MODERN HEBREW BIBLE	NEW JERUSALEM
1 ויהי כאשר ישב דויד בביתו ויאמר דויד אל נתן הנביא הנה אנכי יושב בבית הארזים וארון ברית יהוה תחת יריעות	1 It happened, once David had settled into his palace, that David said to the prophet Nathan, 'Here am Iliving in a cedar-wood palace, while the ark of the covenant of Yahweh is under awnings.'
2 ויאמר נתן אל דויד כל אשר בלבבך עשה כי האלהים עמך	2 Nathan said to David, 'Do whatever you have in mind, for God is with you.'
3 ויהי בלילה ההוא ויהי דבר אלהים אל נתן לאמר	3 But that very night the word of God came to Nathan, as fol ows:
4 לך ואמרת אל דויד עבדי כה אמר יהוה לא אתה תבנה לי הבית לשבת	4 'Go and tell my servant David, "Yahweh says this: You must not build a temple for me to live in.
5 כי לא ישבתי בבית מן היום אשר העליתי את ישראל עד היום הזה ואהיה מאהל אל אהל וממשכן	5 I have never lived in a house from the day when I brought Israel out until today, but have kepttravel ing from tent to tent and from shelter to shelter.
6 בכל אשר התהלכתי בכל ישראל הדבר דברתי את אחד שפטי ישראל אשר צויתי לרעות את עמי לאמר למה לא בניתם לי בית ארזים	6 In al my travels with al Israel, did I say to any of the judges of Israel, whom I had commanded toshepherd my people: Why do you not build me a cedar-wood temple?
7 ועתה כה תאמר לעבדי לדויד כה אמר יהוה צבאות אני לקחתיך מן הנוה מן אחרי הצאן להיות נגיד על עמי ישראל	7 This is what you must say to my servant David: Yahweh Sabaoth says this: I took you from thepasture, from following the sheep, to be leader of my people Israel.
8 ואהיה עמך בכל אשר הלכת ואכרית את כל אויביך מפניך ועשיתי לך שם כשם הגדולים אשר בארץ	8 I have been with you wherever you went; I have got rid of al your enemies for you. I am going to makeyour fame like that of the greatest men on earth.
9 ושמתי מקום לעמי ישראל ונטעתיהו ושכן תחתיו ולא ירגז עוד ולא יוסיפו בני עולה לבלתו כאשר בראשונה	9 I am going to provide a place for my people Israel; I shal plant them there and there they will live andnever be disturbed again; nor wil they be oppressed by the wicked as they were in former times
10 ולמימים אשר צויתי שפטים על עמי ישראל והכנעתי את כל אויביך ואגד לך ובית יבנה לך יהוה	10 ever since I instituted judges to govern my people Israel; I shall subdue al your enemies. Yahwehmoreover tel s you that he wil build you a dynasty.
11 והיה כי מלאו ימיך ללכת עם אבתיך והקימותי את זרעך אחריך אשר יהיה מבניך והכינותי את מלכותו	11 And when your days are over and you have gone to join your ancestors, I shall appoint your heir --who wil be one of your sons -- to succeed you, and I shall make his sovereignty secure.
12 הוא יבנה לי בית וכננתי את כסאו עד עולם	12 He wil build a temple for me and I shal make his throne secure for ever.
13 אני אהיה לו לאב והוא יהיה לי לבן וחסדי לא אסיר מעמו כאשר הסירותי מאשר היה לפניך	13 I shal be his father and he wil be my son, and I shal not withdraw my favour from him, as I withdrewit from your predecessor.
14 והעמדתיהו בביתי ובמלכותי עד העולם וכסאו יהיה נכון עד עולם	14 I shal set him over my temple and kingdom for ever and his throne wil be for ever secure." '
15 ככל הדברים האלה וככל החזון הזה כן דבר נתן אל דויד	15 Nathan related al these words and this whole revelation to David.
16 ויבא המלך דויד וישב לפני יהוה ויאמר מי אני יהוה אלהים ומי ביתי כי הביאתני עד הלם	16 King David then went in, sat down in Yahweh's presence and said: 'Who am I, Yahweh God, andwhat is my lineage, that you have led me as far as this?
17 ותקטן זאת בעיניך אלהים ותדבר על בית עבדך למרחוק וראיתני כתור האדם המעלה יהוה אלהים	17 Yet, to you, O God, this seemed too little, and now you extend your promises for your servant'sfamily into the distant future, making me see as it were a whole succession of men, and it is Yahweh Godhimself who raises it up.
18 מה יוסיף עוד דויד אליך לכבוד את עבדך ואתה את עבדך ידעת	18 What more can David reply to you for the honour you have given to your servant? You yourself havesingled out your servant.
19 יהוה בעבור עבדך וכלבך עשית את כל הגדולה הזאת להדיע את כל הגדלות	19 For your servant, and since you were so inclined, you have had the generosity to reveal al thisgreatness to come.
20 יהוה אין כמוך ואין אלהים זולתך בכל אשר שמענו באזנינו	20 Yahweh, there is no one like you, no God but you alone, as everything that we have heard confirms.
21 ומי כעמך ישראל גוי אחד בארץ אשר הלך האלהים לפדות לו עם לשום לך שם גדלות ונראות לגרש מפני עמך אשר פדית ממצרים גוים	21 Is there another people on earth like your people Israel, whom a god has proceeded to redeem, tomake them his people and to make them famous and do for them great and terrible deeds, by driving out nationsbefore your people, whom you redeemed from Egypt? -
22 ותתן את עמך ישראל לך לעם עד עולם ואתה יהוה היית להם לאלהים	22 for you made your people Israel your own people for ever and you, Yahweh, became their God.
23 ועתה יהוה הדבר אשר דברת על עבדך ועל ביתו יאמן עד עולם ועשה כאשר דברת	23 'Now, Yahweh, may the promise which you have made for your servant and as regards his familyhold good for ever, and do as you have said.
24 ויאמן ויגדל שמך עד עולם לאמר יהוה צבאות אלהי ישראל אלהים לישראל ובית דויד עבדך נכון לפניך	24 May it hold good, so your name wil be exalted for ever and people wil say, "Israel's God is YahwehSabaoth; he is God for Israel." Your servant David's dynasty will be secure before you
25 כי אתה אלהי גלית את אזן עבדך לבנות לו בית על כן מצא עבדך להתפלל לפניך	25 since you, my God, have disclosed to your servant that you are going to build him a dynasty. Hence,your servant has ventured to offer this prayer to you.
26 ועתה יהוה אתה הוא האלהים ותדבר על עבדך הטובה הזאת	26 Yes, Yahweh, you are God indeed, and you have made this generous promise to your servant.
27 ועתה הואלת לברך את בית עבדך להיות לעולם לפניך כי אתה יהוה ברכת ומברך לעולם	27 What is more, you have deigned to bless your servant's dynasty, so that it may remain for everbefore you; and since you, Yahweh, have blessed it, blessed will it be for ever.'
