1 Now when Simon heard that Tryphon had gathered together a great host to invade the land of Judea, and destroy it,	1 Ma Simone inteso che Trifone aveva radunato un grande esercito per entrare nella terra di Giuda e desolarla,
2 And saw that the people was in great trembling and fear, he went up to Jerusalem, and gathered the people together,	2 visto che la gente era impaurita e tremante, andò a Gerusalemme, adunò il popolo,
3 And gave them exhortation, saying, Ye yourselves know what great things I, and my brethren, and my father's house, have done for the laws and the sanctuary, the battles also and troubles which we have seen.	3 li rianimò e disse: « Voi sapete quanto io, i miei fratelli e la casa di mio padre abbiam combattuto per la legge, pel santuario, e in quali angustie ci siamo trovati.
4 By reason whereof all my brethren are slain for Israel's sake, and I am left alone.	4 Per questa causa, per Israele son periti tutti i miei fratelli, e son rimasto io solo.
5 Now therefore be it far from me, that I should spare mine own life in any time of trouble: for I am no better than my brethren.	5 Or non sia mai ch'io risparmi la mia vita, qualunque sia il tempo dell'afflizione, perchè io non valgo più dei miei fratelli.
6 Doubtless I will avenge my nation, and the sanctuary, and our wives, and our children: for all the heathen are gathered to destroy us of very malice.	6 Io dunque difenderò il mio popolo, il santuario, i nostri figli e le nostre mogli, or che tutte le genti, per l'odio che ci portano, si sono unite per distruggerci ».
7 Now as soon as the people heard these words, their spirit revived.	7 A queste parole s'infiammò lo spirito del popolo,
8 And they answered with a loud voice, saying, Thou shalt be our leader instead of Judas and Jonathan thy brother.	8 e risposero ad alta voce: « Tu sei il nostro duce in luogo di Giuda e di Gionata tuoi fratelli:
9 Fight thou our battles, and whatsoever, thou commandest us, that will we do.	9 combatti per noi, che obbediremo ad ogni tuo comando ».
10 So then he gathered together all the men of war, and made haste to finish the walls of Jerusalem, and he fortified it round about.	10 Allora Simone, radunati tutti i guerrieri, si affrettò a terminare tutte le mura di Gerusalemme, e la fortificò da tutte le parti;
11 Also he sent Jonathan the son of Absolom, and with him a great power, to Joppa: who casting out them that were therein remained there in it.	11 poi mandò Gionata figlio di Absalom a loppe con nuovi eserciti, e, cacciati quelli che vi eran dentro, vi si fermò.
12 So Tryphon removed from Ptolemaus with a great power to invade the land of Judea, and Jonathan was with him in ward.	12 E Trifone partì con numeroso esercito da Tolemaide per invadere la terra di Giuda, menando seco Gionata prigioniero.
13 But Simon pitched his tents at Adida, over against the plain.	13 Simone pose il campo a Addus, di faccia alla pianura.
14 Now when Tryphon knew that Simon was risen up instead of his brother Jonathan, and meant to join battle with him, he sent messengers unto him, saying,	14 Quando Trifone seppe che Simone era sorto al posto del suo fratello Gionata, e che era pronto per dargli battaglia, gli mandò ambasciatori a fargli
15 Whereas we have Jonathan thy brother in hold, it is for money that he is owing unto the king's treasure, concerning the business that was committed unto him.	15 dire: « È per l'argento di cui era debitore al tesoro del re per ragione degli affari da lui amministrati che noi abbiamo ritenuto prigioniero Gionata tuo fratello.
16 Wherefore now send an hundred talents of silver, and two of his sons for hostages, that when he is at liberty he may not revolt from us, and we will let him go.	16 Or tu manda cento talenti d'argento e i due suoi figli in ostaggio, affinchè, liberato, non abbandoni il nostro partito, e noi lo rimanderemo ».
17 Hereupon Simon, albeit he perceived that they spake deceitfully unto him yet sent he the money and the children, lest peradventure he should procure to himself great hatred of the people:	17 Simone ben comprese che (Trifone) gli parlava con frode, non ostante ordinò di consegnare il danaro e i fanciulli, per non tirarsi addosso l'inimicizia del popolo, che avrebbe detto:
18 Who might have said, Because I sent him not the money and the children, therefore is Jonathan dead.	18 « Perchè non ha mandato il danaro e i fanciulli,per questo (Gionata) è morto ».
19 So he sent them the children and the hundred talents: howbeit Tryphon dissembled neither would he let Jonathan go.	19 Mandò dunque i fanciulli e i cento talenti; ma (Trifone) mancò di parola, e non rimise in libertà Gionata.
