1 Le roi David se faisait vieux, il était très âgé; on avait beau le couvrir de vêtements, il ne pouvait plus se réchauffer.	1 Now king David had become elderly, and he had many days in his lifetime. And though he was covered with clothes, he was not warmed.
2 Ses serviteurs lui dirent: “Que l’on aille chercher pour mon seigneur le roi une jeune fille vierge; elle sera à son service, elle le soignera, elle dormira avec lui et elle tiendra chaud à mon seigneur le roi.”	2 Therefore, his servants said to him: “Let us seek, for our lord the king, a young virgin. And let her stand before the king, and warm him, and sleep in his bosom, and provide warmth for our lord the king.”
3 On chercha donc à travers tout le pays d’Israël une belle jeune fille, et l’on trouva Abisag de Chounem; on la conduisit auprès du roi.	3 And so they sought a beautiful young woman in all the parts of Israel. And they found Abishag, a Shunammite, and they led her to the king.
4 Cette jeune fille était vraiment très belle, elle soignait le roi, et elle le servait, mais il n’eut pas de rapports avec elle.	4 Now the girl was exceedingly beautiful. And she slept with the king, and she ministered to him. Yet truly, the king did not know her.
5 Pendant ce temps, Adonias fils de Haggit se mettait en avant: “C’est moi, disait-il, qui régnerai.” Il s’était acheté un char et des chevaux et 50 hommes couraient devant lui.	5 Then Adonijah, the son of Haggith, exalted himself, saying, “I shall reign!” And he appointed for himself chariots and horsemen, with fifty men who would run before him.
6 Son père n’avait jamais voulu le contrarier, lui dire: “Pourquoi agis-tu de la sorte?” Sa mère Haggit l’avait mis au monde après Absalom et lui aussi était très beau.	6 Neither did his father chastise him at any time, saying, “Why have you done this?” Now he, too, was very beautiful, the second in birth, after Absalom.
7 Il eut des entretiens avec Joab fils de Sérouya, avec le prêtre Ébyatar, et ceux-ci entrèrent dans le parti d’Adonias,	7 And he conferred with Joab, the son of Zeruiah, and with Abiathar, the priest, who gave assistance to the side of Adonijah.
8 mais le prêtre Sadoq, Bénayas fils de Yoyada, le prophète Nathan, Chiméï et Réï, ainsi que les braves de David, refusèrent de soutenir Adonias.	8 Yet truly, Zadok, the priest, and Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada, and Nathan, the prophet, and Shimei and Rei, and the mature men of the army of David were not with Adonijah.
9 Un jour Adonias immola des brebis, des bœufs et des veaux gras près de la Pierre-qui-Glisse, à côté de la source du Foulon. Il invita tous ses frères, les fils du roi et tous les hommes de Juda qui étaient au service du roi,	9 Then Adonijah, having immolated rams and calves and every kind of fat cattle beside the Stone of the Serpent, which was in the vicinity of the fountain Rogel, summoned all his brothers, the sons of the king, and all the men of Judah, the servants of the king.
10 mais il n’invita ni le prophète Nathan, ni Bénayas, ni les braves, ni son frère Salomon.	10 But he did not summon Nathan, the prophet, and Benaiah, and all the mature men, and Solomon, his brother.
11 Alors Nathan dit à Bethsabée, la mère de Salomon: “Sais-tu qu’Adonias fils de Haggit s’est fait roi, et mon seigneur David n’en sait rien?	11 And so Nathan said to Bathsheba, the mother of Solomon: “Have you not heard that Adonijah, the son of Haggith, has begun to reign, and that our lord David is ignorant of this?
12 Maintenant laisse-moi te donner un conseil si tu veux sauver ta tête et celle de ton fils Salomon.	12 Now then, come, accept my counsel, and save your life and the life of your son Solomon.
13 Va trouver le roi David et dis-lui: Mon seigneur le roi a bien fait ce serment à sa servante: C’est ton fils Salomon qui régnera après moi, c’est lui qui s’assiéra sur mon trône. Comment se fait-il donc qu’Adonias se soit fait roi?	13 Go and enter to king David, and say to him: ‘Did you not, my lord the king, swear to me, your handmaid, saying: “Your son Solomon shall reign after me, and he himself shall sit on my throne?” Then why does Adonijah reign?’
