DOUAI-RHEIMSNOVA VULGATA
Now Simon heard that Tryphon was gathering together a very great army, to invade the land of Juda, and to destroy it.1 Et audivit Simon quod con gregavit Tryphon exercitum copiosum, utveniret in terram Iudae et attereret eam.
And seeing that the people was in dread, and in fear, he went up to Jerusalem, and assembled the people:2 Videns quia in tremore populus estet in timore, ascendit Ierusalem et congregavit populum
And exhorted them, saying: You know what great battles I and my brethren, and the house of my father, have fought for the laws, and the sanctuary, and the distresses that we have seen:3 et exhortatus est eoset dixit illis: “ Vos scitis quanta ego et fratres mei et domus patris meifecimus pro legibus et pro sanctis proelia et angustias quales vidimus.
By reason whereof all my brethren have lost their lives for Israel's sake, and I am left alone.4 Horumgratia perierunt fratres mei omnes propter Israel, et relictus sum ego solus.
And now far be it from me to spare my life in any time of trouble: for I am not better than my brethren.5 Et nunc non mihi contingat parcere animae meae in omni tempore tribulationis;non enim melior sum fratribus meis.
I will avenge then my nation and the sanctuary, and our children, and wives: for all the heathens are gathered together to destroy us out of mere malice.6 Vindicabo tamen gentem meam et sancta,uxores quoque et natos vestros, quia congregatae sunt universae gentes contererenos inimicitiae gratia ”.
And the spirit of the people was enkindled as soon as they heard these words.7 Et accensus est spiritus populi, simul ut audivitsermones istos,
And they answered with a loud voice, saying: Thou art our leader in the place of Judas, and Jonathan thy brother.8 et responderunt voce magna dicentes: “ Tu es dux noster locoIudae et Ionathae fratris tui;
Fight thou our battles, and we will do whatsoever thou shalt say to us.9 pugna proelium nostrum, et omnia, quaecumquedixeris nobis, faciemus ”.
So gathering together all the men of war, he made haste to finish all the walls of Jerusalem, and he fortified it round about.10 Et congregans omnes viros bellatores acceleravitconsummare universos muros Ierusalem et munivit eam in gyro.
And he sent Jonathan the son of Absalom, and with him a new army into Joppe, and he cast out them that were in it, and himself remained there.11 Et misitIonathan filium Absalomi et cum eo exercitum magnum in Ioppen et, eiectis his,qui erant in ea, remansit illic in ea.
And Tryphon removed from Ptolemais with a great army, to invade the land of Juda, and Jonathan was with him in custody.12 Et movit Tryphon a Ptolemaida cum exercitu multo, ut veniret in terram Iudae,et Ionathas cum eo in custodia.
But Simon pitched in Addus, over against the plain.13 Simon autem applicuit in Adidis contra faciemcampi.
And when Tryphon understood that Simon was risen up in the place of his brother Jonathan, and that he meant to join battle with him, he sent messengers to him,14 Et ut cognovit Tryphon quia surrexit Simon loco fratris sui Ionathaeet quia commissurus esset cum eo proelium, misit ad eum legatos
Saying: We have detained thy brother Jonathan for the money that he owed in the king's account, by reason of the affairs which he had the management of.15 dicens: “Pro argento, quod debebat frater tuus Ionathas fisco regis propter negotia, quaehabuit, detinuimus eum;
But now send a hundred talents of silver, and his two sons for hostages, that when he is set at liberty he may not revolt from us, and we will release him.16 et nunc mitte argenti talenta centum et duos filioseius obsides, ut non dimissus fugiat a nobis, et remittemus eum ”.
Now Simon knew that he spoke deceitfully to him, nevertheless he ordered the money, and the children to be sent: lest he should bring upon himself a great hatred of the people of Israel, who might have said:17 Etcognovit Simon quia cum dolo loquuntur secum; misit tamen accipere argentum etpueros, ne inimicitiam magnam sumeret ad populum,
Because he sent not the money, and the children, therefore is he lost.18 qui dicerent: “ Quia nonmisit ei argentum et pueros, periit ”.
