1 Gridando tutta quella gente, per tutta quella notte piansero;	1 At this, the whole community broke out with loud cries, and even in the night the people wailed.
2 e mormoraro contra Moisè e Aaron tutti i figliuoli d'Israel; e diceano:	2 All the Israelites grumbled against Moses and Aaron, the whole community saying to them, "Would that we had died in the land of Egypt, or that here in the desert we were dead!
3 Volesse Iddio, che noi fossimo morti in Egitto, e non in questa (oscurità e) deserta solitudine! Voglia Iddio, che noi moiamo; e non ci meni lo Signore in questa terra, dove saremo morti di coltello, e le nostre donne e i figliuoli saranno menati pregioni! Or non sarebbe meglio di tornare in Egitto?	3 Why is the LORD bringing us into this land only to have us fall by the sword? Our wives and little ones will be taken as booty. Would it not be better for us to return to Egypt?"
4 E incominciarono a dire l'uno all'altro: facciamo uno signore, e torniamo in Egitto.	4 So they said to one another, "Let us appoint a leader and go back to Egypt."
5 Udendo questo, Moisè e Aaron gittaronsi in terra, presente tutto il popolo.	5 But Moses and Aaron fell prostrate before the whole assembled community of the Israelites;
6 Vedendo Iosuè figliuolo di Nun, e Calef figliuolo di Iefone, i quali erano istati a vedere la terra di Canaan, isquarciarono le loro vestimenta.	6 while Joshua, son of Nun, and Caleb, son of Jephunneh, who had been in the party that scouted the land, tore their garments
7 E parlarono al popolo d'Israel: la terra che noi cercammo sì è molto buona.	7 and said to the whole community of the Israelites, "The country which we went through and explored is a fine, rich land.
8 E se Dio ci sarà in aiuto, egli ci menerà in essa, e daracci la terra che latte e mele genera.	8 If the LORD is pleased with us, he will bring us in and give us that land, a land flowing with milk and honey.
9 Non vogliate essere ribelli a Dio, e non te mete il popolo di quella terra, perciò che noi gli divoreremo come pane; egli è venuto loro meno ogni virtù; Iddio si è con esso noi, non temete.	9 But do not rebel against the LORD! You need not be afraid of the people of that land; they are but food for us! Their defense has left them, but the LORD is with us. Therefore, do not be afraid of them."
10 Udendo il popolo costoro, gridarono contro a loro; e volendogli allapidare, sì apparve la gloria di Dio sopra lo tetto del tabernacolo santo, veden dola tutto il popolo d'Israel.	10 In answer, the whole community threatened to stone them. But then the glory of the LORD appeared at the meeting tent to all the Israelites.
11 E parlò Iddio a Moisè, dicendo: anco questo popolo mormora contro a me: insino a tanto che questo popolo non ubbedirà, e non crederà a' miei segni i quali io hoe adoperati per lui,	11 And the LORD said to Moses, "How long will this people spurn me? How long will they refuse to believe in me, despite all the signs I have performed among them?
12 io gli percoterò di grande piaga, e consumerogli; e te farò principe sopra una grande gente e più forte di questa.	12 I will strike them with pestilence and wipe them out. Then I will make of you a nation greater and mightier than they."
13 Moisè disse a Dio: se coloro d'Egitto, dai quali tu togliesti questo popolo,	13 But Moses said to the LORD: "Are the Egyptians to hear of this? For by your power you brought out this people from among them.
14 e gli abitatori di quella terra, i quali tu ci dèi dare, hanno udito che tu se' in questo popolo, e lasciti vedere a faccia a faccia, e nella tua nebbia gli vai innanzi, e nella colonna del fuoco gli porti, nella nebbia nel die e nel fuoco la notte,	14 And are they to tell of it to the inhabitants of this land? It has been heard that you, O LORD, are in the midst of this people; you, LORD, who plainly reveal yourself! Your cloud stands over them, and you go before them by day in a column of cloud and by night in a column of fire.
15 udiranno che tu abbia morta tanta moltitudine, diranno	15 If now you slay this whole people, the nations who have heard such reports of you will say,
16 che tu non abbi potuto dare loro questa terra, e perciò gli hai tu morti in questa solitudine.	16 'The LORD was not able to bring this people into the land he swore to give them; that is why he slaughtered them in the desert.'
17 E imperciò cresca la tua magnificenza, siccome tu hae detto:	17 Now then, let the power of my Lord be displayed in its greatness, even as you have said,
18 Iddio è paziente e (pieno) di molte misericordie, levando via ogni iniquità, lo quale visiti i peccati de' padri in li figliuoli, nella terza e quarta generazione.	18 'The LORD is slow to anger and rich in kindness, forgiving wickedness and crime; yet not declaring the guilty guiltless, but punishing children to the third and fourth generation for their fathers' wickedness.'
19 Perciò ti priego che tu perdoni a questo popolo tuo secondo la grandezza delle tue misericordie, siccome tu fusti loro propizio di trargli d'Egitto insino a questo luogo (che tu debbia essere per inanzi).	19 Pardon, then, the wickedness of this people in keeping with your great kindness, even as you have forgiven them from Egypt until now."
20 E Iddio rispuose: per lo tuo priego io sì ho perdonato loro.	20 The LORD answered: "I pardon them as you have asked.
21 Vivo io; la gloria di Dio sì rimpierà la terra.	21 Yet, by my life and the LORD'S glory that fills the whole earth,
22 Ma tutti coloro i quali hanno veduta la mia maestà e li miei segni, li quali io feci in Egitto e nella solitudine, e hannomi già dieci volte tentato, e non hanno ubbedito alla voce mia,	22 of all the men who have seen my glory and the signs I worked in Egypt and in the desert, and who nevertheless have put me to the test ten times already and have failed to heed my voice,
23 non vederanno la terra per la quale io giurai ai padri loro; nè alcuno che m' abbia detratto entrerà dentro a quella terra.	23 not one shall see the land which I promised on oath to their fathers. None of these who have spurned me shall see it.
