1 Après ces événements, la parole de Yahvé fut adressée à Abram dans une vision: “Ne crains pas, Abram, je suis ton bouclier, ta récompense sera très grande.”	1 And so, these things having been transacted, the word of the Lord came to Abram by a vision, saying: “Do not be afraid, Abram, I am your protector, and your reward is exceedingly great.”
2 Abram répondit: “Seigneur Yahvé, que me donneras-tu? Je m’en vais sans enfants, et c’est Éliézer de Damas qui héritera de ma maison.”	2 And Abram said: “Lord God, what will you give to me? I may go without children. And the son of the steward of my house is this Eliezer of Damascus.”
3 Abram dit encore: “Comme tu ne m’as pas donné de descendance, c’est l’un de mes serviteurs qui sera mon héritier.”	3 And Abram added: “Yet to me you have not given offspring. And behold, my servant born in my house will be my heir.”
4 Alors la parole de Yahvé lui fut adressée en ces termes: “Ce n’est pas lui qui héritera de toi; ton héritier sera un enfant à toi né de ton sang.”	4 And immediately the word of the Lord came to him, saying: “This one will not be your heir. But he who will come from your loins, the same will you have for your heir.”
5 Il le fit alors sortir et lui dit: “Regarde le ciel et compte les étoiles si tu peux les compter.” Et il ajouta: “Ainsi sera ta descendance.”	5 And he brought him outside, and he said to him, “Take in the heavens, and number the stars, if you can.” And he said to him, “So also will your offspring be.”
6 Abram crut en Yahvé, et pour cela, Yahvé le regarda comme juste.	6 Abram believed God, and it was reputed to him unto justice.
7 Il lui dit: “Je suis Yahvé qui t’ai fait sortir d’Our en Kaldée, pour te donner ce pays et qu’il soit ton domaine.”	7 And he said to him, “I am the Lord who led you away from Ur of the Chaldeans, so as to give you this land, and so that you would possess it.”
8 Abram répondit: “Seigneur Yahvé, comment saurai-je que je le posséderai?”	8 But he said, “Lord God, in what way may I be able to know that I will possess it?”
9 Il lui dit: “Prends-moi une génisse de trois ans, une chèvre de trois ans, un bélier de trois ans, une tourterelle et un pigeonneau.”	9 And the Lord responded by saying: “Take for me a cow of three years, and a she-goat of three years, and a ram of three years, also a turtle-dove and a pigeon.”
10 Abram prit tous ces animaux et les partagea par le milieu, il plaça chaque moitié vis-à-vis de l’autre moitié, mais il ne partagea pas les oiseaux.	10 Taking all these, he divided them through the middle, and placed both parts opposite one another. But the birds he did not divide.
11 Les rapaces venaient s’abattre sur les cadavres, mais Abram les chassa.	11 And birds descended upon the carcasses, but Abram drove them away.
12 Comme le soleil se couchait, un profond sommeil tomba sur Abram, et il se trouva pris d’angoisse, plongé dans une grande obscurité.	12 And when the sun was setting, a deep sleep fell upon Abram, and a dread, great and dark, invaded him.
13 Dieu dit alors à Abram: “Tu dois savoir que tes descendants vivront comme étrangers dans un pays qui n’est pas le leur; ils deviendront esclaves, on les opprimera durant 400 ans.	13 And it was said to him: “Know beforehand that your future offspring will be sojourners in a land not their own, and they will subjugate them in servitude and afflict them for four hundred years.
14 Mais alors je jugerai la nation de leurs maîtres, après quoi ils s’en iront comblés de richesses.	14 Yet truly, I will judge the nation that they will serve, and after this they will depart with great substance.
15 Quant à toi, tu iras en paix rejoindre tes pères et tu seras mis au tombeau après une heureuse vieillesse.	15 But you will go to your fathers in peace and be buried at a good old age.
16 Ce n’est qu’à la quatrième génération que tes descendants reviendront ici, car jusqu’alors la faute des Amorites ne sera pas assez grande pour que je les chasse.”	16 But in the fourth generation, they will return here. For the iniquities of the Amorites are not yet completed, even to this present time.”
17 Le soleil se coucha et la nuit se fit noire. Alors une fournaise et une torche embrasée passèrent entre les morceaux des victimes.	17 Then, when the sun had set, there came a dark mist, and there appeared a smoking furnace and a lamp of fire passing between those divisions.
18 Ce jour-là Yahvé conclut une alliance avec Abram. Il lui dit: “Je donne à ta descendance ce pays, depuis le fleuve d’Égypte jusqu’au grand fleuve, le fleuve de l’Euphrate.	18 On that day, God formed a covenant with Abram, saying: “To your offspring I will give this land, from the river of Egypt, even to the great river Euphrates:
19 Le pays des Kénites, des Kénizites, des Kadmonites,	19 the land of the Kenites and the Kenizzites, the Kadmonites
20 des Hittites, des Périsites, des Réphaïm,	20 and the Hittites, and the Perizzites, likewise the Rephaim,
21 des Amorites, des Cananéens, des Guirgachites et des Jébusites.	21 and the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Girgashites, and the Jebusites.”
