| 1 Alors Anne prononça ce cantique: “En Yahvé mon cœur chante de joie, avec Yahvé je suis pleine de force; je peux répondre à mes ennemis, car tu m’as sauvée, c’est là mon bonheur. | 1 Hannah also prayed and said, "My heart exults in the LORD; my strength is exalted in the LORD. My mouth derides my enemies, because I rejoice in thy salvation. |
| 2 Nul n’est Saint comme Yahvé, personne ne l’est sinon toi: il n’y a pas d’autre rocher que notre Dieu. | 2 "There is none holy like the LORD, there is none besides thee; there is no rock like our God. |
| 3 Laissez là votre orgueil, vos paroles inutiles, que l’arrogance ne sorte plus de votre bouche. Yahvé est un Dieu qui connaît toute chose, c’est lui qui pèsera vos actes. | 3 Talk no more so very proudly, let not arrogance come from your mouth; for the LORD is a God of knowledge, and by him actions are weighed. |
| 4 L’arc des guerriers se brise, mais les faibles sont remplis de force. | 4 The bows of the mighty are broken, but the feeble gird on strength. |
| 5 Ceux qui n’ont pas eu faim s’embauchent pour du pain; pour ceux qui avaient faim, fini de travailler; celle qui était stérile met au monde sept enfants; une autre avait des fils: seule, elle s’éteint. | 5 Those who were full have hired themselves out for bread, but those who were hungry have ceased to hunger. The barren has borne seven, but she who has many children is forlorn. |
| 6 Yahvé donne la mort et donne la vie, il fait descendre au séjour des morts, il fait qu’on en remonte. | 6 The LORD kills and brings to life; he brings down to Sheol and raises up. |
| 7 C’est Yahvé qui rend pauvre, c’est lui qui enrichit, Il abaisse, mais ensuite il relève. | 7 The LORD makes poor and makes rich; he brings low, he also exalts. |
| 8 Il retire de la poussière le petit, de son fumier il relève le pauvre pour le faire asseoir avec les grands, et lui donner un trône de gloire. La terre et ses colonnes appartiennent à Yahvé, sur elles il a établi le monde. | 8 He raises up the poor from the dust; he lifts the needy from the ash heap, to make them sit with princes and inherit a seat of honor. For the pillars of the earth are the LORDS, and on them he has set the world. |
| 9 Il veille sur les pas de ses fidèles, mais les méchants périssent dans les ténèbres: nulle violence ne donne à l’homme la victoire. | 9 "He will guard the feet of his faithful ones; but the wicked shall be cut off in darkness; for not by might shall a man prevail. |
| 10 Tes ennemis, Yahvé, sont mis en déroute, quand dans les cieux tu tonnes, ô Très-Haut! Yahvé fait justice jusqu’aux confins du monde, il donne la force à son roi et rend invincible son Messie.” | 10 The adversaries of the LORD shall be broken to pieces; against them he will thunder in heaven. The LORD will judge the ends of the earth; he will give strength to his king, and exalt the power of his anointed." |
| 11 Elkana revint donc chez lui à Rama, tandis que l’enfant restait au service de Yahvé, sous la garde du prêtre Héli. | 11 Then Elkanah went home to Ramah. And the boy ministered to the LORD, in the presence of Eli the priest. |
| 12 Les fils d’Héli étaient des moins que rien, ils ne respectaient ni Yahvé, | 12 Now the sons of Eli were worthless men; they had no regard for the LORD. |
| 13 ni la loi des prêtres vis-à-vis du peuple. Lorsque quelqu’un offrait un sacrifice, le serviteur du prêtre venait pendant qu’on cuisait la viande. Avec une fourchette à trois dents, | 13 The custom of the priests with the people was that when any man offered sacrifice, the priest's servant would come, while the meat was boiling, with a three-pronged fork in his hand, |
| 14 il piquait dans le chaudron, ou dans la marmite, ou dans la terrine, ou dans le pot, et tout ce que ramenait la fourchette était pour le prêtre. On faisait ainsi à l’égard de tous les Israélites qui venaient à Silo. | 14 and he would thrust it into the pan, or kettle, or caldron, or pot; all that the fork brought up the priest would take for himself. So they did at Shiloh to all the Israelites who came there. |
