1 Now when Simon heard that Tryphon had gathered together a great host to invade the land of Judea, and destroy it,	1 Supo Simón que había juntado Trifón un ejército numeroso para ir a devastar el país de Judá.
2 And saw that the people was in great trembling and fear, he went up to Jerusalem, and gathered the people together,	2 Viendo al pueblo espantado y medroso, subió a Jerusalén, reunió al pueblo
3 And gave them exhortation, saying, Ye yourselves know what great things I, and my brethren, and my father's house, have done for the laws and the sanctuary, the battles also and troubles which we have seen.	3 y le exhortó diciendo: «Vosotros sabéis todo lo que hemos hecho mis hermanos, la casa de mi padre y yo por la Ley y el Lugar Santo, y las guerras y tribulaciones que hemos sufrido.
4 By reason whereof all my brethren are slain for Israel's sake, and I am left alone.	4 Por esta causa, por Israel, han muerto mis hermanos todos y he quedado yo solo.
5 Now therefore be it far from me, that I should spare mine own life in any time of trouble: for I am no better than my brethren.	5 Lejos de mí ahora mirar por salvar mi vida en cualquier tiempo de angustia, que no soy yo mejor que mis hermanos;
6 Doubtless I will avenge my nation, and the sanctuary, and our wives, and our children: for all the heathen are gathered to destroy us of very malice.	6 sino que vengaré a mi nación, al Lugar Santo y a vuestras mujeres e hijos, puesto que, impulsados por el odio, se han unido todos los gentiles para aniquilarnos».
7 Now as soon as the people heard these words, their spirit revived.	7 Al oír estas palabras, se enardecieron los ánimos del pueblo
8 And they answered with a loud voice, saying, Thou shalt be our leader instead of Judas and Jonathan thy brother.	8 y respondieron en alta voz diciendo: «Tú eres nuestro guía en lugar de Judas y de tu hermano Jonatán;
9 Fight thou our battles, and whatsoever, thou commandest us, that will we do.	9 toma la dirección de nuestra guerra y haremos cuanto nos mandes».
10 So then he gathered together all the men of war, and made haste to finish the walls of Jerusalem, and he fortified it round about.	10 Reunió entonces Simón a todos los hombres aptos para la guerra y se dio prisa en acabar las murallas de Jerusalén hasta que la fortificó en todo su contorno.
11 Also he sent Jonathan the son of Absolom, and with him a great power, to Joppa: who casting out them that were therein remained there in it.	11 Envió a Jonatán, hijo de Absalón, a Joppe con un importante destacamento, el cual expulsó a los que en la ciudad estaban y se estableció en ella.
12 So Tryphon removed from Ptolemaus with a great power to invade the land of Judea, and Jonathan was with him in ward.	12 Partió Trifón de Tolemaida con un ejercito numeroso para entrar en el país de Judá llevando consigo prisionero a Jonatán.
13 But Simon pitched his tents at Adida, over against the plain.	13 Simón puso su campamento en Jadidá, frente a la llanura.
14 Now when Tryphon knew that Simon was risen up instead of his brother Jonathan, and meant to join battle with him, he sent messengers unto him, saying,	14 Al enterarse Trifón de que Simón había sucedido en el mando a su hermano Jonatán y que estaba preparado para entrar con él en batalla, le envió mensajeros diciéndole:
15 Whereas we have Jonathan thy brother in hold, it is for money that he is owing unto the king's treasure, concerning the business that was committed unto him.	15 «Tenemos detenido a tu hermano Jonatán por las deudas contraídas con el tesoro real en el desempeño de su cargo.
16 Wherefore now send an hundred talents of silver, and two of his sons for hostages, that when he is at liberty he may not revolt from us, and we will let him go.	16 Envíanos, pues, cien talentos de plata y a dos de sus hijos como rehenes, no sea que una vez libre se rebele contra nosotros. Entonces le soltaremos».
17 Hereupon Simon, albeit he perceived that they spake deceitfully unto him yet sent he the money and the children, lest peradventure he should procure to himself great hatred of the people:	17 Simón, aunque se dio cuenta de que le hablaban con falsedad, envió a buscar el dinero y los niños para no provocar contra sí una gran enemistad del pueblo que diría:
18 Who might have said, Because I sent him not the money and the children, therefore is Jonathan dead.	18 «Porque no envié yo el dinero y los niños, ha muerto Jonatán».
19 So he sent them the children and the hundred talents: howbeit Tryphon dissembled neither would he let Jonathan go.	19 Envió, pues, los niños y los cien talentos, pero Trifón faltó a su palabra y no soltó a Jonatán.
