1 Now Judas had heard of the the Romans, that they were mighty and valiant men, and such as would lovingly accept all that joined themselves unto them, and make a league of amity with all that came unto them;	1 Judas apprit alors le nom des Romains, et il sut qu'ils étaient puissants en forces, qu'ils acquiesçaient à tout ce qu'on leur demandait, qu'ils avaient fait amitié avec tous ceux qui s'étaient approchés d'eux, et qu'ils étaient puissants en forces.
2 And that they were men of great valour. It was told him also of their wars and noble acts which they had done among the Galatians, and how they had conquered them, and brought them under tribute;	2 On apprit aussi leurs combats et les grandes actions qu'ils avaient accomplies dans la Galatie, et comment ils s'en étaient rendus maîtres et l'avaient rendue tributaire;
3 And what they had done in the country of Spain, for the winning of the mines of the silver and gold which is there;	3 et tout ce qu'ils avaient fait dans le pays d'Espagne, et qu'ils avaient réduit en leur puissance les mines d'or et d'argent qui s'y trouvait, et avaient conquis toute la contrée par leur sagesse et leur patience;
4 And that by their policy and patience they had conquered all the place, though it were very far from them; and the kings also that came against them from the uttermost part of the earth, till they had discomfited them, and given them a great overthrow, so that the rest did give them tribute every year:	4 qu'ils s'étaient assujetti des régions très éloignées d'eux, et des rois qui avaient marché contre eux des extrémités de la terre, et qu'ils les avaient frappés d'une grande plaie, et que les autres leur payaient tribut tous les ans;
5 Beside this, how they had discomfited in battle Philip, and Perseus, king of the Citims, with others that lifted up themselves against them, and had overcome them:	5 qu'ils avaient vaincu à la guerre Philippe, et Perse, roi des Cétéens, et les autres qui avaient pris les armes contre eux, et qu'ils les avaient soumis;
6 How also Antiochus the great king of Asia, that came against them in battle, having an hundred and twenty elephants, with horsemen, and chariots, and a very great army, was discomfited by them;	6 qu'Antiochus le Grand, roi d'Asie, qui les avait attaqués avec cent vingt éléphants, de la cavalerie, des chars et une très grande armée, avait été écrasé par eux;
7 And how they took him alive, and covenanted that he and such as reigned after him should pay a great tribute, and give hostages, and that which was agreed upon,	7 qu'ils l'avaient pris vif et l'avaient obligé, lui et ceux qui régneraient après lui, de payer un grand tribut, et de donner des otages et ce dont ils étaient convenus,
8 And the country of India, and Media and Lydia and of the goodliest countries, which they took of him, and gave to king Eumenes:	8 et le pays des Indiens, des Mèdes et des Lydiens, les plus belles de leurs provinces, et qu'ils les avaient données au roi Eumène, après les avoir reçues;
9 Moreover how the Grecians had determined to come and destroy them;	9 que ceux de la Grèce avaient voulu marcher contre eux pour les perdre, mais que ce projet leur fut connu,
10 And that they, having knowledge thereof sent against them a certain captain, and fighting with them slew many of them, and carried away captives their wives and their children, and spoiled them, and took possession of their lands, and pulled down their strong holds, and brought them to be their servants unto this day:	10 et qu'ils avaient envoyé contre eux un seul de leurs chefs, qu'ils avaient combattu contre eux et avaient tué un grand nombre, qu'ils avaient emmené leurs femmes et leurs enfants captifs, qu'ils les avaient pillés, et avaient assujetti leur pays, et détruit leurs murailles, et qu'ils les avaient réduits en servitude, comme ils sont encore aujourd'hui;
11 It was told him besides, how they destroyed and brought under their dominion all other kingdoms and isles that at any time resisted them;	11 qu'ils avaient ruiné et soumis à leur empire les autres royaumes, et les îles qui leur avaient autrefois résisté;
12 But with their friends and such as relied upon them they kept amity: and that they had conquered kingdoms both far and nigh, insomuch as all that heard of their name were afraid of them:	12 mais qu'ils conservaient les alliances faites avec leurs amis, et avec ceux qui s'étaient donnés à eux; qu'ils avaient conquis des royaumes voisins et éloignés, parce que tous ceux qui entendaient leur nom les redoutaient;
13 Also that, whom they would help to a kingdom, those reign; and whom again they would, they displace: finally, that they were greatly exalted:	13 que ceux qu'ils voulaient faire régner régnaient, et qu'ils dépossédaient du royaume ceux qu'ils voulaient, et qu'ils étaient élevés très haut;
14 Yet for all this none of them wore a crown or was clothed in purple, to be magnified thereby:	14 et que malgré tout cela, nul d'entre eux ne portait le diadème et ne se revêtait de la pourpre, pour paraître plus grand par là;
15 Moreover how they had made for themselves a senate house, wherein three hundred and twenty men sat in council daily, consulting alway for the people, to the end they might be well ordered:	15 et qu'ils avaient établi un sénat parmi eux, et qu'ils consultaient tous les jours les trois cent vingt sénateurs, qui tenaient toujours conseil sur les affaires de la multitude, afin d'agir dignement;
16 And that they committed their government to one man every year, who ruled over all their country, and that all were obedient to that one, and that there was neither envy nor emmulation among them.	16 et qu'il confiaient chaque année leur magistrature à un seul homme, pour dominer sur tout leur territoire; et que tous obéissaient à un seul, sans qu'il y eût d'envie ni de jalousie parmi eux.
