Proverbs 17

DOUAI-RHEIMS	JERUSALEM
1 Better is a dry morsel with joy, than a house full of victims with strife.	1 Mieux vaut une bouchée de pain sec et la tranquillité qu'une maison pleine de sacrifices dediscorde.
2 A wise servant shall rule over foolish sons, and shall divide the inheritance among the brethren.	2 Un serviteur avisé l'emporte sur le fils indigne, avec les frères il aura sa part d'héritage.
3 As silver is tried by fire, and gold in the furnace: so the Lord trieth the hearts.	3 La fournaise pour l'argent, le fourneau pour l'or, pour éprouver les coeurs: Yahvé.
4 The evil man obeyeth an unjust tongue: and the deceitful hearkeneth to lying lips.	4 Le méchant est attentif aux lèvres pernicieuses, le menteur prête l'oreille à la langue perverse.
5 He that despiseth the poor, reproacheth his Maker; and he that rejoiceth at another man's ruin, shall not be unpunished.	5 Qui nargue le pauvre outrage son Créateur, qui rit d'un malheureux ne restera pas impuni.
6 Children's children are the crown of old men: and the glory of children are their fathers.	6 Couronne des vieillards: les enfants de leurs enfants; fierté des enfants: leur père.
7 Eloquent words do not become a fool, nor lying lips a prince.	7 Une langue distinguée ne sied pas à l'insensé, moins encore, au prince, une langue menteuse.
8 The expectation of him that expecteth, is a most acceptable jewel: whithersoever he turneth himself, he understandeth wisely.	8 Un présent est un talisman pour qui en dispose: de quelque côté qu'il se tourne, il réussit.
9 He that concealeth a transgression. seeketh friendships: he that repeateth it again, separateth friends.	9 Qui jette le voile sur une offense cultive l'amitié, qui répète la chose divise les intimes.
10 A reproof availeth more with a wise man, than a hundred stripes with a fool.	10 Un reproche fait plus d'impression sur l'homme intelligent que cent coups sur le sot.
11 An evil man always seeketh quarrels: but a cruel angel shall be sent against him.	11 Le méchant ne cherche que rébellion, mais un messager cruel sera envoyé contre lui.
12 It is better to meet a bear robbed of her whelps, than a fool trusting in his own folly.	12 Plutôt rencontrer une ourse privée de ses petits qu'un insensé en son délire.
13 He that rendereth evil for good, evil shall not depart from his house.	13 Qui rend le mal pour le bien, le malheur ne s'éloignera pas de sa maison.
14 The beginning of quarrels is as when one letteth out water: before he suffereth reproach he forsaketh judgment.	14 C'est libérer les eaux qu'entamer une querelle; avant que n'éclate le procès, désiste-toi.
15 He that justifieth the wicked, and he that condemneth the just, both are abominable before God.	15 Acquitter le coupable et condamner le juste: deux choses également en horreur à Yahvé.
16 What doth it avail a fool to have riches, seeing he cannot buy wisdom? He that maketh his house high, seeketh a downfall: and he that refuseth to learn, shall fall into evils.	16 A quoi bon de l'argent dans la main d'un sot? A acheter la sagesse? Il n'y a pas le coeur!
17 He that is a friend loveth at all times: and a brother is proved in distress.	17 Un ami aime en tout temps, un frère est engendré en vue de l'adversité.
18 A foolish man will clap hands, when he is surety for his friend.	18 Est court de sens qui tope dans la main et pour son prochain se porte garant.
19 He that studieth discords, loveth quarrels: and he that exalteth his door, seeketh ruin.	19 C'est aimer l'offense qu'aimer la chicane, qui se montre orgueilleux cultive la ruine.
20 He that is of a perverse heart, shall not find good: and he that perverteth his tongue, shall fall into evil.	20 Qui a le coeur tortueux ne trouve pas le bonheur, qui a la langue perverse tombe dans lemalheur.
21 A fool is born to his own disgrace: and even his father shall not rejoice in a fool.	21 Qui engendre un sot, c'est pour son chagrin; il n'a guère de joie, le père de l'insensé!
22 A joyful mind maketh age flourishing: a sorrowful spirit drieth up the bones.	22 Coeur joyeux améliore la santé, esprit déprimé dessèche les os.
23 The wicked man taketh gifts out of the bosom, that he may pervert the paths of judgment.	23 Le méchant accepte un présent sous le manteau, pour faire une entorse au droit.
24 Wisdom shineth in the face of the wise: the eyes of fools are in the ends of the earth.	24 L'homme intelligent a devant lui la sagesse, mais les regards du sot se portent au bout dumonde.
25 A foolish son is the anger of the father: and the sorrow of the mother that bore him.	25 Chagrin pour son père qu'un fils insensé, et amertume pour celle qui l'a enfanté.
26 It is no good thing to do hurt to the just: nor to strike the prince, who judgeth right.	26 Il n'est pas bon de mettre le juste à l'amende; frapper les nobles est contraire au droit.
27 He that setteth bounds to his words. is knowing and wise: and the man of understanding is of a precious spirit.	27 Qui retient ses paroles connaît le savoir, un esprit froid est un homme d'intelligence.
28 Even a fool, if he will hold his peace shall be counted wise: and if he close his lips, a man of understanding.	28 Même le fou, s'il se tait, passe pour sage, pour intelligent, celui qui clôt ses lèvres.
