1 After two years, Pharaoh saw a dream. He thought himself to be standing above a river,	1 Deux ans plus tard, le Pharaon eut également un rêve. Il se trouvait sur les bords du Nil
2 from which ascended seven cows, exceedingly beautiful and stout. And they pastured in marshy places.	2 et il voyait monter du Nil sept vaches de belle apparence, bien grasses, qui paissaient au milieu des roseaux.
3 Likewise, another seven emerged from the river, filthy and thoroughly emaciated. And they pastured on the same bank of the river, in green places.	3 Mais bientôt sept autres vaches montèrent du Nil: elles étaient laides et très maigres. Elles se rangèrent à côté des premières, sur la rive du Nil,
4 And they devoured those whose appearance and condition of body was so wonderful. Pharaoh, having been awakened,	4 et ces vaches laides et très maigres mangèrent les sept vaches de belle apparence et bien grasses. C’est alors que le Pharaon s’éveilla.
5 slept again, and he saw another dream. Seven ears of grain sprung up on one stalk, full and well-formed.	5 Il se rendormit et eut un second rêve: sept épis montaient d’une seule tige, ils étaient lourds et bons.
6 Likewise, other ears of grain, of the same number, rose up, thin and struck with blight,	6 Mais bientôt, sept épis maigres et roussis par le vent d’est poussèrent à côté d’eux,
7 devouring all the beauty of the first. Pharaoh, when he awakened after his rest,	7 et ces épis maigres dévorèrent les sept épis lourds et pleins. C’est alors que le Pharaon s’éveilla et se rendit compte que c’était un rêve.
8 and when morning arrived, being terrified with fear, sent to all the interpreters of Egypt and to all of the wise men. And when they were summoned, he explained to them his dream; but there was no one who could interpret it.	8 À son réveil, le matin suivant, le Pharaon avait l’esprit troublé. Il convoqua donc tous les magiciens d’Égypte et tous les sages. Pharaon leur raconta les songes qu’il avait eus, mais personne ne pouvait lui en donner la signification.
9 Then at last the chief cupbearer, remembering, said, “I confess my sin.	9 Alors le chef du service des boissons parla à Pharaon: “Je vais aujourd’hui rappeler ma faute!
10 The king, being angry with his servants, ordered me and the chief miller of grain to be forced into the prison of the leader of the military.	10 Le Pharaon s’était mis en colère contre ses serviteurs, et il m’avait enfermé dans la maison du chef des gardes, moi et le chef du service des pains.
11 There, in one night, both of us saw a dream presaging the future.	11 Or dans la même nuit nous avons eu un rêve, lui et moi, et les deux rêves demandaient une interprétation.
12 In that place, there was a Hebrew, a servant of the same commander of the military, to whom we explained our dreams.	12 Il y avait avec nous un jeune Hébreu, serviteur du chef des gardes, et quand nous lui avons raconté nos rêves, il nous les a expliqués, donnant à chacun la signification du songe qu’il avait eu.
13 Whatever we heard was proven afterwards by the event of the matter. For I was restored to my office, and he was suspended on a cross.”	13 Et tout est arrivé comme il nous l’avait dit: j’ai été rétabli à mon poste, et l’autre a été pendu.”
14 Immediately, by the king’s authority, Joseph was led out of prison, and they shaved him. And changing his apparel, they presented him to him.	14 Pharaon envoya donc chercher Joseph. Vite, on le sortit de la prison; on le rasa et il changea de vêtements pour se présenter devant le Pharaon.
15 And he said to him, “I have seen dreams, and there is no one who can unfold them. I have heard that you are very wise at interpreting these.”	15 Le Pharaon dit à Joseph: “J’ai eu un rêve et il n’y a personne pour me l’expliquer. Mais j’ai entendu dire que lorsqu’on te raconte un rêve, tu en donnes la signification.”
16 Joseph responded, “Apart from me, God will respond favorably to Pharaoh.”	16 Joseph répondit au Pharaon: “Ce n’est pas moi, c’est Dieu qui donnera la bonne réponse au Pharaon.”
17 Therefore, Pharaoh explained what he had seen: “I thought myself to be standing on the bank of a river,	17 Le Pharaon raconta donc le songe à Joseph: “Je me tenais au bord du Nil,
18 and seven cows climbed up from the river, exceedingly beautiful and full of flesh. And they grazed in a pasture of a marshy greenery.	18 et voici que du Nil montaient sept vaches bien grasses et de belle apparence, qui se mirent à paître au milieu des roseaux.
19 And behold, there followed after these, another seven cows, with such deformity and emaciation as I had never seen in the land of Egypt.	19 Mais aussitôt derrière elles montèrent sept autres vaches malades, affreuses à voir, et si maigres que je n’en ai jamais vu de si laides dans toute l’Égypte.
