1 Now, Joab son of Zeruiah observed that the king was favourably inclined to Absalom.	1 Joab, fils de Sarvia, ayant reconnu que le coeur du roi se rapprochait d'Absalom,
2 Joab therefore sent to Tekoa for a wise woman. 'Pretend to be in mourning,' he said. 'Dress yourself inmourning, do not perfume yourself; act like a woman who has long been mourning for the dead.	2 fit venir de Thécua une femme habile, et il lui dit : Faites semblant d'être dans l'affliction; prenez un vêtement de deuil, et ne vous parfumez point, afin que vous paraissiez comme une femme qui pleure un mort depuis longtemps.
3 Then go to the king and say this to him.' And Joab put the words into her mouth which she was to say.	3 Ensuite vous vous présenterez au roi, et vous lui tiendrez tels et tels discours. Et Joab lui mit dans la bouche les paroles qu'elle devait dire.
4 So the woman of Tekoa went to the king and, fal ing on her face to the ground, prostrated herself.'Help, my lord king!' she said.	4 Cette femme de Thécua s'étant donc présentée au roi, se jeta à terre devant lui, se prosterna, et lui dit : O roi, sauvez-moi.
5 The king said, 'What is the matter?' 'As you see,' she replied, 'I am a widow; my husband is dead.	5 Le roi lui dit : Que demandez-vous? Elle lui répondit : Hélas! je suis une femme veuve; car mon mari est mort.
6 Your servant had two sons and out in the fields, where there was no one to intervene, they had aquarrel. And one of them struck the other one and kil ed him.	6 Votre servante avait deux fils, et ils se sont querellés dans les champs, où il n'y avait personne qui pût les séparer; et l'un d'eux a frappé l'autre, et l'a tué.
7 And now the whole clan has risen against your servant. "Give up the man who kil ed his brother," theysay, "so that we can put him to death, to atone for the life of the brother whom he has murdered; and thus weshall destroy the heir as wel ." By this means, they wil extinguish the ember stil left to me, leaving my husbandneither name nor survivor on the face of the earth.'	7 Et maintenant tous les parents se soulèvent contre votre servante, et disent : Donnez-nous celui qui a tué son frère, afin que nous le fassions périr pour la vie de son frère qu'il a tué, et que nous détruisions l'héritier. Ainsi ils veulent éteindre l'étincelle qui me reste, pour ne laisser à mon mari ni nom ni survivant sur la terre.
8 Then the king said to the woman, 'Go home; I myself shal give orders about your case.'	8 Le roi dit à cette femme : Retournez chez vous; je donnerai des ordres à votre sujet.
9 The woman of Tekoa said to the king, 'My lord king! May the guilt be on me and on my family; the kingand his throne are innocent of it.'	9 Elle lui répondit : Seigneur roi, s'il y a en ceci de l'injustice, qu'elle retombe sur moi et sur la maison de mon père; mais que le roi et son trône soit innocent.
10 'Bring me the man who threatened you,' the king replied, 'and he shal never hurt you again.'	10 Et le roi dit : Si quelqu'un parle contre vous, amenez-le-moi, et soyez sûre qu'il ne vous troublera plus.
11 She then said, 'Let the king be pleased to pronounce the name of Yahweh your God, so that theavenger of blood may not do greater harm and destroy my son.' 'As Yahweh lives,' he said, 'not one of yourson's hairs shal fal to the ground!'	11 Elle dit encore : Je vous conjure par le Seigneur votre Dieu d'empêcher que les parents ne s'élèvent l'un après l'autre, pour venger par la mort de mon fils le sang de celui qui a été tué. Le roi lui répondit : Vive le Seigneur! il ne tombera pas à terre un seul cheveu de la tête de votre fils.
12 Then the woman said, 'Permit your servant to say something else to my lord the king.' 'Go on,' hesaid.	12 Et la femme ajouta : Permettez à votre servante de dire encore un mot. Parlez, dit le roi.
13 The woman said, 'Why then has the king, who by giving this verdict has condemned himself,conceived the idea, against God's people's interests, of not bringing home the son whom he has banished?	13 La femme lui dit : Pourquoi pensez-vous de la sorte à l'égard du peuple de Dieu, et pourquoi le roi a-t-il prononcé cette parole, de manière à pécher en ne rappelant pas son fils qu'il a banni?
14 We are al mortal; we are like water spilt on the ground, which cannot be gathered up again, nor doesGod raise up a corpse; let the king therefore make plans for his banished son not to remain far away from him inexile.	14 Nous mourons tous, et nous nous écoulons sur la terre comme des eaux qui ne reviennent plus; et Dieu ne veut pas qu'une âme périsse, mais Il diffère l'exécution de Son arrêt, de peur que celui qui a été rejeté ne se perde entièrement.
15 'Now, the reason why I came to speak about this to my lord the king is that I was being intimidated,and your servant thought, "I shal speak to the king; perhaps the king will do what his servant asks.	15 C'est pourquoi je suis venue dire cette parole à mon seigneur le roi devant le peuple, et votre servante a dit : Je parlerai au roi, pour voir si le roi exaucera en quelque manière la prière de sa servante.
16 Surely the king wil consent to save his servant from the clutches of the man who is trying to cut bothme and my son off from God's heritage.	16 Le roi a déjà écouté sa servante, pour la délivrer elle et son fils de la main de tous ceux qui voulaient les exterminer de l'héritage du Seigneur.
17 Let a word from my lord the king, restore the peace!" your servant thought, "for my lord the king islike the Angel of God in understanding good and evil." May Yahweh your God be with you!'	17 Permettez donc à votre servante de parler encore, afin que ce que le roi mon seigneur a ordonné, s'exécute comme un sacrifice promis à Dieu. Car le roi mon seigneur est comme un Ange de Dieu, qui n'est touché ni des bénédictions ni des malédictions. C'est pourquoi le Seigneur votre Dieu est avec vous.