14 Et pendant que tu seras là à parler avec le roi, j’entrerai derrière toi et je confirmerai tes paroles.”	14 And while you are still speaking with the king there, I will enter after you, and I will complete your words.”
15 Bethsabée se rendit donc à la chambre du roi; il était très vieux et Abisag de Chounem était à son service.	15 And so Bathsheba entered to the king in the bedroom. Now the king was very old, and Abishag, the Shunammite, was ministering to him.
16 Elle s’agenouilla et se prosterna devant le roi, et le roi lui dit: “Que veux-tu?”	16 Bathsheba bowed herself, and she reverenced the king. And the king said to her, “What do you wish?”
17 Elle lui répondit: “Mon seigneur n’a-t-il pas fait ce serment à sa servante par Yahvé, son Dieu: ‘Ton fils Salomon régnera après moi, c’est lui qui s’assiéra sur mon trône?’	17 And responding, she said: “My lord, you swore to your handmaid, by the Lord your God: ‘your son Solomon will reign after me, and he himself shall sit upon my throne.’
18 Or voilà qu’Adonias s’est fait roi sans que tu le saches, mon seigneur le roi.	18 And now behold, Adonijah reigns, while you, my lord the king, are ignorant of it.
19 Il a immolé une quantité de bœufs, des veaux gras, des moutons; il a invité tous les fils du roi ainsi que le prêtre Ébyatar et le général Joab, mais ton serviteur Salomon, il ne l’a pas invité.	19 He has slain oxen, and every kind of fattened cattle, and many rams. And he has summoned all the sons of the king, as well as Abiathar, the priest, and Joab, the leader of the military. But Solomon, your servant, he did not summon.
20 Pendant ce temps tout Israël a les yeux tournés vers toi, mon seigneur le roi, pour que tu désignes ton successeur.	20 Truly now, my lord the king, the eyes of all of Israel look with favor upon you, that you may indicate to them who ought to sit upon your throne, my lord the king, after you.
21 Ne vois-tu pas que lorsque mon seigneur le roi sera couché avec ses pères, moi et mon fils Salomon nous paierons tout cela?”	21 Otherwise, this will be: when my lord the king sleeps with his fathers, I and my son Solomon will be as sinners.”
22 Elle n’avait pas fini de parler que le prophète Nathan arriva.	22 And while she was still speaking with the king, Nathan, the prophet, arrived.
23 On l’annonça au roi: “Le prophète Nathan est là.” Il entra chez le roi, se prosterna la face contre terre,	23 And they announced to the king, saying, “Nathan, the prophet, is here.” And when he had entered in the sight of the king, and he had reverenced prone on the ground,
24 puis il dit: “Mon seigneur le roi, tu as sans doute décidé qu’Adonias serait roi après toi et s’assiérait sur ton trône,	24 Nathan said: “My lord the king, did you say, ‘Let Adonijah reign after me, and let him sit upon my throne?’
25 car aujourd’hui il est descendu pour immoler une quantité de bœufs, de veaux gras et de moutons. Il a invité tous les fils du roi, les chefs de l’armée et le prêtre Ébyatar, et en ce moment ils mangent, ils boivent devant lui et ils crient: Vive le roi Adonias!	25 For today, he descended, and he immolated oxen, and fattened cattle, and many rams. And he summoned all the sons of the king, and the leaders of the army, along with Abiathar, the priest. And they are eating and drinking before him, and saying, ‘As king Adonijah lives.’
26 “Mais moi, ton serviteur, le prêtre Sadoq, Bénayas, fils de Yoyada et ton serviteur Salomon, nous n’avons pas été invités.	26 But he did not summon me, your servant, and Zadok, the priest, and Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada, and Solomon, your lowly servant.
27 Est-il possible que cela vienne de mon seigneur le roi? Est-il possible qu’il ait caché à ses serviteurs le nom de celui qui s’assiérait sur le trône après lui?”	27 Could this word have gone out from my lord the king, and could you not have revealed it to me, your servant, as to who would be seated upon the throne of my lord the king after him?”
