NEW AMERICAN BIBLELXX
Then Job answered and said:1 υπολαβων δε ιωβ λεγει
I know well that it is so; but how can a man be justified before God?2 επ' αληθειας οιδα οτι ουτως εστιν πως γαρ εσται δικαιος βροτος παρα κυριω
Should one wish to contend with him, he could not answer him once in a thousand times.3 εαν γαρ βουληται κριθηναι αυτω ου μη υπακουση αυτω ινα μη αντειπη προς ενα λογον αυτου εκ χιλιων
God is wise in heart and mighty in strength; who has withstood him and remained unscathed?4 σοφος γαρ εστιν διανοια κραταιος τε και μεγας τις σκληρος γενομενος εναντιον αυτου υπεμεινεν
He removes the mountains before they know it; he overturns them in his anger.5 ο παλαιων ορη και ουκ οιδασιν ο καταστρεφων αυτα οργη
He shakes the earth out of its place, and the pillars beneath it tremble.6 ο σειων την υπ' ουρανον εκ θεμελιων οι δε στυλοι αυτης σαλευονται
He commands the sun, and it rises not; he seals up the stars.7 ο λεγων τω ηλιω και ουκ ανατελλει κατα δε αστρων κατασφραγιζει
He alone stretches out the heavens and treads upon the crests of the sea.8 ο τανυσας τον ουρανον μονος και περιπατων ως επ' εδαφους επι θαλασσης
He made the Bear and Orion, the Pleiades and the constellations of the south;9 ο ποιων πλειαδα και εσπερον και αρκτουρον και ταμιεια νοτου
He does great things past finding out, marvelous things beyond reckoning.10 ο ποιων μεγαλα και ανεξιχνιαστα ενδοξα τε και εξαισια ων ουκ εστιν αριθμος
Should he come near me, I see him not; should he pass by, I am not aware of him;11 εαν υπερβη με ου μη ιδω και εαν παρελθη με ουδ' ως εγνων
Should he seize me forcibly, who can say him nay? Who can say to him, "What are you doing?"12 εαν απαλλαξη τις αποστρεψει η τις ερει αυτω τι εποιησας
He is God and he does not relent; the helpers of Rahab bow beneath him.13 αυτος γαρ απεστραπται οργην υπ' αυτου εκαμφθησαν κητη τα υπ' ουρανον
How much less shall I give him any answer, or choose out arguments against him!14 εαν δε μου υπακουσηται η διακρινει τα ρηματα μου
Even though I were right, I could not answer him, but should rather beg for what was due me.15 εαν τε γαρ ω δικαιος ουκ εισακουσεται μου του κριματος αυτου δεηθησομαι
If I appealed to him and he answered my call, I could not believe that he would hearken to my words;16 εαν τε καλεσω και υπακουση ου πιστευω οτι εισακηκοεν μου
With a tempest he might overwhelm me, and multiply my wounds without cause;17 μη γνοφω με εκτριψη πολλα δε μου τα συντριμματα πεποιηκεν δια κενης
He need not suffer me to draw breath, but might fill me with bitter griefs.18 ουκ εα γαρ με αναπνευσαι ενεπλησεν δε με πικριας
If it be a question of strength, he is mighty; and if of judgment, who will call him to account?19 οτι μεν γαρ ισχυι κρατει τις ουν κριματι αυτου αντιστησεται
Though I were right, my own mouth might condemn me; were I innocent, he might put me in the wrong.20 εαν γαρ ω δικαιος το στομα μου ασεβησει εαν τε ω αμεμπτος σκολιος αποβησομαι
Though I am innocent, I myself cannot know it; I despise my life.21 ειτε γαρ ησεβησα ουκ οιδα τη ψυχη πλην οτι αφαιρειται μου η ζωη
It is all one! therefore I say: Both the innocent and the wicked he destroys.22 διο ειπον μεγαν και δυναστην απολλυει οργη
When the scourge slays suddenly, he laughs at the despair of the innocent.23 οτι φαυλοι εν θανατω εξαισιω αλλα δικαιοι καταγελωνται
The earth is given into the hands of the wicked; he covers the faces of its judges. If it is not he, who then is it?24 παραδεδονται γαρ εις χειρας ασεβους προσωπα κριτων αυτης συγκαλυπτει ει δε μη αυτος τις εστιν
My days are swifter than a runner, they flee away; they see no happiness;25 ο δε βιος μου εστιν ελαφροτερος δρομεως απεδρασαν και ουκ ειδοσαν
They shoot by like skiffs of reed, like an eagle swooping upon its prey.26 η και εστιν ναυσιν ιχνος οδου η αετου πετομενου ζητουντος βοραν
If I say: I will forget my complaining, I will lay aside my sadness and be of good cheer,27 εαν τε γαρ ειπω επιλησομαι λαλων συγκυψας τω προσωπω στεναξω
Then I am in dread of all my pains; I know that you will not hold me innocent.28 σειομαι πασιν τοις μελεσιν οιδα γαρ οτι ουκ αθωον με εασεις
If I must be accounted guilty, why then should I strive in vain?29 επειδη δε ειμι ασεβης δια τι ουκ απεθανον
If I should wash myself with snow and cleanse my hands with lye,30 εαν γαρ απολουσωμαι χιονι και αποκαθαρωμαι χερσιν καθαραις
Yet you would plunge me in the ditch, so that my garments would abhor me.31 ικανως εν ρυπω με εβαψας εβδελυξατο δε με η στολη
For he is not a man like myself, that I should answer him, that we should come together in judgment.32 ου γαρ ει ανθρωπος κατ' εμε ω αντικρινουμαι ινα ελθωμεν ομοθυμαδον εις κρισιν
Would that there were an arbiter between us, who could lay his hand upon us both33 ειθε ην ο μεσιτης ημων και ελεγχων και διακουων ανα μεσον αμφοτερων
and withdraw his rod from me. Would that his terrors did not frighten me;34 απαλλαξατω απ' εμου την ραβδον ο δε φοβος αυτου μη με στροβειτω
that I might speak without being afraid of him. Since this is not the case with me,35 και ου μη φοβηθω αλλα λαλησω ου γαρ ουτω συνεπισταμαι