| 15 Avant même que l’on fasse fumer la graisse, le serviteur du prêtre arrivait; il disait à celui qui offrait le sacrifice: “Donne de la viande à rôtir pour le prêtre, il n’acceptera pas de la viande bouillie, seulement de la viande à rôtir.” | 15 Moreover, before the fat was burned, the priest's servant would come and say to the man who was sacrificing, "Give meat for the priest to roast; for he will not accept boiled meat from you, but raw." |
| 16 Et si cet homme répondait: “Qu’on fasse d’abord fumer la graisse, ensuite tu prendras ce que tu veux”, il répliquait: “Non, tu vas me le donner tout de suite, sinon je le prends de force!” | 16 And if the man said to him, "Let them burn the fat first, and then take as much as you wish," he would say, "No, you must give it now; and if not, I will take it by force." |
| 17 La faute de ces jeunes gens était très grande devant Yahvé, car ils jetaient le discrédit sur l’offrande qu’on fait à Yahvé. | 17 Thus the sin of the young men was very great in the sight of the LORD; for the men treated the offering of the LORD with contempt. |
| 18 Samuel était encore un enfant, il était au service de Yahvé et portait un pagne de lin. | 18 Samuel was ministering before the LORD, a boy girded with a linen ephod. |
| 19 Chaque année sa mère lui faisait une petite tunique qu’elle lui apportait lorsqu’elle montait avec son mari pour le sacrifice annuel. | 19 And his mother used to make for him a little robe and take it to him each year, when she went up with her husband to offer the yearly sacrifice. |
| 20 C’est alors qu’Héli bénit Elkana et sa femme: “Que Yahvé, dit-il, te donne des enfants de cette femme en échange du fils qu’elle a consacré à Yahvé.” Après quoi ils s’en retournèrent chez eux. | 20 Then Eli would bless Elkanah and his wife, and say, "The LORD give you children by this woman for the loan which she lent to the LORD"; so then they would return to their home. |
| 21 Yahvé se souvint d’Anne: elle conçut et enfanta trois fils et deux filles. Quant au jeune Samuel, il grandissait sous le regard de Yahvé. | 21 And the LORD visited Hannah, and she conceived and bore three sons and two daughters. And the boy Samuel grew in the presence of the LORD. |
| 22 Héli était très vieux. Il apprit la mauvaise conduite de ses fils à l’égard de tout Israël: ils couchaient en effet avec les femmes qui faisaient le service à l’entrée de la Tente du Rendez-Vous. | 22 Now Eli was very old, and he heard all that his sons were doing to all Israel, and how they lay with the women who served at the entrance to the tent of meeting. |
| 23 Il leur dit: “Pourquoi vous conduisez-vous comme cela? Tout le monde me parle de vos mauvaises actions. | 23 And he said to them, "Why do you do such things? For I hear of your evil dealings from all the people. |
| 24 Non, mes enfants! Ce que j’entends n’a rien de beau: vous péchez contre Yahvé. | 24 No, my sons; it is no good report that I hear the people of the LORD spreading abroad. |
| 25 Si un homme pèche contre un autre homme, Dieu peut faire l’arbitre, mais celui qui pèche contre Yahvé, qui intercédera pour lui?” Cependant ils n’écoutèrent pas la voix de leur père: Yahvé avait déjà décidé de les faire périr. | 25 If a man sins against a man, God will mediate for him; but if a man sins against the LORD, who can intercede for him?" But they would not listen to the voice of their father; for it was the will of the LORD to slay them. |
| 26 Quant au jeune Samuel, de jour en jour il grandissait et devenait meilleur, aux yeux de Yahvé comme aux yeux des hommes. | 26 Now the boy Samuel continued to grow both in stature and in favor with the LORD and with men. |
