1 And Daniel was the king's guest, and was honoured above all his friends.	1 El rey Astiages fue a reunirse con sus padres, y le sucedió Ciro el Persa.
2 Now the Babylonians had an idol called Bel: and there were spent upon him every day twelve great measures of fine flour, and forty sheep, and sixty vessels of wine.	2 Daniel era comensal del rey y más honrado que ningún otro de sus amigos.
3 The king also worshipped him, and went every day to adore him: but Daniel adored his God. And the king said to him: Why dost thou not adore Bel?	3 Tenían los babilonios un ídolo, llamado Bel, con el que se gastaban cada día doce artabas de flor de harina, cuarenta ovejas y seis medidas de vino.
4 And he answered, and said to him: Because I do not worship idols made with hands, but the living God, that created heaven and earth, and hath power over all flesh.	4 El rey también le veneraba y todos los días iba a adorarle. Daniel, en cambio, adoraba a su Dios.
5 And the king said to him: Doth not Bel seem to thee to be a living god? Seest thou not how much he eateth and drinketh every day?	5 El rey le dijo: «¿Por qué no adoras a Bel?» El respondió: «Porque yo no venero a ídolos hechos por mano humana, sino solamente al Dios vivo que hizo el cielo y la tierra y que tiene poder sobre toda carne».
6 Then Daniel smiled and said: O king, be not deceived: for this is but clay within, and brass without, neither hath he eaten at any time.	6 Díjole el rey: ¿Crees que Bel no es un dios vivo? ¿No ves todo lo que come y bebe a diario?»
7 And the king being angry called for his priests, and said to them: If you tell me not, who it is that eateth up these expenses, you shall die.	7 Daniel se echó a reír: «Oh rey, no te engañes - dijo -, por dentro es de arcilla y por fuera de bronce, y eso no ha comido ni bebido jamás».
8 But if you can shew that Bel eateth these things, Daniel shall die, because he hath blasphemed against Bel. And Daniel said to the king: Be it done according to thy word.	8 Entonces el rey, montando en cólera, mandó llamar a sus sacerdotes y les dijo: «Si no me decís quién es el que come este dispendio, moriréis; pero si demostráis que el que lo come es Bel, morirá Daniel por haber blasfemado contra Bel».
9 Now the priests of Bel were seventy, besides their wives, and little ones, and children. And the king went with Daniel into the temple of Bel.	9 Daniel dijo al rey: «¡Hágase según tu palabra!» Eran setenta los sacerdotes de Bel, sin contar las mujeres y los hijos.
10 And the priests of Bel said: Behold we go out: and do thou, O king, set on the meats, and make ready the wine, and shut the door fast, and seal it with thy own ring:	10 El rey se dirigió, pues, con Daniel al templo de Bel,
11 And when thou comest in the morning, if thou findest not that Bel hath eaten up all, we will suffer death, or else Daniel that hath lied against us.	11 y los sacerdotes de Bel le dijeron: «Mira, nosotros vamos a salir de aquí; tú, oh rey, manda poner la comida y el vino mezclado; luego cierra la puerta y séllada con tu anillo; si mañana por la mañana, cuando vuelvas, no encuentras que Bel se lo ha comido todo, moriremos nosotros; en caso contrario, morirá Daniel que nos ha calumniado».
12 And they little regarded it, because they had made under the table a secret entrance, and they always came in by it, and consumed those things.	12 Estaban ellos tranquilos, porque se habían hecho una entrada secreta debajo de la mesa y por allí entraban normalmente a llevarse las ofrendas.
13 So it came to pass after they were gone out, the king set the meats before Bel: and Daniel commanded his servants, and they brought ashes, and he sifted them all over the temple before the king: and going forth they shut the door, and having sealed it with the king's ring, they departed.	13 En cuanto salieron y el rey depositó la comida ante Bel,
14 But the priests went in by night, according to their custom, with their wives and their children: and they ate and drank up all.	14 Daniel mandó a sus criados que trajeran ceniza y la esparcieran por todo el suelo del templo, sin más testigo que el rey. Luego salieron, cerraron la puerta, la sellaron con el anillo real, y se fueron.
15 And the king arose early in the morning, and Daniel with him.	15 Los sacerdotes vinieron por la noche, como de costumbre, con sus mujeres y sus hijos, y se lo comieron y bebieron todo.
16 And the king said: Are the seals whole, Daniel? And he answered: They are whole, O king.	16 El rey se levantó muy temprano y Daniel con él.
17 And as soon as he had opened the door, the king looked upon the table, and cried out with a loud voice: Great art thou, O Bel, and there is not any deceit with thee.	17 El rey le preguntó: «Daniel, ¿están intactos los sellos?» - «Intactos, oh rey», respondió él.
18 And Daniel laughed: and he held the king that he should not go in: and he said: Behold the pavement, mark whose footsteps these are.	18 Nada más abierta la puerta, el rey echó una mirada a la mesa y gritó en alta voz: «¡Grande eres, Bel, y no hay en ti engaño alguno!»
19 And the king said: I see the footsteps of men, and women, and children. And the king was angry.	19 Daniel se echó a reír y, deteniendo al rey para que no entrara más adentro, le dijo: «Mira, mira al suelo, y repara de quién son esas huellas».
20 Then he took the priests, and their wives, and their children: and they shewed him the private doors by which they came in, and consumed the things that were on the table.	20 - «Veo huellas de hombres, de mujeres y de niños», dijo el rey;
21 The king therefore put them to death, and delivered Bel into the power of Daniel: who destroyed him, and his temple.	21 y, montando en cólera, mandó detener a los sacerdotes con sus mujeres y sus hijos. Ellos le mostraron entonces la puerta secreta por la que entraban a consumir lo que había sobre la mesa.
