Lettera agli Efesini 5

LA SACRA BIBBIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Imitate Dio, come figli diletti,	1 As God's dear children, then, take him as your pattern,
2 e camminate nell'amore sull'esempio del Cristo che vi ha amato e ha offerto se stesso per noi, oblazione e sacrificio di soave odore a Dio.	2 and fol ow Christ by loving as he loved you, giving himself up for us as an offering and a sweet-smel ingsacrifice to God.
3 Come si conviene tra santi, non si sentano nominare tra voi fornicazione e qualsiasi impurità o cupidigia,	3 Among you there must be not even a mention of sexual vice or impurity in any of its forms, or greed:this would scarcely become the holy people of God!
4 né oscenità, discorsi frivoli o facezie grasse, tutte cose indecenti, ma piuttosto parole di ringraziamento.	4 There must be no foul or salacious talk or coarse jokes -- al this is wrong for you; there should ratherbe thanksgiving.
5 Infatti voi lo sapete: nessun fornicatore o depravato o avaro, cioè idolatra, ha parte nel regno del Cristo e di Dio.	5 For you can be quite certain that nobody who indulges in sexual immorality or impurity or greed -- whichis worshipping a false god -- can inherit the kingdom of God.
6 Nessuno vi inganni con discorsi insipienti: proprio a causa di questi disordini piomba l'ira di Dio sugli uomini ribelli.	6 Do not let anyone deceive you with empty arguments: it is such behaviour that draws down God'sretribution on those who rebel against him.
7 Quindi non associatevi a loro.	7 Make sure that you do not throw in your lot with them.
8 Eravate infatti tenebre, ma ora siete luce nel Signore: comportatevi da figli della luce --	8 You were darkness once, but now you are light in the Lord; behave as children of light,
9 il frutto della luce è ogni sorta di bontà, di giustizia e di sincerità --	9 for the effects of the light are seen in complete goodness and uprightness and truth.
10 scegliendo ciò che Dio gradisce.	10 Try to discover what the Lord wants of you,
11 Non prendete parte alle attività infruttuose delle tenebre, ma piuttosto riprovatele,	11 take no part in the futile works of darkness but, on the contrary, show them up for what they are.
12 perché quanto essi fanno in segreto è vergognoso persino a parlarne;	12 The things which are done in secret are shameful even to speak of;
13 ma tutto ciò che è riprovato, viene manifestato dalla luce;	13 but anything shown up by the light wil be il uminated
14 infatti quanto è manifestato è luce. Per questo si dice: Svégliati, tu che dormi, risorgi dai morti e Cristo su te risplenderà.	14 and anything illuminated is itself a light. That is why it is said: Wake up, sleeper, rise from the dead,and Christ wil shine on you.
15 Considerate dunque attentamente il vostro modo di comportarvi, non da stolti, ma da uomini saggi,	15 So be very careful about the sort of lives you lead, like intel igent and not like senseless people.
16 che colgono le occasioni opportune, perché i giorni sono malvagi.	16 Make the best of the present time, for it is a wicked age.
17 Non siate quindi sconsiderati, ma cercate di capire quale sia la volontà del Signore;	17 This is why you must not be thoughtless but must recognise what is the will of the Lord.
18 non ubriacatevi di vino, che è occasione di sregolatezze; lasciatevi invece riempire di Spirito,	18 Do not get drunk with wine; this is simply dissipation; be fil ed with the Spirit.
19 intrattenendovi tra voi con salmi, inni e canti ispirati, cantando e salmeggiando nel vostro cuore al Signore,	19 Sing psalms and hymns and inspired songs among yourselves, singing and chanting to the Lord inyour hearts,
20 ringraziando sempre per tutti il Dio e Padre nel nome del Signore nostro Gesù Cristo.	20 always and everywhere giving thanks to God who is our Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
21 Siate soggetti gli uni agli altri nel timore di Cristo.	21 Be subject to one another out of reverence for Christ.
22 Le donne siano soggette ai loro mariti come al Signore,	22 Wives should be subject to their husbands as to the Lord,
23 poiché l'uomo è capo della donna come anche il Cristo è capo della chiesa, lui, il salvatore del corpo.	23 since, as Christ is head of the Church and saves the whole body, so is a husband the head of his wife;
24 Ora come la chiesa è soggetta al Cristo, così anche le donne ai loro mariti in tutto.	24 and as the Church is subject to Christ, so should wives be to their husbands, in everything.
25 Mariti, amate le (vostre) mogli come il Cristo ha amato la chiesa e si è offerto per lei,	25 Husbands should love their wives, just as Christ loved the Church and sacrificed himself for her
26 per santificarla, purificandola col lavacro dell'acqua unito alla parola,	26 to make her holy by washing her in cleansing water with a form of words,
27 e avere accanto a sé questa chiesa gloriosa, senza macchia o ruga o alcunché di simile, ma santa e irreprensibile.	27 so that when he took the Church to himself she would be glorious, with no speck or wrinkle or anything like that, but holy and faultless.
28 Allo stesso modo i mariti devono amare le loro mogli, come i loro propri corpi. Chi ama la propria moglie, ama se stesso:	28 In the same way, husbands must love their wives as they love their own bodies; for a man to love hiswife is for him to love himself.
29 infatti nessuno mai ha odiato la propria carne; al contrario la nutre e la tratta con cura, come anche il Cristo la sua chiesa,	29 A man never hates his own body, but he feeds it and looks after it; and that is the way Christ treats theChurch,
30 poiché siamo membra del suo corpo.	30 because we are parts of his Body.
31 Per questo l'uomo lascerà il padre e la madre e si unirà alla sua donna e i due formeranno una sola carne.	31 This is why a man leaves his father and mother and becomes attached to his wife, and the twobecome one flesh.
32 Questo mistero è grande: io lo dico riferendomi al Cristo e alla chiesa.	32 This mystery has great significance, but I am applying it to Christ and the Church.
33 In ogni caso, anche ciascuno di voi ami la propria moglie come se stesso, e la moglie rispetti il marito.	33 To sum up: you also, each one of you, must love his wife as he loves himself; and let every wiferespect her husband.
