CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINVULGATA
“Pay attention, lest you perform your justice before men, in order to be seen by them; otherwise you shall not have a reward with your Father, who is in heaven.1 Attendite ne justitiam vestram faciatis coram hominibus, ut videamini ab eis : alioquin mercedem non habebitis apud Patrem vestrum qui in cælis est.
Therefore, when you give alms, do not choose to sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the towns, so that they may be honored by men. Amen I say to you, they have received their reward.2 Cum ergo facis eleemosynam, noli tuba canere ante te, sicut hypocritæ faciunt in synagogis, et in vicis, ut honorificentur ab hominibus. Amen dico vobis, receperunt mercedem suam.
But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,3 Te autem faciente eleemosynam, nesciat sinistra tua quid faciat dextera tua :
so that your almsgiving may be in secret, and your Father, who sees in secret, will repay you.4 ut sit eleemosyna tua in abscondito, et Pater tuus, qui videt in abscondito, reddet tibi.
And when you pray, you should not be like the hypocrites, who love standing in the synagogues and at the corners of the streets to pray, so that they may be seen by men. Amen I say to you, they have received their reward.5 Et cum oratis, non eritis sicut hypocritæ qui amant in synagogis et in angulis platearum stantes orare, ut videantur ab hominibus : amen dico vobis, receperunt mercedem suam.
But you, when you pray, enter into your room, and having shut the door, pray to your Father in secret, and your Father, who sees in secret, will repay you.6 Tu autem cum oraveris, intra in cubiculum tuum, et clauso ostio, ora Patrem tuum in abscondito : et Pater tuus, qui videt in abscondito, reddet tibi.
And when praying, do not choose many words, as the pagans do. For they think that by their excess of words they might be heeded.7 Orantes autem, nolite multum loqui, sicut ethnici, putant enim quod in multiloquio suo exaudiantur.
Therefore, do not choose to imitate them. For your Father knows what your needs may be, even before you ask him.8 Nolite ergo assimilari eis : scit enim Pater vester, quid opus sit vobis, antequam petatis eum.
Therefore, you shall pray in this way: Our Father, who is in heaven: May your name be kept holy.9 Sic ergo vos orabitis : Pater noster, qui es in cælis,
sanctificetur nomen tuum.
May your kingdom come. May your will be done, as in heaven, so also on earth.10 Adveniat regnum tuum ;
fiat voluntas tua, sicut in cælo et in terra.
Give us this day our life-sustaining bread.11 Panem nostrum supersubstantialem da nobis hodie,
And forgive us our debts, as we also forgive our debtors.12 et dimitte nobis debita nostra,
sicut et nos dimittimus debitoribus nostris.
And lead us not into temptation. But free us from evil. Amen.13 Et ne nos inducas in tentationem,
sed libera nos a malo. Amen.
For if you will forgive men their sins, your heavenly Father also will forgive you your offenses.14 Si enim dimiseritis hominibus peccata eorum : dimittet et vobis Pater vester cælestis delicta vestra.
But if you will not forgive men, neither will your Father forgive you your sins.15 Si autem non dimiseritis hominibus : nec Pater vester dimittet vobis peccata vestra.
And when you fast, do not choose to become gloomy, like the hypocrites. For they alter their faces, so that their fasting may be apparent to men. Amen I say to you, that they have received their reward.16 Cum autem jejunatis, nolite fieri sicut hypocritæ, tristes. Exterminant enim facies suas, ut appareant hominibus jejunantes. Amen dico vobis, quia receperunt mercedem suam.
But as for you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face,17 Tu autem, cum jejunas, unge caput tuum, et faciem tuam lava,
so that your fasting will not be apparent to men, but to your Father, who is in secret. And your Father, who sees in secret, will repay you.18 ne videaris hominibus jejunans, sed Patri tuo, qui est in abscondito : et Pater tuus, qui videt in abscondito, reddet tibi.
Do not choose to store up for yourselves treasures on earth: where rust and moth consume, and where thieves break in and steal.19 Nolite thesaurizare vobis thesauros in terra : ubi ærugo, et tinea demolitur : et ubi fures effodiunt, et furantur.
Instead, store up for yourselves treasures in heaven: where neither rust nor moth consumes, and where thieves do not break in and steal.20 Thesaurizate autem vobis thesauros in cælo, ubi neque ærugo, neque tinea demolitur, et ubi fures non effodiunt, nec furantur.
For where your treasure is, there also is your heart.21 Ubi enim est thesaurus tuus, ibi est et cor tuum.
The lamp of your body is your eye. If your eye is wholesome, your entire body will be filled with light.22 Lucerna corporis tui est oculus tuus. Si oculus tuus fuerit simplex, totum corpus tuum lucidum erit.
But if your eye has been corrupted, your entire body will be darkened. If then the light that is in you is darkness, how great will that darkness be!23 Si autem oculus tuus fuerit nequam, totum corpus tuum tenebrosum erit. Si ergo lumen, quod in te est, tenebræ sunt : ipsæ tenebræ quantæ erunt ?
No one is able to serve two masters. For either he will have hatred for the one, and love the other, or he will persevere with the one, and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.24 Nemo potest duobus dominis servire : aut enim unum odio habebit, et alterum diliget : aut unum sustinebit, et alterum contemnet. Non potestis Deo servire et mammonæ.
And so I say to you, do not be anxious about your life, as to what you will eat, nor about your body, as to what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?25 Ideo dico vobis, ne solliciti sitis animæ vestræ quid manducetis, neque corpori vestro quid induamini. Nonne anima plus est quam esca, et corpus plus quam vestimentum ?
Consider the birds of the air, how they neither sow, nor reap, nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of much greater value than they are?26 Respicite volatilia cæli, quoniam non serunt, neque metunt, neque congregant in horrea : et Pater vester cælestis pascit illa. Nonne vos magis pluris estis illis ?
And which of you, by thinking, is able to add one cubit to his stature?27 Quis autem vestrum cogitans potest adjicere ad staturam suam cubitum unum ?
And as for clothing, why are you anxious? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither work nor weave.28 Et de vestimento quid solliciti estis ? Considerate lilia agri quomodo crescunt : non laborant, neque nent.
But I say to you, that not even Solomon, in all his glory, was arrayed like one of these.29 Dico autem vobis, quoniam nec Salomon in omni gloria sua coopertus est sicut unum ex istis.
So if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is here today, and cast into the oven tomorrow, how much more will he care for you, O little in faith?30 Si autem fœnum agri, quod hodie est, et cras in clibanum mittitur, Deus sic vestit, quanto magis vos modicæ fidei ?
Therefore, do not choose to be anxious, saying: ‘What shall we eat, and what shall we drink, and with what shall we be clothed?’31 Nolite ergo solliciti esse, dicentes : Quid manducabimus, aut quid bibemus, aut quo operiemur ?
For the Gentiles seek all these things. Yet your Father knows that you need all these things.32 hæc enim omnia gentes inquirunt. Scit enim Pater vester, quia his omnibus indigetis.
Therefore, seek first the kingdom of God and his justice, and all these things shall be added to you as well.33 Quærite ergo primum regnum Dei, et justitiam ejus : et hæc omnia adjicientur vobis.
Therefore, do not be anxious about tomorrow; for the future day will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its evil.”34 Nolite ergo solliciti esse in crastinum. Crastinus enim dies sollicitus erit sibi ipsi : sufficit diei malitia sua.