20 These devoured and consumed the first,	20 Les vaches maigres et laides mangèrent les sept premières vaches, celles qui étaient bien grasses.
21 giving no indication of being full. But they remained in the same state of emaciation and squalor. Awakening, but being weighed down into sleep again,	21 Mais quand elles les eurent avalées, on pouvait se demander où elles les avaient mises, car elles étaient toujours aussi laides qu’auparavant. C’est alors que je me suis réveillé.
22 I saw a dream. Seven ears of grain sprang up on one stalk, full and very beautiful.	22 “Et puis j’ai eu un autre rêve: sept épis montaient d’une seule tige, ils étaient remplis et beaux,
23 Likewise, another seven, thin and struck with blight, rose up from the stalk.	23 mais bientôt, sept épis secs, maigres, brûlés par le vent d’est, poussèrent à côté d’eux.
24 And they devoured the beauty of the first. I explained this dream to the interpreters, and there is no one who can unfold it.”	24 Alors les épis maigres avalèrent les sept bons épis. J’en ai parlé aux magiciens, mais personne n’a pu me donner d’explication.”
25 Joseph responded: “The dream of the king is one. What God will do, he has revealed to Pharaoh.	25 Joseph dit au Pharaon: “Les deux songes du Pharaon ne font qu’un. Dieu a révélé au Pharaon ce qu’il va faire.
26 The seven beautiful cows, and the seven full ears of grain, are seven years of abundance. And so the force of the dreams is understood to be the same.	26 Les sept bonnes vaches sont sept années, et les sept bons épis sont sept années: c’est le même songe.
27 Likewise, the seven thin and emaciated cows, which ascended after them, and the seven thin ears of grain, which were struck with the burning wind, are seven approaching years of famine.	27 Les sept vaches maigres et laides qui montaient derrière elles sont encore sept années, comme les sept épis vides, brûlés par le vent d’est: ce sont les sept mêmes années de famine.
28 These will be fulfilled in this order.	28 C’est ce que j’ai dit au Pharaon: Dieu a fait connaître au Pharaon ce qu’il va faire.
29 Behold, there will arrive seven years of great fertility throughout the entire land of Egypt.	29 Voici qu’arrivent pour l’Égypte sept années de grande abondance,
30 After this, there will follow another seven years, of such great barrenness that all the former abundance will be delivered into oblivion. For the famine will consume all the land,	30 mais après elles viendront sept années de famine. L’Égypte oubliera le temps de l’abondance, car la famine dévorera le pays.
31 and the greatness of this destitution will cause the greatness of the abundance to be lost.	31 On ne se souviendra plus de l’abondance dans le pays, tant sera grande la famine qui suivra.
32 Now, as to what you saw the second time, it is a dream pertaining to the same thing. It is an indication of its firmness, because the word of God shall be done, and it shall be completed swiftly.	32 “Si le songe a été par deux fois répété au Pharaon, c’est que la chose est bien décidée de la part de Dieu, et que Dieu va se dépêcher de l’accomplir.
33 Now therefore, let the king provide a wise and industrious man, and place him over the land of Egypt,	33 Aussi, dès maintenant, il faut que Pharaon choisisse un homme intelligent et sage pour gouverner toute l’Égypte.
34 so that he may appoint overseers throughout all the regions. And let a fifth part of the fruits, throughout the seven fertile years	34 Le Pharaon établira des fonctionnaires sur tout le pays de façon à prélever le cinquième des récoltes d’Égypte pendant les années d’abondance.
35 that now have already begun to occur, be gathered into storehouses. And let all the grain be stored away, under the power of Pharaoh, and let it be kept in the cities.	35 Les fonctionnaires ramasseront toute la nourriture de ces bonnes années qui viennent et, sous l’autorité du Pharaon, ils feront des réserves de blé dans les villes et les garderont.
36 And let it be prepared for the future famine of seven years, which will oppress Egypt, and then the land will not be consumed by destitution.”	36 Il y aura ainsi de la nourriture en réserve dans le pays, en vue des sept années de famine qui viendront en Égypte, et le pays ne sera pas ruiné par la famine.”
37 The counsel pleased Pharaoh and all his ministers.	37 Ce discours plut au Pharaon et à tous ses serviteurs.
38 And he said to them, “Would we be able to find another such man, who is full of the Spirit of God?”	38 Le Pharaon se tourna vers ses serviteurs et leur dit: “Trouverons-nous un homme qui ait comme lui l’esprit de Dieu?”
39 Therefore, he said to Joseph: “Because God has revealed to you all that you have said, would I be able to find anyone wiser and as much like you?	39 Puis le Pharaon dit à Joseph: “Après que Dieu t’a révélé tout cela, il n’y a sûrement personne d’aussi intelligent et capable que toi.
