After two years, Pharaoh saw a dream. He thought himself to be standing above a river,1 εγενετο δε μετα δυο ετη ημερων φαραω ειδεν ενυπνιον ωετο εσταναι επι του ποταμου
from which ascended seven cows, exceedingly beautiful and stout. And they pastured in marshy places.2 και ιδου ωσπερ εκ του ποταμου ανεβαινον επτα βοες καλαι τω ειδει και εκλεκται ταις σαρξιν και εβοσκοντο εν τω αχει
Likewise, another seven emerged from the river, filthy and thoroughly emaciated. And they pastured on the same bank of the river, in green places.3 αλλαι δε επτα βοες ανεβαινον μετα ταυτας εκ του ποταμου αισχραι τω ειδει και λεπται ταις σαρξιν και ενεμοντο παρα τας βοας παρα το χειλος του ποταμου
And they devoured those whose appearance and condition of body was so wonderful. Pharaoh, having been awakened,4 και κατεφαγον αι επτα βοες αι αισχραι και λεπται ταις σαρξιν τας επτα βοας τας καλας τω ειδει και τας εκλεκτας ηγερθη δε φαραω
slept again, and he saw another dream. Seven ears of grain sprung up on one stalk, full and well-formed.5 και ενυπνιασθη το δευτερον και ιδου επτα σταχυες ανεβαινον εν πυθμενι ενι εκλεκτοι και καλοι
Likewise, other ears of grain, of the same number, rose up, thin and struck with blight,6 αλλοι δε επτα σταχυες λεπτοι και ανεμοφθοροι ανεφυοντο μετ' αυτους
devouring all the beauty of the first. Pharaoh, when he awakened after his rest,7 και κατεπιον οι επτα σταχυες οι λεπτοι και ανεμοφθοροι τους επτα σταχυας τους εκλεκτους και τους πληρεις ηγερθη δε φαραω και ην ενυπνιον
and when morning arrived, being terrified with fear, sent to all the interpreters of Egypt and to all of the wise men. And when they were summoned, he explained to them his dream; but there was no one who could interpret it.8 εγενετο δε πρωι και εταραχθη η ψυχη αυτου και αποστειλας εκαλεσεν παντας τους εξηγητας αιγυπτου και παντας τους σοφους αυτης και διηγησατο αυτοις φαραω το ενυπνιον και ουκ ην ο απαγγελλων αυτο τω φαραω
Then at last the chief cupbearer, remembering, said, “I confess my sin.9 και ελαλησεν ο αρχιοινοχοος προς φαραω λεγων την αμαρτιαν μου αναμιμνησκω σημερον
The king, being angry with his servants, ordered me and the chief miller of grain to be forced into the prison of the leader of the military.10 φαραω ωργισθη τοις παισιν αυτου και εθετο ημας εν φυλακη εν τω οικω του αρχιμαγειρου εμε τε και τον αρχισιτοποιον
There, in one night, both of us saw a dream presaging the future.11 και ειδομεν ενυπνιον εν νυκτι μια εγω τε και αυτος εκαστος κατα το αυτου ενυπνιον ειδομεν
In that place, there was a Hebrew, a servant of the same commander of the military, to whom we explained our dreams.12 ην δε εκει μεθ' ημων νεανισκος παις εβραιος του αρχιμαγειρου και διηγησαμεθα αυτω και συνεκρινεν ημιν
Whatever we heard was proven afterwards by the event of the matter. For I was restored to my office, and he was suspended on a cross.”13 εγενηθη δε καθως συνεκρινεν ημιν ουτως και συνεβη εμε τε αποκατασταθηναι επι την αρχην μου εκεινον δε κρεμασθηναι
Immediately, by the king’s authority, Joseph was led out of prison, and they shaved him. And changing his apparel, they presented him to him.14 αποστειλας δε φαραω εκαλεσεν τον ιωσηφ και εξηγαγον αυτον εκ του οχυρωματος και εξυρησαν αυτον και ηλλαξαν την στολην αυτου και ηλθεν προς φαραω
And he said to him, “I have seen dreams, and there is no one who can unfold them. I have heard that you are very wise at interpreting these.”15 ειπεν δε φαραω τω ιωσηφ ενυπνιον εωρακα και ο συγκρινων ουκ εστιν αυτο εγω δε ακηκοα περι σου λεγοντων ακουσαντα σε ενυπνια συγκριναι αυτα
