1 And Daniel was the king's guest, and was honoured above all his friends.	1 E Daniele era della mensa del re, e onorato sopra tutti li amici suoi.
2 Now the Babylonians had an idol called Bel: and there were spent upon him every day twelve great measures of fine flour, and forty sheep, and sixty vessels of wine.	2 Ed era uno idolo, chiamato per nome Bel, appo quelli di Babilonia; e ogni dì erali dato dodici misure (ovver corbe, di pane, ovver) di farina, e pecore XL, e anfore sei di vino.
3 The king also worshipped him, and went every day to adore him: but Daniel adored his God. And the king said to him: Why dost thou not adore Bel?	3 E lo re lo adorava, e andava ogni uno ad adorarlo; ma Daniele adorava il suo Dio. E lo re disse a Daniele: per che non adori tu Bel?
4 And he answered, and said to him: Because I do not worship idols made with hands, but the living God, that created heaven and earth, and hath power over all flesh.	4 E Daniele rispondendo sì li disse: io non adoro li idoli che sono stati fatti con le mani, ma io adoro Dio vivente, lo quale ha fatto il cielo e la terra, e ha autorità sopra ogni carne (ovver ogni uomo).
5 And the king said to him: Doth not Bel seem to thee to be a living god? Seest thou not how much he eateth and drinketh every day?	5 E lo re si li disse: or come non ti pare che Bel sia Dio vivo? Non vedi tu quanto lui mangia e beve ogni di?
6 Then Daniel smiled and said: O king, be not deceived: for this is but clay within, and brass without, neither hath he eaten at any time.	6 E Daniel li disse ridendo: o re, poni mente che tu erri; questo idolo è di dentro di terra, e di fuori di bronzo, e non mangia mai.
7 And the king being angry called for his priests, and said to them: If you tell me not, who it is that eateth up these expenses, you shall die.	7 E lo re irato chiamò li sacerdoti suoi, e disseli se voi non mi direte, chi è questo che mangia queste cose che sono date a Bel, voi morirete.
8 But if you can shew that Bel eateth these things, Daniel shall die, because he hath blasphemed against Bel. And Daniel said to the king: Be it done according to thy word.	8 Se voi mi dimostrate che Bel mangia queste cose, morirà Daniele, però ch' egli ha blasfemato Bel. E disse Daniele al re: sia fatto secondo quello che tu hai detto.
9 Now the priests of Bel were seventy, besides their wives, and little ones, and children. And the king went with Daniel into the temple of Bel.	9 Ed erano i sacerdoti di Bel LXX sanza le loro mogliere, figliuoli e fanciulli. E venne il re con Daniele nel tempio di Bel.
10 And the priests of Bel said: Behold we go out: and do thou, O king, set on the meats, and make ready the wine, and shut the door fast, and seal it with thy own ring:	10 E dissero i sacerdoti di Bel: ecco, noi usciremo fuori, e tu, re, riponi le cose da mangiare, e mesi il vino, e chiudi la porta, e segnala col tuo anello.
11 And when thou comest in the morning, if thou findest not that Bel hath eaten up all, we will suffer death, or else Daniel that hath lied against us.	11 E quando tu sarai entrato la mattina, se tu non troverai che Bel abbi mangiato tutto, siamo contenti di morire noi, ovvero Daniele lo quale ha detto falsamente contro a noi.
12 And they little regarded it, because they had made under the table a secret entrance, and they always came in by it, and consumed those things.	12 E facèvanosi beffe (delle parole di Daniele), però che aveano fatto sotto lo altare di Bel una secreta entrata, e per quella entravano sempre, e divoravano ciò che v' era.
13 So it came to pass after they were gone out, the king set the meats before Bel: and Daniel commanded his servants, and they brought ashes, and he sifted them all over the temple before the king: and going forth they shut the door, and having sealed it with the king's ring, they departed.	13 E dopo che li sacerdoti furono usciti, e che il re ebbe posto li cibi dinanzi a Bel, comandò Daniele alli suoi servi, e portorono della cenere, e fecela crivellare per tutto il tempio dinanzi al re; e usciti chiuderono l' uscio, e audorsene, poi che fu segnato coll' anello dello re.
14 But the priests went in by night, according to their custom, with their wives and their children: and they ate and drank up all.	14 E li sacerdoti entrarono di notte secondo la sua consuetudine, e le mogliere e li suoi figliuoli; e mangiorono e bebero tutto ciò che v' era.
15 And the king arose early in the morning, and Daniel with him.	15 E levossi lo re la mattina per tempo, e Daniele con lui.
16 And the king said: Are the seals whole, Daniel? And he answered: They are whole, O king.	16 E disse lo re: Daniele, salvi sono li segni? Lo quale rispose: salvi sono, re.
17 And as soon as he had opened the door, the king looked upon the table, and cried out with a loud voice: Great art thou, O Bel, and there is not any deceit with thee.	17 E subito che fu aperto l' uscio, guardò lo re l'altare, e con voce alta disse: grande sei tu Bel, e appo te non v'è alcuno inganno.
18 And Daniel laughed: and he held the king that he should not go in: and he said: Behold the pavement, mark whose footsteps these are.	18 E Daniele se ne rise, e tenne il re acciò che non entrasse dentro, e disse: ecco il pavimento, considera di chi sono questi vestigi.
19 And the king said: I see the footsteps of men, and women, and children. And the king was angry.	19 E disse il re: io vedo vestigi di uomini e di donne e di fanciulli. E irossi il re.
20 Then he took the priests, and their wives, and their children: and they shewed him the private doors by which they came in, and consumed the things that were on the table.	20 E fece allora prendere li sacerdoti, le mogliere e li figliuoli loro; e dimostroroli li uscietti ascosti, per li quali entravano, e consumavano tutto quello ch' era su la mensa.
