BIBBIA VOLGARE	NEW JERUSALEM
1 La sapienza dello umiliato esalterà il capo suo, e farallo sedere nel mezzo de' grandi.	1 Wisdom enables the poor to stand erect, and gives to the poor a place with the great.
2 Non lodare l' uomo secondo la forma sua, e non dispregiar l' uomo secondo l'aspetto suo.	2 Do not praise anyone for good looks, nor dislike anyone for mere appearance.
3 L'ape è picciola nelli volanti, e il frutto suo hae il principato delle dolcezze.	3 Smal among winged creatures is the bee but her produce is the sweetest of the sweet.
4 Mai non ti gloriare nelle vestimenta, e non te ne esaltare nel dì dello onore tuo; però che maravigliose sono l'opere dello Altissimo, e gloriose e occulte sono tutte le sue opere.	4 Do not grow proud when people honour you; for the works of the Lord are wonderful but hidden fromhuman beings.
5 Molti tiranni sederono in sedia regale, e tale di cui non si pensò portò corona.	5 Many monarchs have been made to sit on the ground, and the person nobody thought of has worn thecrown.
6 Molti potenti furono fortemente oppremuti; e li famosi furono dati in mano ad altrui.	6 Many influential people have been utterly disgraced, and prominent people have fal en into the power ofothers.
7 Prima che tu domandi, non vituperare alcuno; e quando averai addomandato, riprendi giustamente.	7 Do not find fault before making thorough enquiry; first reflect, then give a reprimand.
8 Non rispondere parola, prima che tu oda; in mezzo delli antichi non parlare.	8 Listen before you answer, and do not interrupt a speech before it is finished.
9 Non contendere di quella cosa che non ti grava; e non istare nel piato delli peccanti.	9 Do not wrangle about something that does not concern you, do not interfere in the quarrels of sinners.
10 Figliuol mio, le opere [tue] non sieno in molti atti; per che tu sia ricco, non sarai sanza peccato. Se tu seguiterai molti, non piglierai; e se tu fuggirai, non scamperai.	10 My child, do not take on a great amount of business; if you multiply your interests, you are bound to suffer for it; hurry as fast as you can, yet you wil never arrive, nor wil you escape by running away.
11 Egli è uomo che lavora e studiasi, ed è rammaricoso e crudele, e tanto maggiormente non abbonderae.	11 Some people work very hard at top speed, only to find themselves fal ing further behind.
12 E sì è un altro uomo languido, e che ha bisogno d' essere ricomperato, molto mancante in forza, e abbondante in povertade.	12 Or there is the slow kind of person, needing help, poor in possessions and rich in poverty; and theLord turns a favourable eye on him, lifts him out of his wretched condition,
13 E l'occhio di Dio guatoe colui in bene, e dirizzoe lui della umilitade sua, e levoe il capo suo (della tribulazione); in colui molti si sono maravigliati, e onorarono Iddio.	13 and enables him to hold his head high, thus causing general astonishment.
14 Li beni, li mali, la vita, la morte, la povertade la onestade sono da Dio.	14 Good and bad, life and death, poverty and wealth, al come from the Lord.
15 Sapienza e disciplina e scienza della legge sono appo Iddio; la dilezione e le vie de' buoni sono appo lui.	15
16 L'errore e le tenebre sono concreate a'peccatori; coloro che si esaltano nelli mali, invecchiano in quelli.	16
17 Il dono di Dio sta fermo alli giusti, e le utilitadi di colui averanno prosperitade in eterno.	17 To the devout the Lord's gift remains constant, and his favour will be there to lead them for ever.
18 Egli è chi arricchisce, temperatamente operando; e questa è la parte del merito suo,	18 Others grow rich by pinching and scraping, and here is the reward they receive for it:
19 ch' elli dice: apparecchia'mi, e io mangeroe ora de' beni miei solo.	19 although they say, 'Now I can sit back and enjoy the benefit of what I have got,' they do not know howlong this wil last; they will have to leave their goods to others and die.
20 E non sa che il tempo passa, e la morte s' approssima, e ch' egli lascerae tutte le cose agli altri, e morrae.	20 Stick to your job, work hard at it and grow old at your work.
21 Sta nel testamento tuo, e in quello favella (con noi), e nell' opera de' tuoi comandamenti invecchia.	21 Do not admire the achievements of sinners, trust the Lord and mind your own business; since it is atrifle in the eyes of the Lord, in a moment, suddenly to make the poor rich.
22 Non dimorare nell' opera de' peccatori; ma confidati in Dio, e sta nel luogo tuo.	22 The blessing of the Lord is the reward of the devout, in a moment God brings his blessing to flower.
23 Lieve è nel conspetto di Dio sùbito arricchire il povero.	23 Do not say, 'What are my needs, how much shal I have in the future?'
24 La benedizione di Dio (sùbito) s' affretta a venire nel merito del giusto, e il provvedimento d'essa fruttifica in veloce onore.	24 And do not say, 'I am self-sufficient, what disaster can affect me now?'
25 Non dire: di che ho io bisogno? e che arò io dopo questa vita?	25 In prosperous times, disasters are forgotten and in times of disaster, no one remembers prosperity.
26 Non dire: io son sufficiente a me stesso; e (avendo tanti beni) che mal mi puote avvenire?	26 Yet it is a trifle for the Lord on the day someone dies to repay him as his conduct deserves.
27 Nel dì de' beni non ti dimenticare de' mali, e nel dì de' mali non ti dimenticar de' beni.	27 A moment's adversity, and pleasures are forgotten; in a person's last hour his deeds wil standrevealed.
28 Però che lieve cosa è dinanzi da Dio, nel die della morte, meritare ciascuno secondo le sue vie.	28 Cal no one fortunate before his death; it is by his end that someone wil be known.
29 La afflizione sùbita fa dimenticare (l'onore e) li desideri carnali; e nella fine dell' uomo fia il palesamento delle sue opere.	29 Do not bring everyone home with you, for many are the traps of the crafty.
30 Anzi la morte non lodare alcuno uomo; però che l'uomo si conosce ne' suoi figliuoli.	30 Like a captive partridge in a cage, so is the heart of the proud: like a spy he watches for your downfal ,
31 Non menare ogni uomo in casa tua; per che molte sono le insidie del fraudolente.	31 ever on the look-out, turning good into bad and finding fault with what is praiseworthy.
32 Sì come li luoghi vicini del cuore delle pregne spirano e gettano fuori, e sì come la pernice s' induce nella gabbia, e sì come la cervia s' induce nel lacciuolo; così il cuore de' superbi, e così il ragguardatore vedendo il cadimento del prossimo suo.	32 A hearthful of glowing coals starts from a single spark, and the sinner lurks for the chance to spilblood.
33 Però che convertendo le cose buone in cattive, insidia e pone macula nelli eletti.	33 Beware of a scoundrel and his evil contrivances, in case he puts a smear on you for ever.
34 Da una favilla s' accresce il fuoco, e da uno malizioso s'accresce il sangue; l'uomo peccatore agguata il sangue.	34 Give a home to a stranger and he wil start trouble and estrange you from your own family.
35 Guàrdati dal pestilenzioso, però ch' elli fabbrica il male; guàrdati da lui, acciò ch' elli non induca sopra te ischernimento in perpetuo.
36 Caccia lo straniero; e se tu non lo cacci, elli ti sovvertirae nelli ravvolgimenti suoi, e faratti smarrire nelle proprie vie.