20 And after this came Tryphon to invade the land, and destroy it, going round about by the way that leadeth unto Adora: but Simon and his host marched against him in every place, wheresoever he went.	20 Después de esto, se puso Trifón en marcha para invadir la región y devastarla. Dio un rodeo por el camino de Adorá, mientras Simón y su ejército obstaculizaban su marcha dondequiera que iba.
21 Now they that were in the tower sent messengers unto Tryphon, to the end that he should hasten his coming unto them by the wilderness, and send them victuals.	21 Los de la Ciudadela enviaron a Trifón legados dándole prisa a que viniese donde ellos a través del desierto y les enviase víveres.
22 Wherefore Tryphon made ready all his horsemen to come that night: but there fell a very great snow, by reason whereof he came not. So he departed, and came into the country of Galaad.	22 Preparó Trifón toda su caballería para ir, pero aquella noche cayó tal cantidad de nieve que le impidió acudir allá. Partió de allí y se fue a la región de Galaad.
23 And when he came near to Bascama he slew Jonathan, who was buried there.	23 Cuando se encontraba cerca de Bascamá, hizo matar a Jonatán, que fue enterrado allí.
24 Afterward Tryphon returned and went into his own land.	24 Luego dio Trifón la vuelta y se marchó a su país.
25 Then sent Simon, and took the bones of Jonathan his brother, and buried them in Modin, the city of his fathers.	25 Envió Simón a recoger los huesos de su hermano Jonatán y le dio sepultura en Modín, ciudad de sus padres.
26 And all Israel made great lamentation for him, and bewailed him many days.	26 Todo Israel hizo gran duelo por él y le lloró muchos días.
27 Simon also built a monument upon the sepulchre of his father and his brethren, and raised it aloft to the sight, with hewn stone behind and before.	27 Simón construyó sobre el sepulcro de su padre y sus hermanos un mausoleo alto, que pudiera verse, de piedras pulidas por delante y por detrás.
28 Moreover he set up seven pyramids, one against another, for his father, and his mother, and his four brethren.	28 Levantó siete pirámides, una frente a otra, dedicadas a su padre, a su madre y a sus cuatro hermanos.
29 And in these he made cunning devices, about the which he set great pillars, and upon the pillars he made all their armour for a perpetual memory, and by the armour ships carved, that they might be seen of all that sail on the sea.	29 Levantó alrededor de ellas grandes columnas y sobre las columnas hizo panoplias para recuerdo eterno. Al lado de las panoplias esculpió unas naves que pudieran ser contempladas por todos los que navegaran por el mar.
30 This is the sepulchre which he made at Modin, and it standeth yet unto this day.	30 Tal fue el mausoleo que construyó en Modín y que subsiste en nuestros días.
31 Now Tryphon dealt deceitfully with the young king Antiochus, and slew him.	31 Trifón, procediendo insidiosamente con el joven rey Antíoco, le dio muerte.
32 And he reigned in his stead, and crowned himself king of Asia, and brought a great calamity upon the land.	32 Ocupó el reino en su lugar, se ciñó la diadema de Asia y causó grandes estragos en el país.
33 Then Simon built up the strong holds in Judea, and fenced them about with high towers, and great walls, and gates, and bars, and laid up victuals therein.	33 Simón, por su parte, reconstruyó las fortalezas de Judea, las rodeó de altas torres y grandes murallas con puertas y cerrojos, y almacenó víveres en ellas.
34 Moreover Simon chose men, and sent to king Demetrius, to the end he should give the land an immunity, because all that Tryphon did was to spoil.	34 Además escogió Simón hombres que envió al rey Demetrio intentando conseguir una remisión para la región, dado que toda la actividad de Trifón había sido un continuo robo.
35 Unto whom king Demetrius answered and wrote after this manner:	35 El rey Demetrio contestó a su petición y le escribió la siguiente carta:
36 King Demetrius unto Simon the high priest, and friend of kings, as also unto the elders and nation of the Jews, sendeth greeting:	36 «El rey Demetrio saluda a Simón, sumo sacerdote y amigo de reyes, a los ancianos y a la nación de los judíos.
37 The golden crown, and the scarlet robe, which ye sent unto us, we have received: and we are ready to make a stedfast peace with you, yea, and to write unto our officers, to confirm the immunities which we have granted.	37 Hemos recibido la corona de oro y la palma que nos habéis enviado y estamos dispuestos a concertar con vosotros una paz completa y a escribir a los funcionarios que os concedan la remisión de las deudas.