17 In consideration of these things, Judas chose Eupolemus the son of John, the son of Accos, and Jason the son of Eleazar, and sent them to Rome, to make a league of amity and confederacy with them,	17 Judas choisit Eupolémus, fils de Jean, fils de Jacob, et Jason, fils d'Eléazar; et il les envoya à Rome pour contracter amitié et alliance avec eux,
18 And to intreat them that they would take the yoke from them; for they saw that the kingdom of the Grecians did oppress Israel with servitude.	18 et pour qu'ils les délivrassent du joug des Grecs, car ils voyaient qu'ils réduisaient en servitude le royaume d'Israël.
19 They went therefore to Rome, which was a very great journey, and came into the senate, where they spake and said.	19 Ils partirent pour Rome, par un très long chemin; et ils entrèrent au sénat, et dirent:
20 Judas Maccabeus with his brethren, and the people of the Jews, have sent us unto you, to make a confederacy and peace with you, and that we might be registered your confederates and friends.	20 Judas Machabée, et ses frères, et le peuple des Juifs, nous ont envoyés vers vous pour faire avec vous alliance et paix, et pour que vous nous inscriviez parmi vos alliés et vos amis.
21 So that matter pleased the Romans well.	21 Cette proposition leur plut.
22 And this is the copy of the epistle which the senate wrote back again in tables of brass, and sent to Jerusalem, that there they might have by them a memorial of peace and confederacy:	22 Et voici le rescrit qu'ils gravèrent sur des tables d'airain, et qu'ils envoyèrent à Jérusalem, pour qu'il demeurât chez eux comme un monument de paix et d'alliance;
23 Good success be to the Romans, and to the people of the Jews, by sea and by land for ever: the sword also and enemy be far from them,	23 Que les Romains et la nation des Juifs soient comblés de biens à jamais sur mer et sur terre, et que l'épée et l'ennemi s'éloignent d'eux!
24 If there come first any war upon the Romans or any of their confederates throughout all their dominion,	24 S'il survient une guerre aux Romains d'abord ou à tous leurs alliés, dans toute leur domination,
25 The people of the Jews shall help them, as the time shall be appointed, with all their heart:	25 la nation des Juifs leur portera secours de plein coeur, selon que le temps le permettra;
26 Neither shall they give any thing unto them that make war upon them, or aid them with victuals, weapons, money, or ships, as it hath seemed good unto the Romans; but they shall keep their covenants without taking any thing therefore.	26 et ils ne donneront et ne fourniront aux combattants ni blé, ni armes, ni argent, ni vaisseaux, ainsi qu'il plu aux Romains; et ils observeront leurs ordres, sans rien recevoir d'eux.
27 In the same manner also, if war come first upon the nation of the Jews, the Romans shall help them with all their heart, according as the time shall be appointed them:	27 Et de même, s'il survient d'abord une guerre au peuple juif, les Romains les aideront de tout coeur, selon que le temps le leur permettra;
28 Neither shall victuals be given to them that take part against them, or weapons, or money, or ships, as it hath seemed good to the Romans; but they shall keep their covenants, and that without deceit.	28 et les Juifs ne fourniront aux troupes auxiliaires ni blé, ni armes, ni argent, ni vaisseaux, car c'est ainsi qui'il a plu aux Romains; et ils observeront leurs ordres sincèrement.
29 According to these articles did the Romans make a covenant with the people of the Jews.	29 C'est là l'accord que les Romains font avec les Juifs.
30 Howbeit if hereafter the one party or the other shall think to meet to add or diminish any thing, they may do it at their pleasures, and whatsoever they shall add or take away shall be ratified.	30 Que si par la suite les uns ou les autres veulent enlever ou ajouter quelque chose à ces détails, ils le feront de concert; et tout ce qu'ils ajouteront ou enlèveront, sera ratifié.
31 And as touching the evils that Demetrius doeth to the Jews, we have written unto him, saying, Wherefore thou made thy yoke heavy upon our friends and confederates the Jews?	31 Et quant aux maux que le roi Démétrius a faits aux Juifs, nous lui avons écrit en ces termes: Pourquoi as-tu fait peser ton joug sur nos amis et nos alliés, les Juifs?
32 If therefore they complain any more against thee, we will do them justice, and fight with thee by sea and by land.	32 Si donc ils s'adressent à nous de nouveau, nous leur ferons justice contre toi, et nous combattrons contre toi sur mer et sur terre.
