1 Les Israélites qui habitaient en Judée apprirent tout ce qu’Holoferne, le général en chef de Nabukodonozor, roi des Assyriens, avait fait aux nations païennes, comment il avait dépouillé tous leurs temples et les avait laissés en ruines.	1 Now the children of Israel, that dwelt in Judea, heard all that Holofernes the chief captain of Nabuchodonosor king of the Assyrians had done to the nations, and after what manner he had spoiled all their temples, and brought them to nought.
2 À son approche, ils furent remplis d’une peur effroyable, avec une grande inquiétude pour Jérusalem et pour le Temple du Seigneur leur Dieu.	2 Therefore they were exceedingly afraid of him, and were troubled for Jerusalem, and for the temple of the Lord their God:
3 En effet, ils rentraient à peine de la captivité, et depuis peu de temps seulement le peuple de Judée s’était rassemblé pour consacrer le mobilier, l’autel et le Temple, après leur profanation.	3 For they were newly returned from the captivity, and all the people of Judea were lately gathered together: and the vessels, and the altar, and the house, were sanctified after the profanation.
4 Ils sonnèrent donc l’alerte dans toute la Samarie, à Kona, à Beth-Oron, à Belmaïn, à Jéricho, à Choba, à Ésora et dans la vallée de Salem.	4 Therefore they sent into all the coasts of Samaria, and the villages and to Bethoron, and Belmen, and Jericho, and to Choba, and Esora, and to the valley of Salem:
5 On occupa les sommets des plus hautes montagnes et l’on fortifia les villages qui s’y trouvaient. Comme les champs venaient d’être moissonnés, on prépara des réserves de nourriture en vue de la guerre.	5 And possessed themselves beforehand of all the tops of the high mountains, and fortified the villages that were in them, and laid up victuals for the provision of war: for their fields were of late reaped.
6 Le grand prêtre Yoakim, qui était alors en place à Jérusalem, envoya des lettres aux habitants de Béthulie et Bétomestaïm, car ils faisaient face à la plaine d’Esdrelon et la vallée de Dotaïn.	6 Also Joacim the high priest, which was in those days in Jerusalem, wrote to them that dwelt in Bethulia, and Betomestham, which is over against Esdraelon toward the open country, near to Dothaim,
7 Il leur demandait d’occuper les défilés de la montagne qui étaient le seul chemin d’accès vers la Judée: il leur serait facile, disait-il, d’arrêter les ennemis, car les défilés étaient étroits et l’on ne pouvait passer que deux à la fois.	7 Charging them to keep the passages of the hill country: for by them there was an entrance into Judea, and it was easy to stop them that would come up, because the passage was straight, for two men at the most.
8 Les Israélites exécutèrent les ordres du grand prêtre Yoakim et du conseil des anciens du peuple d’Israël qui siégeait à Jérusalem.	8 And the children of Israel did as Joacim the high priest had commanded them, with the ancients of all the people of Israel, which dwelt at Jerusalem.
9 De toutes leurs forces, tous les hommes d’Israël crièrent vers Dieu et s’humilièrent devant lui.	9 Then every man of Israel cried to God with great fervency, and with great vehemency did they humble their souls:
10 Eux, leurs femmes, leurs enfants, leurs troupeaux, tous ceux qui vivaient avec eux, serviteurs ou esclaves, s’habillèrent de sacs.	10 Both they, and their wives and their children, and their cattle, and every stranger and hireling, and their servants bought with money, put sackcloth upon their loins.
11 Tous les Israélites de Jérusalem, avec leurs femmes et leurs enfants, se prosternèrent devant le Temple, la tête couverte de cendre; ils tendirent les mains vers le Seigneur.	11 Thus every man and women, and the little children, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, fell before the temple, and cast ashes upon their heads, and spread out their sackcloth before the face of the Lord: also they put sackcloth about the altar,
12 L’autel lui-même fut recouvert d’un sac. Avec de grands cris, ils suppliaient d’un seul cœur le Dieu d’Israël de ne pas livrer leurs enfants à l’esclavage, leurs femmes au viol, leurs villes à la destruction, le Temple à la profanation et à la moquerie insolente des païens.	12 And cried to the God of Israel all with one consent earnestly, that he would not give their children for a prey, and their wives for a spoil, and the cities of their inheritance to destruction, and the sanctuary to profanation and reproach, and for the nations to rejoice at.
13 Attentif à leur détresse, le Seigneur écouta leur appel. Dans toute la Judée et à Jérusalem, devant le Temple du Seigneur tout-puissant, le peuple jeûnait à longueur de journée.	13 So God heard their prayers, and looked upon their afflictions: for the people fasted many days in all Judea and Jerusalem before the sanctuary of the Lord Almighty.
14 Le grand prêtre Yoakim avec tous les prêtres et serviteurs du Seigneur qui se tenaient devant le Seigneur, habillés de sacs, offraient l’holocauste perpétuel, les offrandes et les dons volontaires du peuple;	14 And Joacim the high priest, and all the priests that stood before the Lord, and they which ministered unto the Lord, had their loins girt with sackcloth, and offered the daily burnt offerings, with the vows and free gifts of the people,
15 et le turban couvert de cendre, de toutes leurs forces ils suppliaient le Seigneur de venir au secours de la maison d’Israël.	15 And had ashes on their mitres, and cried unto the Lord with all their power, that he would look upon all the house of Israel graciously.
