CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINEL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
The words of the Gatherer, the son of the Vomiter. The vision that the man spoke. God is with him, and he, being strengthened by God and abiding with him, said:1 Palabras de Agur, hijo de Iaqué, de Masá. Oráculo de este gran hombre: ¡Me he fatigado, Dios, me he fatigado, Dios, y estoy exhausto!
“I am the most foolish among men, and the wisdom of men is not with me.2 Sí, soy demasiado torpe para ser un hombre y no tengo la inteligencia de un ser humano;
I have not learned wisdom, and I have not known the knowledge of sanctity.3 nunca aprendí la sabiduría, ¡y qué puedo saber de la ciencia del Santo!
Who has ascended to heaven and also descended? Who has grasped the wind in his hands? Who has tied the waters together, as with a garment? Who has raised all the limits of the earth? What is his name, and what is the name of his son, if you know?4 ¿Quién subió a los cielos y descendió? ¿Quién recogió el viento en sus puños? ¿Quién contuvo las aguas en su manto? ¿Quién estableció los confines de la tierra? ¿Cuál es su nombre y el nombre de su hijo, si es que lo sabes?
Every word of God is fire-tested. He is a bronze shield to those who hope in him.5 Toda palabra de Dios es acrisolada, Dios es un escudo para el que se refugia en él.
Do not add anything to his words, lest you be reproved and be discovered to be a liar.6 No añadas nada a sus palabras, no sea que te reprenda y seas tenido por mentiroso.
Two things I have asked of you; do not deny them to me before I die.7 Hay dos cosas que yo te pido, no me la niegues antes que muera:
Remove, far from me, vanity and lying words. Give me neither begging, nor wealth. Apportion to me only the necessities of my life,8 aleja de mí la falsedad y la mentira; no me des ni pobreza ni riqueza, dame la ración necesaria,
lest perhaps, being filled, I might be enticed into denial, and say: ‘Who is the Lord?’ Or, being compelled by destitution, I might steal, and then perjure myself in the name of my God.9 no sea que, al sentirme satisfecho, reniegue y diga: «¿Quién es el Señor?», o que, siendo pobre, me ponga a robar y atente contra el nombre de mi Dios.
Do not accuse a servant to his lord, lest he curse you, and you fall.10 No denigres a un servidor delante de su patrón, no sea que él te maldiga y cargues con la culpa.
There is a generation which curses their father, and which does not bless their mother.11 Hay cierta clase de gente que maldice a su padre y no bendice a su madre,
There is a generation which seems pure to themselves, and yet they are not even washed from their filthiness.12 gente que se considera pura y no se ha lavado de su inmundicia.
There is a generation, whose eyes have been elevated, and their eyelids are lifted on high.13 ¡Qué altaneros son los ojos de esa gente, cuánto desdén hay en sus miradas!
There is a generation which has swords in place of teeth, and which commands their molars to devour the indigent from the earth and the poor from among men.14 Sus dientes son espadas y sus mandíbulas, cuchillos, para devorar a los desvalidos de la tierra y a los más pobres entre los hombres.
The leech has two daughters, who say, ‘Bring, bring.’ Three things are insatiable, and a fourth never says ‘Enough’:15 La sanguijuela tiene dos hijas: «¡Dame!» y «¡Dame!». Hay tres cosas insaciables y cuatro que nunca dicen: «¡Basta!».
Hell, and the mouth of the womb, and a land that is not filled with water. And truly, fire never says, ‘Enough.’16 el Abismo y el vientre estéril, la tierra, que no se sacia de agua, y el fuego, que nunca dice: «¡Basta!».
The eye of one who mocks his father and who despises the childbearing of his mother, let the ravens of the torrent tear it out, and let the sons of the eagles consume it.17 Al ojo que se burla de su padre y desprecia la vejez de su madre, lo vaciarán los cuervos del torrente y lo devorarán los aguiluchos.
Three things are difficult for me, and about a fourth, I am nearly ignorant:18 Hay tres cosas que me superan y cuatro que no comprendo:
the way of an eagle in the sky, the way of a serpent on a rock, the way of a ship in the middle of the sea, and the way of a man in adolescence.19 el camino del águila en el cielo, el camino de la serpiente sobre la roca, el camino del hombre en una joven.
Such is the way also of an adulterous woman, who eats, and wiping her mouth, says: “I have done no evil.”20 Esta es la conducta de la mujer adúltera: come, se limpia la boca y exclama: «¡No hice nada malo!».
By three things, the earth is moved, and a fourth it is not able to sustain:21 Por tres cosas tiembla la tierra y hay cuatro que no puede soportar:
by a slave when he reigns, by the foolish when he has been filled with food,22 un esclavo que llega a rey, un tonto que se harta de pan,
by a hateful woman when she has been taken in matrimony, and by a handmaid when she has been heir to her mistress.23 una mujer odiada que encuentra marido y una esclava que hereda a su señora.
Four things are least upon the earth, and they are wiser than the wise:24 Hay cuatro seres, lo más pequeños de la tierra, que son sabios entre los sabios:
the ants, an infirm people who provide food for themselves at the harvest,25 las hormigas, pueblo sin fuerza, que aseguran sus provisiones en verano;
the rabbit, a sickened people who make their bed upon the rock.26 los damanes, pueblo sin poder, que instalan sus casa en la roca;
The locust has no king, but they all depart by their troops.27 las langostas, que no tienen rey, pero avanzan todas en escuadrones;
The lizard supports itself on hands and dwells in the buildings of kings.28 la lagartija, que puedes agarrar con la mano, pero habita en los palacios de los reyes.
There are three things that advance well, and a fourth that marches happily on:29 Hay tres cosas de paso majestuoso y cuatro que caminan con elegancia:
a lion, the strongest of beasts, who fears nothing that he meets,30 el león, el más fuerte entre los animales, que no retrocede ante nada;
a rooster prepared at the loins, likewise a ram, and a king, whom none can resist.31 el gallo vigoroso, o el chivo, y el rey al frente de su regimiento.
There is one who has appeared foolish, after he was lifted up on high; for if he had understood, he would have placed his hand over his mouth.32 Si fuiste tan tonto que te exaltaste a ti mismo y luego reflexionaste, tápate bien la boca,
But whoever strongly squeezes the udder to bring out the milk, presses out butter. And whoever violently blows his nose, brings out blood. And whoever provokes wrath, brings forth discord.”33 porque apretando la leche se saca manteca, apretando la nariz se saca sangre y apretando la ira se saca una disputa.
