and they wept.
5 C’est pourquoi ils appelèrent cet endroit Bokim et ils y offrirent des sacrifices à Yahvé.	5 And the name of that place was called, the Place of Weeping, or the Place of Tears. And they immolated victims to the Lord in that place.
6 Quand Josué avait congédié le peuple, les Israélites étaient retournés chacun à sa part d’héritage, cherchant à occuper le pays.	6 Then Joshua dismissed the people, and the sons of Israel went away, each one to his own possession, so that they might obtain it.
7 Le peuple servit Yahvé durant toute la vie de Josué et durant toute la vie des anciens qui lui succédèrent. Ils avaient vu en effet les prodiges accomplis par Yahvé en faveur d’Israël.	7 And they served the Lord, during all his days, and during all the days of the elders, who lived for a long time after him, and who knew all the works of the Lord, which he had done for Israel.
8 Josué, fils de Noun, serviteur de Yahvé, mourut alors: il avait 110 ans.	8 Then Joshua, the son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died, being one hundred and ten years old.
9 On l’enterra dans le territoire qu’il avait reçu en héritage à Timnat-Héres, dans la montagne d’Éphraïm, au nord du mont Gaach.	9 And they buried him in the parts of his possession at Timnath-Serah, on Mount Ephraim, before the northern side of Mount Gaash.
10 Lorsque cette génération fut à son tour réunie à ses pères, une autre génération lui succéda qui ne connaissait ni Yahvé, ni ce qu’il avait fait pour Israël.	10 And that entire generation was gathered to their fathers. And there rose up others, who had not known the Lord and the works that he had done for Israel.
11 Les Israélites firent donc ce qui est mal au regard de Yahvé, ils servirent les Baals.	11 And the sons of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord, and they served the Baals.
12 Ils abandonnèrent Yahvé, le Dieu de leurs pères qui les avait fait sortir du pays d’Égypte, et ils suivirent d’autres dieux. Ils se prosternèrent devant les dieux des peuples qui les entouraient, et ils attirèrent sur eux la colère de Yahvé.	12 And they abandoned the Lord, the God of their fathers, who had led them away from the land of Egypt. And they followed foreign gods and the gods of the peoples who were living around them, and they adored them. And they provoked the Lord to wrath,
13 Dès qu’ils abandonnèrent Yahvé pour servir le Baal et les Astartés,	13 forsaking him, and serving Baal and Ashtaroth.
14 la colère de Yahvé s’enflamma contre Israël. Il les livra aux mains de pillards qui les dépouillèrent, il les vendit à leurs ennemis tout à l’entour: maintenant ils ne résistaient plus à leurs ennemis.	14 And the Lord, having become angry against Israel, delivered them into the hands of plunderers, who seized them and sold them to the enemies that were living on all sides. Neither were they able to withstand their adversaries.
15 Chaque fois qu’ils partaient en guerre, la Main de Yahvé se dressait contre eux pour leur malheur comme Yahvé le leur avait dit, comme Yahvé le leur avait juré: ils étaient dans une très grande détresse.	15 Instead, wherever they wanted to go, the hand of the Lord was upon them, just as he said and just as he swore to them. And they were greatly afflicted.
16 Alors Yahvé leur donna des juges qui les sauvèrent de la main de ceux qui les dépouillaient.	16 And the Lord raised up judges, who would free them from the hands of their oppressors. But they were not willing to listen to them.
17 Mais ils n’écoutèrent pas davantage leurs juges et ils se prostituèrent à la suite d’autres dieux; ils se prosternèrent devant eux. Ils se détournèrent bien vite de la voie sur laquelle leurs pères avaient marché quand ils écoutaient les commandements de Yahvé. Eux faisaient tout le contraire.	17 Fornicating with foreign gods and adoring them, they quickly deserted the way along which their fathers had advanced. And having heard the commandments of the Lord, they did all things to the contrary.
18 Lorsque Yahvé leur envoyait des juges, Yahvé était avec le juge et, durant toute la vie du juge, il les délivrait de la main de leurs ennemis. En effet, Yahvé avait pitié d’eux quand il entendait leurs cris sous l’oppression et la persécution.	18 And while the Lord was raising up the judges, in their days, he was moved to mercy, and he listened to the groaning of the afflicted, and he freed them from the slaughter of their oppressors.
19 Mais dès que le juge était mort, ils recommençaient à faire le mal, pire que leurs pères. Ils se mettaient à la traîne d’autres dieux, ils les servaient et se prosternaient devant eux. Ils ne voulaient pas renoncer à leurs mauvaises actions; ils s’entêtaient dans cette voie.	19 But after a judge had died, they turned back, and they were doing much worse things than their fathers had done, following strange gods, serving them, and adoring them. They did not abandon their pursuits and their very stubborn way, by which they were accustomed to walk.
20 La colère de Yahvé s’enflamma donc contre Israël; il déclara: “Puisque cette nation a violé mon Alliance que j’avais donnée à leurs pères et qu’ils ne m’écoutent pas,	20 And the fury of the Lord was enraged against Israel, and he said: “For this people has made void my covenant, which I had formed with their fathers, and they have despised listening to my voice.
21 moi non plus, je ne chasserai plus devant eux la moindre des peuplades que Josué a laissées à sa mort.	21 And so, I will not destroy the nations that Joshua left behind when he died,
22 Elles me serviront pour mettre Israël à l’épreuve: peut-être voudront-ils suivre les chemins de Yahvé comme leurs pères ont fait.”	22 so that, by them, I may test Israel, as to whether or not they will keep the way of the Lord, and walk in it, just as their fathers kept it.”
23 Yahvé laissa donc tranquilles ces nations qu’il n’avait pas livrées aux mains de Josué et il ne se pressa pas de les chasser.	23 Therefore, the Lord left all these nations, and he was not willing to quickly overthrow them, nor did he deliver them into the hands of Joshua.
