1 Si tu trouves le bœuf ou la brebis de ton frère qui se sont égarés, tu ne passeras pas à côté indifférent: tu les ramèneras à ton frère.	1 'If you see your brother's ox or one of his sheep straying, you must not disregard it: you must take itback to your brother.
2 Si ce frère n’habite pas à côté de chez toi ou si tu ne le connais pas, tu recueilleras l’animal dans ta maison, et il restera chez toi jusqu’à ce que ton frère vienne le rechercher. Alors tu le lui rendras.	2 And if he is not close at hand or you do not know who he is, you must take it home with you and keepit by you until your brother comes to look for it; you wil then return it to him.
3 Tu feras de même pour son âne, pour son manteau, pour tout objet égaré que ton frère a perdu et que tu as trouvé. Tu ne feras pas l’ignorant.	3 'You must do the same with his donkey, the same with his cloak, the same with anything that yourbrother loses and that you find; you must not disregard it.
4 Si tu vois l’âne de ton frère, ou son bœuf, tombé sur le chemin, tu ne passeras pas à côté, mais tu l’aideras à se relever.	4 'If you see your brother's donkey or ox fal over on the road, you must not disregard it, but must helpyour brother get it on its feet again.
5 La femme ne portera pas un costume d’homme et l’homme ne mettra pas un vêtement de femme, car Yahvé ton Dieu a en horreur celui qui fait cela.	5 'A woman must not dress like a man, nor a man like a woman; anyone who does this is detestable toYahweh your God.
6 Si tu rencontres sur ton chemin, sur un arbre ou à terre, un nid d’oiseaux avec des petits ou des œufs, et que la mère soit couchée sur les petits ou sur les œufs, tu ne prendras pas la mère et ses petits.	6 'If, when out walking, you come across a bird's nest, in a tree or on the ground, with chicks or eggsand the mother bird sitting on the chicks or the eggs, you must not take the mother as wel as the chicks.
7 Tu laisseras aller la mère, et tu ne prendras pour toi que les petits: ainsi tout ira bien pour toi et tu vivras de longs jours.	7 Let the mother go; the young you may take for yourself. Thus wil you have prosperity and long life.
8 Lorsque tu construiras une nouvelle maison, tu mettras une barrière tout autour du toit, car tu serais responsable si quelqu’un tombait de là-haut.	8 'When you build a new house, you must give your roof a parapet; then your house will not incur blood-vengeance, should anyone fal off the top.
9 Tu ne sèmeras pas dans ta vigne une autre culture, sinon le tout serait consacré: la semence que tu as semée, et le fruit de ta vigne.	9 'You must not sow any other crop in your vineyard, or the whole yield may become forfeit, both thecrop you have sown and the yield of your vines.
10 Tu n’attelleras pas ensemble pour labourer, un bœuf et un âne.	10 'You must not plough with ox and donkey together.
11 Tu ne t’habilleras pas avec un tissu fait de laine et de lin.	11 'You must not wear clothing woven part of wool, part of linen.
12 Tu feras des cordons aux quatre coins du voile que tu portes.	12 'You must make tassels for the four corners of the cloak in which you wrap yourself.
13 Voici un homme qui a épousé une femme. Il a eu des relations avec elle, mais par la suite il la déteste.	13 'If a man marries a woman, has sexual intercourse with her and then, turning against her,
14 Il lui reproche de vilaines choses et il porte atteinte à sa réputation. Il dit: “J’ai pris cette femme, je me suis approché d’elle, mais je n’ai pas trouvé les signes de sa virginité.”	14 taxes her with misconduct and publicly defames her by saying, "I married this woman and when Ihad sexual intercourse with her I did not find evidence of her virginity,"
15 Dans ce cas, le père et la mère de la jeune fille prendront le linge avec les signes de la virginité de la jeune fille et l’apporteront aux anciens à la porte de la ville.	15 the girl's father and mother must take the evidence of her virginity and produce it before the elders ofthe town, at the gate.
