1 Due anni dopo, Faraone ebbe un sogno. Gli pareva di stare alla riva del fiume,	1 After two years Pharao had a dream. He thought he stood by the river,
2 da cui salivano sette vacche oltremodo belle e grasse a pascolare nella giuncaia.	2 Out of which came up seven kine, very beautiful and fat: and they fed in marshy places.
3 Dopo queste, dal fiume salivano sette altre, brutte e sfinite dalla magrezza, e si mettevano a pascolare sulla stessa riva del fiume dove era del verde,	3 Other seven also came up out of the river, ill favoured, and leanfleshed: and they fed on the very bank of the river, in green places:
4 e divorarono quelle che eran belle di aspetto e grasse. Svegliatosi Faraone,	4 And they devoured them, whose bodies were very beautiful and well conditioned. So Pharao awoke.
5 si addormentò di nuovo, ed ebbe un altro sogno: Sette spighe piene e bellissime si ergevano sopra un unico stelo;	5 dummy verses inserted by amos
6 ma ecco sorgere altrettante spighe smilze ed arse dal vento infocato,	6 He slept again, and dreamed another dream: Seven ears of corn came up upon one stalk full and fair:
7 divorare tutte le prime, che erano sì belle.
8 Svegliatosi Faraone dal sonno, pieno di paura, appena venuta la mattina, mandò a chiamare tutti gl'indovini d'Egitto e tutti i sapienti, ai quali radunati raccontò il sogno; ma non vi era chi ne pote sse dare la spiegazione.	8 Then seven other ears sprung up thin and blasted,
9 Allora finalmente il gran coppiere si ricordò, e disse: « Confesso il mio fallo:	9 And devoured all the beauty of the former. Pharao awaked after his rest:
10 il re, adirato contro i suoi servi, aveva fatto mettere nella prigione del capitano delle milizie me e il capo dei panettieri:	10 And when morning was come, being struck with fear, he sent to all the interpreters of Egypt, and to all the wise men: and they being called for, he told them his dream, and there was not any one that could interpret it.
11 e tutt'e due una notte vi facemmo un sogno che presagiva il futuro.	11 Then at length the chief butler remembering, said: I confess my sin:
12 Vi era lì un giovanetto ebreo, servo dello stesso capitano delle milizie: a lui raccontammo i sogni	12 The king being angry with his servants, commanded me and the chief baker to be cast into the prison of the captain of the soldiers:
13 ed udimmo ciò che gli eventi in seguito hanno provato: infatti io fui rimesso nel mio ufficio e l'altro fu appeso al patibolo».	13 Where in one night both of us dreamed a dream foreboding things to come.
14 Subito, per comando del re, Giuseppe fu tratto di prigione: lo raserò, gli cambiarono il vestito e lo presentarono a Faraone,	14 There was there a young man a Hebrew, servant to the same captain of the soldiers: to whom we told our dreams,
15 il quale gli disse: « Ho fatto dei sogni, e non v'è chi li possa interpretare: ed ho sentito che tu li sai interpretare con grande saviezza ».	15 And we heard what afterwards the event of the thing proved to be so. For I was restored to my office: and he was hanged upon a gibbet.
16 Giuseppe rispose: « Non io, ma Dio darà una risposta favorevole a Faraone ».	16 Forthwith at the king's command, Joseph was brought out of the prison, and they shaved him, and changing his apparel, brought him in to him.
17 E Faraone, narrando quanto aveva veduto, disse: « Mi pareva di stare sulla riva del fiume,	17 And he said to him: I have dreamed dreams, and there is no one that can expound them: Now I have heard that thou art very wise at interpreting them.
18 e che dal fiume uscissero sette vacche molto belle e grasse, e si misero a pascolare nella giuncaia.	18 Joseph answered: Without me, God shall give Pharao a prosperous answer.
19 Ed ecco, dietro a queste venirne altre sette, tanto brutte e scarne che non ne ho mai viste uguali nella terra d'Egitto.	19 So Pharao told what he had dreamed: Methought I stood upon the bank of the river,
20 E queste dopo aver divorate e consumate le prime,	20 And seven kine came up out of the river exceeding beautiful and full of flesh: and they grazed on green places in a marshy pasture.
