1 Now Simon heard that Tryphon was gathering together a very great army, to invade the land of Juda, and to destroy it.	1 Ma Simone inteso che Trifone aveva radunato un grande esercito per entrare nella terra di Giuda e desolarla,
2 And seeing that the people was in dread, and in fear, he went up to Jerusalem, and assembled the people:	2 visto che la gente era impaurita e tremante, andò a Gerusalemme, adunò il popolo,
3 And exhorted them, saying: You know what great battles I and my brethren, and the house of my father, have fought for the laws, and the sanctuary, and the distresses that we have seen:	3 li rianimò e disse: « Voi sapete quanto io, i miei fratelli e la casa di mio padre abbiam combattuto per la legge, pel santuario, e in quali angustie ci siamo trovati.
4 By reason whereof all my brethren have lost their lives for Israel's sake, and I am left alone.	4 Per questa causa, per Israele son periti tutti i miei fratelli, e son rimasto io solo.
5 And now far be it from me to spare my life in any time of trouble: for I am not better than my brethren.	5 Or non sia mai ch'io risparmi la mia vita, qualunque sia il tempo dell'afflizione, perchè io non valgo più dei miei fratelli.
6 I will avenge then my nation and the sanctuary, and our children, and wives: for all the heathens are gathered together to destroy us out of mere malice.	6 Io dunque difenderò il mio popolo, il santuario, i nostri figli e le nostre mogli, or che tutte le genti, per l'odio che ci portano, si sono unite per distruggerci ».
7 And the spirit of the people was enkindled as soon as they heard these words.	7 A queste parole s'infiammò lo spirito del popolo,
8 And they answered with a loud voice, saying: Thou art our leader in the place of Judas, and Jonathan thy brother.	8 e risposero ad alta voce: « Tu sei il nostro duce in luogo di Giuda e di Gionata tuoi fratelli:
9 Fight thou our battles, and we will do whatsoever thou shalt say to us.	9 combatti per noi, che obbediremo ad ogni tuo comando ».
10 So gathering together all the men of war, he made haste to finish all the walls of Jerusalem, and he fortified it round about.	10 Allora Simone, radunati tutti i guerrieri, si affrettò a terminare tutte le mura di Gerusalemme, e la fortificò da tutte le parti;
11 And he sent Jonathan the son of Absalom, and with him a new army into Joppe, and he cast out them that were in it, and himself remained there.	11 poi mandò Gionata figlio di Absalom a loppe con nuovi eserciti, e, cacciati quelli che vi eran dentro, vi si fermò.
12 And Tryphon removed from Ptolemais with a great army, to invade the land of Juda, and Jonathan was with him in custody.	12 E Trifone partì con numeroso esercito da Tolemaide per invadere la terra di Giuda, menando seco Gionata prigioniero.
13 But Simon pitched in Addus, over against the plain.	13 Simone pose il campo a Addus, di faccia alla pianura.
14 And when Tryphon understood that Simon was risen up in the place of his brother Jonathan, and that he meant to join battle with him, he sent messengers to him,	14 Quando Trifone seppe che Simone era sorto al posto del suo fratello Gionata, e che era pronto per dargli battaglia, gli mandò ambasciatori a fargli
15 Saying: We have detained thy brother Jonathan for the money that he owed in the king's account, by reason of the affairs which he had the management of.	15 dire: « È per l'argento di cui era debitore al tesoro del re per ragione degli affari da lui amministrati che noi abbiamo ritenuto prigioniero Gionata tuo fratello.
16 But now send a hundred talents of silver, and his two sons for hostages, that when he is set at liberty he may not revolt from us, and we will release him.	16 Or tu manda cento talenti d'argento e i due suoi figli in ostaggio, affinchè, liberato, non abbandoni il nostro partito, e noi lo rimanderemo ».
17 Now Simon knew that he spoke deceitfully to him, nevertheless he ordered the money, and the children to be sent: lest he should bring upon himself a great hatred of the people of Israel, who might have said:	17 Simone ben comprese che (Trifone) gli parlava con frode, non ostante ordinò di consegnare il danaro e i fanciulli, per non tirarsi addosso l'inimicizia del popolo, che avrebbe detto:
18 Because he sent not the money, and the children, therefore is he lost.	18 « Perchè non ha mandato il danaro e i fanciulli,per questo (Gionata) è morto ».
19 So he sent the children, and the hundred talents: and he lied, and did not let Jonathan go.	19 Mandò dunque i fanciulli e i cento talenti; ma (Trifone) mancò di parola, e non rimise in libertà Gionata.
