1 Symeon Peter, a slave and apostle of Jesus Christ, to those who have received a faith of equal value to ours through the righteousness of our God and savior Jesus Christ:	1 Simeone Pietro, servo e apostolo di Gesù Cristo, a quelli che, in virtù della giustizia del Dio nostro e Salvatore Gesù Cristo, ebbero in sorte la stessa nostra preziosa fede.
2 may grace and peace be yours in abundance through knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.	2 Vi siano concesse in abbondanza grazia e pace per la conoscenza perfetta di Dio e di Gesù, Signore nostro.
3 His divine power has bestowed on us everything that makes for life and devotion, through the knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and power.	3 La sua divina potenza ci ha donato tutto quanto giova alla vita e alla pietà mediante la perfetta conoscenza di colui che ci chiamò per sua propria gloria e virtù.
4 Through these, he has bestowed on us the precious and very great promises, so that through them you may come to share in the divinenature, after escaping from the corruption that is in the world because of evil desire.	4 Per questo scopo ci furono donati i preziosi e magnifici beni promessi, affinché per mezzo loro diventiate partecipi della divina natura, dopo aver fuggito la corruzione che nel mondo dilaga a causa della concupiscenza.
5 For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, virtue with knowledge,	5 Appunto per questo, portandovi tutto l’impegno possibile, aggiungete alla fede la virtù, alla Virtù la scienza,
6 knowledge with self-control, self-control with endurance, endurance with devotion,	6 alla scienza la continenza, alla continenza la perseveranza, alla perseveranza la pietà,
7 devotion with mutual affection, mutual affection with love.	7 alla pietà l’amor fraterno, all’amor fraterno la carità.
8 If these are yours and increase in abundance, they will keep you from being idle or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.	8 In effetti, se queste cose in voi ci sono e sovrabbondano, non vi lasceranno quo e sterili dei frutti d’una perfetta conoscenza del Signore nostro Gesù Cristo.
9 Anyone who lacks them is blind and shortsighted, forgetful of the cleansing of his past sins.	9 Chi invece non e ha, è cieco, miope, dimentico d’essere stato purificato dalle sue antiche colpe.
10 Therefore, brothers, be all the more eager to make your calland election firm, for, in doing so, you will never stumble.	10 Dunque, fratelli, impegnatevi sempre più a rendere salda la vostra vocazione ed elezione; in tal modo non cadrete mai.
11 For, in this way, entry into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and savior Jesus Christ will be richly provided for you.	11 È così infatti che vi sarà munificamente concesso l’ingresso nel regno eterno del Signore nostro e Salvatore Gesù Cristo.
12 Therefore, I will always remind you of these things, even though you already know them and are established in the truth you have.	12 Ecco perché avrò sempre a cuore di ricordarvi tali cose, benché già le conosciate e siate saldamente piantati nella verità.
13 I think it right, as long as I am in this "tent," to stir you up by a reminder,	13 Ritengo peraltro mio dovere, fin quando vivrò in questa tenda, di tenervi desti con avvertimenti,
14 since I know that I will soon have to put it aside, as indeed our Lord Jesus Christ has shown me.	14 pur sapendo che la mia tenda dovrò presto ripiegarla, come appunto il Signor nostro Gesù Cristo mi manifestò.
15 I shall also make every effort to enable you always to remember these things after my departure.	15 Ma io mi preoccuperò che, anche dopo la mia dipartita, abbiate in ogni circostanza a riportare il vostro ricordo a queste cose.
16 We did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we had been eyewitnesses of his majesty.	16 Infatti non è stato perdendoci dietro miti ingegnosi che noi vi facemmo conoscere la potenza e la venuta del Signor nostro Gesù Cristo, ma in quanto spettatori della sua maestà.
17 For he received honor and glory from God the Father when that unique declaration came to him from the majestic glory, "This is my Son, my beloved, with whom I am well pleased."	17 Egli ricevette da Dio Padre onore e gloria, quando, dalla gloria più sublime, scese su di lui quella voce: «Questo è il Figlio mio diletto, nel quale io posi le mie compiacenze».
18 We ourselves heard this voice come from heaven while we were with him on the holy mountain.	18 E questa voce noi l’udimmo scendere dal cielo quand’eravamo con lui sul monte santo.
19 Moreover, we possess the prophetic message that is altogether reliable. You will do well to be attentive to it, as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.	19 Abbiamo così meglio confermata la parola profetica, alla quale fate bene a rivolgervi, come a lampada che brilli in luogo buio, fino a quando il giorno spunti e la stella del mattino si alzi nei vostri cuori.
20 Know this first of all, that there is no prophecy of scripture that is a matter of personal interpretation,	20 Poiché dovete soprattutto ricordarvi che nessuna profezia della Scrittura soggiace a interpretazione privata;
21 for no prophecy ever came through human will; but rather human beings moved by the holy Spirit spoke under the influence of God.	21 poiché non per volontà d’uomo fu mai proferita profezia alcuna, ma perché degli uomini, portati dallo Spirito Santo, parlarono da parte di Dio.