| 27 Un homme de Dieu vint trouver Héli et lui dit: “Écoute cette parole de Yahvé: Je me suis révélé clairement à la maison de ton père lorsqu’ils étaient en Égypte chez le Pharaon. | 27 And there came a man of God to Eli, and said to him, "Thus the LORD has said, I revealed myself to the house of your father when they were in Egypt subject to the house of Pharaoh. |
| 28 Je l’ai choisi entre toutes les tribus d’Israël pour qu’il soit mon prêtre, pour monter à mon autel, pour faire fumer l’encens et porter l’éphod devant moi. J’ai donné à la maison de ton père toutes les offrandes que les Israélites sacrifient par le feu. | 28 And I chose him out of all the tribes of Israel to be my priest, to go up to my altar, to burn incense, to wear an ephod before me; and I gave to the house of your father all my offerings by fire from the people of Israel. |
| 29 Pourquoi maintenant jetez-vous le discrédit sur les sacrifices et les offrandes que j’ai ordonnés dans ma maison? Tu as plus d’égards pour tes fils que pour moi et tu les laisses s’engraisser avec tout le meilleur des offrandes que présente mon peuple Israël. | 29 Why then look with greedy eye at my sacrifices and my offerings which I commanded, and honor your sons above me by fattening yourselves upon the choicest parts of every offering of my people Israel?' |
| 30 “C’est pourquoi voici ce que dit Yahvé, le Dieu d’Israël: J’avais déclaré que ta maison, celle de ton père, resterait pour toujours à mon service. Mais maintenant, dit Yahvé, c’est fini! Car j’honore ceux qui m’honorent mais ceux qui me méprisent seront méprisés. | 30 Therefore the LORD the God of Israel declares: I promised that your house and the house of your father should go in and out before me for ever'; but now the LORD declares: Far be it from me; for those who honor me I will honor, and those who despise me shall be lightly esteemed. |
| 31 Voici venir des jours où je te briserai les bras à toi et à la maison de ton père, et on ne verra plus de vieillards dans ta maison. | 31 Behold, the days are coming, when I will cut off your strength and the strength of your father's house, so that there will not be an old man in your house. |
| 32 Tu verras tout le bien que je ferai à Israël, pendant que ta demeure sera plongée dans l’angoisse: plus jamais on n’y verra des gens âgés. | 32 Then in distress you will look with envious eye on all the prosperity which shall be bestowed upon Israel; and there shall not be an old man in your house for ever. |
| 33 Je laisserai toujours près de mon autel l’un de tes descendants pour que ses yeux le voient, et qu’il en soit humilié, mais tout l’ensemble de ceux qui seront nés dans ta maison, périront par l’épée des hommes. | 33 The man of you whom I shall not cut off from my altar shall be spared to weep out his eyes and grieve his heart; and all the increase of your house shall die by the sword of men. |
| 34 “Toi même tu vas avoir un signe de ce qui arrivera par la suite: tes fils Hofni et Pinhas mourront tous les deux le même jour. | 34 And this which shall befall your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, shall be the sign to you: both of them shall die on the same day. |
| 35 “Alors se lèvera un prêtre fidèle qui agira selon mon cœur et selon mon âme; je lui ferai une maison inébranlable et il remplira toujours sa charge sous le regard de celui que j’ai choisi. | 35 And I will raise up for myself a faithful priest, who shall do according to what is in my heart and in my mind; and I will build him a sure house, and he shall go in and out before my anointed for ever. |
| 36 Ceux qui resteront de ta maison viendront se prosterner devant lui pour une pièce d’argent ou un morceau de pain, et ils diront: Confie-moi, je t’en prie, une petite charge dans le sacerdoce, pour que j’aie un morceau de pain à manger.” | 36 And every one who is left in your house shall come to implore him for a piece of silver or a loaf of bread, and shall say, Put me, I pray you, in one of the priest's places, that I may eat a morsel of bread.'" |