24 Caleb, mio servo, ch' è pieno d'altro spirito e ha me seguitato, io lo menerò in questa terra, la quale egli circui; e la sua generazione la possederà.	24 But because my servant Caleb has a different spirit and follows me unreservedly, I will bring him into the land where he has just been, and his descendants shall possess it.
25 Perciò che gli Amalechiti e i Cananei abitano nelle valli, domani movete le abitazioni vostre, e tornate nella solitudine per la via del mare rosso.	25 But now, since the Amalekites and Canaanites are living in the valleys, turn away tomorrow and set out in the desert on the Red Sea road."
26 Parlò Iddio a Moisè e ad Aaron. e disse loro:	26 The LORD also said to Moses and Aaron:
27 Insino a qui ancora questa moltitudine pessima mormora contro di me? Io hoe udito le loro lamentazioni;	27 "How long will this wicked community grumble against me? I have heard the grumblings of the Israelites against me.
28 e imperciò di' loro: vivo io, dice Iddio; secondo che voi averete parlato, io così vi farò.	28 Tell them: By my life, says the LORD, I will do to you just what I have heard you say.
29 In questo diserto i vostri corpi rimarranno; tutti quelli che mormorarono contro a me, da vinti anni in su,	29 Here in the desert shall your dead bodies fall. Of all your men of twenty years or more, registered in the census, who grumbled against me,
30 non entreranno nella terra, la quale io avea promessa a voi per eredità, eccetto Caleb figliuolo di Iefone, e Iosuè figliuolo di Nun.	30 not one shall enter the land where I solemnly swore to settle you, except Caleb, son of Jephunneh, and Joshua, son of Nun.
31 I vostri figliuoli, de quali altre volte dice ste che sarebbono pregioni de' nemici, gli menerò acciò che vedino la terra la qual v'è despiaciuta.	31 Your little ones, however, who you said would be taken as booty, I will bring in, and they shall appreciate the land you spurned.
32 E li corpi vostri giaceranno in questa solitudine.	32 But as for you, your bodies shall fall here in the desert,
33 XL anni saranno i vostri figliuoli vaghi (e profughi) nel deserto, e porteranno i vostri peccati, insino a tanto che saranno consumati i vostri corpi,	33 here where your children must wander for forty years, suffering for your faithlessness, till the last of you lies dead in the desert.
34 secondo quello numero di XL dì che andaste a vedere questa terra, computando uno anno per dì. Sicchè XL anni porterete la penitenza, e saperete la vendetta mia.	34 Forty days you spent in scouting the land; forty years shall you suffer for your crimes: one year for each day. Thus you will realize what it means to oppose me.
35 Però che, secondo ch' io vi parlai, farò a tutti coloro che mormorarono incontro di me: in questa solitudine si consumeranno, e verranno meno.	35 I, the LORD, have sworn to do this to all this wicked community that conspired against me: here in the desert they shall die to the last man."
36 Tutti coloro che andarono a vedere quella terra, e feceno murmurare la moltitudine contro a lui, e dissero che fosse ria, (e murmurarono),	36 And so it happened to the men whom Moses had sent to reconnoiter the land and who on returning had set the whole community grumbling against him by spreading discouraging reports about the land;
37 furono percossi e morti nel cospetto di Dio.	37 these men who had given out the bad report about the land were struck down by the LORD and died.
38 Iosuè figliuolo di Nun e Caleb figliuolo di Iefone vissero sopra tutti coloro che andarono a con siderare questa terra.	38 Of all the men who had gone to reconnoiter the land, only Joshua, son of Nun, and Caleb, son of Jephunneh, survived.
39 Parlò Moisè al popolo tutte queste parole; onde (per questo) il popolo fece grande pianto.	39 When Moses repeated these words to all the Israelites, the people felt great remorse.
40 E la mattina immantenente andò tutto il popolo suso nel monte, e dissero: noi siamo apparecchiati ad andare in quello luogo nel quale Iddio ci ha detto, è pentianci del peccato che noi avemo fatto.	40 Early the next morning they started up into the foothills, saying, "Here we are, ready to go up to the place that the LORD spoke of: for we were indeed doing wrong."
41 E Moisè disse loro: perchè passate voi il comandamento di Dio, conciosia cosa che sempre ve ne coglierà male?	41 But Moses said, "Why are you again disobeying the LORD'S orders? This cannot succeed.
42 Non andate ancora; però che Iddio non è con voi, e potreste venire nelle mani dei vostri inimici.	42 Do not go up, because the LORD is not in your midst; if you go, you will be beaten down before your enemies.
43 Gli Amalechiti e Cananei sono innanzi a voi, nelle cui mani verrete; però che voi non vo lete fare la volontà di Dio, ed egli non sarà con voi.	43 For there the Amalekites and Canaanites face you, and you will fall by the sword. You have turned back from following the LORD; therefore the LORD will not be with you."
44 E loro, stando tutti inebriati, salirono nella punta del monte. Moisè e l'arca non si levarono dalle loro abitazioni.	44 Yet they dared to go up into the foothills, even though neither the ark of the covenant of the LORD nor Moses left the camp.
45 Li Amalechiti e Cananei discesero; però che abitavano nelle montagne; e percossergli, e persegui tàrgli (continuamente) insino ad Orma.	45 And the Amalekites and Canaanites who dwelt in that hill country came down and defeated them, beating them back as far as Hormah.
