1 ¡Feliz el hombre que no ha faltado con su lengua ni es atormentado por el remordimiento!	1 Happy the man whose mouth brings him no grief, who is not stung by remorse for sin.
2 ¡Feliz el que no tiene que reprocharse a sí mismo y no ve desvanecerse su esperanza!	2 Happy the man whose conscience does not reproach him, who has not lost hope.
3 ¿De qué le sirve la riqueza al mezquino y para qué tiene el avaro su fortuna.	3 Wealth ill becomes the mean man; and to the miser, of what use is gold?
4 El que acumula, privándose de todo, acumula para otros, y otros se darán buena vida con sus bienes.	4 What he denies himself he collects for others, and in his possessions a stranger will revel.
5 El que es malo consigo mismo ¿con quién será bueno? Ni él mismo disfruta de su fortuna.	5 To whom will he be generous who is stingy with himself and does not enjoy what is his own?
6 No hay nadie peor que el avaro consigo mismo, y ese es el justo pago de su maldad.	6 None is more stingy than he who is stingy with himself; he punishes his own miserliness.
7 Si hace algún bien, lo hace por descuido, y termina por revelar su malicia.	7 If ever he is generous, it is by mistake; and in the end he displays his greed.
8 Es un malvado el que mira con envidia, el que da vuelta la cara y menosprecia a los demás.	8 In the miser's opinion his share is too small;
9 El ojo del ambicioso no está satisfecho con su parte y la ruindad reseca el alma.	9 he refuses his neighbor and brings ruin on himself.
10 El miserable mezquina el pan y tiene su mesa siempre vacía.	10 The miser's eye is rapacious for bread, but on his own table he sets it stale.
11 En la medida de tus recursos, vive bien, hijo mío, y presenta al Señor ofrendas dignas.	11 My son, use freely whatever you have and enjoy it as best you can;
12 Recuerda que la muerte no tardará y que el pacto del Abismo no te ha sido revelado.	12 Remember that death does not tarry, nor have you been told the grave's appointed time.
13 Antes de morir, haz el bien a tu amigo y dale con largueza, en la medida de tus fuerzas.	13 Before you die, be good to your friend, and give him a share in what you possess.
14 No te prives de un día agradable ni desaproveches tu parte de gozo legítimo.	14 Deprive not yourself of present good things, let no choice portion escape you.
15 ¿Acaso no dejarás a otro el fruto de tus trabajos, y el de tus fatigas, para que lo repartan en herencia?	15 Will you not leave your riches to others, and your earnings to be divided by lot?
16 Da y recibe, olvida tus preocupaciones, porque no hay que buscar delicias en el Abismo.	16 Give, take, and treat yourself well, for in the nether world there are no joys to seek.
17 Todo ser viviente envejece como un vestido, porque está en pie la antigua sentencia: «Tienes que morir».	17 All flesh grows old, like a garment; the age-old law is: All must die.
18 En el follaje de un árbol tupido, unas hojas caen y otras brotan: así son las generaciones de carne y de sangre, una muere y otra nace.	18 As with the leaves that grow on a vigorous tree: one falls off and another sprouts-- So with the generations of flesh and blood: one dies and another is born.
19 Toda obra corruptible desaparece y el que la hizo se irá con ella.	19 All man's works will perish in decay, and his handiwork will follow after him.
20 ¡Feliz el hombre que se ocupa de la sabiduría y el que razona con inteligencia,	20 Happy the man who meditates on wisdom, and reflects on knowledge;
21 el que reflexiona sobre los caminos de la sabiduría y penetra en sus secretos!	21 Who ponders her ways in his heart, and understands her paths;
22 El la sigue como un rastreador y se queda al acecho de sus pasos;	22 Who pursues her like a scout, and lies in wait at her entry way;
23 espía por sus ventanas y escucha atentamente a sus puertas;	23 Who peeps through her windows, and listens at her doors;
24 busca albergue cerca de su casa y clava una estaca en sus muros;	24 Who encamps near her house, and fastens his tent pegs next to her walls;
25 instala su carpa cerca de ella y se alberga en la mejor de las moradas;	25 Who pitches his tent beside her, and lives as her welcome neighbor;
26 pone a sus hijos bajo el abrigo de ella y vive a la sombre de sus ramas:	26 Who builds his nest in her leafage, and lodges in her branches;
27 ella lo protege del calor y él habita en su gloria.	27 Who takes shelter with her from the heat, and dwells in her home.