Joseph responded, “Apart from me, God will respond favorably to Pharaoh.”16 αποκριθεις δε ιωσηφ τω φαραω ειπεν ανευ του θεου ουκ αποκριθησεται το σωτηριον φαραω
Therefore, Pharaoh explained what he had seen: “I thought myself to be standing on the bank of a river,17 ελαλησεν δε φαραω τω ιωσηφ λεγων εν τω υπνω μου ωμην εσταναι παρα το χειλος του ποταμου
and seven cows climbed up from the river, exceedingly beautiful and full of flesh. And they grazed in a pasture of a marshy greenery.18 και ωσπερ εκ του ποταμου ανεβαινον επτα βοες καλαι τω ειδει και εκλεκται ταις σαρξιν και ενεμοντο εν τω αχει
And behold, there followed after these, another seven cows, with such deformity and emaciation as I had never seen in the land of Egypt.19 και ιδου επτα βοες ετεραι ανεβαινον οπισω αυτων εκ του ποταμου πονηραι και αισχραι τω ειδει και λεπται ταις σαρξιν οιας ουκ ειδον τοιαυτας εν ολη γη αιγυπτω αισχροτερας
These devoured and consumed the first,20 και κατεφαγον αι επτα βοες αι αισχραι και λεπται τας επτα βοας τας πρωτας τας καλας και εκλεκτας
giving no indication of being full. But they remained in the same state of emaciation and squalor. Awakening, but being weighed down into sleep again,21 και εισηλθον εις τας κοιλιας αυτων και ου διαδηλοι εγενοντο οτι εισηλθον εις τας κοιλιας αυτων και αι οψεις αυτων αισχραι καθα και την αρχην εξεγερθεις δε εκοιμηθην
I saw a dream. Seven ears of grain sprang up on one stalk, full and very beautiful.22 και ειδον παλιν εν τω υπνω μου και ωσπερ επτα σταχυες ανεβαινον εν πυθμενι ενι πληρεις και καλοι
Likewise, another seven, thin and struck with blight, rose up from the stalk.23 αλλοι δε επτα σταχυες λεπτοι και ανεμοφθοροι ανεφυοντο εχομενοι αυτων
And they devoured the beauty of the first. I explained this dream to the interpreters, and there is no one who can unfold it.”24 και κατεπιον οι επτα σταχυες οι λεπτοι και ανεμοφθοροι τους επτα σταχυας τους καλους και τους πληρεις ειπα ουν τοις εξηγηταις και ουκ ην ο απαγγελλων μοι
Joseph responded: “The dream of the king is one. What God will do, he has revealed to Pharaoh.25 και ειπεν ιωσηφ τω φαραω το ενυπνιον φαραω εν εστιν οσα ο θεος ποιει εδειξεν τω φαραω
The seven beautiful cows, and the seven full ears of grain, are seven years of abundance. And so the force of the dreams is understood to be the same.26 αι επτα βοες αι καλαι επτα ετη εστιν και οι επτα σταχυες οι καλοι επτα ετη εστιν το ενυπνιον φαραω εν εστιν
Likewise, the seven thin and emaciated cows, which ascended after them, and the seven thin ears of grain, which were struck with the burning wind, are seven approaching years of famine.27 και αι επτα βοες αι λεπται αι αναβαινουσαι οπισω αυτων επτα ετη εστιν και οι επτα σταχυες οι λεπτοι και ανεμοφθοροι εσονται επτα ετη λιμου
These will be fulfilled in this order.28 το δε ρημα ο ειρηκα φαραω οσα ο θεος ποιει εδειξεν τω φαραω
Behold, there will arrive seven years of great fertility throughout the entire land of Egypt.29 ιδου επτα ετη ερχεται ευθηνια πολλη εν παση γη αιγυπτω
After this, there will follow another seven years, of such great barrenness that all the former abundance will be delivered into oblivion. For the famine will consume all the land,30 ηξει δε επτα ετη λιμου μετα ταυτα και επιλησονται της πλησμονης εν ολη γη αιγυπτω και αναλωσει ο λιμος την γην
