NEW AMERICAN BIBLENEW JERUSALEM
After this, there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.1 After this there was a Jewish festival, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
Now there is in Jerusalem at the Sheep (Gate) a pool called in Hebrew Bethesda, with five porticoes.2 Now in Jerusalem next to the Sheep Pool there is a pool called Bethesda in Hebrew, which has fiveporticos;
In these lay a large number of ill, blind, lame, and crippled.3 and under these were crowds of sick people, blind, lame, paralysed.
4
One man was there who had been ill for thirty-eight years.5 One man there had an il ness which had lasted thirty-eight years,
When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had been ill for a long time, he said to him, "Do you want to be well?"6 and when Jesus saw him lying there and knew he had been in that condition for a long time, he said,'Do you want to be wel again?'
The sick man answered him, "Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up; while I am on my way, someone else gets down there before me."7 'Sir,' replied the sick man, 'I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is disturbed; and while Iam stil on the way, someone else gets down there before me.'
Jesus said to him, "Rise, take up your mat, and walk."8 Jesus said, 'Get up, pick up your sleeping-mat and walk around.'
Immediately the man became well, took up his mat, and walked. Now that day was a sabbath.9 The man was cured at once, and he picked up his mat and started to walk around. Now that dayhappened to be the Sabbath,
So the Jews said to the man who was cured, "It is the sabbath, and it is not lawful for you to carry your mat."10 so the Jews said to the man who had been cured, 'It is the Sabbath; you are not al owed to carry yoursleeping-mat.'
He answered them, "The man who made me well told me, 'Take up your mat and walk.'"11 He replied, 'But the man who cured me told me, "Pick up your sleeping-mat and walk around." '
They asked him, "Who is the man who told you, 'Take it up and walk'?"12 They asked, 'Who is the man who said to you, "Pick up your sleeping-mat and walk around"? '
The man who was healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had slipped away, since there was a crowd there.13 The man had no idea who it was, since Jesus had disappeared, as the place was crowded.
After this Jesus found him in the temple area and said to him, "Look, you are well; do not sin any more, so that nothing worse may happen to you."14 After a while Jesus met him in the Temple and said, 'Now you are wel again, do not sin any more, orsomething worse may happen to you.'
The man went and told the Jews that Jesus was the one who had made him well.15 The man went back and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had cured him.
Therefore, the Jews began to persecute Jesus because he did this on a sabbath.16 It was because he did things like this on the Sabbath that the Jews began to harass Jesus.
But Jesus answered them, "My Father is at work until now, so I am at work."17 His answer to them was, 'My Father stil goes on working, and I am at work, too.'
For this reason the Jews tried all the more to kill him, because he not only broke the sabbath but he also called God his own father, making himself equal to God.18 But that only made the Jews even more intent on kil ing him, because not only was he breaking theSabbath, but he spoke of God as his own Father and so made himself God's equal.
Jesus answered and said to them, "Amen, amen, I say to you, a son cannot do anything on his own, but only what he sees his father doing; for what he does, his son will do also.19 To this Jesus replied: In al truth I tel you, by himself the Son can do nothing; he can do only what hesees the Father doing: and whatever the Father does the Son does too.
For the Father loves his Son and shows him everything that he himself does, and he will show him greater works than these, so that you may be amazed.20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him everything he himself does, and he wil show him evengreater things than these, works that will astonish you.
For just as the Father raises the dead and gives life, so also does the Son give life to whomever he wishes.21 Thus, as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so the Son gives life to anyone he chooses;
Nor does the Father judge anyone, but he has given all judgment to his Son,22 for the Father judges no one; he has entrusted all judgement to the Son,
so that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him.23 so that al may honour the Son as they honour the Father. Whoever refuses honour to the Son refuseshonour to the Father who sent him.
Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes in the one who sent me has eternal life and will not come to condemnation, but has passed from death to life.24 In al truth I tel you, whoever listens to my words, and believes in the one who sent me, has eternallife; without being brought to judgement such a person has passed from death to life.
Amen, amen, I say to you, the hour is coming and is now here when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live.25 In al truth I tel you, the hour is coming -- indeed it is already here -- when the dead wil hear the voiceof the Son of God, and al who hear it wil live.
For just as the Father has life in himself, so also he gave to his Son the possession of life in himself.26 For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself;
And he gave him power to exercise judgment, because he is the Son of Man.27 and, because he is the Son of man, has granted him power to give judgement.
Do not be amazed at this, because the hour is coming in which all who are in the tombs will hear his voice28 Do not be surprised at this, for the hour is coming when the dead wil leave their graves at the sound ofhis voice:
and will come out, those who have done good deeds to the resurrection of life, but those who have done wicked deeds to the resurrection of condemnation.29 those who did good will come forth to life; and those who did evil will come forth to judgement.
"I cannot do anything on my own; I judge as I hear, and my judgment is just, because I do not seek my own will but the will of the one who sent me.30 By myself I can do nothing; I can judge only as I am told to judge, and my judging is just, because Iseek to do not my own wil but the wil of him who sent me.
"If I testify on my own behalf, my testimony cannot be verified.31 Were I to testify on my own behalf, my testimony would not be true;
But there is another who testifies on my behalf, and I know that the testimony he gives on my behalf is true.32 but there is another witness who speaks on my behalf, and I know that his testimony is true.
You sent emissaries to John, and he testified to the truth.33 You sent messengers to John, and he gave his testimony to the truth-
I do not accept testimony from a human being, but I say this so that you may be saved.34 not that I depend on human testimony; no, it is for your salvation that I mention it.
He was a burning and shining lamp, and for a while you were content to rejoice in his light.35 John was a lamp lit and shining and for a time you were content to enjoy the light that he gave.
But I have testimony greater than John's. The works that the Father gave me to accomplish, these works that I perform testify on my behalf that the Father has sent me.36 But my testimony is greater than John's: the deeds my Father has given me to perform, these samedeeds of mine testify that the Father has sent me.
Moreover, the Father who sent me has testified on my behalf. But you have never heard his voice nor seen his form,37 Besides, the Father who sent me bears witness to me himself. You have never heard his voice, youhave never seen his shape,
and you do not have his word remaining in you, because you do not believe in the one whom he has sent.38 and his word finds no home in you because you do not believe in the one whom he has sent.
You search the scriptures, because you think you have eternal life through them; even they testify on my behalf.39 You pore over the scriptures, believing that in them you can find eternal life; it is these scriptures thattestify to me,
But you do not want to come to me to have life.40 and yet you refuse to come to me to receive life!
"I do not accept human praise;41 Human glory means nothing to me.
moreover, I know that you do not have the love of God in you.42 Besides, I know you too well: you have no love of God in you.
I came in the name of my Father, but you do not accept me; yet if another comes in his own name, you will accept him.43 I have come in the name of my Father and you refuse to accept me; if someone else should come inhis own name you would accept him.
How can you believe, when you accept praise from one another and do not seek the praise that comes from the only God?44 How can you believe, since you look to each other for glory and are not concerned with the glory thatcomes from the one God?
Do not think that I will accuse you before the Father: the one who will accuse you is Moses, in whom you have placed your hope.45 Do not imagine that I am going to accuse you before the Father: you have placed your hopes onMoses, and Moses wil be the one who accuses you.
For if you had believed Moses, you would have believed me, because he wrote about me.46 If you real y believed him you would believe me too, since it was about me that he was writing;
But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words?"47 but if you wil not believe what he wrote, how can you believe what I say?
