1 An admonition can be inopportune, and a man may be wise to hold his peace.	1 C'è un rimprovero che non è a tempo giusto, e c'è chi tace perché è sapiente.
2 It is much better to admonish than to lose one's temper, for one who admits his fault will be kept from disgrace.	2 E' meglio reclamare che covare la rabbia,
3 Like a eunuch lusting for intimacy with a maiden is he who does right under compulsion.	3 ma chi ammette la propria colpa evita il peggio.
4 One man is silent and is thought wise, another is talkative and is disliked.	4 Eunuco che brama deflorare una ragazza è chi vuole ottenere giustizia con la violenza.
5 One man is silent because he has nothing to say; another is silent, biding his time.	5 Chi tace sarà riconosciuto saggio ma è odiato chi parla troppo.
6 A wise man is silent till the right time comes, but a boasting fool ignores the proper time.	6 C'è chi tace perché non sa rispondere, e c'è chi tace in attesa del tempo giusto.
7 He who talks too much is detested; he who pretends to authority is hated.	7 L'uomo saggio tace fino al tempo giusto, il fanfarone e lo sciocco non sanno indugiare.
8 Some misfortunes bring success; some things gained are a man's loss.	8 Chi abbonda nel parlare sarà in abominio, e chi è presuntuoso sarà disprezzato.
9 Some gifts do one no good, and some must be paid back double.	9 Si può aver profitto dall'avversità e perdita da un colpo di fortuna.
10 Humiliation can follow fame, while from obscurity a man can lift up his head.	10 C'è generosità che non reca guadagno e c'è generosità che è ricambiata due volte.
11 A man may buy much for little, but pay for it seven times over.	11 C'è chi cerca gloria e trova umiliazione, e chi dall'umiliazione alza la testa.
12 A wise man makes himself popular by a few words, but fools pour forth their blandishments in vain.	12 C'è chi compra molto con poco, e chi lo paga sette volte.
13 A gift from a rogue will do you no good, for in his eyes his one gift is equal to seven.	13 Il saggio con poco si rende amabile, i favori dello stolto si versano a vuoto.
14 He gives little and criticizes often, and like a crier he shouts aloud. He lends today, he asks it back tomorrow; hateful indeed is such a man.	14 Il dono dello stolto non ti gioverà, egli attende ricompensa ad occhi sbarrati;
15 A fool has no friends, nor thanks for his generosity;	15 dà poco e fa molte rimostranze, aprendo la sua bocca come un banditore; oggi fa un prestito e domani lo richiede, quest'uomo è sempre malvisto.
16 Those who eat his bread have an evil tongue. How many times they laugh him to scorn!	16 Lo stolto dice: "Non ho amici, non c'è gratitudine per la mia generosità;
17 A fall to the ground is less sudden than a slip of the tongue; that is why the downfall of the wicked comes so quickly.	17 anche quelli che mangiano il mio pane sono lingue cattive". Quanti e quante volte ridono di lui!
18 Insipid food is the untimely tale; the unruly are always ready to offer it.	18 Meglio scivolare al suolo che con la lingua, perciò la caduta dei perversi verrà presto.
19 A proverb when spoken by a fool is unwelcome, for he does not utter it at the proper time.	19 Dall'uomo grossolano parole fuori tempo; queste si moltiplicano in bocca agli stolti.
20 A man through want may be unable to sin, yet in this tranquility he cannot rest.	20 Lo stolto che sentenzia sarà criticato, perché non parla a tempo opportuno.
21 One may lose his life through shame, and perish through a fool's intimidation.	21 C'è chi il bisogno trattiene dal peccare, così nel riposo è senza rimorsi.
22 A man makes a promise to a friend out of shame, and has him for his enemy needlessly.	22 C'è chi si perde a causa della vergogna, e chi si rovina per la faccia di uno stolto.
23 A lie is a foul blot in a man, yet it is constantly on the lips of the unruly.	23 C'è chi promette all'amico per vergogna, così l'avrà nemico senza motivo.
24 Better a thief than an inveterate liar, yet both will suffer disgrace;	24 La menzogna è nell'uomo macchia infame, ma abbonda sulla bocca degli stolti.
25 A liar's way leads to dishonor, his shame remains ever with him.	25 Un ladro vale più d'un bugiardo incorreggibile, ma la sorte d'entrambi è la perdizione.
26 A wise man advances himself by his words, a prudent man pleases the great.	26 Il vizio del bugiardo è un disonore, la vergogna sarà sempre con lui.
27 He who works his land has abundant crops, he who pleases the great is pardoned his faults.	27 Il saggio si attira la stima con la parola e l'uomo di senno piacerà ai grandi.
28 Favors and gifts blind the eyes; like a muzzle over the mouth they silence reproof.	28 Chi lavora la terra fa crescere il suo raccolto e chi piace ai grandi trova discolpa.
29 Hidden wisdom and unseen treasure-- of what value is either?	29 L'ospitalità e i doni accecano i saggi, sono museruola in bocca che frena il rimprovero.
30 Better the man who hides his folly than the one who hides his wisdom.	30 Sapienza nascosta e tesoro invisibile, non sono entrambi inutili?
	31 Val più l'uomo che nasconde la stoltezza che l'uomo che nasconde la sapienza.
