1 Pendant la dix-huitième année du règne de Josaphat, roi de Juda, Joram fils d’Akab devint roi d’Israël à Samarie. Il régna 12 ans;	1 Joram, son of Ahab, became king of Israel in Samaria (in the eighteenth year of Jehoshaphat, king of Judah, and he reigned for twelve years).
2 il fit ce qui déplaît à Yahvé, mais pas autant que son père et sa mère, car il fit disparaître la pierre que son père avait dressée en l’honneur de Baal.	2 He did evil in the LORD'S sight, though not as much as his father and mother. He did away with the pillar of Baal, which his father had made,
3 Cependant il resta attaché au péché de Jéroboam fils de Nabat, lequel avait entraîné Israël dans son péché: il ne s’en détourna pas.	3 but he still clung to the sin to which Jeroboam, son of Nebat, had lured Israel; this he did not give up.
4 Mécha, roi de Moab, était un éleveur de troupeaux. Il livrait au roi d’Israël un tribut de 100 000 agneaux et 100 000 béliers avec leur laine.	4 Now Mesha, king of Moab, who raised sheep, used to pay the king of Israel as tribute a hundred thousand lambs and the wool of a hundred thousand rams.
5 Mais à la mort d’Akab, le roi de Moab se révolta contre le roi d’Israël.	5 But when Ahab died, the king of Moab had rebelled against the king of Israel.
6 Alors le roi Joram sortit de Samarie et passa Israël en revue;	6 Joram as king mustered all Israel, and when he set out on a campaign from Samaria,
7 il se mit en marche et envoya dire à Josaphat, roi de Juda: “Le roi de Moab s’est révolté contre moi, viendras-tu attaquer Moab avec moi?” Josaphat répondit: “J’irai: il en sera de moi comme de toi, de mon peuple comme de ton peuple, et de mes chevaux comme de tes chevaux.”	7 he sent the king of Judah the message: "The king of Moab is in rebellion against me. Will you join me in battle against Moab?" "I will," he replied. "You and I shall be as one, your people and mine, and your horses and mine as well."
8 Il ajouta: “Par quel chemin iras-tu?” Joram répondit: “Par la route du désert d’Édom.”	8 They discussed the route for their attack, and settled upon the route through the desert of Edom.
9 Le roi d’Israël, le roi de Juda et le roi d’Édom se mirent en route, mais après 7 jours de marche il n’y avait plus d’eau pour l’armée ni pour les bêtes.	9 So the king of Israel set out, accompanied by the king of Judah and the king of Edom. After their roundabout journey of seven days the water gave out for the army and for the animals with them.
10 Alors le roi d’Israël dit: “Ah, ah! Yahvé a donc rassemblé ces trois rois pour les livrer entre les mains de Moab!”	10 "Alas!" exclaimed the king of Israel. "The LORD has called together these three kings to put them in the grasp of Moab."
11 Josaphat lui demanda: “N’y a-t-il pas ici un prophète de Yahvé par lequel nous pourrions consulter Yahvé?” L’un des serviteurs du roi d’Israël lui dit: “Il y a ici Élisée fils de Chafat, celui qui versait l’eau sur les mains d’Élie.”	11 But the king of Judah asked, "Is there no prophet of the LORD here through whom we may inquire of the LORD?" One of the officers of the king of Israel replied, "Elisha, son of Shaphat, who poured water on the hands of Elijah, is here."
12 Josaphat dit: “La parole de Yahvé est avec lui.” Alors le roi d’Israël, Josaphat et le roi d’Édom descendirent à sa rencontre.	12 "He has the word of the LORD," the king of Judah agreed. So the kings of Israel, Judah, and Edom went down to Elisha.
13 Élisée dit au roi d’Israël: “Qu’est-ce que j’ai à voir dans tes affaires? Va donc trouver les prophètes de ton père!” Mais le roi d’Israël insista: “C’est Yahvé qui a fait venir ces trois rois, va-t-il maintenant les livrer entre les mains de Moab?”	13 "What do you want with me?" Elisha asked the king of Israel. "Go to the prophets of your father and to the prophets of your mother." "No," the king of Israel replied. "The LORD has called these three kings together to put them in the grasp of Moab."
