And when Joseph saw this, he fell upon his father's face weeping and kissing him.1 José, vendo isto, lançou-se sobre o rosto do pai, chorando e beijando-o.
And he commanded his servants the physicians to embalm his father.2 Ordenou aos médicos que o serviam, que embalsamassem o seu pai.
And while they were fulfilling his commands, there passed forty days: for this was the manner with bodies that were embalmed, and Egypt mounted for him seventy days.3 Enquanto eles cumpriam a ordem, passaram-se quarenta dias, porque este é o tempo gasto para embalsamar (um cadáver). O Egito chorou-o durante setenta dias.
And the time of the mourning being expired, Joseph spoke to the family of Pharao: If I have found favour in your sight, speak in the ears of Pharao:4 Terminado o tempo do luto, disse José à família de Faraó; Se eu achei graça diante de vós, fazei chegar aos ouvidos de Faraó
For my father made me swear to him, saying: Behold I die: thou shalt bury me in my sepulchre which I have digged for myself in the land of Chanaan. So I will go up and bury my father, and return.5 que meu pai me obrigou a jurar, quando disse: Vou morrer, sepultas-me-ás no meu sepulcro, que mandei abrir para mim na terra de Canaan. Irei, pois, sepultar meu pai, e depois voltarei.
And Pharao said to him: Go up and bury thy father according as he made thee swear.6 Faraó respondeu: Vai e sepulta teu pai, como prometeste com juramento.
So he went up, and there went with him all the ancients of Pharao's house, and all the elders of the land of Egypt,7 Partindo ele, acompanharam-no todos os anciães da casa de Faraó, e todos os principais da terra do Egito,
And the house of Joseph with his brethren, except their children, and their flocks and herds, which they left in the land of Gessen.8 a casa de José com seus irmãos, e a casa de seu pai, à excepção dos pequeninos, dos rebanhos, e dos armamentos, os quais deixaram na terra de Gessen.
He had also in his train chariots and horsemen: and it was it great company.9 Teve também (José) o acompanhamento de carros e cavaleiros, de forma que o cortejo era enorme.
And they came to the threshingfloor of Atad, which is situated beyond the Jordan: where celebrating the exequies with a great and vehement lamentation, they spent full seven days.10 Chegaram à eira de Atad, que está situada além do Jordão, onde gastaram sete dias a celebrar as exéquias com um pranto grande e profundo.
And when the inhabitants of Chanaan saw this, they said: This is a great mourning to the Egyptians. And therefore the name of that place was called, The mourning of Egypt.11 Tendo observado isto os habitantes da terra de Canaan, disseram: Grande pranto é este dos egípcios. Por isto, se ficou chamando aquele lugar o Pranto do Egito.
So the sons of Jacob did as he had commanded them.12 Fizeram, pois, os filhos de Jacob como ele lhes tinha mandado:
And carrying him into the land of Chanaan, they buried him in the double cave which Abraham had bought together with the held for a possession of a buryingplace, of Ephron the Hethite over against Mambre.13 levando-o à terra de Canaan, o sepultaram na caverna, em frente de Mambré, que Abraão tinha comprado a Efron, o Heteu, com o campo (em que ela está), para ter um sepulcro.
And Joseph returned into Egypt with his brethren, and all that were in his company, after he had buried his father.14 José, sepultado seu pai, voltou para o Egito com seus irmãos e toda a comitiva.
Now he being dead, his brethren were afraid, and talked one with another : Lest perhaps he should remember the wrong he suffered, and requite us all the evil that we did to him.15 Depois da morte de Jacob, os irmãos (de José) ficaram temerosos, dizendo entre si: Quem sabe se José nos ganhará ódio lembrado da injúria que padeceu, e nos fará pagar todo o mal que lhe fizemos?
And they sent a message to him, saying: Thy father commanded us before he died,16 Mandaram-lhe, pois, dizer: Teu pai antes de morrer ordenou-nos
That we should say thus much to thee from him: I beseech thee to forget the wickedness of thy brethren, and the sin and malice they practiced against thee: we also pray thee, to forgive the servants of the God of thy father this wickedness. And when Joseph heard this, he wept.17 que em seu nome te disséssemos: Peço-te que esqueças o crime de teus irmãos, o pecado e a maldade que usaram contra ti; nós te suplicamos também que perdoes esta iniquidade aos servos do Deus de teu pai. Ouvindo isto, José chorou.
And his brethren came to him: and worshipping prostrate on the ground they said: We are thy servants.18 Seus irmãos foram ter com ele, e, prostrados por terra, disseram: Nós somos teus servos.
And he answered them: Fear not: can we resist the will of God?19 Ele respondeu-lhes: Não temais: porventura podemos nós resistir à vontade de Deus?
You thought evil against me: but God turned it into good, that he might exalt me, as at present you see, and might save many people.20 Vós tivestes intenção de me fazer mal, mas Deus o converteu em bem, para me exaltar, como presentemente vedes, e para salvar muitos povos.
Fear not: I will feed you and your children. And he comforted them, and spoke gently and mildly.21 Não temais: eu vos sustentarei a vós e a vossos filhinhos. Assim os consolou, falando-lhes com doçura e mansidão.
And he dwelt in Egypt with all his father's house: and lived a hundred and ten years. And he saw the children of Ephraim to the third generation. The children also of Machir the son of Ma-nasses were born on Joseph's knees.22 (José) habitou no Egito, com toda a família de seu pai. Viveu cento e dez anos, e viu os filhos de Efraim até à terceira geração. Os filhos de Maquir, filho de Manassés, nasceram também sobre os joelhos de José.
After which he told his brethren: God will visit you after my death, and will make you go up out of this land, to the land which he swore to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.23 Passado isto, disse a seus irmãos: Deus vos visitará, depois da minha morte, e vos fará sair desta terra para a terra prometida com juramento a Abraão, a Isaac e a Jacob.
And he made them swear to him, saying: God will visit you, Carry my bones with you out of this place:24 José obrigou os filhos de Israel a jurar, dizendo: Deus vos visitará, levai os meus ossos convosco deste lugar.
And he died being a hundred and ten years old. And being embalmed he was laid in a coffin in Egypt.25 Morreu, tendo completado os cento e dez anos da sua vida, e foi embalsamado e depositado num caixão no Egito.