20 And after this came Tryphon to invade the land, and destroy it, going round about by the way that leadeth unto Adora: but Simon and his host marched against him in every place, wheresoever he went.	20 In seguito Trifone si avanzò mila regione per devastarla, e presero la via che mena ad Ador, ma Simone col suo esercito teneva loro dietro, dovunque andassero.
21 Now they that were in the tower sent messengers unto Tryphon, to the end that he should hasten his coming unto them by the wilderness, and send them victuals.	21 Or quelli che erano nella cittadella mandarono a dire a Trifone che s'affrettasse a venir dalla parte del deserto, e mandasse loro dei viveri.
22 Wherefore Tryphon made ready all his horsemen to come that night: but there fell a very great snow, by reason whereof he came not. So he departed, and came into the country of Galaad.	22 E Trifone mise in ordine tutta la cavalleria, per arrivare in quella notte; ma essendo la neve molto alta, non potè entrare nella terra di Galaad.
23 And when he came near to Bascama he slew Jonathan, who was buried there.	23 Quando fu vicino a Bsacaman, vi uccise Gionata e i suoi figlioli;
24 Afterward Tryphon returned and went into his own land.	24 poi Trifone si volse indietro e tornò al suo paese.
25 Then sent Simon, and took the bones of Jonathan his brother, and buried them in Modin, the city of his fathers.	25 E Simone mandò a prendere le ossa di Gionata suo fratello, e le seppellì in Modin, città dei suoi padri.
26 And all Israel made great lamentation for him, and bewailed him many days.	26 E tutto Israele fece gran duolo per Gionata, e lo pianse per molti giorni.
27 Simon also built a monument upon the sepulchre of his father and his brethren, and raised it aloft to the sight, with hewn stone behind and before.	27 E sopra il sepolcro di suo padre e dei suoi fratelli, Simone innalzò un fabbricato da vedersi (da lontano) di pietra tagliata, tanto davanti che di dietro.
28 Moreover he set up seven pyramids, one against another, for his father, and his mother, and his four brethren.	28 E vi collocò sette piramidi; l'una di faccia all'altra, al padre, alla madre e ai quattro fratelli.
29 And in these he made cunning devices, about the which he set great pillars, and upon the pillars he made all their armour for a perpetual memory, and by the armour ships carved, that they might be seen of all that sail on the sea.	29 E intorno ad esse pose delle grandi colonne, e sopra le colonne delle armi, ad eterna memoria, e presso le armi delle navi scolpite, da esser vedute da tutti quelli che navigassero quel mare.
30 This is the sepulchre which he made at Modin, and it standeth yet unto this day.	30 Tale è fino al giorno d'oggi il sepolcro che egli fece in Modin. Simone si riavvicina al re Demetrio II.
31 Now Tryphon dealt deceitfully with the young king Antiochus, and slew him.	31 Or Trifone, essendo in viaggio col giovane re Antioco, lo uccise a tradimento,
32 And he reigned in his stead, and crowned himself king of Asia, and brought a great calamity upon the land.	32 e regnò in sua vece, si cinse di diadema dell'Asia e riempì il paese di stragi.
33 Then Simon built up the strong holds in Judea, and fenced them about with high towers, and great walls, and gates, and bars, and laid up victuals therein.	33 Ma Simone riparò le fortezze della Giudea, e le munì di alte torri, di grandi mura, di porte e di sbarre, e pose dei viveri nelle fortezze.
34 Moreover Simon chose men, and sent to king Demetrius, to the end he should give the land an immunity, because all that Tryphon did was to spoil.	34 Poi Simone, scelti degli uomini, li mandò al re Demetrio, a pregarlo di concedere l'immunità al paese, perchè tutti gli atti di Trifone avevano avuto per fine il latrocinio.
35 Unto whom king Demetrius answered and wrote after this manner:	35 E il re Demetrio rispose a tale richiesta, e scrisse la seguente lettera:
36 King Demetrius unto Simon the high priest, and friend of kings, as also unto the elders and nation of the Jews, sendeth greeting:	36 « Il re Demetrio a Simone, sommo sacerdote, amico dei re, e agli anziani e alla nazione dei Giudei, salute.
37 The golden crown, and the scarlet robe, which ye sent unto us, we have received: and we are ready to make a stedfast peace with you, yea, and to write unto our officers, to confirm the immunities which we have granted.	37 Abbiamo ricevuto la corona d'oro e la palma da voi mandata, e siamo disposti a fare con voi una gran pace, e a scrivere agli agenti del re di condonarvi quello che noi vi abbiamo condonato.