21 The king therefore put them to death, and delivered Bel into the power of Daniel: who destroyed him, and his temple.	21 Vedendo dunque questo, lo re feceli tutti uccidere, e diede Bel nella podestà di Daniele, lo qual lo sovvertì e disfecelo e ruinò il tempio.
22 And there was a great dragon in that place, and the Babylonians worshipped him.	22 Ed era uno dragone grande in quello luogo, e quelli di Babilonia sì lo adoravano.
23 And the king said to Daniel: Behold thou canst not say now, that this is not a living god: adore him therefore.	23 E disse lo re a Daniele: ecco, tu non puoi dire che questo non sia Iddio vivo; adunque adoralo.
24 And Daniel said: I adore the Lord my God: for he is the living God: but that is no living god.	24 E disse Daniele: io adoro il Signore mio Iddio, però che lui è Dio vivente; questo non è Dio vivente.
25 But give me leave, O king, and I will kill this dragon without sword or club. And the king said: I give thee leave.	25 Ma tu, re, (fa questo ch' io ti dirò), dammi podestà, e io ucciderò questo dragone sanza coltello e sanza bastone. E disse lo re: io ti dò ogni autorità.
26 Then Daniel took pitch, and fat, and hair, and boiled them together: and he made lumps, and put them into the dragon's mouth, and the dragon burst asunder. And he said: Behold him whom you worshipped.	26 E tolse Daniele la pece, e grasso e peli, e sì li cosse insieme al fuoco, e fece una inassa, e diedela nella bocca del dragone, e uccise il dragone. E disse: ecco quello che voi adoravate.
27 And when the Babylonians had heard this, they took great indignation: and being gathered together against the king, they said: The king is become a Jew. He hath destroyed Bel, he hath killed the dragon, and he hath put the priests to death.	27 La qual cosa udita, quelli di Babilonia furono molto indignati; e congregoronsi contro al re, e dissero lo re fatto è Giudeo; egli ha distrutto Bel e ha morto il dragone, e li sacerdoti ha uccisi.
28 And they came to the king, and said: Deliver us Daniel, or else we will destroy thee and thy house.	28 E quando furono venuti al re, dissero: dacci Daniele, altrimenti noi uccideremo te, e tutti quelli di casa tua.
29 And the king saw that they pressed upon him violently: and being constrained by necessity he delivered Daniel to them.	29 E vedendo il re, che erano venuti con gran furore contra a lui, per forza costretto (di paura) li diede Daniele.
30 And they cast him into the den of lions, and he was there six days.	30 Li quali lo misero nello lago de' leoni; e stettevi sei dì.
31 And in the den there were seven lions, and they had given to them two carcasses every day, and two sheep: but then they were not given unto them, that they might devour Daniel.	31 Certo nel lago v' era VII leoni, ed eravi dato ogni di due corpi (di quelli che erano condannati alla morte) e due pecore; e in quello tempo non li fu dato alcuna cosa, acciò che divorasseno Daniele.
32 Now there was in Judea a prophet called Habacuc, and he had boiled pottage, and had broken bread in a bowl: and was going into the field, to carry it to the reapers.	32 Ed era Abacuc profeta in Giudea, ed egli avea cotto il ferculo, e avea posto il pane nell' orciuolo; e andàvasene nel campo per portarlo a quelli che tagliavano la sua biada.
33 And the angel of the Lord said to Habacuc: Carry the dinner which thou hast into Babylon to Daniel, who is in the lions' den.	33 E disse l'angelo di Dio ad Abacuc: porta questo, che hai preparato per pranzo, in Babilonia a Daniele, lo quale è nel lago de' leoni.
34 And Habacuc said: Lord, I never saw Babylon, nor do I know the den.	34 E disse Abacuc: Signore, io non vidi giammai Babilonia, e lo lago non so dove si sia.
35 And the angel of the Lord took him by the top of his head, and carried him by the hair of his head, and set him in Babylon over the den in the force of his spirit.	35 E l'angelo del Signore lo pigliò per uno capello della cima del capo suo, e portollo e puoselo in Babilonia sopra lo lago nell' impeto del suo spirito.
36 And Habacuc cried, saying: O Daniel, thou servant of God, take the dinner that God hath sent thee.	36 E chiamò Abacuc, dicendo: Daniele, servo di Dio, piglia lo pranzo lo quale t'ha mandato Iddio.
37 And Daniel said: Thou hast remembered me, O God, and thou hast not forsaken them that love thee.	37 E disse Daniele: sei ricordato di me, Iddio, e non hai abbandonato quelli che te amano.
38 And Daniel arose and ate. And the angel of the Lord presently set Habacuc again in his own place.	38 E levandosi Daniele mangiò. E poi l' angelo rimise subito Abacuc nel luogo suo.
39 And upon the seventh day the king came to bewail Daniel: and he came to the den, and looked in, and behold Daniel was sitting in the midst of the lions.	39 E lo settimo dì venne lo re per piagnere Daniele; e venne al lago, e guardò dentro; ed ecco che vidde Daniele che sedeva nel mezzo de' leoni.
40 And the king cried out with a loud voice, saying: Great art thou, O Lord the God of Daniel. And he drew him out of the lions' den.	40 E gridò con alta voce, e disse: grande sei tu, Iddio di Daniele. E fecelo trar fuori del lago de' leoni.
41 But those that bad been the cause of his destruction, he cast into the den, and they were devoured in a moment before him.	41 E coloro che erano stati cagione della sua perdizione, li fece poner nel lago; e furo divorati sùbito dinanzi a lui.
42 Then the king said: Let all the inhabitants of the whole earth fear the God of Daniel: for he is the Saviour, working signs, and wonders in the earth: who hath delivered Daniel out of the lions' den.