14 Élisée lui dit: “Aussi vrai que Yahvé des armées, celui que je sers, est vivant, si je n’avais pas égard à Josaphat roi de Juda, je ne te regarderais même pas, je ne te verrais pas.	14 Then Elisha said, "As the LORD of hosts lives, whom I serve, were it not that I respect the king of Judah, I should neither look at you nor notice you at all.
15 Maintenant, amenez-moi un joueur de harpe.” Pendant que le harpiste jouait, la main de Yahvé fut sur Élisée.	15 Now get me a minstrel." When the minstrel played, the power of the LORD came upon Elisha
16 Il dit alors: “Ainsi parle Yahvé: Creusez des fosses et des fosses dans cette vallée!	16 and he announced: "Thus says the LORD, 'Provide many catch basins in this wadi.'
17 Car voici ce que dit Yahvé: Vous ne verrez pas de vent, vous ne verrez pas de pluie, et cependant la vallée se remplira d’eau. Alors vous boirez, vous, vos troupeaux et vos bêtes de somme.	17 For the LORD says, 'Though you will see neither wind nor rain, yet this wadi will be filled with water for you, your livestock, and your pack animals to drink.'
18 Mais tout cela est peu de chose aux yeux de Yahvé, il veut encore livrer Moab entre vos mains.	18 And since the LORD does not consider this enough, he will also deliver Moab into your grasp.
19 Vous frapperez toutes les villes fortifiées, vous abattrez tous les arbres fruitiers, vous boucherez toutes les sources d’eau et vous dévasterez tous les meilleurs champs en y jetant des pierres.”	19 You shall destroy every fortified city, fell every fruit tree, stop up all the springs, and ruin every fertile field with stones."
20 De fait, au matin, à l’heure où l’on présente le sacrifice, voici que l’eau arriva par le chemin d’Édom et la terre se remplit d’eau.	20 In the morning, at the time of the sacrifice, water came from the direction of Edom and filled the land.
21 Tous les Moabites avaient appris que les rois s’avançaient pour les attaquer; tous les hommes capables de porter les armes furent donc rassemblés et ils se postèrent sur la frontière.	21 Meanwhile, all Moab heard that the kings had come to give them battle; every man capable of bearing arms was called up and stationed at the border.
22 Ils s’étaient levés de bon matin, et lorsque le soleil brilla au-dessus des eaux, les Moabites virent les eaux en face d’eux rouges comme du sang.	22 Early that morning, when the sun shone on the water, the Moabites saw the water at a distance as red as blood.
23 Ils se dirent: “C’est du sang! Les rois se sont battus, ils se sont frappés les uns les autres! Maintenant, Moabites, au pillage!”	23 "This is blood!" they exclaimed. "The kings have fought among themselves and killed one another. Quick! To the spoils, Moabites!"
24 Ils s’avancèrent donc vers le camp d’Israël, mais les Israélites se levèrent et frappèrent Moab qui prit la fuite devant eux; ils pénétrèrent dans le pays de Moab et le dévastèrent.	24 But when they reached the camp of Israel, the Israelites rose up and attacked the Moabites, who fled from them. They ranged through the countryside striking down the Moabites, and
25 Ils détruisirent les villes: chacun jetait sa pierre dans les meilleurs champs, au point qu’ils en étaient remplis. Ils bouchèrent toutes les sources et abattirent tous les arbres fruitiers, si bien qu’il ne resta rien à Kir-Hérès sinon ses pierres. Les frondeurs qui l’avaient encerclée la harcelèrent.	25 destroying the cities; each of them cast stones onto every fertile field till they had loaded it down; all the springs they stopped up and every useful tree they felled. Finally only Kir-hareseth was left behind its stone walls, and the slingers had surrounded it and were attacking it.
26 Lorsqu’il vit que la bataille tournait mal pour lui, le roi de Moab prit 700 hommes armés d’épées pour faire une percée en direction du roi d’Édom; mais il ne réussit pas.	26 When he saw that he was losing the battle, the king of Moab took seven hundred swordsmen to break through to the king of Aram, but he failed.
27 Alors il prit son fils aîné, celui qui devait régner à sa place et il l’offrit en holocauste sur la muraille. À la suite de cela, les Israélites eurent de grosses difficultés, ils s’éloignèrent de lui et regagnèrent leur pays.	27 So he took his first-born, his heir apparent, and offered him as a holocaust upon the wall. The wrath against Israel was so great that they gave up the siege and returned to their own land.