20 And after this Tryphon entered within the country, to destroy it: and they went about by the way that leadeth to Ador: and Simon and his army marched to every place whithersoever they went.	20 In seguito Trifone si avanzò mila regione per devastarla, e presero la via che mena ad Ador, ma Simone col suo esercito teneva loro dietro, dovunque andassero.
21 And they that were in the castle, sent messengers to Tryphon, that he should make haste to come through the desert, and sent them victuals.	21 Or quelli che erano nella cittadella mandarono a dire a Trifone che s'affrettasse a venir dalla parte del deserto, e mandasse loro dei viveri.
22 And Tryphon made ready all his horsemen to come that night: but there fell a very great snow, and he came not into the country of Galaad.	22 E Trifone mise in ordine tutta la cavalleria, per arrivare in quella notte; ma essendo la neve molto alta, non potè entrare nella terra di Galaad.
23 And when he approached to Bascama, he slew Jonathan and his sons there.	23 Quando fu vicino a Bsacaman, vi uccise Gionata e i suoi figlioli;
24 And Tryphon returned, and went into his own country.	24 poi Trifone si volse indietro e tornò al suo paese.
25 And Simon sent, and took the bones of Jonathan his brother, and buried them in Modin, in the city of his fathers.	25 E Simone mandò a prendere le ossa di Gionata suo fratello, e le seppellì in Modin, città dei suoi padri.
26 And all Israel bewailed him with great lamentation: and they mourned for him many days.	26 E tutto Israele fece gran duolo per Gionata, e lo pianse per molti giorni.
27 And Simon built over the sepulchre of his father and of his brethren, a building lofty to the sight, of polished stone behind and before:	27 E sopra il sepolcro di suo padre e dei suoi fratelli, Simone innalzò un fabbricato da vedersi (da lontano) di pietra tagliata, tanto davanti che di dietro.
28 And he set up seven pyramids one against another for his father and his mother, and his four brethren:	28 E vi collocò sette piramidi; l'una di faccia all'altra, al padre, alla madre e ai quattro fratelli.
29 And round about these he set great pillars: and upon the pillars arms for a perpetual memory: and by the arms ships carved, which might be seen by all that sailed on the sea.	29 E intorno ad esse pose delle grandi colonne, e sopra le colonne delle armi, ad eterna memoria, e presso le armi delle navi scolpite, da esser vedute da tutti quelli che navigassero quel mare.
30 This is the sepulchre that he made in Modin even unto this day.	30 Tale è fino al giorno d'oggi il sepolcro che egli fece in Modin. Simone si riavvicina al re Demetrio II.
31 But Tryphon when he was upon a journey with the young king Antiochus, treacherously slew him.	31 Or Trifone, essendo in viaggio col giovane re Antioco, lo uccise a tradimento,
32 And he reigned in his place, and put on the crown of Asia: and brought great evils upon the land.	32 e regnò in sua vece, si cinse di diadema dell'Asia e riempì il paese di stragi.
33 And Simon built up the strong holds of Judea, fortifying them with high towers, and great walls, and gates, and bars: and he stored up victuals in the fortresses.	33 Ma Simone riparò le fortezze della Giudea, e le munì di alte torri, di grandi mura, di porte e di sbarre, e pose dei viveri nelle fortezze.
34 And Simon chose men and sent to king Demetrius, to the end that he should grant an immunity to the land: for all that Tryphon did was to spoil.	34 Poi Simone, scelti degli uomini, li mandò al re Demetrio, a pregarlo di concedere l'immunità al paese, perchè tutti gli atti di Trifone avevano avuto per fine il latrocinio.
35 And king Demetrius in answer to this request, wrote a letter in this manner:	35 E il re Demetrio rispose a tale richiesta, e scrisse la seguente lettera:
36 King Demetrius to Simon the high priest, and friend of kings, and to the ancients, and to the nation of the Jews, greeting.	36 « Il re Demetrio a Simone, sommo sacerdote, amico dei re, e agli anziani e alla nazione dei Giudei, salute.
37 The golden crown, and the palm, which you sent, we have received: and we are ready to make a firm peace with you, and to write to the king's chief officers to release you the things that we have released.	37 Abbiamo ricevuto la corona d'oro e la palma da voi mandata, e siamo disposti a fare con voi una gran pace, e a scrivere agli agenti del re di condonarvi quello che noi vi abbiamo condonato.