22 And there was a great dragon in that place, and the Babylonians worshipped him.	22 Y el rey mandó matarlos y entregó a Bel en manos de Daniel, el cual lo destruyó, así como su templo.
23 And the king said to Daniel: Behold thou canst not say now, that this is not a living god: adore him therefore.	23 Habían también una gran serpiente a la que los babilonios veneraban.
24 And Daniel said: I adore the Lord my God: for he is the living God: but that is no living god.	24 El rey dijo a Daniel: «¿Vas a decir también que ésta es de bronce? Mira, está viva y come y bebe: no puedes decir que no es un dios vivo; así que adórale».
25 But give me leave, O king, and I will kill this dragon without sword or club. And the king said: I give thee leave.	25 Daniel respondió: «Yo adoro sólo al Señor mi Dios; él es el Dios vivo. Mas tú, oh rey, dame permiso y yo mataré a esta serpiente sin espada ni estaca».
26 Then Daniel took pitch, and fat, and hair, and boiled them together: and he made lumps, and put them into the dragon's mouth, and the dragon burst asunder. And he said: Behold him whom you worshipped.	26 Dijo el rey: «Te lo doy».
27 And when the Babylonians had heard this, they took great indignation: and being gathered together against the king, they said: The king is become a Jew. He hath destroyed Bel, he hath killed the dragon, and he hath put the priests to death.	27 Daniel tomó entonces pez, grasa y pelos, lo coció todo junto e hizo con ello unas bolitas que echó en las fauces de la serpiente; la serpiente las tragó y reventó. Y dijo Daniel: «¡Mirad qué es lo que veneráis!»
28 And they came to the king, and said: Deliver us Daniel, or else we will destroy thee and thy house.	28 Al enterarse los babilonios, se enfurecieron mucho; se amotinaron contra el rey y dijeron: «El rey se ha hecho judío: ha destruido a Bel, ha matado a la serpiente, y a los sacerdotes los ha asesinado».
29 And the king saw that they pressed upon him violently: and being constrained by necessity he delivered Daniel to them.	29 Fueron, pues, a decir al rey: «Entréganos a Daniel; si no, te mataremos a ti y a toda tu casa».
30 And they cast him into the den of lions, and he was there six days.	30 Ante esta gran violencia, el rey se vio obligado a entregarles a Daniel.
31 And in the den there were seven lions, and they had given to them two carcasses every day, and two sheep: but then they were not given unto them, that they might devour Daniel.	31 Ellos le echaron en el foso de los leones, donde estuvo seis días.
32 Now there was in Judea a prophet called Habacuc, and he had boiled pottage, and had broken bread in a bowl: and was going into the field, to carry it to the reapers.	32 Había en el foso siete leones a los que se les daba diariamente dos cadáveres y dos carneros; entonces no se les dio nada, para que devoraran a Daniel.
33 And the angel of the Lord said to Habacuc: Carry the dinner which thou hast into Babylon to Daniel, who is in the lions' den.	33 Estaba a la sazón en Judea el profeta Habacuc: acababa de preparar un cocido y de desmenuzar pan en un plato, y se dirigía al campo a llevárselo a los segadores.
34 And Habacuc said: Lord, I never saw Babylon, nor do I know the den.	34 El ángel del Señor dijo a Habacuc: «Lleva esa comida que tienes a Babilonia, a Daniel que está en el foso de los leones».
35 And the angel of the Lord took him by the top of his head, and carried him by the hair of his head, and set him in Babylon over the den in the force of his spirit.	35 «Señor - dijo Habacuc - no he visto jamás Babilonia ni conozco ese foso».
36 And Habacuc cried, saying: O Daniel, thou servant of God, take the dinner that God hath sent thee.	36 Entonces el ángel del Señor le agarró por la cabeza y, llevándole por los cabellos, le puso en Babilonia, encima del foso, con la rapidez de su soplo.
37 And Daniel said: Thou hast remembered me, O God, and thou hast not forsaken them that love thee.	37 Habacuc gritó: «Daniel, Daniel, toma la comida que el Señor te ha enviado».
38 And Daniel arose and ate. And the angel of the Lord presently set Habacuc again in his own place.	38 Y dijo Daniel; «Te has acordado de mí, Dios mío, y no has abandonado a los que te aman».
39 And upon the seventh day the king came to bewail Daniel: and he came to the den, and looked in, and behold Daniel was sitting in the midst of the lions.	39 Y Daniel se levantó y se puso a comer, mientras el ángel de Dios volvía a llevar al instante a Habacuc a su lugar.
40 And the king cried out with a loud voice, saying: Great art thou, O Lord the God of Daniel. And he drew him out of the lions' den.	40 El día séptimo, vino el rey a llorar a Daniel; se acercó al foso, miró, y he aquí que Daniel estaba allí sentado.
41 But those that bad been the cause of his destruction, he cast into the den, and they were devoured in a moment before him.	41 Entonces exclamó: «Grande eres, Señor, Dios de Daniel, y no hay otro Dios fuera de ti».
42 Then the king said: Let all the inhabitants of the whole earth fear the God of Daniel: for he is the Saviour, working signs, and wonders in the earth: who hath delivered Daniel out of the lions' den.	42 Luego mandó sacarle y echar allá a aquellos que habían querido perderle, los cuales fueron al instante devorados en su presencia.