38 And whatsoever covenants we have made with you shall stand; and the strong holds, which ye have builded, shall be your own.	38 Tutto quello che vi abbiamo concesso resta stabilito: le fortezze da voi edificate siano vostre.
39 As for any oversight or fault committed unto this day, we forgive it, and the crown tax also, which ye owe us: and if there were any other tribute paid in Jerusalem, it shall no more be paid.	39 Vi condoniamo anche le dimenticanze, le offese, fino a questo giorno, e la corona che dovevate dare, e se vi fosse qualche altro tributo in Gerusalemme, non esista più come tributo.
40 And look who are meet among you to be in our court, let then be enrolled, and let there be peace betwixt us.	40 E se vi è tra voi qualcuno capace di essere arruolato nelle nostre milizie, si arruoli, e regni tra di noi la pace ».
41 Thus the yoke of the heathen was taken away from Israel in the hundred and seventieth year.	41 L'anno centosettanta, Israele scosse il giogo dei Greci,
42 Then the people of Israel began to write in their instruments and contracts, In the first year of Simon the high priest, the governor and leader of the Jews.	42 e il popolo cominciò a scrivere sugli atti e i contratti: « Nell'anno primo, sotto Simone sommo sacerdote, gran duce e principe dei Giudei ».
43 In those days Simon camped against Gaza and besieged it round about; he made also an engine of war, and set it by the city, and battered a certain tower, and took it.	43 In quel tempo Simone andò contro Gaza, la circondò coll'esercito, alzò le macchine e le spinse contro la città, abbattè una torre e la prese.
44 And they that were in the engine leaped into the city; whereupon there was a great uproar in the city:	44 Allora quelli che erano in una delle macchine entrarono con furia nella città, la quale fu in gran tumulto.
45 Insomuch as the people of the city rent their clothes, and climbed upon the walls with their wives and children, and cried with a loud voice, beseeching Simon to grant them peace.	45 I cittadini salirono colle mogli e coi figlioli sullo mura, e, colle vesti stracciate, gridavano ad alta voce, scongiurando Simone a conceder loro la pace,
46 And they said, Deal not with us according to our wickedness, but according to thy mercy.	46 e dicevano: « Non ci trattare secondo la nostra malvagità, ma secondo la tua clemenza».
47 So Simon was appeased toward them, and fought no more against them, but put them out of the city, and cleansed the houses wherein the idols were, and so entered into it with songs and thanksgiving.	47 Simone si lasciò piegare, e non li trattò a rigor di guerra; ma però li cacciò dalla città, purificò le case dove erano stati gl'idoli, e poi v'entrò dentro cantando inni di lode al Signore.
48 Yea, he put all uncleanness out of it, and placed such men there as would keep the law, and made it stronger than it was before, and built therein a dwellingplace for himself.	48 Toltene tutte le immondezze, la fece abitare da gente che osservasse la legge, la fortificò e vi si fece una casa.
49 They also of the tower in Jerusalem were kept so strait, that they could neither come forth, nor go into the country, nor buy, nor sell: wherefore they were in great distress for want of victuals, and a great number of them perished through famine.	49 Intanto quelli che stavano nella cittadella di Gerusalemme, non potendo andare e venire nel paese, nè vendere, nè comprare, si ridussero alla fame, e molti di essi morirono di fame.
50 Then cried they to Simon, beseeching him to be at one with them: which thing he granted them; and when he had put them out from thence, he cleansed the tower from pollutions:	50 Allora ad alte grida chiesero a Simone la pace, che egli concesse; ma li cacciò di là, e purificò la cittadella dalle immondezze.
51 And entered into it the three and twentieth day of the second month in the hundred seventy and first year, with thanksgiving, and branches of palm trees, and with harps, and cymbals, and with viols, and hymns, and songs: because there was destroyed a great enemy out of Israel.	51 I Giudei vi entrarono dentro ai ventitré del secondo mese, l'anno centosettant'uno, con rami di palme, cetre, cembali, arpe, e inni e cantici, perchè era stato tolto via un gran nemico da Israele.
52 He ordained also that that day should be kept every year with gladness. Moreover the hill of the temple that was by the tower he made stronger than it was, and there he dwelt himself with his company.	52 Fu stabilito di festeggiare ogni anno questi giorni con gioia.
53 And when Simon saw that John his son was a valiant man, he made him captain of all the hosts; and he dwelt in Gazera.	53 Simone fortificò il monte del tempio che era a lato della cittadella, e vi prese dimora coi suoi.
	54 Avendo poi riconosciuto che Giovanni suo figliolo era uomo di grande valore, gli dette il comando di tutto l'esercito, con Gazara per residenza.
