BIBBIA VOLGARE	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Rispondendo lo Signore a Iob della caligine, disse:	1 Then from the heart of the tempest Yahweh gave Job his answer. He said:
2 Chi è questi, che involge le scienze nelli sermoni sanza documento?	2 Who is this, obscuring my intentions with his ignorant words?
3 Cìgniti, sì come uomo, li tuoi lombi; io addomanderò a te; rispondi a me.	3 Brace yourself like a fighter; I am going to ask the questions, and you are to inform me!
4 Dove eri, quando io poneva i fondamenti alla terra? Dimostralo a me, se hai intelligenza.	4 Where were you when I laid the earth's foundations? Tel me, since you are so wel -informed!
5 Chi pose le misure sue, se l'hai conosciuto? ovvero chi tese sopra lei lo regolo?	5 Who decided its dimensions, do you know? Or who stretched the measuring line across it?
6 Sopra quale cosa li piedi suoi sono fermati? Ovvero chi lasciò la pietra angolare sua,	6 What supports its pil ars at their bases? Who laid its cornerstone
7 conciosia cosa che me lodassero insieme le stelle mattutine, e rallegrassonsi tutti i figliuoli di Dio?	7 to the joyful concert of the morning stars and unanimous acclaim of the sons of God?
8 Chi rinchiuse cogli usci lo mare, quando rompea quasi dello ventre procedente,	8 Who pent up the sea behind closed doors when it leapt tumultuous from the womb,
9 conciosia cosa ch' io ponessi lo nuvolo, suo vestimento, e involgessi quello d'oscuritade, quasi come de' panni della fanciullezza?	9 when I wrapped it in a robe of mist and made black clouds its swaddling bands;
10 Io lo circondai (e intorniai quello) coi miei termini, e posi la chiavicella e gli usci.	10 when I cut out the place I had decreed for it and imposed gates and a bolt?
11 E dissi: insino qui verrai, e non andarae più oltre, e qui ti romperai gonfiando le tue onde.	11 'Come so far,' I said, 'and no further; here your proud waves must break!'
12 Or da poi il tuo nascimento comandasti al diluculo, e mostrasti all' aurora il suo luogo?	12 Have you ever in your life given orders to the morning or sent the dawn to its post,
13 Or (non) tenesti percotendo le estremità della terra, e percotesti li malvagi di quella?	13 to grasp the earth by its edges and shake the wicked out of it?
14 Sarà restituito sì come fango lo segnale : starà si come vestimento.	14 She turns it as red as a clay seal, she tints it as though it were a dress,
15 Sarà tolta dai malvagi la loro luce, e lo braccio alto sarà constretto.	15 stealing the light from evil-doers and breaking the arm raised to strike.
16 Or andasti tu nello profondo del mare, e nelle parti ultime dello abisso andasti?	16 Have you been right down to the sources of the sea and walked about at the bottom of the Abyss?
17 Or sono aperte a te le porte della morte, e le uscia tenebrose vedesti?	17 Have you been shown the gates of Death, have you seen the janitors of the Shadow dark as death?
18 E (non) hai considerato la larghezza della terra? Dimostra a me, se hai conosciuto ogni cosa,	18 Have you an inkling of the extent of the earth? Tell me al about it if you have!
19 nella quale via abita la luce, e quale sia lo luogo delle tenebre,	19 Which is the way to the home of the Light, and where does darkness live? -
20 acciò che tu meni ciascuno alli suoi termini, e intenda le vie della casa sua.	20 You could then show them the way to their proper places, you could put them on the path homeagain!
21 Sapevi tu allora, quando tu dovessi nascere? e conoscevi lo numero de' tuoi giorni?	21 If you do know, you must have been born when they were, you must be very old by now!
22 Or se' tu entrato ne' tesori della neve, ovvero li tesori della gragnuola riguardasti?	22 Have you visited the place where the snow is stored? Have you seen the stores of hail,
23 Li quali apparecchiai nel tempo del nemico, nel dì della zuffa e della battaglia?	23 which I keep for times of distress, for days of battle and war?
24 Per la qual via si sparge la luce, e dividesi lo caldo sopra la terra?	24 From which direction does the lightning fork, where in the world does the east wind blow itself out?
25 Chi diede al grandissimo vento piovoso lo corso, e la via al sonante tuono,	25 Who bores a channel for the downpour or clears the way for the rol ing thunder
26 acciò che piovesse sopra la terra sanza l'uomo nel deserto, dove non ha casa alcuno delli mortali,	26 so that rain may fal on lands where no one lives, and the deserts void of human dwel ing,
27 acciò ch' ella empisse il luogo senza via, e il desolato luogo producesse l'erba virente?	27 to meet the needs of the lonely wastes and make grass sprout on the thirsty ground?
28 Chi è padre della piova? ovvero chi generoe le cose stillate della rugiada?	28 Has the rain a father? Who begets the dewdrops?
29 Di quale ventre è venuto lo ghiaccio? e lo gelo del cielo, chi lo generoe?	29 What womb brings forth the ice, who gives birth to the frost of heaven,
30 Nella similitudine di pietra s' indurano l' acque, e la superficie dello abisso è constretta.	30 when the waters grow hard as stone and the surface of the deep congeals?
31 Or potrai tu congiugnere le risplendenti stelle Plejade, ovvero potrai guastare lo giro dell' Orsa? (cioè uno segno celeste lo quale è appo il polo settentrionale).	31 Can you fasten the harness of the Pleiades, or untie Orion's bands?
32 Or produci tu lo splendore nel suo tempo, e la stella vespertina sopr' a' figliuoli della terra la fai tu levare?	32 Can you guide the Crown season by season and show the Bear and its cubs which way to go?
33 Or hai conosciuto l'ordine del cielo, e poni la sua ragione nella terra?	33 Have you grasped the celestial laws? Could you make their writ run on the earth?
34 Or leverai fu nella nebula la tua voce, e lo impeto dell' acque coprirà te?	34 Can your voice carry as far as the clouds and make the pent-up waters do your bidding?
35 Or manderai tu le saette, e anderanno, e con reverenza diranno a te: siamo presenti?	35 Will lightning flashes come at your command and answer, 'Here we are'?
36 Chi pose nelle budella dell' uomo la sapienza? ovvero chi diede al gallo la intelligenza?	36 Who endowed the ibis with wisdom and gave the cock his intel igence?
37 Chi narrerà la ragione de' cieli, e lo canto e armonia del cielo chi farà dormire?	37 Whose skil details every cloud and tilts the water-skins of heaven
38 Quando si fondava la polvere nella terra, e le sue parti s' ingrassavano?	38 until the dust solidifies and the cracks in the ground close up?
39 Or piglierai tu alla lionessa la preda, e riempierai l'anima de' suoi figliuoli,	39 Do you go hunting prey for the lioness; do you satisfy the hunger of young lions
40 quando giacciono nelle caverne, e guatano nelle spelonche?	40 where they crouch in their den, waiting eagerly in the bushes?
41 Chi apparecchia al corbo la sua esca, quando li suoi figliuoli gridano a Dio vaganti, perciò che non hanno li cibi?	41 Who makes provision for the raven when his little ones cry out to God craning their necks in search offood?
