Livro do Eclesiastes 12

SAGRADA BIBLIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Mas, lembra-te de teu Criador nos dias de tua juventude, antes que venham os maus dias e que apareçam os anos dos quais dirás: Não sinto prazer neles;	1 Remember your Creator while you are still young, before the bad days come, before the years comewhich, you wil say, give you no pleasure;
2 antes que se escureçam o sol, a luz, a lua a as estrelas, e que à chuva sucedam as nuvens;	2 before the sun and the light grow dim and the moon and stars, before the clouds return after the rain;
3 anos nos quais tremem os guardas da casa, nos quais se curvam os robustos e param de moer as moleiras pouco numerosas, nos quais se escurecem aqueles que olham pela janela,	3 the time when your watchmen become shaky, when strong men are bent double, when the women,one by one, quit grinding, and, as they look out of the window, find their sight growing dim.
4 nos quais se fecham para a rua os dois batentes da porta, nos quais se enfraquece o ruído de moinho, nos quais os homens se levantam ao canto do passarinho, nos quais se extingue o som da voz,	4 When the street-door is kept shut, when the sound of grinding fades away, when the first cry of a birdwakes you up, when all the singing has stopped;
5 nos quais se temem as subidas; nos quais se terão sobressaltos no caminho, nos quais a amendoeira branqueia, nos quais o gafanhoto engorda, nos quais a alcaparra perde a sua eficácia, porque o homem se encaminha para a morada eterna e os carpidores percorrem as ruas;	5 when going uphil is an ordeal and you are frightened at every step you take- yet the almond tree is inflower and the grasshopper is weighed down and the caper-bush loses its tang; while you are on the way to youreverlasting home and the mourners are assembling in the street;
6 antes que se rompa o cordão de prata, que se despedace a lâmpada de ouro, antes que se quebre a bilha na fonte, e que se fenda a roldana sobre a cisterna;	6 before the silver thread snaps, or the golden bowl is cracked, or the pitcher shattered at the fountain,or the pul ey broken at the wel -head:
7 antes que a poeira retorne à terra para se tornar o que era; e antes que o sopro de vida retorne a Deus que o deu.	7 the dust returns to the earth from which it came, and the spirit returns to God who gave it.
8 Vaidade das vaidades!, diz o Eclesiastes, tudo é vaidade.	8 Sheer futility, Qoheleth says, everything is futile.
9 Além de ser sábio, o Eclesiastes ensinou a ciência ao povo. Ele pesou e perscrutou; dispôs numerosas máximas.	9 Besides being a sage, Qoheleth taught the people what he himself knew, having weighed, studied andemended many proverbs.
10 O Eclesiastes aplicou-se à procura de sentenças agradáveis e a redigir com exatidão adágios verídicos.	10 Qoheleth took pains to write in an attractive style and by it to convey truths.
11 As palavras dos sábios são semelhantes a aguilhões; as sentenças, reunidas em coleção, são parecidas a estacas plantadas, inspiradas por um só pastor.	11 The sayings of a sage are like goads, like pegs positioned by shepherds: the same shepherd finds ause for both.
12 De resto, meu filho, quanto a maior número de palavras que estas, fica sabendo que se podem multiplicar os livros a não mais acabar, e que muito estudo se torna uma fadiga para o corpo.	12 Furthermore, my child, you must realise that writing books involves endless hard work, and that muchstudy wearies the body.
13 Em conclusão: tudo bem entendido, teme a Deus e observa seus preceitos, é este o dever de todo homem.	13 To sum up the whole matter: fear God and keep his commandments, for that is the duty of everyone.
14 Deus fará prestar contas de tudo o que está oculto, todo ato, seja ele bom ou mau.	14 For God wil cal al our deeds to judgement, all that is hidden, be it good or bad.