16 Le père de la jeune fille dira alors aux anciens: “J’ai donné ma fille comme épouse à cet homme, et maintenant il la déteste.	16 To the elders, the girl's father wil say, "I gave this man my daughter for a wife and he has turnedagainst her,
17 Il lui fait une réputation de mauvaise conduite et il dit: Je n’ai pas trouvé chez ta fille les signes de sa virginité. Or voici les signes de la virginité de ma fille.” Sur ce il étendra le linge devant les anciens de la ville.	17 and now he taxes her with misconduct, saying, I have found no evidence of virginity in your daughter.Here is the evidence of my daughter's virginity!"
18 Les anciens de la ville prendront l’homme et le corrigeront.	18 They must then display the cloth to the elders of the town.
19 Ensuite ils le condamneront à une amende de 100 pièces d’argent pour avoir sali la réputation d’une vierge d’Israël, et ils les donneront au père de la jeune fille. Elle restera sa femme, et de toute sa vie il ne pourra la répudier.	19 The elders of the town in question wil have the man arrested and flogged, and fine him a hundredsilver shekels for publicly defaming a virgin of Israel, and give this money to the girl's father. She wil remain his wife; as long as he lives, he may not divorce her.
20 Mais si la chose est vraie, si l’on n’a pas trouvé chez la jeune fille les signes de sa virginité;	20 'But if the accusation that the girl cannot show evidence of virginity is substantiated,
21 on fera sortir la jeune fille à l’entrée de la maison de son père, et les gens de la ville la lapideront. Elle mourra parce qu’elle a fait une chose honteuse en Israël, en se prostituant dans la maison de son père. C’est ainsi que tu ôteras le mal du milieu de toi.	21 she must be taken out, and at the door of her father's house her fellow-citizens must stone her todeath for having committed an infamy in Israel by bringing disgrace on her father's family. You must banish thisevil from among you.
22 Si l’on trouve un homme couché avec une femme mariée, ils mourront tous les deux: aussi bien la femme que l’homme qui a couché avec elle. C’est ainsi que tu ôteras le mal d’Israël.	22 'If a man is caught having sexual intercourse with another man's wife, both must be put to death: theman who has slept with her and the woman herself. You must banish this evil from Israel.
23 Si un homme rencontre en ville une jeune fille qui est fiancée à un autre, et couche avec elle,	23 'If a virgin is engaged to a man, and another man encounters her in the town and has sexualintercourse with her,
24 vous les ferez sortir tous les deux à la porte de cette ville, et vous les lapiderez. La jeune fille mourra, car c’était en ville et elle n’a pas crié; et l’homme mourra car il a violé la femme de son prochain. Ainsi tu ôteras le mal du milieu de toi.	24 you will take them both to the gate of the town in question and stone them to death: the girl, for nothaving cal ed for help in the town; the man, for having exploited his fel ow-citizen's wife. You must banish thisevil from among you.
25 Mais si l’homme a rencontré la jeune fiancée dans la campagne, et que là il l’a violentée, seul l’homme qui a couché avec elle mourra.	25 But if the man ran into the betrothed girl in the open country and slept with her, having taken her byforce, her ravisher alone must die;
26 Tu ne toucheras pas à la jeune fille, car elle n’a pas commis de faute (elle était dans la même situation qu’une personne qui est attaquée et tuée).	26 you must do nothing to the girl, she has not committed a capital offence. The case is like that of aman who attacks and kil s his fel ow:
27 L’autre l’a rencontrée dans la campagne et la jeune fille fiancée a eu beau crier, personne n’a pu lui venir en aide.	27 since he came across her in the open country, the betrothed girl may have cal ed out, withoutanyone's coming to her rescue.
28 Un autre cas. Un homme rencontre une jeune fille vierge qui n’est pas encore fiancée, il la violente et couche avec elle, et on les surprend.	28 'If a man meets a young virgin who is not betrothed and seizes her, sleeps with her and is caught inthe act,
29 L’homme qui a couché avec la jeune fille donnera au père de celle-ci 50 pièces d’argent, et elle deviendra sa femme. Il ne pourra pas la répudier de toute sa vie, puisqu’il l’a violée.	29 her ravisher must give the girl's father fifty silver shekels; since he has exploited her, she must be hiswife and, as long as he lives, he may not divorce her.'
