CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINJERUSALEM
The words of the Gatherer, the son of the Vomiter. The vision that the man spoke. God is with him, and he, being strengthened by God and abiding with him, said:1 Paroles d'Agur, fils de Yaqé, de Massa. Oracle de cet homme pour Itéel, pour Itéel et pour Ukal.
“I am the most foolish among men, and the wisdom of men is not with me.2 Oui, je suis le plus stupide des hommes, sans aucune intelligence humaine,
I have not learned wisdom, and I have not known the knowledge of sanctity.3 je n'ai pas appris la sagesse et j'ignore la science des saints.
Who has ascended to heaven and also descended? Who has grasped the wind in his hands? Who has tied the waters together, as with a garment? Who has raised all the limits of the earth? What is his name, and what is the name of his son, if you know?4 Qui est monté au ciel et puis en est descendu? Qui dans ses poings a recueilli le vent? Qui dansson manteau a serré les eaux? Qui a affermi toutes les extrémités de la terre? Quel est son nom? Quel est le nomde son fils, si tu le sais?
Every word of God is fire-tested. He is a bronze shield to those who hope in him.5 Toute parole de Dieu est éprouvée, il est un bouclier pour qui s'abrite en lui.
Do not add anything to his words, lest you be reproved and be discovered to be a liar.6 A ses discours n'ajoute rien, de crainte qu'il ne te reprenne et ne te tienne pour un menteur.
Two things I have asked of you; do not deny them to me before I die.7 J'implore de toi deux choses, ne les refuse pas avant que je meure:
Remove, far from me, vanity and lying words. Give me neither begging, nor wealth. Apportion to me only the necessities of my life,8 éloigne de moi fausseté et paroles mensongères, ne me donne ni pauvreté ni richesse, laisse-moigoûter ma part de pain,
lest perhaps, being filled, I might be enticed into denial, and say: ‘Who is the Lord?’ Or, being compelled by destitution, I might steal, and then perjure myself in the name of my God.9 de crainte que, comblé, je ne me détourne et ne dise: "Qui est Yahvé?"
There is a generation which curses their father, and which does not bless their mother.11 Engeance qui maudit son père et ne bénit pas sa mère,
There is a generation which seems pure to themselves, and yet they are not even washed from their filthiness.12 engeance pure à ses propres yeux, mais dont la souillure n'est pas effacée,
There is a generation, whose eyes have been elevated, and their eyelids are lifted on high.13 engeance aux regards altiers et aux paupières hautaines,
There is a generation which has swords in place of teeth, and which commands their molars to devour the indigent from the earth and the poor from among men.14 engeance dont les dents sont des épées, les mâchoires, des couteaux, pour dévorer les pauvreset les retrancher du pays, et les malheureux, d'entre les hommes.
The leech has two daughters, who say, ‘Bring, bring.’ Three things are insatiable, and a fourth never says ‘Enough’:15 La sangsue a deux filles: "Apporte! Apporte!" Il y a trois choses insatiables et quatre qui jamaisne disent: "Assez!:"
Hell, and the mouth of the womb, and a land that is not filled with water. And truly, fire never says, ‘Enough.’16 le shéol, le sein stérile, la terre que l'eau ne peut rassasier, le feu qui jamais ne dit: "Assez!"
The eye of one who mocks his father and who despises the childbearing of his mother, let the ravens of the torrent tear it out, and let the sons of the eagles consume it.17 L'oeil qui nargue un père et méprise l'obéissance due à une mère, les corbeaux du torrent lecrèveront, les aigles le dévoreront.
Three things are difficult for me, and about a fourth, I am nearly ignorant:18 Il est trois choses qui me dépassent et quatre que je ne connais pas:
the way of an eagle in the sky, the way of a serpent on a rock, the way of a ship in the middle of the sea, and the way of a man in adolescence.19 le chemin de l'aigle dans les cieux, le chemin du serpent sur le rocher, le chemin du vaisseau enhaute mer, le chemin de l'homme chez la jeune femme.
Such is the way also of an adulterous woman, who eats, and wiping her mouth, says: “I have done no evil.”20 Telle est la conduite de la femme adultère: elle mange, puis s'essuie la bouche en disant: "Jen'ai rien fait de mal!"
By three things, the earth is moved, and a fourth it is not able to sustain:21 Sous trois choses tremble la terre et il en est quatre qu'elle ne peut porter:
by a slave when he reigns, by the foolish when he has been filled with food,22 un esclave qui devient roi, une brute gorgée de nourriture,
by a hateful woman when she has been taken in matrimony, and by a handmaid when she has been heir to her mistress.23 une fille odieuse qui vient à se marier, une servante qui hérite de sa maîtresse.
Four things are least upon the earth, and they are wiser than the wise:24 Il est quatre êtres minuscules sur la terre, mais sages entre les sages:
the ants, an infirm people who provide food for themselves at the harvest,25 les fourmis, peuple chétif, mais qui, en été, assure sa provende;
the rabbit, a sickened people who make their bed upon the rock.26 les damans, peuple sans vigueur, mais qui gîtent dans les rochers;
The locust has no king, but they all depart by their troops.27 chez les sauterelles, point de roi! mais elles marchent toutes en bon ordre;
The lizard supports itself on hands and dwells in the buildings of kings.28 le lézard que l'on capture à la main, mais qui hante les palais du roi.
There are three things that advance well, and a fourth that marches happily on:29 Trois choses ont une belle allure et quatre une belle démarche:
a lion, the strongest of beasts, who fears nothing that he meets,30 le lion, le plus brave des animaux, qui ne recule devant rien;
a rooster prepared at the loins, likewise a ram, and a king, whom none can resist.31 le coq bien râblé, ou le bouc, et le roi, quand il harangue le peuple.
There is one who has appeared foolish, after he was lifted up on high; for if he had understood, he would have placed his hand over his mouth.32 Si tu fus assez sot pour t'emporter et si tu as réfléchi, mets la main sur ta bouche!
But whoever strongly squeezes the udder to bring out the milk, presses out butter. And whoever violently blows his nose, brings out blood. And whoever provokes wrath, brings forth discord.”33 Car en pressant le lait, on obtient le beurre, en pressant le nez, on obtient le sang, en pressant lacolère, on obtient la querelle.