21 non dettero alcun segno d'essere satolle, ma restarono magre e squallide come prima. Svegliatomi, fui di nuovo oppresso dal sonno,	21 And behold, there followed these, other seven kine, so very ill favoured and lean, that I never saw the like in the land of Egypt:
22 e vidi, sognando, sette spighe piene e bellissime spuntare da unico stelo,	22 And the devoured and consumed the former,
23 poi altre sette smilze, e riarse dal vento infocato, venire su da una stoppia,	23 And yet gave no mark of their being full: but were as lean and ill favoured as before. I awoke, and then fell asleep again,
24 e queste divoraron le prime che eran si belle. Ho raccontato il sogno agli indovini; ma nessuno lo sa spiegare ».	24 And dreamed a dream: Seven ears of corn grew upon one stalk, full and very fair.
25 Giuseppe rispose: «Il sogno del re si riduce ad uno solo: Dio ha mostrato a Faraone quello che sta per fare.	25 Other seven also thin and blasted, sprung of the stock:
26 Le sette vacche belle e le sette spighe piene sono sette anni d'abbondanza, e nel sogno hanno la stessa significazione;	26 And they devoured the beauty of the former: I told this dream to the conjecturers, and there is no man that can expound it.
27 Così le sette vacche scarne e macilente che salivano dopo le prime, e le sette spighe smilze e riarse dal vento infocato sono sette anni di futura carestia.	27 Joseph answered: The king's dream is one: God hath shewn to Pharao what he is about to do.
28 E la cosa si compirà in quest'ordine:	28 The seven beautiful kine, and the seven full ears, are seven years of plenty: and both contain the same meaning of the dream.
29 verranno sette anni di grande abbondanza in tutta la terra d'Egitto,	29 And the seven lean and thin kine that came up after them, and the seven thin ears that were blasted with the burning wind, are seven years of famine to come:
30 dopo i quali verranno sette anni di carestia cosi grande da far dimenticare tutta la passata abbondanza, perchè la fame consumerà la terra,	30 Which shall be fulfilled in this order:
31 e la grandezza della carestia assorbirà la grandezza dell'abbondanza.	31 Behold, there shall come seven years of great plenty in the whole land of Egypt:
32 L'aver poi tu veduto un secondo sogno che si riferisce alla stessa cosa è segno certo che la parola di Dio sarà avverata nei fatti, e quanto prima.	32 After which shall follow other seven years of so great scacity, that all the abundance before shall be forgotten: for the famine shall consume all the land,
33 Or dunque il re dovrebbe scegliere un uomo saggio e attivo e costituirlo sopra la terra d'Egitto,	33 And the greatness of the scarcity shall destroy the greatness of the plenty.
34 affinché egli deputi dei sopraintendenti in ogni regione, per radunare nei granai la quinta parte delle raccolte dei sette anni d'abbondanza,	34 And for that thou didst see the second time a dream pertaining to the same thing: it is a token of the certainty, and that the word of God cometh to pass, and is fulfilled speedily.
35 che già stanno per cominciare. Poi tutto il frumento deve essere rinchiuso a disposizione di Faraone, e conservato nelle città,	35 Now therefore let the king provide a wise and industrious man, and make him ruler over the land of Egypt:
36 affinchè sia pronto per la futura carestia di sette anni che verrà sopra l'Egitto: così il paese non sarà conusmato dalla fame ».	36 That he may appoint overseers over all the countries: and gather into barns the fifth part of the fruits, during the seven fruitful years,
37 Il consiglio piacque a Faraone e a tutti i suoi ministri,	37 That shall now presently ensue: and let all the corn be laid up under Pharao's hands and be reserved in the cities.
38 ai quali egli disse: « Potremo noi trovare un uomo come questo, che sia pieno dello spirito di Dio? »	38 And let it be in readiness, against the famine of seven years to come, which shall oppress Egypt, and the land shall not consumed with scarcity.
39 Disse pertanto a Giuseppe: « Giacché Dio t'ha mostrato tutto quello che hai detto, potrò io trovare uno più saggio o simile a te?	39 The counsel pleased Pharao and all his servants.
40 Tu avrai la sovrintendenza della mia casa; tutto il popolo obbedirà ai tuoi ordini, ed io non avrò sopra di te che la precedenza del trono ».	40 And he said to them: Can we find such another man, that is full of the spirit of God?
41 E Faraone disse ancora a Giuseppe: « Ecco io ti dò autorità su tutto il paese d'Egitto ».	41 He said therefore to Joseph: Seeing God hath shewn thee all that thou hast said, can I find one wiser and one like unto thee?