28 Le roi David répondit: “Appelez-moi Bethsabée.” Elle entra donc chez le roi et se tint devant lui.	28 And king David responded, saying, “Summon to me Bathsheba.” And when she had entered before the king, and she had stood before him,
29 Le roi fit ce serment: “Aussi vrai que Yahvé est vivant, lui qui m’a délivré de toutes mes épreuves,	29 the king swore and said: “As the Lord lives, who has rescued my soul from all distress,
30 aujourd’hui même je vais tenir le serment que j’ai fait par Yahvé, Dieu d’Israël. Car j’ai bien dit: ‘Ton fils Salomon régnera après moi, c’est lui qui s’assiéra sur mon trône à ma place.’ ”	30 just as I swore to you by the Lord God of Israel, saying: ‘Your son Solomon shall reign after me, and he himself shall sit upon my throne in my place,’ so shall I do this day.”
31 Bethsabée s’agenouilla, elle se prosterna la face contre terre devant le roi et dit: “Que mon seigneur le roi David vive à jamais!”	31 And Bathsheba, having lowered her face to the ground, reverenced the king, saying, “May my lord David live forever.”
32 Alors le roi David ordonna: “Appelez-moi le prêtre Sadoq, le prophète Nathan et Bénayas fils de Yoyada.” Ils vinrent et se présentèrent devant le roi.	32 And king David said, “Summon to me Zadok, the priest, and Nathan, the prophet, and Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada.” And when they had entered before the king,
33 Le roi leur dit: “Réunissez les serviteurs de votre seigneur; vous ferez monter mon fils Salomon sur ma propre mule et vous descendrez avec lui à la source de Guihon.	33 he said to them: “Take with you the servants of your lord, and place my son Solomon upon my mule. And lead him to Gihon.
34 Là, le prêtre Sadoq et le prophète Nathan le consacreront comme roi d’Israël; vous sonnerez du cor et tout le monde criera: ‘Vive le roi Salomon!’	34 And let Zadok, the priest, and Nathan, the prophet, anoint him in that place as the king over Israel. And you shall sound the trumpet, and you shall say, ‘As king Solomon lives.’
35 Puis vous remonterez derrière lui et il viendra s’asseoir sur mon trône. Car c’est lui qui va régner à ma place, c’est lui que j’ai choisi pour diriger Israël et Juda.”	35 And you shall ascend after him, and he shall arrive and shall sit upon my throne. And he himself shall reign in my place. And I will command that he be the ruler over Israel and over Judah.”
36 Bénayas, fils de Yoyada, répondit au roi: “Amen! Que Yahvé, le Dieu de mon seigneur le roi réalise tout cela!	36 And Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada, responded to the king, saying: “Amen. So says the Lord, the God of my lord the king.
37 Que Yahvé soit maintenant avec Salomon comme il a été avec mon seigneur le roi, qu’il rende son trône plus glorieux encore que le trône de mon seigneur le roi David!”	37 In the same way that the Lord has been with my lord the king, so may he be with Solomon. And may he make his throne more sublime than the throne of my lord, king David.”
38 Le prêtre Sadoq, le prophète Nathan et Bénayas, fils de Yoyada, firent donc monter Salomon sur la mule du roi David et le menèrent à Guihon escortés des Kérétiens et des Pélétiens.	38 Then Zadok, the priest, and Nathan, the prophet, descended, with Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites and Pelethites. And they placed Solomon on the mule of king David, and they led him to Gihon.
39 Le prêtre Sadoq prit la corne d’huile dans la Tente et il consacra Salomon, on sonna du cor et tout le peuple cria: “Vive le roi Salomon!”	39 And Zadok, the priest, took the horn of oil from the tabernacle, and he anointed Solomon. And they sounded the trumpet. And all the people said, “As king Solomon lives.”
40 Puis tout le peuple remonta derrière lui; les gens jouaient de la flûte et manifestaient une grande joie, la terre tremblait à se fendre au bruit qu’ils faisaient.	40 And the entire multitude ascended after him. And the people were playing on pipes, and rejoicing with great joy. And the earth resounded before the noise of them.