40 You will be over my house, and to the authority of your mouth, all the people will show obedience. Only in one way, in the throne of the kingdom, will I go before you.”	40 C’est donc toi qui seras à la tête de ma maison, et tout le peuple sera soumis à tes ordres. Seul le trône me fera plus grand que toi.”
41 And again, Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Behold, I have appointed you over the entire land of Egypt.”	41 Le Pharaon dit encore à Joseph: “Regarde, je t’ai donné autorité sur tout le pays d’Égypte.”
42 And he took the ring from his own hand, and he gave it into his hand. And he clothed him with a robe of fine linen, and he placed a necklace of gold around his neck.	42 Alors le Pharaon enleva son anneau pour le passer au doigt de Joseph, il le revêtit d’habits de lin fin et mit un collier d’or à son cou.
43 And he caused him to ascend upon his second swift chariot, with the herald proclaiming that everyone should bend their knee before him, and that they should know that he was governor over the entire land of Egypt.	43 Il le fit monter sur le second de ses chars, et l’on criait devant lui: “Prosternez-vous!” Ce qui revenait à le mettre au-dessus de toute l’Égypte.
44 Likewise, the king said to Joseph: “I am Pharaoh: apart from your authority, no one will move hand or foot in all the land of Egypt.”	44 Le Pharaon dit alors à Joseph: “Je suis le Pharaon: sans ton ordre, personne ne lèvera la main ou le pied dans tout le pays d’Égypte!”
45 And he changed his name and called him, in the Egyptian tongue: ‘Savior of the world.’ And he gave him as a wife, Asenath, the daughter of Potiphera, priest of Heliopolis. And so Joseph went out into the land of Egypt.	45 Le Pharaon donna à Joseph le nom de Sofnat-Panéah, et il lui donna pour femme Asnat, fille de Poti-Phéra, prêtre d’On.
46 (Now he was thirty years old when he stood in the sight of king Pharaoh.) And he traveled throughout the regions of Egypt.	46 Joseph avait 30 ans quand il se présenta devant Pharaon, le roi d’Égypte. Joseph se retira de devant le Pharaon et commença à parcourir tout le pays d’Égypte.
47 And the fertility of the seven years arrived. And when the grain fields were reduced to sheaves, these were gathered into the storehouses of Egypt.	47 Pendant les sept années d’abondance, la terre produisit en quantité.
48 And now all the abundance of grain was stored away in every city.	48 Il rassembla donc toute la nourriture de ces sept années où l’abondance régnait en Égypte, et la mit en réserve dans les villes. Il rassembla à l’intérieur des villes la nourriture qui venait de la campagne.
49 And there was such a great abundance of wheat that it was comparable to the sands of the sea, and its bounty exceeded all measure.	49 Ainsi Joseph entassa une quantité de blé impossible à compter, comme le sable de la mer: oui c’était vraiment sans mesure!
50 Then, before the famine arrived, Joseph had two sons born, whom Asenath, the daughter of Potiphera, priest of Heliopolis, bore for him.	50 Avant l’arrivée de la famine, Asnat, fille de Poti-Phéra, prêtre d’On, donna à Joseph deux fils.
51 And he called the name of the firstborn Manasseh, saying, “God has caused me to forget all my labors and the house of my father.”	51 Joseph appela l’aîné Manassé, car, dit-il: “Dieu m’a fait oublier toute ma peine et la maison de mon père.”
52 Likewise, he named the second Ephraim, saying, “God has caused me to increase in the land of my poverty.”	52 Et le second, il l’appela Éphraïm, car, dit-il: “Dieu m’a fait grandir dans le pays de ma misère.”
53 And so, when the seven years of fertility that occurred in Egypt had passed,	53 Après les sept années d’abondance du pays d’Égypte,
54 the seven years of destitution, which Joseph had predicted, began to arrive. And the famine prevailed throughout the whole world, but there was bread in all the land of Egypt.	54 arrivèrent les sept années de famine, comme l’avait annoncé Joseph. C’était la famine dans tous les pays, mais en Égypte il y avait du pain.
55 And being hungry, the people cried out to Pharaoh, asking for provisions. And he said to them: “Go to Joseph. And do whatever he will tell you.”	55 Puis l’Égypte à son tour connut la faim et le peuple fit appel au Pharaon pour avoir du pain. Le Pharaon dit à toute l’Égypte: “Allez trouver Joseph, et faites ce qu’il vous dira.”
56 Then the famine increased daily in all the land. And Joseph opened all of the storehouses and sold to the Egyptians. For the famine had oppressed them also.	56 La famine s’aggravait dans tout le pays. Alors Joseph ouvrit les réserves et vendit du blé à l’Égypte au fur et à mesure que la famine s’y installait.
57 And all the provinces came to Egypt, to buy food and to temper the misfortune of their destitution.	57 De tous les pays on venait aussi en Égypte pour acheter du blé à Joseph, car la famine était grande sur toute la terre.
