1 Yahweh spoke to Moses and said,1 ܘܡܠܠ ܡܪܝܐ ܥܡ ܡܘܫܐ ܘܐܡܪ ܠܗ.
2 'Send out men, one from each tribe, to reconnoitre the land of Canaan which I am giving theIsraelites. Each of them is to be a leading man of the tribe.'2 ܫܕܪ ܓܒܪ̈ܐ ܢܓܫܘܢ ܐܪܥܐ ܕܟܢܥܢ. ܕܝ̇ܗܒ ܐܢܐ ܠܒܢ̈ܝ ܐܝܣܪܝܠ. ܚܕ ܚܕ ܓܒܪܐ ܡܢ ܫܒܛܐ ܕܐܒ̈ܗܘܗܝ ܫܕܪ. ܟܠ ܪ̈ܫܐ ܕܐܝܬ ܒܗܘܢ.
3 At Yahweh's order, Moses sent them from the desert of Paran. All of them were leading men of Israel.3 ܘܫܕܪ ܐܢܘܢ ܡܘܫܐ ܡܢ ܡܕܒܪܐ ܕܦܪܢ. ܒܡܠܬ ܦܘܡܗ ܕܡܪܝܐ. ܟܠܗܘܢ ܓܒܪ̈ܐ ܪ̈ܫܐ ܐܢܘܢ ܕܐܝܣܪܝܠ.
4 These were their names: For the tribe of Reuben, Shammua son of Zaccur:4 ܘܗܠܝܢ ܫܡ̈ܗܝܗܘܢ. ܡܢ ܫܒܛܐ ܕܪܘܒܝܠ. ܫܡܘܥ ܒܪ ܙܟܘܪ.
5 for the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat son of Hori;5 ܡܢ ܫܒܛܐ ܕܫܡܥܘܢ. ܫܦܛ ܒܪ ܚܕܝ.
6 for the tribe of Judah, Caleb son of Jephunneh;6 ܡܢ ܫܒܛܐ ܕܝܗܘܕܐ ܟܠܒ ܒܪ ܝܘܦܢܐ.
7 for the tribe of of Issachar, Igal son of Joseph;7 ܡܢ ܫܒܛܐ ܕܐܝܣܟܪ. ܢܓܐܝܠ ܒܪ ܝܘܣܦ.
8 for the tribe of Ephraim, Hoshea son of Nun;8 ܡܢ ܫܒܛܐ ܕܐܦܪܝܡ. ܗܘܫܥ ܒܪܢܘܢ.
9 for the tribe of Benjamin, Palti son of Raphu;9 ܡܢ ܫܒܛܐ ܕܒܢܝܡܝܢ. ܦܠܛܝ ܒܪ ܕܦܘ.
10 for the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel son of Sodi;10 ܡܢ ܫܒܛܐ ܕܙܒܘܠܘܢ. ܓܕܝ ܒܪ ܣܘܪܝ .
11 for the tribe of Joseph, for the tribe of Manasseh, Gaddi son of Susi;11 ܡܢ ܫܒܛܐ ܕܝܘܣܦ ܡܢ ܫܒܛܐ ܕܡܢܫܐ. ܓܕܝ ܒܪ ܣܘܣܝ.
12 for the tribe of Dan, Ammiel son of Gemal i;12 ܡܢ ܫܒܛܐ ܕܕܢ. ܓܡܠܝܐܝܠ ܒܪ ܓܡܠܝ.
13 for the tribe of Asher, Sethur son of Michael;13 ܡܢ ܫܒܛܐ ܕܐܫܝܪ. ܣܬܘܪ ܒܪ ܡܠܟܝܠ.
14 for the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi son of Vophsi;14 ܡܢ ܫܒܛܐ ܕܢܦܬܠܝ. ܢܚܒܝ ܒܪ ܘܦܣܝ.
15 for the tribe of Gad, Geuel son of Machi.15 ܡܢ ܫܒܛܐ ܕܓܕ ܓܘܐܝܠ ܒܪ ܡܟܝܪ.
16 Such were the names of the men whom Moses sent to reconnoitre the country. Moses then gaveHoshea son of Nun the name Joshua.16 ܗܠܝܢ ܫܡ̈ܗܐ ܕܓܒܪ̈ܐ ܕܫܕܪ ܡܘܫܐ ܠܡܓܫ ܐܪܥܐ. ܘܩܪܐ ܡܘܫܐ ܠܗܘܫܥ ܒܪܢܘܢ ܝܫܘܥ.