41 Adonias et tous ses invités en entendirent l’écho alors qu’ils achevaient leur repas. Joab entendit le son du cor: “Pourquoi, dit-il, ces bruits d’une ville en fête?”	41 Then Adonijah, and all who had been summoned by him, heard it. And now the feast had ended. Then, too, Joab, hearing the voice of the trumpet, said, “What is the meaning of this clamor from the tumultuous city?”
42 Il parlait encore lorsque Yonathan, le fils du prêtre Ébyatar, arriva. Adonias lui dit: “Approche, tu es un homme et tu apportes sûrement de bonnes nouvelles.”	42 While he was still speaking, Jonathan, the son of Abiathar the priest, arrived. And Adonijah said to him, “Enter, for you are a valiant man, and you report good news.”
43 Mais Yonathan répondit à Adonias: “C’est tout le contraire! Notre seigneur le roi David a consacré Salomon comme roi.	43 And Jonathan answered Adonijah: “By no means. For our lord king David has appointed Solomon as king.
44 Le roi a envoyé avec lui le prêtre Sadoq, le prophète Nathan, Bénayas fils de Yoyada, les Kérétiens et les Pélétiens. Ils l’ont assis sur la mule du roi	44 And he has sent with him Zadok, the priest, and Nathan, the prophet, and Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites and Pelethites. And they have placed him on the mule of the king.
45 et ensuite, à Guihon, le prêtre Sadoq et le prophète Nathan l’ont consacré comme roi. Ils sont remontés en poussant des cris de joie et la ville était en fête: c’est le bruit que vous avez entendu.	45 And Zadok, the priest, and Nathan, the prophet, have anointed him king, at Gihon. And they are ascending from there, rejoicing, and so the city resounds. This is the noise that you have heard.
46 “Et mieux que cela: Salomon s’est assis sur le trône du roi	46 But also, Solomon sits upon the throne of the kingdom.
47 et les serviteurs du roi sont venus féliciter notre seigneur le roi David: ‘Que ton Dieu, disaient-ils, rende le nom de Salomon plus glorieux encore que le tien, qu’il élève son trône plus encore que le tien.’ Le roi lui-même s’est prosterné sur son lit,	47 And the servants of the king, entering, have blessed our lord king David, saying: ‘May God amplify the name of Solomon above your name, and may he magnify his throne above your throne.’ And the king reverenced from his bed.
48 et voici ce qu’il a dit: ‘Béni soit Yahvé, le Dieu d’Israël, qui a permis aujourd’hui que mes yeux voient l’un de mes descendants assis sur mon trône!’ ”	48 And he said: ‘Blessed is the Lord, the God of Israel, who today has bestowed someone to sit upon my throne, while my eyes may see it.’ ”
49 À ces mots, tous les invités d’Adonias furent pris de panique, ils se levèrent et partirent chacun de leur côté.	49 Therefore, all those who had been summoned by Adonijah were terrified. And they all rose up, and each one went his own way.
50 Adonias eut peur de Salomon, il se leva et s’en alla saisir les cornes de l’autel.	50 Then Adonijah, fearing Solomon, rose up and went away. And he took hold of the horn of the altar.
51 On informa Salomon: “Voici qu’Adonias a peur du roi Salomon, il a saisi les cornes de l’autel et il a dit: ‘Que le roi Salomon me jure aujourd’hui de ne pas me faire mourir par l’épée.’ ”	51 And they reported to Solomon, saying: “Behold, Adonijah, fearing king Solomon, has taken hold of the horn of the altar, saying: ‘May king Solomon swear to me this day that he will not put to death his servant with the sword.’ ”
52 Salomon répondit: “S’il se conduit comme un homme honnête, pas un de ses cheveux ne tombera à terre, mais s’il se conduit mal, il mourra.”	52 And Solomon said: “If he is a good man, not so much as one hair of his head shall fall to the ground. But if evil is found in him, he shall die.”
53 Le roi envoya des gens pour le faire descendre de l’autel, et Adonias vint se prosterner devant le roi Salomon. Salomon lui dit: “Rentre chez toi.	53 Therefore, king Solomon sent and brought him from the altar. And entering, he reverenced king Solomon. And Solomon said to him, “Go to your own house.”
