Primo libro di Samuele 8

LA SACRA BIBBIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Samuele, quando diventò vecchio, costituì i suoi figli giudici d'Israele.	1 When Samuel grew old, he appointed his sons as judges of Israel.
2 Il primogenito si chiamava Ioèl, il secondo Abià; facevano da giudici a Bersabea.	2 His eldest son was cal ed Joel and his second one, Abijah; they were judges at Beersheba.
3 Ma i suoi figli non camminavano sulle sue orme, deviavano dietro il lucro, accettavano doni e deformavano il giudizio.	3 His sons did not fol ow his example but, seduced by the love of money, took bribes and gave biasedverdicts.
4 Allora si radunarono tutti gli anziani d'Israele, andarono da Samuele a Rama,	4 The elders of Israel all assembled, went back to Samuel at Ramah, and said,
5 e gli dissero: "Ecco, tu ormai sei vecchio e i tuoi figli non camminano sulle tue orme. Ora stabilisci su di noi un re, che ci governi, come fanno gli altri popoli".	5 'Look, you are old, and your sons are not fol owing your example. So give us a king to judge us, like theother nations.'
6 Questa cosa dispiacque a Samuele, perché avevano detto: "Dacci un re che ci governi". Perciò Samuele implorò il Signore.	6 Samuel thought that it was wrong of them to say, 'Let us have a king to judge us,' so he prayed toYahweh.
7 Il Signore rispose a Samuele: "Ascolta la voce del popolo in tutto quello che ti hanno detto, perché non hanno rigettato te, ma hanno rigettato me, perché non regni più su di essi.	7 But Yahweh said to Samuel, 'Obey the voice of the people in al that they say to you: it is not you theyhave rejected
8 Secondo il comportamento costante che hanno tenuto dal giorno in cui io li trassi fuori dall'Egitto fino al giorno d'oggi abbandonando me per servire altri dèi, così agiscono nei tuoi confronti.	8 but me, not wishing me to reign over them any more. They are now doing to you exactly what they havedone to me since the day I brought them out of Egypt until now, deserting me and serving other gods.
9 Ma ora ascolta la loro voce. Però fa' loro una dichiarazione e annunzia loro il diritto del re che regnerà su di essi".	9 So, do what they ask; only, you must give them a solemn warning, and must tell them what the kingwho is to reign over them will do.'
10 Samuele riferì tutte le parole del Signore al popolo che gli aveva chiesto un re.	10 Everything that Yahweh had said, Samuel then repeated to the people who were asking him for aking.
11 Disse: "Questo sarà il diritto del re che regnerà su di voi: si prenderà i vostri figli per preporli ai suoi carri e ai suoi cavalli, perché corrano davanti al suo cocchio;	11 He said, 'This is what the king who is to reign over you wil do. He wil take your sons and direct themto his chariotry and cavalry, and they wil run in front of his chariot.
12 per costituirli capi di mille e capi di cinquanta, per arare la sua campagna, per mietere la sua messe, per fabbricare le sue armi da guerra e gli attrezzi dei suoi carri.	12 He wil use them as leaders of a thousand and leaders of fifty; he wil make them plough his fields andgather in his harvest and make his weapons of war and the gear for his chariots.
13 Prenderà anche le vostre figlie come profumiere, cuoche e fornaie.	13 He wil take your daughters as perfumers, cooks and bakers.
14 Prenderà pure i vostri campi, le vostre vigne e i vostri oliveti migliori e li darà ai suoi ministri;	14 He wil take the best of your fields, your vineyards and your olive groves and give them to his officials.
15 prenderà la decima parte delle vostre sementi e delle vostre vigne e le darà ai suoi eunuchi e ai suoi ministri.	15 He wil tithe your crops and vineyards to provide for his courtiers and his officials.
16 Prenderà inoltre i vostri servi e le vostre serve, i vostri giovani migliori, così pure i vostri asini e li destinerà ai suoi lavori.	16 He wil take the best of your servants, men and women, of your oxen and your donkeys, and makethem work for him.
17 Prenderà la decima parte delle vostre greggi e voi stessi diventerete suoi schiavi.	17 He wil tithe your flocks, and you yourselves wil become his slaves.
18 Voi manderete grida in quel giorno di fronte al vostro re che vi siete scelti, ma il Signore non vi risponderà".	18 When that day comes, you wil cry aloud because of the king you have chosen for yourselves, but onthat day Yahweh wil not hear you.'
19 Il popolo non volle dare ascolto alla voce di Samuele e disse: "No! Ma un re sarà sopra di noi!	19 The people, however, refused to listen to Samuel. They said, 'No! We are determined to have a king,
20 Così saremo anche noi come tutte le nazioni: il nostro re ci governerà; uscirà alla nostra testa e combatterà le nostre battaglie".	20 so that we can be like the other nations, with our own king to rule us and lead us and fight our battles.'
21 Samuele ascoltò tutte le parole del popolo e le riferì al Signore.	21 Samuel listened to al that the people had to say and repeated it in Yahweh's ear.
22 Il Signore rispose a Samuele: "Ascolta la loro voce e fa' regnare un re su di loro". Allora Samuele disse agli uomini d'Israele: "Ognuno ritorni alla sua città!".	22 Yahweh then said to Samuel, 'Do as they ask and give them a king.' Samuel then said to theIsraelites, 'Go home, each of you, to his own town.'