42 E toltosi l'anello di mano, lo pose in mano a lui; e lo fece vestire di lini finissimi e gli pose al collo una collana d'oro;	42 Thou shalt be over my house, and at the commandment of thy mouth all the people shall obey: only in the kingly throne will I be above thee.
43 e lo fece salire sul suo secondo cocchio, e l'araldo gridava che tutti piegassero le ginocchia dinanzi a lui, e sapessero che era sovrintendente di tutto il paese d'Egitto.	43 And again Pharao said to Joseph: Behold, I have appointed thee over the whole land of Egypt.
44 E il re disse ancora a Giuseppe: « Io sono Faraone: nessuno senza il tuo comando moverà mano o piede in tutto il paese d'Egitto ».	44 And he took his ring from his own hand, and gave it into his hand: and he put upon him a robe of silk, and put a chain of gold about his neck.
45 E gli mutò il nome e lo chiamò in lingua egiziana Salvatore del inondo. E gli diede in moglie Asenet figlia di Putifare, sacerdote di Eliopoli. Giuseppe adunque si recò a visitare la terra d'Egitto.	45 And he made him go up into his second chariot, the crier proclaiming that all should bow their knee before him, and that they should know he was made govenor over the whole land of Egypt.
46 Aveva trent'anni quando si presentò a Faraone, e fece il giro di tutte le provincie d'Egitto.	46 And the king said to Joseph: I am Pharao; without thy commandment no man shall move hand or foot in all the land of Egypt.
47 Or durante la fertilità di sette anni, il grano legato in covoni, fu radunato nei granai d'Egitto,	47 And he turned his name, and called him in the Eyyptian tounge, The saviour of the world. And he gave him to wife Asenth the daughter of Putiphare priest of Heliopolis. Then Joseph went out to the land of Egypt:
48 e tutto il di più delle raccolte fu riposto in ciascuna città.	48 (Now he was thirty years old when he stood before king Pharao) and he went round all the countries of Egypt.
49 E l'abbondanza del grano fu sì grande che uguagliò la rena del mare, e sorpassò ogni misura.	49 And the fruitfulness of the seven years came: and the corm being bound up into sheaves was gathered together into the barns of Egypt.
50 Prima che venisse la carestia nacquero a Giuseppe due figlioli, i quali furono partoriti a lui da Asenet figlia di Putifare, sacerdote di Eliopoli.	50 And all the abundance of grain was laid up in every city.
51 Al primogenito pose il nome di Manasse, dicendo: « Dio mi ha fatto dimenticare ogni mio affanno ed anche la casa di mio padre ».	51 And there was so great abundance of wheat, that it was equal to the sand of the sea, and the plenty exceeded measure.
52 Al secondo poi diede il nome di Efraim, dicendo: « Il Signore mi ha fatto crescere nella terra della mia afflizione ».	52 And before the famine came, Joseph had two sons born: whom Aseneth the daughter of Putiphare priest of Heliopolis bore unto him.
53 Passati poi i sette anni d'abbondanza in Egitto,	53 And he called the name of the first born Manasses, saying: God hath made me to forget all my labours, and my father's house.
54 cominciarono a venire i sette anni di carestia predetti da Giuseppe; e la fame si fece sentire in tutto il mondo, mentre nella terra d'Egitto c'era del pane.	54 And he named the second Epharaim, saying: God hath made me to grow in the land of my poverty.
55 E quando anche l'Egitto sentì la fame, il popolo si raccomandò a Faraone per avere da mangiare. E Faraone rispose: «Andate da Giuseppe, e fate tutto quello che vi dirà ».	55 Now when the seven years of the plenty that had been in Egypt were past:
56 Or la fame cresceva ogni giorno su tutta la terra, e Giuseppe, aperti tutti i granai, vendè agli Egiziani, chè erano anch'essi tormentati dalla fame.	56 The seven years of scarcity, which Joseph had foretold, began to come: and the famine prevailed in the whole world, but there was bread in all the land of Egypt.
57 E da tutte le parti venivano in Egitto a comprar da mangiare per trovar sollievo al male della carestia.	57 And when there also they began to be famished, the people cried to Pharao for food. And he said to them: Go to Joseph: and do all that he shall say to you.
	58 And the famine increased daily in all the land: and Joseph opened all the barns, and sold to the Egyptians: for the famine had oppressed them also.