38 For all that we have decreed in your favour, shall stand in force. The strong holds that you have built, shall be your own.	38 Tutto quello che vi abbiamo concesso resta stabilito: le fortezze da voi edificate siano vostre.
39 And as for any oversight or fault committed unto this day, we forgive it, and the crown which you owed: and if any other thing were taxed in Jerusalem, now let it not be taxed.	39 Vi condoniamo anche le dimenticanze, le offese, fino a questo giorno, e la corona che dovevate dare, e se vi fosse qualche altro tributo in Gerusalemme, non esista più come tributo.
40 And if any of you be fit to be enrolled among ours, let them be enrolled, and let there be peace between us.	40 E se vi è tra voi qualcuno capace di essere arruolato nelle nostre milizie, si arruoli, e regni tra di noi la pace ».
41 In the year one hundred and seventy the yoke of the Gentiles was taken off from Israel.	41 L'anno centosettanta, Israele scosse il giogo dei Greci,
42 And the people of Israel began to write in the instruments, and public records, The first year under Simon the high priest, the great captain and prince of the Jews.	42 e il popolo cominciò a scrivere sugli atti e i contratti: « Nell'anno primo, sotto Simone sommo sacerdote, gran duce e principe dei Giudei ».
43 In those days Simon besieged Gaza, and camped round about it, and he made engines, and set them to the city, and he struck one tower, and took it.	43 In quel tempo Simone andò contro Gaza, la circondò coll'esercito, alzò le macchine e le spinse contro la città, abbattè una torre e la prese.
44 And they that were within the engine leaped into the city: and there was a great uproar in the city.	44 Allora quelli che erano in una delle macchine entrarono con furia nella città, la quale fu in gran tumulto.
45 And they that were in the city went up with their wives and children upon the wall, with their garments rent, and they cried with a loud voice, beseeching Simon to grant them peace.	45 I cittadini salirono colle mogli e coi figlioli sullo mura, e, colle vesti stracciate, gridavano ad alta voce, scongiurando Simone a conceder loro la pace,
46 And they said: Deal not with us according to our evil deeds, but according to thy mercy.	46 e dicevano: « Non ci trattare secondo la nostra malvagità, ma secondo la tua clemenza».
47 And Simon being moved, did not destroy them: but yet he cast them out of the city, and cleansed the houses wherein there had been idols, and then he entered into it with hymns, blessing the Lord.	47 Simone si lasciò piegare, e non li trattò a rigor di guerra; ma però li cacciò dalla città, purificò le case dove erano stati gl'idoli, e poi v'entrò dentro cantando inni di lode al Signore.
48 And having cast out of it all uncleanness, he placed in it men that should observe the law: and he fortified it, and made it his habitation.	48 Toltene tutte le immondezze, la fece abitare da gente che osservasse la legge, la fortificò e vi si fece una casa.
49 But they that were in the castle of Jerusalem were hindered from going out and coming into the country, and from buying and selling: and they were straitened with hunger, and many of them perished through famine.	49 Intanto quelli che stavano nella cittadella di Gerusalemme, non potendo andare e venire nel paese, nè vendere, nè comprare, si ridussero alla fame, e molti di essi morirono di fame.
50 And they cried to Simon form peace, and he granted it to them: and he cast them out from thence, and cleansed the castle from uncleannesses.	50 Allora ad alte grida chiesero a Simone la pace, che egli concesse; ma li cacciò di là, e purificò la cittadella dalle immondezze.
51 And they entered into it the three and twentieth day of the second month, in the year one hundred and seventy-one, with thanksgiving, and branches of palm trees, and harps, and cymbals, and psalteries, and hymns, and canticles, because the great enemy was destroyed out of Israel.	51 I Giudei vi entrarono dentro ai ventitré del secondo mese, l'anno centosettant'uno, con rami di palme, cetre, cembali, arpe, e inni e cantici, perchè era stato tolto via un gran nemico da Israele.
52 And he ordained that these days should be kept every year with gladness.	52 Fu stabilito di festeggiare ogni anno questi giorni con gioia.
53 And he fortified the mountain of the temple that was near the castle, and he dwelt there himself, and they that were with him.	53 Simone fortificò il monte del tempio che era a lato della cittadella, e vi prese dimora coi suoi.
54 And Simon saw that John his son was a valiant man for war: and he made him captain of all the forces: and he dwelt in Gazara.	54 Avendo poi riconosciuto che Giovanni suo figliolo era uomo di grande valore, gli dette il comando di tutto l'esercito, con Gazara per residenza.