and the greatness of this destitution will cause the greatness of the abundance to be lost.31 και ουκ επιγνωσθησεται η ευθηνια επι της γης απο του λιμου του εσομενου μετα ταυτα ισχυρος γαρ εσται σφοδρα
Now, as to what you saw the second time, it is a dream pertaining to the same thing. It is an indication of its firmness, because the word of God shall be done, and it shall be completed swiftly.32 περι δε του δευτερωσαι το ενυπνιον φαραω δις οτι αληθες εσται το ρημα το παρα του θεου και ταχυνει ο θεος του ποιησαι αυτο
Now therefore, let the king provide a wise and industrious man, and place him over the land of Egypt,33 νυν ουν σκεψαι ανθρωπον φρονιμον και συνετον και καταστησον αυτον επι γης αιγυπτου
so that he may appoint overseers throughout all the regions. And let a fifth part of the fruits, throughout the seven fertile years34 και ποιησατω φαραω και καταστησατω τοπαρχας επι της γης και αποπεμπτωσατωσαν παντα τα γενηματα της γης αιγυπτου των επτα ετων της ευθηνιας
that now have already begun to occur, be gathered into storehouses. And let all the grain be stored away, under the power of Pharaoh, and let it be kept in the cities.35 και συναγαγετωσαν παντα τα βρωματα των επτα ετων των ερχομενων των καλων τουτων και συναχθητω ο σιτος υπο χειρα φαραω βρωματα εν ταις πολεσιν φυλαχθητω
And let it be prepared for the future famine of seven years, which will oppress Egypt, and then the land will not be consumed by destitution.”36 και εσται τα βρωματα πεφυλαγμενα τη γη εις τα επτα ετη του λιμου α εσονται εν γη αιγυπτω και ουκ εκτριβησεται η γη εν τω λιμω
The counsel pleased Pharaoh and all his ministers.37 ηρεσεν δε τα ρηματα εναντιον φαραω και εναντιον παντων των παιδων αυτου
And he said to them, “Would we be able to find another such man, who is full of the Spirit of God?”38 και ειπεν φαραω πασιν τοις παισιν αυτου μη ευρησομεν ανθρωπον τοιουτον ος εχει πνευμα θεου εν αυτω
Therefore, he said to Joseph: “Because God has revealed to you all that you have said, would I be able to find anyone wiser and as much like you?39 ειπεν δε φαραω τω ιωσηφ επειδη εδειξεν ο θεος σοι παντα ταυτα ουκ εστιν ανθρωπος φρονιμωτερος και συνετωτερος σου
You will be over my house, and to the authority of your mouth, all the people will show obedience. Only in one way, in the throne of the kingdom, will I go before you.”40 συ εση επι τω οικω μου και επι τω στοματι σου υπακουσεται πας ο λαος μου πλην τον θρονον υπερεξω σου εγω
And again, Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Behold, I have appointed you over the entire land of Egypt.”41 ειπεν δε φαραω τω ιωσηφ ιδου καθιστημι σε σημερον επι πασης γης αιγυπτου
And he took the ring from his own hand, and he gave it into his hand. And he clothed him with a robe of fine linen, and he placed a necklace of gold around his neck.42 και περιελομενος φαραω τον δακτυλιον απο της χειρος αυτου περιεθηκεν αυτον επι την χειρα ιωσηφ και ενεδυσεν αυτον στολην βυσσινην και περιεθηκεν κλοιον χρυσουν περι τον τραχηλον αυτου
And he caused him to ascend upon his second swift chariot, with the herald proclaiming that everyone should bend their knee before him, and that they should know that he was governor over the entire land of Egypt.43 και ανεβιβασεν αυτον επι το αρμα το δευτερον των αυτου και εκηρυξεν εμπροσθεν αυτου κηρυξ και κατεστησεν αυτον εφ' ολης γης αιγυπτου