17 Moses sent them to reconnoitre the land of Canaan, 'Go up into the Negeb,' he said, 'then go up intothe highlands.17 ܘܫܕܪ ܐܢܘܢ ܡܘܫܐ ܠܡܓܫ ܐܪܥܐ ܕܟܢܥܢ ܘܐܡܪ ܠܗܘܢ. ܣܩܘ ܗܟܢܐ ܠܬܝܡܢܐ. ܘܣܩܘ ܠܛܘܪܐ.
18 See what sort of country it is, and what sort of people the inhabitants are, whether they are strong orweak, few or many,18 ܘܚܙܘ ܠܐܪܥܐ ܡܢܐ ܗܝ. ܘܠܥܡܐ ܕܝ̇ܬܒܝܢ ܒܗ̇. ܐܢ ܥܫܝܢ ܗܘ ܐܘ ܚܠܫ. ܐܘ ܙܥܘܪ ܗܘ ܐܘ ܣܓܝ.
19 what sort of land they live on, whether it is good or poor; what sort of towns they live in, whether theyare open or fortified;19 ܘܡܢܐ ܗܝ ܐܪܥܐ ܕܝ̇ܬܒܝܢ ܒܗ̇.
20 what sort of land it is, fertile or barren, wooded or open. Be bold, and bring back some of thecountry's produce.' It was the season for early grapes.20 ܐܢ ܫܡܝܢܐ ܗܝ ܐܘ ܐܝܬ ܒܗ̇ ܐ̈ܝܠܢܐ ܐܘ ܠܐ. ܘܐܬܚܝܠܘ ܘܣܒܘ ܡܢ ܦܐܪ̈ܐ ܕܐܪܥܐ. ܘܝܘܡ̈ܬܐ ܝܘܡ̈ܝ ܒܟܪ̈ܐ ܕܥܢ̈ܒܐ.
21 They went up and reconnoitred the country from the desert of Zin to Rehob, the Pass of Hamath.21 ܘܣܠܩܘ ܘܓܫܘܗ̇ ܠܐܪܥܐ ܡܢ ܡܕܒܪܐ ܕܨܝܢ. ܘܥܕܡܐ ܠܪܚܘܒ ܕܒܡܥܠܢܐ ܕܚܡܬ.
22 They went up by way of the Negeb as far as Hebron, where Ahiman, Sheshai and Talmai, theAnakim, lived. (Hebron was founded seven years before Tanis in Egypt.)22 ܘܣܠܩܘ ܠܬܝܡܢܐ. ܘܐܬܘ ܥܕܡܐ ܠܚܒܪܘܢ. ܘܬܡܢ ܗܘܘ ܐܚܝܡܢ ܘܫܝܫܝ ܘܬܘܠܡܝ ܒܢ̈ܝ ܓܢܒܪ̈ܐ. ܘܚܒܪܘܢ ܫܒܥ ܫ̈ܢܝܢ ܐܬܒܢܝܬ ܩܕܡ ܨܥܢ ܕܒܡܨܪܝܢ.
23 Reaching the Vale of Eshcol, there they lopped off a vine branch with a cluster of grapes, which twoof them carried away on a pole, as wel as pomegranates and figs.23 ܘܐܬܘ ܥܕܡܐ ܠܢܚܠܐ ܕܣܓܘܠܐ. ܘܦܣܩܘ ܡܢ ܬܡܢ ܫܒܘܩܐ ܘܣܓܘܠܐ ܚܕ ܕܥܢ̈ܒܐ. ܘܫܩܠܘܗܝ ܒܩܘܦܐ ܒܝܬ ܬܪ̈ܝܢ. ܘܡܢ ܪ̈ܘܡܢܐ ܘܡܢ ܬܐ̈ܢܐ.
24 This place was called the Vale of Eshcol after the cluster which the Israelites cut there.24 ܘܠܐܬܪܐ ܗ̇ܘ ܩܪܘ ܢܚܠܐ ܕܣܓܘܠܐ. ܡܛܠ ܣܓܘܠܐ ܕܩܛܦܘ ܡܢ ܬܡܢ ܒܢ̈ܝ ܐܝܣܪܝܠ.
25 After forty days they returned from reconnoitring the country.25 ܘܗܦܟܘ ܡܢ ܓܫܬܗ̇ ܕܐܪܥܐ ܒܬܪ ܐܪ̈ܒܥܝܢ ܝܘܡ̈ܝܢ.
26 Making their way to Moses, Aaron and the whole community of Israel, in the desert of Paran, atKadesh, they made their report to them and the whole community, and displayed the country's produce.26 ܘܐܬܘ ܠܘܬ ܡܘܫܐ ܘܠܘܬ ܐܗܪܘܢ. ܘܠܘܬ ܟܠܗ̇ ܟܢܘܫܬܐ ܕܒ̈ܢܝ ܐܝܣܪܝܠ ܠܡܕܒܪܐ ܕܦܪܢ ܠܪܩܡ. ܘܐܬܝܒܘܗܝ ܦܬܓܡܐ ܠܗ ܘܠܟܠܗ̇ ܟܢܘܫܬܐ. ܘܚܘܝܘ ܐܢܘܢ ܦܐܪ̈ܐ ܕܐܪܥܐ.
