NEW JERUSALEM | DOUAI-RHEIMS |
---|---|
God of vengeance, Yahweh, God of vengeance, shine forth! | 1 The Lord is the God to whom revenge belongeth: the God of revenge hath acted freely. |
Arise, judge of the world, give back the proud what they deserve! | 2 Lift up thyself, thou that judgest the earth: render a reward to the proud. |
How long are the wicked, Yahweh, how long are the wicked to triumph? | 3 How long shall sinners, O Lord: how long shall sinners glory? |
They bluster and boast, they flaunt themselves, all the evil-doers. | 4 Shall they utter, and speak iniquity: shall all speak who work injustice? |
They crush your people, Yahweh, they oppress your heritage, | 5 Thy people, O Lord, they have brought low: and they have afflicted thy inheritance. |
they murder the widow and the stranger, bring the orphan to a violent death. | 6 They have slain the widow and the stranger: and they have murdered the fatherless. |
They say, 'Yahweh is not looking, the God of Jacob is taking no notice.' | 7 And they have said: The Lord shall not see: neither shall the God of Jacob understand. |
Take notice yourselves, you coarsest of people! Fools, when wil you learn some sense? | 8 Understand, ye senseless among the people: and, you fools, be wise at last. |
Shal he who implanted the ear not hear, he who fashioned the eye not see? | 9 He that planted the ear, shall he not hear? or he that formed the eye, doth he not consider? |
Shal he who instructs nations not punish? Yahweh, the teacher of al people, | 10 He that chastiseth nations, shall he not rebuke: he that teacheth man knowledge? |
knows human plans and how insipid they are. | 11 The Lord knoweth the thoughts of men, that they are vain. |
How blessed are those you instruct, Yahweh, whom you teach by means of your law, | 12 Blessed is the man whom thou shalt instruct, O Lord: and shalt teach him out of thy law. |
to give them respite in evil times, til a pit is dug for the wicked. | 13 That thou mayst give him rest from the evil days: till a pit be dug for the wicked. |
Yahweh will not abandon his people, he wil not desert his heritage; | 14 For the Lord will not cast off his people: neither will he forsake his own inheritance. |
for judgement will again become saving justice, and in its wake al upright hearts will fol ow. | 15 Until justice be turned into judgment: and they that are near it are all the upright in heart. |
Who rises up on my side against the wicked? Who stands firm on my side against al evil-doers? | 16 Who shall rise up for me against the evildoers? or who shall stand with me against the workers of iniquity? |
If Yahweh did not come to my help, I should soon find myself dwel ing in the silence. | 17 Unless the Lord had been my helper, my soul had almost dwelt in hell. |
I need only say, 'I am slipping,' for your faithful love, Yahweh, to support me; | 18 If I said: My foot is moved: thy mercy, O Lord, assisted me. |
however great the anxiety of my heart, your consolations soothe me. | 19 According to the multitude of my sorrows in my heart, thy comforts have given joy to my soul. |
Are you partner to a destructive court, that gives disorder the status of law? | 20 Doth the seat of iniquity stick to thee, who framest labour in commandment? |
They make an attack on the life of the upright, and condemn innocent blood. | 21 They will hunt after the soul of the just, and will condemn innocent blood. |
No! Yahweh is a stronghold to me, my God is my rock of refuge. | 22 But the Lord is my refuge: and my God the help of my hope. |
He turns back their guilt on themselves, annihilates them for their wickedness, he annihilates them,Yahweh our God. | 23 And he will render them their iniquity: and in their malice he will destroy them: the Lord our God will destroy them. |