So he sent the children, and the hundred talents: and he lied, and did not let Jonathan go.19 Et misit pueros et centum talenta.Et mentitus est et non dimisit Ionathan;
And after this Tryphon entered within the country, to destroy it: and they went about by the way that leadeth to Ador: and Simon and his army marched to every place whithersoever they went.20 et post haec venit Tryphon intrarein regionem, ut contereret eam, et gyraverunt per viam, quae ducit Adoram. EtSimon et castra eius ambulabant in omnem locum, quocumque ibant.
And they that were in the castle, sent messengers to Tryphon, that he should make haste to come through the desert, and sent them victuals.21 Qui autem inarce erant, miserunt ad Tryphonem legatos urgentes eum, ut veniret ad eos perdesertum et mitteret illis alimonias.
And Tryphon made ready all his horsemen to come that night: but there fell a very great snow, and he came not into the country of Galaad.22 Et paravit Tryphon omnem equitatumsuum, ut veniret; et in illa nocte fuit nix multa valde, et non venit propternivem et discessit et abiit in Galaaditim.
And when he approached to Bascama, he slew Jonathan and his sons there.23 Et cum appropinquasset Bascaman, occidit Ionathan, et sepultus est illic;
And Tryphon returned, and went into his own country.24 et convertit Tryphon et abiit in terram suam.
And Simon sent, and took the bones of Jonathan his brother, and buried them in Modin, in the city of his fathers.25 Et misit Simon et accepit ossaIonathae fratris sui et sepelivit eum in Modin civitate patrum eius.
And all Israel bewailed him with great lamentation: and they mourned for him many days.26 Etplanxerunt eum omnis Israel planctu magno et luxerunt eum dies multos.
And Simon built over the sepulchre of his father and of his brethren, a building lofty to the sight, of polished stone behind and before:27 Etaedificavit Simon super sepulcrum patris sui et fratrum suorum et exaltavitillud visu, lapide polito retro et ante;
And he set up seven pyramids one against another for his father and his mother, and his four brethren:28 et statuit septem pyramidas, unamcontra unam, patri et matri et quattuor fratribus.
And round about these he set great pillars: and upon the pillars arms for a perpetual memory: and by the arms ships carved, which might be seen by all that sailed on the sea.29 Et his fecit machinamentacircumponens columnas magnas et super columnas arma ad memoriam aeternam etiuxta arma naves sculptas, quae viderentur ab omnibus navigantibus mare.
This is the sepulchre that he made in Modin even unto this day.30 Hocest sepulcrum, quod fecit in Modin, usque in hunc diem.
But Tryphon when he was upon a journey with the young king Antiochus, treacherously slew him.31 Tryphon autem iter faciebat dolo cum Antiocho rege adulescentiore et occiditeum
And he reigned in his place, and put on the crown of Asia: and brought great evils upon the land.32 et regnavit loco eius et imposuit sibi diadema Asiae et fecit plagammagnam in terra.
And Simon built up the strong holds of Judea, fortifying them with high towers, and great walls, and gates, and bars: and he stored up victuals in the fortresses.33 Et aedificavit Simon praesidia Iudaeae muniens ea turribusexcelsis et muris magnis et portis et seris; et posuit alimenta in munitionibus.
And Simon chose men and sent to king Demetrius, to the end that he should grant an immunity to the land: for all that Tryphon did was to spoil.34 Et elegit Simon viros et misit ad Demetrium regem, ut faceret remissionemregioni, quia actus omnes Tryphonis fuerant rapinae.
And king Demetrius in answer to this request, wrote a letter in this manner:35 Et Demetrius rex ad verba ista respondit ei et scripsit epistulam talem:
King Demetrius to Simon the high priest, and friend of kings, and to the ancients, and to the nation of the Jews, greeting.36 “ Rex Demetrius Simoni summo sacerdoti et amico regum et senioribus et gentiIudaeorum salutem.
The golden crown, and the palm, which you sent, we have received: and we are ready to make a firm peace with you, and to write to the king's chief officers to release you the things that we have released.37 Coronam auream et baen, quam misistis, suscepimus; etparati sumus facere vobiscum pacem magnam et scribere praepositis regisremittere vobis, quae indulsimus.
For all that we have decreed in your favour, shall stand in force. The strong holds that you have built, shall be your own.38 Quaecumque enim constituimus vobis,constant; munitiones, quas aedificastis, vobis sint.