27 This was the report they gave: 'We made our way into the country where you sent us. It does indeedflow with milk and honey; here is what it produces.27 ܘܐܫܬܥܝܘ ܠܗ ܘܐܡܪܘ. ܐܙܠܢ ܠܐܪܥܐ ܕܫܕܪܬܢ ܘܡܪܕܝܐ ܚܠܒܐ ܘܕܒܫܐ. ܘܗܠܝܢ ܦܐܪ̈ܝܗ̇.
28 At the same time, its inhabitants are a powerful people; the towns are fortified and very big; yes, andwe saw the Anakim there.28 ܒܪܡ ܕܝܢ ܥܫܝܢ ܥܡܐ ܕܝ̇ܬܒܝܢ ܒܐܪܥܐ. ܘܩܘܪ̈ܝܐ ܥܫܝܢܢ ܘܛܒ ܪ̈ܘܪܒܢ. ܘܐܦ ܒܢ̈ܝ ܓܢܒܪ̈ܐ ܚܙܝܢ ܬܡܢ.
29 The Amalekites occupy the Negeb area, the Hittites, Jebusites and Amorites the highlands, and theCanaanites the sea coast and the banks of the Jordan.'29 ܥܡܠܝܩ ܝ̇ܬܒ ܒܐܪܥܐ ܕܬܝܡܢܐ. ܘܚ̈ܬܝܐ ܘܝܒ̈ܘܣܝܐ ܘܐܡܘܪ̈ܝܐ ܝ̇ܬܒܝܢ ܒܛܘܪܐ. ܘܟܢ̈ܥܢܝܐ ܝ̇ܬܒܝܢ ܥܠ ܝܕ ܝܡܐ. ܘܥܠ ܝܕ ܝܘܪܕܢܢ.
30 Caleb called the people round Moses to silence and then said, 'We must march in immediately andtake it; we are certainly able to conquer it.'30 ܘܫܬܩ ܟܠܒ ܥܡܐ ܡܢ ܡܘܫܐ ܘܐܡܪ. ܡܣܩ ܢܣܩ ܘܢܐܪܬܝܗ̇. ܡܛܠ ܕܡܨܝܢܢ ܚܝܠܗ̇.
31 But the men who had been with him said, 'We cannot attack these people; they are stronger than weare.'31 ܘܓܒܪ̈ܐ ܕܣܠܩܘ ܥܡܗ ܐܡ̇ܪܝܢ. ܠܐ ܡܫܟܚܝܢܢ ܠܡܣܩ ܥܠ ܥܡܐ. ܡܛܠ ܕܥܫܝܢ ܗܘ ܡܢܢ.
32 And they began disparaging to the Israelites the country they had reconnoitred, saying, 'The countrywe have been to reconnoitre is a country that devours its inhabitants. Al the people we saw there were ofenormous size.32 ܘܐܦܩܘ ܛܒܗ̇ ܕܐܪܥܐ ܗ̇ܢܘܢ ܕܓܫܘܗ̇ ܠܒܢ̈ܝ ܐܝܣܪܝܠ. ܘܐܡܪܘ ܠܗܘܢ. ܐܪܥܐ ܕܥܒܪܢ ܒܗ̇ ܘܓܫܢܗ̇. ܐܪܥܐ ܐ̇ܟܠܬ ܥܡܘܪ̈ܝܗ̇ ܗܝ. ܘܟܠ ܥܡܐ ܕܚܙܝܢ ܒܓܘܗ̇. ܓܒܪ̈ܐ ܐܢܘܢ ܕܡܫܘܚܬܐ.
33 We saw giants there too (the Anakim, descended from the Giants). We felt like grasshoppers, andso we seemed to them.'33 ܘܬܡܢ ܚܙܝܢ ܓܢܒܪ̈ܐ ܒܢ̈ܝ ܓܢܒܪ̈ܐ. ܕܡܢ ܓܢܒܪ̈ܐ . ܘܗ̈ܘܝܢ ܒܥܝܢ̈ܝܗܘܢ ܐܝܟ ܩܡ̈ܨܐ ܗܟܢܐ ܗ̈ܘܝܢ ܒܥܝܢ̈ܝܗܘܢ.