18 Replying to the woman, the king said, 'Now do not evade the question which I am going to ask you.'The woman said, 'Let my lord the king ask his question.'	18 Alors le roi dit à cette femme : Je vous demande une chose; avouez-moi la vérité. La femme lui répondit : Parlez, mon seigneur le roi.
19 'Is not Joab's hand behind you in all this?' the king asked. The woman replied, 'As you live, my lordking, I cannot escape what my lord the king says, either to right or to left. Yes, it was your servant Joab whogave me my orders; he put al these words into your servant's mouth.	19 Et le roi dit : La main de Joab n'est-elle pas en tout cela? La femme répondit : Mon seigneur le roi, je vous jure par votre vie, que Dieu conserve, que rien n'est plus véritable que ce que vous dites; car c'est votre serviteur Joab qui m'a donné cet ordre, et qui a mis dans la bouche de votre servante tout ce que je viens de dire.
20 Your servant Joab did this to approach the matter indirectly, but my lord has the wisdom of the Angelof God; he knows everything that happens on earth!'	20 C'est lui qui m'a commandé de vous parler ainsi en parabole. Mais vous, monseigneur le roi, vous êtes sage comme l'est un Ange de Dieu, et vous pénétrez tout ce qui se fait sur la terre.
21 The king then said to Joab, 'Very wel , the suit is granted. Go and bring the young man Absalomback.'	21 Le roi dit donc à Joab : Je vous accorde la grâce que vous me demandez; allez, et faites revenir mon fils Absalom.
22 Joab fell on his face to the ground, prostrated himself and blessed the king. 'My lord king,' Joab said,'today your servant knows that he has won your favour, since the king has done what his servant asked.'	22 Alors Joab, tombant le visage contre terre, se prosterna, bénit le roi, et lui dit : Monseigneur le roi, votre serviteur reconnaît aujourd'hui qu'il a trouvé grâce devant vous; car vous avez accompli sa parole.
23 Joab then set off, went to Geshur, and brought Absalom back to Jerusalem.	23 Joab partit donc, et s'en alla à Gessur, d'où il amena Absalom à Jérusalem.
24 The king, however, said, 'Let him retire to his own house; he is not to appear in my presence.' SoAbsalom retired to his own house and was not received by the king.	24 Mais le roi dit : Qu'il retourne dans sa maison, mais il ne me verra point. Absalom revint donc dans sa maison, et il ne vit point le roi.
25 In al Israel there was no one more praised for his beauty than Absalom; from the sole of his foot tothe crown of his head, he could not be faulted.	25 Or il n'y avait pas d'homme dans tout Israël qui fût si bien fait ni si beau qu'Absalom; depuis la plante des pieds jusqu'à la tête il n'y avait pas en lui le moindre défaut.
26 When he cut his hair -- he shaved it once a year because his hair got too heavy -- he would weighthe hair: two hundred shekels, king's weight.	26 Lorsqu'il se rasait la tête, ce qu'il faisait une fois tous les ans, parce que sa chevelure lui pesait, le poids de ses cheveux était de deux cents sicles, selon le poids ordinaire.
27 To Absalom were born three sons and one daughter called Tamar; she was a beautiful woman.	27 Il avait trois fils, et une fille appelée Thamar, qui était très belle.
28 Absalom lived in Jerusalem for two years without being received by the king.	28 Absalom demeura deux ans à Jérusalem, sans voir le roi.
29 Absalom then summoned Joab, intending to send him to the king, but Joab would not come to him.He sent for him a second time, but still he would not come.	29 Ensuite il manda Joab pour l'envoyer vers David. Mais Joab ne voulut pas venir chez lui. Après qu'il l'eut mandé une seconde fois, Joab ayant encore refusé de venir,
30 At this, Absalom said to his retainers, 'Look, Joab's field is next to mine and he has barley in it; goand set it on fire.' Absalom's retainers set fire to the field.	30 il dit à ses serviteurs : Vous savez que Joab a un champ d'orge qui est auprès du mien; allez donc, et mettez-y le feu. Ses gens brûlèrent donc l'orge de Joab. Les serviteurs de Joab vinrent alors trouver leur maître, après avoir déchiré leurs vêtements, et ils lui dirent : Les serviteurs d'Absalom ont brûlé une partie de votre champ.
31 Joab then stirred himself, went to Absalom in his house and asked, 'Why have your retainers set myfield on fire?'	31 Joab alla donc trouver Absalom dans sa maison, et lui dit : Pourquoi vos gens ont-ils mis le feu à ma moisson?
32 Absalom replied to Joab, 'Look, I sent word to you: Come here, so that I can send you to the king tosay, "Why come back from Geshur? Better for me to have been there still!" Now I want to be received by theking, and if I am guilty, let him put me to death!'	32 Absalom répondit à Joab : Je vous ai fait prier de venir me voir, afin de vous envoyer vers le roi pour lui dire de ma part : Pourquoi suis-je revenu de Gessur? Il vaudrait mieux que j'y fusse encore. Je demande donc la grâce de voir le roi; que s'il se souvient encore de ma faute, qu'il me fasse mourir.
33 Joab went to the king and told him this. He then summoned Absalom, who prostrated himself with hisface to the ground before the king. And the king kissed Absalom.	33 Joab étant allé trouver le roi, lui rapporta toutes ces choses. Absalom fut alors appelé; il se présenta devant le roi, et se prosterna jusqu'à terre devant lui, et le roi le baisa.