And as for any oversight or fault committed unto this day, we forgive it, and the crown which you owed: and if any other thing were taxed in Jerusalem, now let it not be taxed.39 Remittimus quoqueignorantias et peccata usque in hodiernum diem et coronam, quam debebatis; et,si quid aliud erat tributarium in Ierusalem, iam non sit tributarium.
And if any of you be fit to be enrolled among ours, let them be enrolled, and let there be peace between us.40 Et, siqui ex vobis apti sunt conscribi inter nostros, conscribantur, et sit inter nospax ”.
In the year one hundred and seventy the yoke of the Gentiles was taken off from Israel.41 Anno centesimo septuagesimo ablatum est iugum gentium ab Israel.
And the people of Israel began to write in the instruments, and public records, The first year under Simon the high priest, the great captain and prince of the Jews.42 Et coepitpopulus Israel scribere in conscriptionibus et commutationibus: “ Anno primosub Simone summo sacerdote magno duce et principe Iudaeorum ”.
In those days Simon besieged Gaza, and camped round about it, and he made engines, and set them to the city, and he struck one tower, and took it.43 In diebus illis applicuit Simon ad Gazaram et circumdedit eam castris etfecit machinam et applicuit ad civitatem et percussit turrim unam etcomprehendit.
And they that were within the engine leaped into the city: and there was a great uproar in the city.44 Et eruperant, qui erant intra machinam, in civitatem; et factusest motus magnus in civitate.
And they that were in the city went up with their wives and children upon the wall, with their garments rent, and they cried with a loud voice, beseeching Simon to grant them peace.45 Et ascenderunt, qui erant in civitate, cumuxoribus et filiis supra murum, scissis tunicis suis, et clamaverunt voce magnapostulantes a Simone dextras sibi dari
And they said: Deal not with us according to our evil deeds, but according to thy mercy.46 et dixerunt: “ Non nobis reddassecundum malitias nostras sed secundum misericordiam tuam ”.
And Simon being moved, did not destroy them: but yet he cast them out of the city, and cleansed the houses wherein there had been idols, and then he entered into it with hymns, blessing the Lord.47 Et consensitillis Simon et non debellavit eos; eiecit tamen eos de civitate et mundavitaedes, in quibus fuerant simulacra, et tunc intravit in eam canens etbenedicens.
And having cast out of it all uncleanness, he placed in it men that should observe the law: and he fortified it, and made it his habitation.48 Et, eiecta ab ea omni immunditia, collocavit in ea viros, quilegem facerent, et munivit eam et aedificavit sibi habitationem.
But they that were in the castle of Jerusalem were hindered from going out and coming into the country, and from buying and selling: and they were straitened with hunger, and many of them perished through famine.49 Qui autem erant in arce Ierusalem, prohibebantur egredi et ingredi regionemet emere ac vendere; et esurierunt valde, et multi ex eis fame perierunt.
And they cried to Simon form peace, and he granted it to them: and he cast them out from thence, and cleansed the castle from uncleannesses.50 Etclamaverunt ad Simonem, ut dextras acciperent, et dedit illis et eiecit eos indeet mundavit arcem a contaminationibus.
And they entered into it the three and twentieth day of the second month, in the year one hundred and seventy-one, with thanksgiving, and branches of palm trees, and harps, and cymbals, and psalteries, and hymns, and canticles, because the great enemy was destroyed out of Israel.51 Et intraverunt in eam tertia etvicesima die secundi mensis, anno centesimo septuagesimo primo, cum laude etramis palmarum et cinyris et cymbalis et nablis et hymnis et canticis, quiacontritus est inimicus magnus ex Israel.
And he ordained that these days should be kept every year with gladness.52 Et constituit, ut omnibus annisagerentur dies hi cum laetitia.
And he fortified the mountain of the temple that was near the castle, and he dwelt there himself, and they that were with him.53 Et munivit montem templi, qui erat secusarcem, et habitavit ibi ipse et qui cum eo erant.
And Simon saw that John his son was a valiant man for war: and he made him captain of all the forces: and he dwelt in Gazara.54 Et vidit Simon Ioannemfilium suum quod vir esset et posuit eum ducem virtutum universarum; ethabitavit in Gazaris.