38 And whatsoever covenants we have made with you shall stand; and the strong holds, which ye have builded, shall be your own.	38 Cuanto hemos decidido sobre vosotros, quede firme y sean vuestras las fortalezas que habéis construido.
39 As for any oversight or fault committed unto this day, we forgive it, and the crown tax also, which ye owe us: and if there were any other tribute paid in Jerusalem, it shall no more be paid.	39 Os perdonamos los errores y delitos cometidos hasta el día de hoy y la corona que nos debéis. Si algún otro tributo se percibía en Jerusalén, ya no se exija.
40 And look who are meet among you to be in our court, let then be enrolled, and let there be peace betwixt us.	40 Y si algunos de vosotros son aptos para alistarse en nuestra guardia, alístense y haya paz entre nosotros».
41 Thus the yoke of the heathen was taken away from Israel in the hundred and seventieth year.	41 El año 170 quedó Israel libre del yugo de los gentiles
42 Then the people of Israel began to write in their instruments and contracts, In the first year of Simon the high priest, the governor and leader of the Jews.	42 y el pueblo comenzó a escribir en las actas y contratos: «En el año primero de Simón, gran sumo sacerdote, estratega y hegumeno de los judíos.
43 In those days Simon camped against Gaza and besieged it round about; he made also an engine of war, and set it by the city, and battered a certain tower, and took it.	43 Por aquellos días puso cerco Simón a Gázara y la rodeó con sus tropas. Construyó una torre móvil que acercó a la ciudad y abriendo brecha en un baluarte, lo tomó.
44 And they that were in the engine leaped into the city; whereupon there was a great uproar in the city:	44 Saltaron los de la torre a la ciudad y se produjo en ella gran agitación.
45 Insomuch as the people of the city rent their clothes, and climbed upon the walls with their wives and children, and cried with a loud voice, beseeching Simon to grant them peace.	45 Los habitantes, rasgados los vestidos, subieron a la muralla con sus mujeres e hijos y pidieron a grandes gritos a Simón que les diese la mano.
46 And they said, Deal not with us according to our wickedness, but according to thy mercy.	46 «No nos trates, le decían, según nuestras maldades, sino según tu misericordia».
47 So Simon was appeased toward them, and fought no more against them, but put them out of the city, and cleansed the houses wherein the idols were, and so entered into it with songs and thanksgiving.	47 Simón se reconcilió con ellos y no les atacó, pero les echó de la ciudad y mandó purificar las casas en que había ídolos. Entonces entró en ella con himnos y bendiciones.
48 Yea, he put all uncleanness out of it, and placed such men there as would keep the law, and made it stronger than it was before, and built therein a dwellingplace for himself.	48 Echó de ella toda impureza, estableció en ella hombres observantes de la Ley, la fortificó y se construyó en ella para sí una residencia.
49 They also of the tower in Jerusalem were kept so strait, that they could neither come forth, nor go into the country, nor buy, nor sell: wherefore they were in great distress for want of victuals, and a great number of them perished through famine.	49 Los de la Ciudadela de Jerusalén se veían imposibilitados de entrar y salir por la región, de comprar y de vender. Sufrían grave escasez y bastantes de ellos habían perecido de hambre.
50 Then cried they to Simon, beseeching him to be at one with them: which thing he granted them; and when he had put them out from thence, he cleansed the tower from pollutions:	50 Clamaron a Simón que hiciera con ellos la paz y Simón se lo concedió. Les echó de allí y purificó de inmundicias la Ciudadela.
51 And entered into it the three and twentieth day of the second month in the hundred seventy and first year, with thanksgiving, and branches of palm trees, and with harps, and cymbals, and with viols, and hymns, and songs: because there was destroyed a great enemy out of Israel.	51 Entraron en ella el día veintitrés del segundo mes del año 171 con aclamaciones y ramos de palma, con liras, címbalos y arpas, con himnos y cantos, porque un gran enemigo había sido vencido y expulsado de Israel.
52 He ordained also that that day should be kept every year with gladness. Moreover the hill of the temple that was by the tower he made stronger than it was, and there he dwelt himself with his company.	52 Simón dispuso que este día se celebrara con júbilo cada año. Fortificó el monte del Templo que está al lado de la Ciudadela y habitó allí con los suyos.
53 And when Simon saw that John his son was a valiant man, he made him captain of all the hosts; and he dwelt in Gazera.	53 Y viendo Simón que su hijo Juan era todo un hombre, le nombró jefe de todas las fuerzas con residencia en Gázara.