Likewise, the king said to Joseph: “I am Pharaoh: apart from your authority, no one will move hand or foot in all the land of Egypt.”44 ειπεν δε φαραω τω ιωσηφ εγω φαραω ανευ σου ουκ εξαρει ουθεις την χειρα αυτου επι παση γη αιγυπτου
And he changed his name and called him, in the Egyptian tongue: ‘Savior of the world.’ And he gave him as a wife, Asenath, the daughter of Potiphera, priest of Heliopolis. And so Joseph went out into the land of Egypt.45 και εκαλεσεν φαραω το ονομα ιωσηφ ψονθομφανηχ και εδωκεν αυτω την ασεννεθ θυγατερα πετεφρη ιερεως ηλιου πολεως αυτω γυναικα
(Now he was thirty years old when he stood in the sight of king Pharaoh.) And he traveled throughout the regions of Egypt.46 ιωσηφ δε ην ετων τριακοντα οτε εστη εναντιον φαραω βασιλεως αιγυπτου εξηλθεν δε ιωσηφ εκ προσωπου φαραω και διηλθεν πασαν γην αιγυπτου
And the fertility of the seven years arrived. And when the grain fields were reduced to sheaves, these were gathered into the storehouses of Egypt.47 και εποιησεν η γη εν τοις επτα ετεσιν της ευθηνιας δραγματα
And now all the abundance of grain was stored away in every city.48 και συνηγαγεν παντα τα βρωματα των επτα ετων εν οις ην η ευθηνια εν γη αιγυπτου και εθηκεν τα βρωματα εν ταις πολεσιν βρωματα των πεδιων της πολεως των κυκλω αυτης εθηκεν εν αυτη
And there was such a great abundance of wheat that it was comparable to the sands of the sea, and its bounty exceeded all measure.49 και συνηγαγεν ιωσηφ σιτον ωσει την αμμον της θαλασσης πολυν σφοδρα εως ουκ ηδυναντο αριθμησαι ου γαρ ην αριθμος
Then, before the famine arrived, Joseph had two sons born, whom Asenath, the daughter of Potiphera, priest of Heliopolis, bore for him.50 τω δε ιωσηφ εγενοντο υιοι δυο προ του ελθειν τα επτα ετη του λιμου ους ετεκεν αυτω ασεννεθ θυγατηρ πετεφρη ιερεως ηλιου πολεως
And he called the name of the firstborn Manasseh, saying, “God has caused me to forget all my labors and the house of my father.”51 εκαλεσεν δε ιωσηφ το ονομα του πρωτοτοκου μανασση οτι επιλαθεσθαι με εποιησεν ο θεος παντων των πονων μου και παντων των του πατρος μου
Likewise, he named the second Ephraim, saying, “God has caused me to increase in the land of my poverty.”52 το δε ονομα του δευτερου εκαλεσεν εφραιμ οτι ηυξησεν με ο θεος εν γη ταπεινωσεως μου
And so, when the seven years of fertility that occurred in Egypt had passed,53 παρηλθον δε τα επτα ετη της ευθηνιας α εγενοντο εν γη αιγυπτω
the seven years of destitution, which Joseph had predicted, began to arrive. And the famine prevailed throughout the whole world, but there was bread in all the land of Egypt.54 και ηρξαντο τα επτα ετη του λιμου ερχεσθαι καθα ειπεν ιωσηφ και εγενετο λιμος εν παση τη γη εν δε παση γη αιγυπτου ησαν αρτοι
And being hungry, the people cried out to Pharaoh, asking for provisions. And he said to them: “Go to Joseph. And do whatever he will tell you.”55 και επεινασεν πασα η γη αιγυπτου εκεκραξεν δε ο λαος προς φαραω περι αρτων ειπεν δε φαραω πασι τοις αιγυπτιοις πορευεσθε προς ιωσηφ και ο εαν ειπη υμιν ποιησατε
Then the famine increased daily in all the land. And Joseph opened all of the storehouses and sold to the Egyptians. For the famine had oppressed them also.56 και ο λιμος ην επι προσωπου πασης της γης ανεωξεν δε ιωσηφ παντας τους σιτοβολωνας και επωλει πασι τοις αιγυπτιοις
And all the provinces came to Egypt, to buy food and to temper the misfortune of their destitution.57 και πασαι αι χωραι ηλθον εις αιγυπτον αγοραζειν προς ιωσηφ επεκρατησεν γαρ ο λιμος εν παση τη γη
